It has been another fantastic year for TechEd North America. I always love my time here. First, I have to give a huge thank you to Ineta for giving me the opportunity to work the Ineta booth and BOF’s (birds of a feather). I can not even begin to list how many fantastic leaders in the .Net space and Developers from all over I have met through Ineta at this event. It has been truly amazing and great fun!! New Orlean’s has been awesome. The night life is hoppin’. In addition to enjoying a few (too many??) of the local hurricanes in New Orleans, I have hung out with some of the coolest people Deepesh Mohnani, David Poll, Viresh, Alan Stephens, Shawn Wildermuth, Greg Leonardo, Doug Seven, Chris Willams, David Carley and some of our southcentral hero’s Jeffery Palermo, Todd Anglin, Shawn Weisfeld, Randy Walker, The midnight DBA’s, Zeeshan Hirani, Dennis Bottjer just to name a few. A big thanks to Microsoft and everyone that has helped to put TechEd together. I have loved hanging out with people from the Silverlight and Expression Teams and have learned a ton. I am ramped up and ready to take all that knowledge back to my co-workers and my community. I can not wait to see you all again next year in Atlanta!!! Highlighting rows and columns in an HTML table using JQuery

A friend of mine was seeking some help regarding HTML tables and JQuery. I have decided to write a few posts demonstrating the various techniques I used with JQuery to achieve the desired functionality. ?here are other posts in my blog regarding JQuery.You can find them all here.I have received some comments from visitors of this blog that are "complaining" about the length of the blog posts. I will not write lengthy posts anymore...I mean I will try not to do so..We will demonstrate this with a step by step example. I will use Visual Studio 2012 Ultimate. You can also use Visual Studio 2012 Express Edition. You can also use VS 2010 editions. 1) Launch Visual Studio. Create an ASP.Net Empty Web application. Choose an appropriate name for your application.2) Add a web form, default.aspx page to the application.3) Add a table from the HTML controls tab control (from the Toolbox) on the default.aspx page4) Now we need to download the JQuery library. Please visit the http://jquery.com/ and download the minified version.5) We will add a stylesheet to the application (Style.css)5) Obviously at some point we need to reference the JQuery library and the external stylesheet. Let me explain how this functionality is achieved.We have the .hover style rule in the style.css file that contains some properties that define the background color value and the color value when the mouse will be hovered on the row.In the JQuery code we do attach the hover() event to the tr elements.The function that is called when the hovering takes place, we search for the td element and through the addClass function we apply the styles defined in the .hover class rule in the style.css file.I remove the .hover rule styles with the removeClass function. Now let's say that we want to highlight only alternate rows of the table.We need to add another rule in the style.css.alternate { background-color:#42709b; color:#ff6a00;} The JQuery code (comment out the previous JQuery code) follows <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function() { $('table tr:odd').addClass('alternate'); }); </script> When I run my application through VS I see the following result You can do that with columns as well. Formal definition for term "pure OO language"?

I can't think of a better place among SO siblings to pose such a question. Originally I wanted to ask "Is python a pure OO language?" but considering troubles and some sort of discomfort people experience while trying to define the term I decided to start with obtaining a clear definition for the term itself. It would be rather fair to start with correspondence by Dr. Alan Kay, who has coined the term (note the inspiration in biological analogy to cells or other living objects). There are following ways to approach the task: Give a comparative analysis by listing programming languages that exhibits certain properties unique and sufficient to define the term (although Smalltalk and Java are passing examples but IMO this way seems neither really complete or nor fruitful) Give a formal definition (or close to it, e.g. in more academic or mathematical style). Give a philosophical definition that would totally rely on semantical context of concrete language or a priori programming experience (there must be some chance of successful explanation by the community). My current version: "If a certain programing (formal) language that can (grammatically) differentiate between operations and operands as well as infer about the type of each operand whether this type is an object (in sense of OOP) or not then we call such a language an OO-language as long as there is at least one type in this language which is an object. Finally, if all types of the language are also objects we define such language to be pure OO-language." Would appreciate any possible improvement of it. As you can see I just made the definition dependent on the term "object" (often fully referenced as class of objects).

There is No Scrum without Agile

It's been interesting for me to dive a little deeper into Scrum after realizing how fragile its adoption can be. I've been particularly impressed with James Shore's essay "Kaizen and Kaikaku" and the Net Objectives post "There are Better Alternatives to Scrum" by Alan Shalloway. The bottom line: You can't execute Scrum well without being Agile. Personally, I'm the rare developer who has an interest in project management. I think the methodology to deliver software is interesting, and that there are many roles whose job exists to make software development easier. As a project lead I've seen Scrum deliver for disciplined, highly motivated teams with solid engineering practices. It definitely made my job an order of magnitude easier. As a developer I've experienced huge rewards from having a well-defined pipeline of tasks that were consistently delivered with high quality in short iterations. In both of these cases Scrum was an addition to a fundamentally solid process and a huge benefit to the team. The question I'm now facing is how Scrum fits into organizations withot solid engineering practices. The trend that concerns me is one of Scrum being mandated as the single development process across teams where it may not apply. And we have to realize that Scurm itself isn't even a development process. This is what worries me the most - the assumption that Scrum on its own increases developer efficiency when it is essentially an exercise in project management. Jim's essay quotes Tobias Mayer writing, "Scrum is a framework for surfacing organizational dysfunction." I'm unsure whether a Vice President of Software Development wants to hear that, reality nonwithstanding. Our Scrum adoption has surfaced a great deal of dysfunction, but I feel the original assumption was that we would experience increased efficiency. It's starting to feel like a blended approach - Agile/XP techniques for developers, Scrum for project managers - may be a better fit. Or at least, a better way of framing the conversation. Project Jigsaw: On the next train

