What's the best platform to publish documentation to internal users?

My team has a need to publish documentation internally. At the moment, it's spread all over the place and this means we often have to search everywhere to find something. We'd like to publish everything in one place. The main thing that stops us is access control - the wikis in place don't belong to us and we can't do it. What is the best tool for publishing docs, ideally fitting these requirements: web front end - readers access docs using browser single place to put docs access control by individual doc or by sets of docs (folders, branch of 'site', ...) if you don't have access to a doc, you don't see the link to that page/doc/folder. either built-in editor or something my users are familiar with (e.g. Word) built-in version control would be nice Also, can you think of other criteria I should've specified?

Reset local Certificate Revocation List (CRL) manual

How can I reset local CRL (in OS local cash) in Windows OS (XP, Windows 7) manual? We need to reset local CRL because otherwise the OS will use local CRL until "next update" period. As described in "Manually publish the CRL": Clients that have a cached copy of the previously-published CRL or delta CRL will continue using it until its validity period has expired, even though a new CRL has been published. Manually publishing a CRL does not affect cached copies of CRLs that are still valid; it only makes a new CRL available for systems that do not have a valid CRL.

Baffling Exchange 2010 issue , Outlook 2003

Recently we upgraded from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010. The Exchange 2003 server is still up and active with a handful of users still there we are planning on migrating. Also we have mobile devices and a Blackberry BES server setup publishing to Exchange 2010 public folders free busy. The unfortunate issue is majority of our clients are still Outlook 2003. The issue seems to be hit and miss but sometime clients cannot view other client’s calendars. They get (cannot refresh free/busy) when they add another user and check their available times. This is also true with booking resources (conference rooms) . One thing we noticed is that the Blackberry BES seems to have created its own free/busy folders, so we have some users who use the BES on free/busy folder and other users who don’t use the BES on other free/busy folders. If any of the clients log-in via “Exchange 2010” web-access or with a Outlook 2007 client they can view the calendaring just fine. Thanks for your help Nick @Toshana

OSS Router firmwares

DD-WRT, Open WRT , Tomato or Third-party firmware projects ? What are the compelling reasons to choose between these? I used to be a great DD-WRT fan until I realized that the author was deceiving users by publishing it as a OSS, but made it very cumbersome to download the source and change it (requires you to download GB’s of source files) .Also their bandwidth monitoring feature was part of the paid version, which IMHO is a killer. Having said that, DD-WRT just worked. And I think that’s great..

Is it possible to use WebMatrix with pure IIS?

I'd like to check out WebMatrix for publishing our site to IIS automatically (right now, I have to zip it up, copy it out, Remote Desktop into the server, unzip it, etc). However, every example I can find on how to setup WebMatrix involves Azure, or using a .publishsettings file that you'd get from your hosting provider. I'm curious if I can publish to a normal, every day IIS server running on Windows Server 2008. So far, all I've done to the IIS server is install Web Deploy, which I believe is the protocol that WebMatrix uses to publish. When I enter the Remote Site Settings screen, I select Enter settings. I select Web Deploy as the protocol, type in my NT domain credentials (I'm an Admin on that server). I put in the site URL for the Site Name and Destination URL. When I click Validate Connection, I get: Am I doing something wrong, or is this just not possible to do?

IIS7 unchecked in windows component list yet when go to http://localhost still directs me to IIS7. How to get to Apache?

IIS7 was turned off on my Windows 7 system, Under control panel services and applications no web publishing appears. Have Apache, et. al. installed with Wampserver. Yet when I try to access the local server astill get directed to IIS7 welcome page. After turning off IIS7 restarted computer, no help, eliminated history, no help, deleted IIS7 folders, no help. It is hiding somewhere and I can not find it. Any suggestions/help would be appreciated. Ed

Do I need to disable access to a publisher database when setting up SQL Server 2000 Transactional Re

I have a production database i.e. where there are constant updates and I've configured this to be published to another server using Transactional Replication. When I configure transactional replication I've been doing the following: disable access to the source database backup source DB then restore to subscription server configure replication re-enable DB access to our apps The problem with this approach is scheduling in downtime, having to suspend all the various timed scheduled tasks we run and shutting down access to our various applications that are dependant on this database. Can I just configure transactional replication without disabling access to the publishing database and the subscriber database will correctly catch up? i.e. are all the DML statements queued on the publisher and as soon as the subscriber is ready they are picked off and executed?

