• MySQL Inserting into locked aliased table

  I am trying to insert data into a InnoDB MySQL table which is locked using an alias and I cannot for the life of me get it to work! The following works: LOCK TABLES Problems p1 WRITE, Problems p2 WRITE, Server READ; SELECT * FROM Problems p1; UNLOCK TABLES; But try and do an insert and it doesn't work (it claims there is a syntax error round the 'p1' in my INSERT): LOCK TABLES Problems p1 WRITE, Problems p2 WRITE, Server READ; INSERT INTO Problems p1 (SomeCol) VALUES(43534); UNLOCK TABLES; Help please!

  Hi everyone, A friend of mine is a Java developer, who's using *NIX for ages. He claims that *NIX is for real Java geeks, whereas WIN is for dummies (and I'm one of them, according to him) and girls. When I ask him to argue his position, and explain, what's so good for Java developer on *NIX, he starts talking about console, wget, curl and grep. But sorry, wget and curl analogues exist for the WIN platform as well. As for the console - I'm using FAR Commander, and have access to the command line when I need. Moreover, even if I decide moving to *NIX, I will certainly use Netbeans or Eclipse on it, so there will be no big difference. Guys, who use Java on *NIX, could you please give me some real killer examples, when *NIX (any util or technique) dramatically increases Java development productivity (in the way the hints are given in "The Pragmatic Programmer"), or, which is also important, gives more fun from the process.   I've seen contradictory answers on the internet with regard to whether C++/CLI is a superset of C++ or not. The accepted answer on this question claims that "technically no", but doesn't provide an examples of non-C++/CLI code that conforms to ISO C++. Another answer on that question cites a book that says the opposite. So, can you please provide accurate answers with example code that fails on C++/CLI or cite a trusted source (MSDN for example) on this matter? I had someone this topic come up today and thought I would like to inform myself, but I didn't find any clear answer elsewhere!

• Caching result of setUp() using Python unittest

  I currently have a unittest.TestCase that looks like.. class test_appletrailer(unittest.TestCase): def setup(self): self.all_trailers = Trailers(res = "720", verbose = True) def test_has_trailers(self): self.failUnless(len(self.all_trailers) > 1) # ..more tests.. This works fine, but the Trailers() call takes about 2 seconds to run.. Given that setUp() is called before each test is run, the tests now take almost 10 seconds to run (with only 3 test functions) What is the correct way of caching the self.all_trailers variable between tests? Removing the setUp function, and doing.. class test_appletrailer(unittest.TestCase): all_trailers = Trailers(res = "720", verbose = True) ..works, but then it claims "Ran 3 tests in 0.000s" which is incorrect..   file_get_contents() is returning "failed to open stream" when I call it on an HTTPS URL. Warning: file_get_contents(https://google.com) [function.file-get-contents]: failed to open stream: No error in E:\\htdocs\callback3.php on line 5 Same call will work with a non-SSL URL. At first, I thought it was a security issue with my webhoster, but I have verified with phpinfo() that allow url open is indeed allowed. I have also tried this code and verified it works: Anyone have any ideas why file_get_contents() is failing with an HTTPS URL? update: People correctly pointed out this was an HTTPS issue. My webhoster claims this should work, and has no idea how to resolve this. Anyone have specific directions I can give them for their IIS7 setup?

• Compiling Qt for Windows 98

  I need to support Windows 98. The Qt documentation claims this is possible, but there are no instructions. The distributed binaries don't run on Win98 and the majority of Qt applications I have sampled also don't. For several apps that do run on 98, I have asked authors how they did it, but the common answer is that it was accidental and they don't know what factors caused it. In searching the forums for help, I found only guesses that turned out to be wrong. For example, one belief is that to compile for Win9x, you must build the tools and the apps on that platform. Yet, things I found to run were built on newer versions of Windows. What is required to build the Qt dev tools and then applications for Win98? How about cross-compiling from WinXP or Linux? Are there specific components that can't be made to run on Win98? Are there particular difficulties with dynamic or static linking for Win98 support?

• MD5 hash validation failing for unknown reason in PHP

  I'm writing a login form, and it converts the given password to an MD5 hash with md5($password), then matches it to an already-hashed record in my database. I know for sure that the database record is correct in this case. However, it doesn't log me in and claims the password is incorrect. Here's my code: $password = mysql_real_escape_string($_POST["password"]); ...more code... $passwordQuery = mysql_fetch_row(mysql_query(("SELECT password FROM users WHERE email = '$userEmail'"))); ...some code... elseif(md5($password) != $passwordQuery) { $_SESSION["noPass"] = "That password is incorrect."; } ...more code after... I tried pulling just the value of md5($password) and that matched up when I visually compared it. However, I can't get the comparison to work in PHP. Perhaps it is because the MySQL record is stored as text, and the MD5 is something else?