I recently proposed to defer Project Jigsaw from Java 8 to Java 9. Feedback on the proposal was about evenly divided as to whether Java 8 should be delayed for Jigsaw, Jigsaw should be deferred to Java 9, or some other, usually less-realistic, option should be taken. The ultimate decision rested, of course, with the Java SE 8 (JSR 337) Expert Group. After due consideration, a strong majority of the EG agreed to my proposal. In light of this decision we can still make progress in Java 8 toward the convergence of the higher-end Java ME Platforms with Java SE. I previously suggested that we consider defining a small number of Profiles which would allow compact configurations of the SE Platform to be built and deployed. JEP 161 lays out a specific initial proposal for such Profiles. There is also much useful work to be done in Java 8 toward the fully-modular platform in Java 9. Alan Bateman has submitted JEP 162, which proposes some changes in Java 8 to smooth the eventual transition to modules, to provide new tools to help developers prepare for modularity, and to deprecate and then, in Java 9, actually remove certain API elements that are a significant impediment to modularization. Thanks to everyone who responded to the proposal with comments and questions. As I wrote initially, deferring Jigsaw to a Java 9 release in 2015 is by no means a pleasant decision. It does, however, still appear to be the best available option, and it is now the plan of record.

Another favicon not working in IE...

Hi, I've read through and tried all the favicon fixes already posted. Including: Refreshing the cache Using a different favicon that works on other websites Using a favicon generating website Using a Photoshop favicon plugin Using an absolute path Using a relative path It works fine in all the other browsers. I'm using IE8 in Vista via Parallels on a Mac. script: http://keith-wood.name/countdown.htm daily json response: items: { fajr: '5:23 am', sharooq: '7:23 am', dhur: '1:34 pm', asr: '4:66 pm': magrib: '6:23 pm', isha: '8:01 pm'} when site loads i make ajax request and get the above response times, these are events that happens daily for everyday, but different timing. i want to get that time and put a count down on how many minitues left or hours or seconds and show that and once the seconds are done, then show how many minitues ago that event took place, after 15 minitues later show new even count down. so following on how it will look on display dhur 2 hours left dhur 2 minutes left (if no longer hours left) dhur 55 seconds left (if no longer minutes left) dhur 5 seconds ago (if count down finished and then show how many seconds ago) dhur 9 minutes ago (if extended more then seconds, then show how many minutes ago) asr 1 hour left (after 15 minutes later time changes to new event) this is kind of very simple for pro in javascript and really complicated for me, so need your guys help, if the script im using not good and you prefer some other script for this kind of task, please share with me, it dont have to be jquery script, but helps if its jquery.

I am really curious if somebody knows a way to keep the View-First Approach and change the screen (view) to the "BeachView". I know there are several ways to implement it in a ViewModel-First Approach, but that is not the question. Perhabs I missed something in my mvvm investigation and can't see the wood for the trees... otherwise i am hoping for a inspiring discussion.

I know my question reads a bit like that 'how much wood can a woodchuck chuck' line, please excuse that... I have a repeater with checkboxes. There are numerous rows in this repeater - I never know how many - I want only one checkbox checked at any time. If the user changes the checked checkbox, any pre-existing checks are unchecked therefore maintaining a single checked checkbox. I am using VB, but comfortable to port any C#. I want to use JQuery. I have been looking on Google, but only ever seem to find ALL checked, ALL unchecked systems. Any suggestions?

How do I backup my C++ Builder component installation?

Hi I finally have my c++ Builder 2010 installation the way I want it, with all my components upgraded and installed. (touch wood) I have been working with c++builder since version 1 and I know from countless previous traumatic experiences that this state of affairs could change in an instant. I would like to backup the installation and component set. Is there a way to do this? A tool perhaps? A menu command that I have maybe missed all these years? I don't want to have to reinstall all the components from the bpl source again. I make nightly backup images of my entire drive, I would like to do this for c++builder only if possible. If it's a matter of simply copying files, which files would I need to copy? Are there entries in the registry that would need to be restored? Thanks in advance for any thoughts and suggestions

jQuery.keypad Performance Issues

I am working on a Kiosk Touch Screen application and using the JQuery.keypad plugin and noticing some major performance issues. If you click a number of buttons in rapid succession the CPU gets pegged, the button clicks don't keep up with the clicking and some button presses even get lost. On my dev machine this isn't as noticeable, but on the Kiosk itself with 1 gig of ram it's painful. Trying the demo keypad at http://keith-wood.name/keypad.html#inline the one with multiple targets (which is the case with mine) has the exact same issues. Does anyone have any suggestions on how we might be able to improve this? The Kiosk runs in Firefox only so something specific to that would work. I'm using v1.2.1 of jquery.keypad and just upgraded to v1.4.2 of jquery.

How do you remove/clean-up code which is no longer used?

So, we have a project which had to be radically descoped in order to ship on time. It's got a lot of code left in it which is not actually used. I want to clean up the code, removing any dead-wood. I have the authority to do it and I can convince people that it's a commercially sensible thing to do. [I have a lot of automated unit tests, some automated acceptance tests and a team of testers who can manually regression test.] My problem: I'm a manager and I don't know technically how to go about it. Any help?