I am in charge of teaching him how to do this, but only have Linux (albeit with Wine installed) at my disposal for testing. Could you guys recommend a fast, easy, batch-capable, and hopefully open-source program that will resize pictures to the resolution he wants? Bigger ProjectServer farm is performing worse

I am using Project Server 2007 sp3 with SharePoint 2007 sp3 and SQL Server 2008 r2. I have recently moved my farm from 2 servers (1 DB and 1 App/Web) to a very big farm having Many Servers, Clustered Database, Load Balancer, Powerful processors and Large RAM. This Farm has more than one Web Servers, Project App Servers, SharePoint App Servers and a separate Index Server. But the performance of Project Server in the new Farm has been downgraded. Views are taking even more time to load data and Project publishing time has also been increased. I am also facing deadlock problems which are causing the project server queue jobs to fail. Could anyone inform me that what would be the reason of this problem and what should be the starting point to look into the issue? Is it mainly because now the application server needs to communicate with other application servers which were not needed in the previous farm? Thanks!

Using mongodump with an auth enabled mongodb server

I'm trying to do a daily backup of my mongodb server (auth enabled) using the mongodump tool. mongodump provides two parameters to set the credentials: -u [ --username ] arg username -p [ --password ] arg password Unfortunately they don't provide any parameter to read the password from stdin. Therefore everytime I run this command, everyone on the server can read the password (e.g. by using ps aux). The only workaround I have found is stopping the database and directly accessing the database files using the --dbpath parameter. Is there any other solution which allows me to backup the mongodb database without stopping the server and without "publishing" my password? I am using Debian squeeze 6.0.5 amd64 with mongodb 1.4.4-3.

Word document can not open on user's system

I try to open a word document in my web application. It opens fine on localhost, but now I am publishing my web application on a server. Users that access the published web application (like http://10.0.23.57/StandardOperatingProcedure/Default.aspx) can not open the word document on their system. winword.exe opens on the server but can not open the word document. Access my system to author systems also same problem is coming. (Word document does not open on user's system. The word instance opens on my system.)

Create PDF with internal hyperlinks

I have an Excel workbook with an index page containing a series of images, that are each hyperlinked to different worksheets. Can anybody suggest how I can publish this to PDF so that the hyperlinks work in the PDF? When I publish or use PDF Factory, the hyperlinks are not preserved (and bookmarks aren't created for that matter either). I would prefer to do this with inbuilt functionality or free tools, though any suggestions welcome. Also, it doesn't necessarily have to be with Excel. Publishing from powerpoint would be almost as good, and failing that, any easy solution which allows me to create a PDF containing clickable images that takes one to internal bookmarks might also be a workaround.

I need to know how to set up a local webDav server on my PC so that goodreader on ipad can automatically sync with it over the local wifi network? I am really a rookie when it comes to setting up a web server and have tried various guides on the internet. I tried setting up a webdav server using IIS and forwarded the required ports and enabled webdav publishing but goodreader can find it in the local wifi network automatically nor is it able to connect even after manually entering the credendtials. So i'll be really greateful if someone who has successfully setup a webdav server for use with goodreader can point me on how to do it?

Should I never put a transactional replication distributor on a subscriber server?

What factors into choosing a distribution server for transactional replication? In our topology, we've always had the distributor reside on the publishing server. We rarely generate snapshots and performance is good enough, so this is okay for us today. One of our instances is moving to a cluster, so we need to move the distributor off for resilience/symmetry. Right now our two choices are to use a server physically close to the publishers, or our single subscription server. Our publisher is in our main office, and our subscriber is in a colocation facility off-site which our ISP runs. We have a pretty good line to it. The reason we're even considering the latter is to save work and licensing costs.