• Why does this VBS scheduled task (to call a URL) not work in Windows Server 2008?

  This same script worked in older server OS environments, and even on my desktop; and allows me to kick off a nightly process on my website's URL. It simply will not execute the URL in my Windows Server 2008 environment. It does not generate any errors, claiming task completion I can pull the same URL up just fine in the server's web browser I have the script running with "highest privileges" I even tried to create a batch file which executes it, so I can explicitly "Run as Administrator" and it still will not execute the URL (but will not generate any errors either). • SDL versus GLFW?

  What are the pros and cons to each? It seems they serve the same purpose. I have a few demos with each and they seem about the same. Performance or cross platform wise, is one better than the other? The only thing I notice is that SDL seems to have more "helper" libraries (fonts, images, mixer, built in sound support, etc). On its site, GLFW claims to be more "OpenGL" focused, but still have to use a GLEW to get any newer OpenGL features (same with SDL). I guess I'm leaning towards using SDL now (more mature, more features, more community). Are there any reasons I've missed why GLFW stands out and I should use it instead of SDL?

• Is it possible to run C++ binded with SDL+OpenGL code on a web browser?

  My client wants her website to have an application that renders 3D (light 3D stuff, we are drawing only flat squares in 3D world) but web programming is not my thing. So I am looking for something that can run a C++ program from a web browser. But I think, if this is the case, then the client side must download the program first, and that's not what I want. The client should only be able to use this application only on the website. I came across Google Native Client, which claims that it can run x86 native code in web applications. I haven't decide whether it is worth it or not and I don't know whether this is what I want or not, so I decided to ask experienced people about this. If I want to have something like this, is what I said above possible? Or I completely need other languages like Flex because it does not worth the trouble? Or is Google Native Client suitable for doing something like this?

• Getting search results from Twitter in php

  I'm attempting to put together a little mashup with some twitter APIs. However, the whole area is new to me (I'm more of an embedded developer dabbling). And frustratingly, every tutorial I am trying in Php is either out of date, not doing what it claims to do, it or is broken. Essentially, I just want a nice bit of example code - say, an HTML file, a connection.js for the JQuery magic, and a php file - 'getsearch' which contains the relevant Curl calls to the API to just return the results for a given search term. Followed the tutorial to the letter at http://www.reynoldsftw.com/2009/02/using-jquery-php-ajax-with-the-twitter-api/ and even downloaded the guy's code and chucked it on my webserver, but it just seems to sit there. I'm relatively competent at php and html, but it's the Curl and the JQuery side of things which is new to me, and would appreciate any thoughts, links, or code suggestions. I've attempted reading the API - but even that seems sparse - and several links are broken to their own tutorials, so that's put me off a bit for now.

• BlackBerry responseXML is null

  I'm trying to port a portion of AJAX code I wrote over to the BlackBerry application's embedded browser. Our base build is 4.6.1 and the RIM documentation claims that XMLHttpRequest's responseXML is available starting with this version. And when I request an XML file from my local server, I get back the responseText (so I know the request is working), but the responseXML is always null. I've made sure the HTTP "Content-Type" header is set to "text/xml" and I am getting the correct data loaded in a web browser. It's just nulling out in the BB web environment. Does anyone know what might be happening? A backup of using the responseText and piping it through DOMParser is not possible because that object was not added to the BB browser until 4.7.1. So I'm not sure what fallback I have.

  Hello, I'm developing a JEE application to run on Glassfish: Database (javaDB, MS SQL, MySQL or Oracle) EJB layer with JPA (Toplink essentials - from Glassfish) for database access JSF/Icefaces based web UI accessing the EJB layer The application will have a lot of concurrent web client, so I want to run it on different physical servers and use a load-balancer. My problem is now how to keep the applications synchronized. I intend to set up multiple servers, each running Glassfish with my EAR app installed. Whenever on one of the servers data is added to or removed from the database (via JPA, no direct SQL queries), this change should be reflected in the JPA layer on the other servers. I've been looking around for solutions to this, but couldn't find anything I really like (the full Toplink from Oracle claims to have a solution, but don't know). Doing a refresh before every access to a JPA entity could work, but is far from efficient. Are there any patterns, libraries, ... that could help here? Thanks a lot!

  Hi folks, what is your opinion or better off your practical experience using WCF to work with WSS instead of SP web services? I am writing some custom library for our software to store and retrieve files from WSS document libraries using sharepoint web services. I am not entirely happy with the performance of the sp web services - a bit too slow in many cases. Now, microsoft claims a significant improvements in WCF over remoting and I am looking into a good way to use WCF for my file services. Any suggestions or ideas? • Is there any conflict between NFS and calling getFD().sync()?

