• Digital Signature Device Recommendations (Mini Tablet)

  I'd like to capture signatures of application users with a mini-tablet/little pos signature device. I welcome any first hand experiences of which ones were good and which ones to stay away from. Off the top of my head I can think of a few features I'd like to see: USB interface Not too expensive (I don't know 100-200 dollars?) Be easy to integrate with a managed .NET application Also I realize most people, myself included, think of digitally signing assemblies with code instead of a mini-tablet device, if there is a more accurate phrase for this pleas let me know. • How can I differentiate between smart phones and others?

  Hi all, I'm looking to revamp our mobile site with something simple for phones below the ambiguous smart phone category and something a little more interesting for the phones above this category. I'm not interested in WAP/WML for this project. I'm building a ASP.Net 4 MCV 2 app and using MBDF What I'd like to know is how best to define this differentiation when using MBDF? Screen size, Javascript, SpportsTouchScreen etc. are all in MBDF along with others but I'm not sure where to draw the line and where the data is most accurate for the broad number of devices. What do those of you out there developing for this spread of hardware & software split on? Thanks, Denis P.S. I've done my research on xHTML MP1.0 - 1.2 and the best practises for implementation to ensure broad coverage but I don't want to restrict the newer phones out there to what the base line can see.

• free geolocation geoip, are they viable?

  I'm trying to get a visitor's location based on their IP, pretty common stuff. My research so far shows that there's a database from MaxMind that costs $370 + $90/month... not the type of cost I can afford. Then there's a free version called GeoLite City. Anyone used these before? Drop a quick line here please. Why is one free and the answer so expensive. Is the free one usable, is it not as accurate, what's the catch? P.S. Any other suggestions are welcome.

• NSString to NSData Failing in Encoding

  I'm trying to use NSXmlParser to parse ISO-8859-1 data. Using Apple's own example for parsing ISO-8859-1, I have the following. NSString *xmlFilePath = [[NSBundle mainBundle] pathForResource:sampleFileName ofType:@"xml"]; NSString *xmlFileContents = [NSString stringWithContentsOfFile:xmlFilePath encoding:NSISOLatin1StringEncoding error:nil]; NSLog(@"contents: %@", xmlFileContents); I see that in the console, the contents of the string is accurate. However when I try to convert it to an NSData object (for use with the parser), I do the following. NSData *xmlData = [xmlFileContents dataUsingEncoding:NSISOLatin1StringEncoding]; But then when my didStartElement delegate gets called, I see  showing up which I think is from an encoding discrepancy. Can NSXmlParser handle ISO-8859-1 and if so, what am I doing wrong?

• MSSQL DATEDIFF accuracy

  Hello, I have to store some intervals in mssql db. I'm aware that the datetime's accuracy is approx. 3.3ms (can only end 0, 3 and 7). But when I calculate intervals between datetimes I see that the result can only end with 0, 3 and 6. So the more intervals I sum up the more precision I loose. Is it possible to get an accurate DATEDIFF in milliseconds ? declare @StartDate datetime declare @EndDate datetime set @StartDate='2010-04-01 12:00:00.000' set @EndDate='2010-04-01 12:00:00.007' SELECT DATEDIFF(millisecond, @StartDate, @EndDate),@EndDate-@StartDate, @StartDate, @EndDate I would like to see 7 ad not 6. • Guessing the time zone from an arbitrary "location" string?

  I'm trying to run some statistics over the Stack Overflow data dump, and for that I would like to know the time zone for each user. However, all I have to go on is the completely free-form "location" string. I'll stress that I'm only looking for an approximation of the time zone; of course, in general this is an unsolvable problem. However, many people fill out their country, state and/or city, which should give a pretty good indication. It's okay if it fails for other cases. It doesn't have to be reliable, it doesn't have to be accurate, it doesn't have to cover all bases. I don't want to waste too much time on this, so I'm wondering if there is some code out there that can make a reasonable guess. Any language, platform, API or library goes. Any ideas?

• Rails Routing Broken In Production - Caching of routes.rb suspected

  Hi folks, i have an urgent problem. Essentially, my routing works on my localhost. But when i deployed this to production, the routes does not seem to work correctly. For example, given a new route "/invites" - sometimes i will get a 404, and sometimes it will work correctly. I suspect there is some caching going on somewhere, but i am not sure. • Low Power Speed Monitoring

  I am aware of speed detection via gps, however as a background app, I am concerned about high power drain. I am looking to detect speed, say over 5mph, but it does not have to be accurate, say like a speedometer. Is there a low power way to detect if the phone is in motion, say by triangulation, or tracking tower strength and new/recently lost towers? I have an app design that is dependent on running in the background upon launch and knowing if the phone is in a car or not. Thanks!

When discussing new solutions and architectures we often encounter impedance in trying to compare the various technologies, frameworks, APIs etc. in use between the two camps. It seems that each camp knows little about the other and we end up comparing apples to oranges and forgetting about the bushels. While researching the topic I found this: Java -- .Net rough equivalents It's a nice list but it's not quite exhaustive and is missing the key .NET 3.0 technologies and a few other tidbits. To complete that list: what are the near/rough equivalents (or a combination of technologies) in Java to the following in .NET? WCF WPF Silverlight WF Generics Lambda expressions Linq (not Linq-to-SQL) TPL F# IronPython IronRuby ...have i missed anything else? Note that I omitted technologies that are already covered in the linked article. I would also like to hear feedback on whether the linked article is accurate. Thanks.

