  • Why does my Internet slow to a crawl unless I reboot my router every few days?

    A few weeks ago, I noticed that my Internet connection had slowed down to a crawl. I waited a few days hoping it would go away on its own, but it didn't get better. So I asked this question about how to make it faster. The problem went away after I updated to the latest firmware, so I didn't follow up too carefully. But every few days since then, my Internet has slowed down again. Unlike before, all I have to do to fix it is open the router administration page and press the "Reboot" button. Nothing else seems to work, though I'm sure there are options I haven't tried. If it makes a difference, my girlfriend and I both transfer large amounts of data fairly routinely for school (videoconferencing, downloading entire recorded lectures). The router is a Cisco/Linksys 160N V3 that's about a year old. Most of the time, it deals with just two standard Windows 7 laptops. The only thing I came across while searching for answers/dupes was this question, which seems similar superficially, but probably doesn't have the same root issue. Anyways, it's not resolved. What could be causing these slowdowns, and how can I get rid of them?

  • How to run a WebPy server on port 8080 using DDNS of dlink router and to access this site from internet?

    I have two major issue with setting up a web server using my dlink DIR-600L router. Issue 1: I run a WebPy server on port 8080. But the DDNS service providers (like dlinkddns.com or dyndns.org) only allows port 80. I can run the server in port 80 with sudo command. But my server become vulnerable if i give root access. So I tried port forwarding in the router and server. But no use. I don't know if I done that correctly. Issue 2: Even though the server runs on port 80, I can access my site from my local machines only using registered domain names ( say, nikz.dyndns.org). No one on internet cannot load this site even when its totally up. As I observed server log, the request from other clients never reached my server. I need to run this server on port 8080 and i need to access this site from internet. How can I do it? any idea?

  • How to set up multiple SSIDs with bandwidth limiting on a single wireless router?

    I have an Asus WL-520GU wireless router connected to a cable modem that I use for wireless internet access in my apartment. I would like to set it up so that it provides two SSIDs: one secured and password-protected for my regular use, and a "guest" SSID that's unsecured but throttled to, say, 10% of the available bandwidth. What is the most straightforward way to do this? I've been looking into DD-WRT and Tomato, both of which support my router. DD-WRT supports setting up multiple SSIDs using the GUI, but I don't know if it's possible to limit the bandwidth of each SSID independently; point #12 in this FAQ thread says it's not possible to limit by day or by MAC address, which is discouraging but not conclusive. Tomato allows bandwidth limits in its QoS settings, going by the screenshot here, but multiple SSID support is still experimental and it doesn't look like it will work with the encryption settings or bandwidth limits in the GUI. I'd like to know a good way to do this which gives me the fewest opportunities for screwing up. I'm no stranger to the command line, if that turns out to be what's necessary, but if so, please explain what the commands are doing because I don't have a good mental model of what needs to happen to set this up.

  • Windows 7 - Wireless Signal Good - Internet Often Says Limited or No Activity

    Hi - I have a New Dell Studio XPS latop that I hooked up in early January of 2010. The Dell Studio XPS laptop is connected to my wireless router (Belkin Wireless N). The router was purchased in Februaru of 2010 because I thought my router was bad (A D-Link router). Comcast is my ISP. Everyday, at random times, the internet will have a good signal (according to the little Win 7 icon on the taskbar) but I will receive a message saying limited or no internet access and I cannot access the internet. I have the internet setup to automatically get an IP and I did the IPCONFIG release / renew but with no success. I even had a WiFi enabled Blackberry right next to my computer and whenever the computer loses an WiFi connection, so does the Blackberry. The router isnt't bad, because the old router did the same thing - giving me limited or no internet access while working sometimes. I also tried using two other laptops in same physical position as my Dell Studio XPS laptop and they have the same problem. I am going crazy trying to figure this out as I have called the Router Company (Belkin), my ISP (Comcast), and my computer maker (Dell). Can anyone offer some suggestions and I can try them as we work through this and maybe one of the suggestion will be right one. Thanks in advance for even reading my problem. I searched for a problem similar to mine on the internet, but I have not been able to keep a steady internet connection. (Side note - I used to have an IBM thinkpad laptop and D - Link router and for years that wireless connection worked FLAWLESSLY, with the same physical set up - the laptop in my bedroom, and the router in the basement.)

  • Router has traffic coming in, but it's not going anywhere. What can I do?