Two way replication

I have a little problem... I have this case: -2 server instances -2 Databases -1 Table (5 columns) From server 1 I created publication to replicate all columns of table I have in 1. DB From server 2 I created subscription to pull all columns from table which is in server 1 DB But now, I need to publicate one columns of same table from server 2 to server 1 and also it has to be in same DB... I tried with using logic and creating publication for server 2 and subscription on server 1 but there is error appearing "You have selected the Publisher as a Subscriber and entered a subscription database that is the same as the publishing database. Select another subscription database." I hope someone understood my problem and have an answer for me, thanks in advance... p.s. Ask for more info if you need ...

Creating a multi-tenant application using PostgreSQL's schemas and Rails

Stuff I've already figured out I'm learning how to create a multi-tenant application in Rails that serves data from different schemas based on what domain or subdomain is used to view the application. I already have a few concerns answered: How can you get subdomain-fu to work with domains as well? Here's someone that asked the same question which leads you to this blog. What database, and how will it be structured? Here's an excellent talk by Guy Naor, and good question about PostgreSQL and schemas. I already know my schemas will all have the same structure. They will differ in the data they hold. So, how can you run migrations for all schemas? Here's an answer. Those three points cover a lot of the general stuff I need to know. However, in the next steps I seem to have many ways of implementing things. I'm hoping that there's a better, easier way. Finally, to my question When a new user signs up, I can easily create the schema. However, what would be the best and easiest way to load the structure that the rest of the schemas already have? Here are some questions/scenarios that might give you a better idea. Should I pass it on to a shell script that dumps the public schema into a temporary one, and imports it back to my main database (pretty much like what Guy Naor says in his video)? Here's a quick summary/script I got from the helpful #postgres on freenode. While this will probably work, I'm gonna have to do a lot of stuff outside of Rails, which makes me a bit uncomfortable.. which also brings me to the next question. Is there a way to do this straight from Ruby on Rails? Like create a PostgreSQL schema, then just load the Rails database schema (schema.rb - I know, it's confusing) into that PostgreSQL schema. Is there a gem/plugin that has these things already? Methods like "create_pg_schema_and_load_rails_schema(the_new_schema_name)". If there's none, I'll probably work at making one, but I'm doubtful about how well tested it'll be with all the moving parts (especially if I end up using a shell script to create and manage new PostgreSQL schemas). Paying great programmers more than average programmers