  A colleague of mine made an assertion that "your employer owns all patents that you file while an employee". Is this accurate? For example: Suppose I'm an employee of company xyz where I make widgets of type "w". In my spare time I make widgets of type "t" as a hobby. I do not use any resources from company xyz at all for my hobby. Also the widget types are completely different. For example w could be lawn mower wheels and t could be sliding door frames (so I'm not using any skills learned from my employment at company xyz when making widgets of type t). If I were to file and receive a patent for widgets of type t would company xyz have any rights/ownership to this at all?

  I've decided that as a pet project meant for learning, I would create a new Eclipse plug-in that, for a given class, takes all private member names and adds a prefix to their name (it doesn't matter to me if it can already be done or not, this is meant to be a learning experience). I have never developed an Eclipse plug-in and I'm not sure where to begin. Do I need to install some application for this development? How does it work? Where do I begin? I did a Google search but all the tutorials and results I found were old and referred to antiquated versions of Eclipse, so I'm not sure if they're still accurate.

  Hi guys, I am try to create a JSP page that will show all the status in a group of local servers. Currently I create a schedule class that will constantly poll to check the status of the server with 30 second interval, with 5 second delay to wait for each server reply, and provide the JSP page with the information. However I find this way to be not accurate as it will take some time before the information of the schedule class to be updated. Do you guys have a better way to check the status of several server within a local network?

• How to simulate different CPU frequency and limit RAM

  Hi I have to build a simulator with C#. This simulator should be able to run a second thread with configureable CPU speed and limited RAM size, e.g. 144MHz and 50 MB. Of course I know that a simulator can never be as accurate as the real hardware. But I try to get almost similar performance. At the moment I'm thinking about creating a thread which I will stop/sleep from time to time. Depending on the desired CPU speed the simulator should adjust the sleep time of this thread and therefore simulate different cpu frequency. To measure the achieved speed I though about using PerformanceCounters. But with this approach I have the problem that I don't know how to limit the RAM size the thread could use. Do you have any ideas how to realize such a simulator? Thanks in advance!!

  I've been looking for a method to convert docx or wordml xml to xsl-fo. I read this post: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/156683/what-is-the-best-xslt-engine-for-perl but I'm having exceptional problems getting apache-fop going. I was able to download the bins and run it locally but the formatting was a little off and it didn't maintain the headers and footers or section 1 or section 3 (17 page doc 3 sections) it also overlapped the text over the outline numbers and did not maintain the font used. trying a more simple test caused fop to fail completely. I would like to find a way to create a PDF that is at least close to 100% accurate reproduction of the original doc.

  I'm sitting at work, waiting for traffic to die down. The thought occurred to me. I know when I want to go home, why don't I have an app that watches traffic for me? I also know that there are a lot of smart people on stackoverflow. Where can I get live traffic data for the san francisco bay area region? The data source should be timely, accurate, and as high resolution as possible. I would like to build an app on top of a service, rather than watch google maps or watch another website. I would prefer that I not have to scrape the data, but I have been know to do this in the past when no other option exists.

I've skimmed over the PHP MSSQL documentation and it looks similar to MySQLi in some of the methods I read about. For example, with MySQL I utilize the function mysql_real_excape_string(). Is there a similar function with PHP/SQL Server? What steps do I need to take in order to protect against SQL injection with SQL Server?   When interviewing entry level developers, I have used the FizzBuzz question as a type of acid test. Generally, I ask for a solution in pseudo-code or any language of their choice. If someone can't answer this question -- or get reasonably close, the interview generally ends shortly thereafter and we don't progress to more interesting code questions. In your opinion, is it fair/appropriate/accurate to filter entry-level staff in this manner? Should the average four year college graduate have a reasonable enough foundation to be able to throw up a pseudo-code solution of FizzBuzz?

  I'm trying to use the right_aws (1.10.0) GEM with Rails, and I've reduced my problem to a 3-line irb session. The following works require 'rubygems' require 'right_aws' sqs = RightAws::Sqs.new("xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx", "xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx") while this fails require 'rubygems' require 'right_aws' sqs = RightAws::SqsGen2.new("xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx", "xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx") with NameError: uninitialized constant RightAws::SqsGen2. I see the class definition in the GEM source, the documentation is old but seems accurate, but I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. And while you're at it, is there any reason if I'm building something new, I'd want to use the older interface?

• JQUERY-UI Draggables - Seralize is running before the Draggable is complete

  Hello, I'm using the JQUERY-UI draggable plugin. As a setting, when the Draggable is done, using the STOP setting I run a function to seralize a list of LIs to get their order in terms of their IDs. For example, if I have an UL, with a list of LIs with the following IDs: 1,2,3,4,5 If I then move 5, between 2&3, the seralize is returning: 1,2,5,3,4,5 Which makes me think that the JQUERY UI-Draggable STOP is running before the page is finished rendering, or the DOM isn't update? Any ideas on how I can fix this from happening. Is there something I can do in my Seralize funtion to say, wait till JQUERY animations are all done, or stop all that are going on to ensure the DOM is accurate? Thanks