    Ok so I have a Linksys WRT-54G v4 running the latest version of DD-WRT (just downloaded it last week to try to fix the problem) There is consistently about 750kbs coming into the router but from what I can tell, it's not going anywhere inside the LAN or WLAN. I'm also having alot of network dropouts while I'm listening to music or watching video over the network. Since we are moving to Norway (Europe) soon, we want something that would also work there (with a new SIM card and service provider, of course). Does anyone know if this device will work in Norway?     We are using the basic Verizon router but it sucks so we're looking for a new one that allows us to limit users and our hadoop cluster to certain limits. Our problem is one person can start downloading something and kill the network and every hour we download logs into our cluster but it floods the network unless we rate limit it. Ideally we want to be able to say: total: 35 mbps Hadoop Cluster (15 mbps) Phones (1 mbps) Office(25 people) (19mbps but no one machine can have more than 5mbps)

My question is this - should my (linux) router act as the DNS server for this? Or should I have a seperate machine on the network acting as the DNS server? Does it not matter as long as all the machines on the network are configured to resolve to the internal DNS server?

I went on the dd-wrt web site and I read the wiki, but I didn't see any files or instructions on how to change the firmware. The router database lists my router, but as I said: no files. In addition the "Supported" column lists "wip", what is wip?   • no way to use opendns on pppoe connection?

    I have an old speedtouch usb modem (revision 0) and on my desktop with xubuntu 12.04 I've configured a pppoe connection. I can connect and my ISP assign an IP address and the DNS but the primary DNS address is not reachable by ping, the secondary yes but no address is resolved then I can't surf the web. Then I want to set the open DNS but there is bo way, if I change manually /etc/resolv.conf it is rewrited by some script (there is the flag usepeerdns on the configuration script, if I exclude it there is no way to assign any DNS server because resolv.conf is not read) also if I set not writable the file changing the default permission. I changed dhclient.conf with the code prepend domain-name-servers 208.67.222.222,208.67.220.220; and now if I connect by a wifi connection to my router I'm using openDNS server but ppp does not use this script as long as I can see and the DNS server is always setted by my ISP. How can I use set DNS manually to a PPP connection? Is there any way to change it after the connection? Why NetworkManager is not able to manage my dsl connection, it seems not able to manage the dsl usb cable modem. If I use pppoeconf NetworkManager doesn't start and I have to manually delete the lines added to /etc/network/interfaces because the system is not able to start with full configuration of network If I connect a modem-router to the same line I can surf with the DNS server assigned by my ISP, I can't figure why.   • exchange live feed with pre-recorded video for wireless internet camera to router

    I wasn't sure if this should be asked in Web Applications, or Network Engineering, or what... Long story short, I have a video camera with mic that is wirelessly connected to a router (NETGEAR R6200), which can then be viewed through an online service. I would like to be able to somehow exchange the live feed with a pre-recorded video, or image, preferably with pre-recorded sound (the sound of silence would be easiest). Can I place this inbetween the camera and the router, do I need to redirect the camera feed to my laptop first, and then push out the fake video/audio onto the router, without the service knowing the difference?     Before I had 25/5 service and the N standard router did just fine. Now it doesn't do the job. Online speedtest reads at 82 so I have the line. But my laptop is getting less than 30 in my room. My laptop has the following WiFi card: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/wireless-products/centrino-advanced-n-6205.html What is this talk about 2.4 and 5GHz? Can my laptop be connected at once over both bands? And would that let me use the full 70Mb over Wi-Fi?

  • Is there any viable alternative to using a linux/unix/BSD firewall/router/vpn?

    I am trying to purchase something to replace our Vyatta router that is running in a virtual machine on Hyper V (having the whole network go down when the host has to reboot is not convenient and I am getting the sense that this configuration may not be stable). Most posts on this topic suggest using Linux/OpenBSD/FreeBSD/etc with some recommendations to use appliances from vendors for specific purposes like firewall and VPN. We are a windows shop and it has been a stretch for us to make use of Vyatta but since it was free and straightforward to use we decided to use it. Now we need something that is easier for our team to (re)deploy and manage. I would rather purchase something windows based or an appliance that can do all of the following things: DHCP server (reservations, specified gateway, dns, etc) Static Routes that route traffic across three interfaces Easily Reproducible (Powershell script, Puppet, Chef, etc) Intuitive interface (Decent web interface would be fine but I don't want them to have to go to CLI) Does any one have any recommendations on what I should be looking at that might meet our needs?