It's fairly well recognized that some programmers are up to 10 times more productive than others. Joel mentions this topic on his blog. There is a whole blog devoted to the idea of the "10x productive programmer". In years since the original study, the general finding that "There are order-of-magnitude differences among programmers" has been confirmed by many other studies of professional programmers (Curtis 1981, Mills 1983, DeMarco and Lister 1985, Curtis et al. 1986, Card 1987, Boehm and Papaccio 1988, Valett and McGarry 1989, Boehm et al 2000). Fred Brooks mentions the wide range in the quality of designers in his "No Silver Bullet" article, The differences are not minor--they are rather like the differences between Salieri and Mozart. Study after study shows that the very best designers produce structures that are faster, smaller, simpler, cleaner, and produced with less effort. The differences between the great and the average approach an order of magnitude. The study that Brooks cites is: H. Sackman, W.J. Erikson, and E.E. Grant, "Exploratory Experimental Studies Comparing Online and Offline Programming Performance," Communications of the ACM, Vol. 11, No. 1 (January 1968), pp. 3-11. The way programmers are paid by employers these days makes it almost impossible to pay the great programmers a large multiple of what the entry-level salary is. When the starting salary for a just-graduated entry-level programmer, we'll call him Asok (From Dilbert), is $40K, even if the top programmer, we'll call him Linus, makes $120K that is only a multiple of 3. I'd be willing to be that Linus does much more than 3 times what Asok does, so why wouldn't we expect him to get paid more as well? Here is a quote from Stroustrup: "The companies are complaining because they are hurting. They can't produce quality products as cheaply, as reliably, and as quickly as they would like. They correctly see a shortage of good developers as a part of the problem. What they generally don't see is that inserting a good developer into a culture designed to constrain semi-skilled programmers from doing harm is pointless because the rules/culture will constrain the new developer from doing anything significantly new and better." This leads to two questions. I'm excluding self-employed programmers and contractors. If you disagree that's fine but please include your rationale. It might be that the self-employed or contract programmers are where you find the top-10 earners, but please provide a explanation/story/rationale along with any anecdotes. [EDIT] I thought up some other areas in which talent/ability affects pay. Financial traders (commodities, stock, derivatives, etc.) designers (fashion, interior decorators, architects, etc.) professionals (doctor, lawyer, accountant, etc.) sales Questions: Why aren't the top 1% of programmers paid like A-list movie stars? What would the industry be like if we did pay the "Smart and gets things done" programmers 6, 8, or 10 times what an intern makes? [Footnote: I posted this question after submitting it to the Stackoverflow podcast. It was included in episode 77 and I've written more about it as a Codewright's Tale post 'Of Rockstars and Bricklayers'] Epilogue: It's probably unfair to exclude contractors and the self-employed. One aspect of the highest earners in other fields is that they are free-agents. The competition for their skills is what drives up their earning power. This means they can not be interchangeable or otherwise treated as a plug-and-play resource. I liked the example in one answer of a major league baseball team trying to field two first-basemen. Also, something that Joel mentioned in the Stackoverflow podcast (#77). There are natural dynamics to shrink any extreme performance/pay ranges between the highs and lows. One is the peer pressure of organizations to pay within a given range, another is the likelyhood that the high performer will realize their undercompensation and seek greener pastures.

403 error after adding javascript to masterpage for sharepoint.

I am attempting to add highslide-with-html.js from http://highslide.com/ to my masterpage. I am receiving a 403 forbidden error when I use the provided masterpage. I have placed it in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS\1033. Test javascript files such as pirate.js which consists solely of alert("Arr!"); have loaded from the same directory. I have provided the code for the masterpage. How do I sign my certificate using the root certificate

I am using certificate based authentication between my server and client. I have generated Root Certificate. My client at the time of installation will generate a new Certificate and use the Root Certificate to sign it. I need to use Windows API. Cannot use any windows tools like makecert. Till now I have been able to Install the Root certificate in store. I have added the mp3's to the resources folder and they have been copied and not just linked. They are not in an subfolder under the resources folder. Secondly, how can I set it up so that when say button C3 is pressed, it plays C3.mp3 and F3 plays F3.mp3 without writing duplicate lines of code for each different button? playNote should be like NSString *path = [[NSBundle mainBundle] pathForResource:nameOfButton ofType:@"mp3"]; instead of defining it specifically (@"C3"). Is there a better way of doing this and why does the *path report NULL and crash when I load the app? I'm pretty sure it's something as simple as adding additional variable inputs to - (IBAction) playNote:buttonName and putting all the code to call AVAudioPlayer in the playNote function but I'm unsure of the code to do this.

How optimize code with introspection + heavy alloc on iPhone

I have a problem. I try to display a UITable that could have 2000-20000 records (typicall numbers.) I have a SQLite database similar to the Apple contacts application. I do all the tricks I know to get a smoth scroll, but I have a problem. I load the data in 50 recods blocks. Then, when the user scroll, request next 50 until finish the list. However, load that 50 records cause a notable "pause" in loading and scrolling. Everything else works fine. I cache the data, have opaque cells, draw it by code, etc... I swap the code loading the same data in dicts and have a performance boost but wonder if I could keep my object oriented aproach and improve the actual code. I'd like to add core data to an existing iPhone project, but I still get a lot of compile errors: NSManagedObjectContext undeclared Expected specifier-qualifier-list before 'NSManagedObjectModel' ... I already added the Core Data Framework to the target (right click on my project under "Targets", "Add" - "Existing Frameworks", "CoreData.framework"). wmi not available for some time after reboot

I'm having the problem with the WMI availability on logon.