  My boss is worried that our NFS file system will not be happy with the jboss run java process calling getFD().sync on the files we are writing. We have noticed that frequently the time stamp on the created file is minutes (sometimes as many as 15 minutes) after the log claims the file was finished writing. My only guess is that the NFS is hanging on to the file in memory and not writing it till it feels like it. sync should solve that probelm, right? I also noticed that there is never a close() called on the file. Wondering if that could have been the cause as well? any thoughts appreciated.

  I have looked at the Android API and other posts here on stackoverflow, but have not been able to figure this out. My app downloads files to the sd card. I would like to pop a "loading..." dialog while the file is downloading and then have it disappear when the download is finished. This is what i came up with using the android API: ProgressDialog pd = ProgressDialog.show(this,"","Loading. Please wait...",true); //download file pd.cancel(); however the dialog doesn't actually show. when i debug it, it claims that it is showing, but it is obviously not on the screen. what can i do?

• Compiling C Source with Makefile in Windows

  I'm trying to compile a downloaded program in Windows. The program is usually run in Linux, but is programmed to also run in Windows (the code has #if defined(_WIN32)'s in it, and claims to work with borland free tools). When I try to use make from the command line, it tells me "Incorrect command line argument: -C". In the makefile, there are many lines that say "make -C" followed by a directory name. Does this syntax not work in Windows? What is a correct way to do this? Is there any way to compile this for native use in Windows with this makefile?

• How do I validate that my the openid.op_endpoint when a request is completed.

  I have an Open ID based authentication system on my site. Occasionally users will have an account registered under [email protected] and they will attempt to login using the google open id provider https://www.google.com/accounts/o8/id, in this case I would like to automatically associate the account and log them in. When the process is done I get a payload from somewhere claiming that openid.op_endpoint=https://www.google.com/accounts/o8/id. My question: Can I trust openid.op_endpoint to be correct? Can this be spoofed somehow by a malicious openid provider? For illustration, lets say someone types in http://evil.org as their openid provider, can I somehow end up getting a request back that claims openid.op_endpoint is google? Do I need to store extra information against the nonce to validate? The spec is kind of tricky to understand

• IE event for right-click delete on <input> or <textarea>

  What event is fired when you right-click on selected text in an <input> or <textarea> tag and the click "Delete" in Internet Explorer (I'm targeting version 9, but if it's good for lower versions too, all the better). On other browsers , the "input" event appears to work for all text changes through right-click so doing $("textarea").on("input", function() {...}); works. IE works for cut and paste, but not delete (JSFiddle here) although MDN claims that IE is supported.

• WPF C#: Starting crash due to client 'Region and Language' settings

  Hi, I'm working on a WPF C# application, and it seems to crash with a few random people. So eventually I found out it was the 'Region and Language' settings that was responsible. For example, if I were to set my Format to English (United States) it will work, if I set it to Swedish (Sweden) it will crash from the start. When I test this in Visual Studio 2010 it gives error 'TypeInitializationException'. More precisely it does it here (it doesn't get passed the InitializeComponent() void): private void RadioButton_Checked(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { Info.SortOrder = SortBy.Rank; } It claims the error at the first line, which is just setting an enum value to a variable. I guess it's just doing it there because it's the first thing it makes, or something. Anyone has any idea how to fix this? I've searched around but can't seem to find out how :( Any help is much appreciated! Thanks

  Hi, I have started learning Ruby for the past 2,3 weeks and I have come up with some findings on the language. Can someone please validate these points. Implemented in many other high level languages such as C, Java, .Net etc., Is slow for the obvious reason that it cannot beat any of the already known high level languages. Should never be compared with any other high level language. Not suitable for large applications. Completely open source and is in a budding state. Has a framework called Rails which claims that it would be good for Agile development Community out there is getting better day by day and finding help immediately should not be a problem as time goes by. Has significant changes between releases which many developers wont welcome right away. Running time cannot be comprehensively estimated since the language has several underlying implementation in several languages. Books are always outdated by the time when you finish them. Thanks.

• How to track down a Blue Screen of Death triggered by an (usermode) application

  We have a .Net application consisting of mixed managed and unmanaged code. We have a number of reports of users getting BSOD while using our application. These blue screens happen on different versions of Windows. Mostly XP but one user claims it happens on Windows 7. Some users see it happening when doing one thing, other see it happening when doing something completely different. Of course, we cannot reproduce the problem. Needless to say, I'm stumped. A user mode application shouldn't be able to blue screen the OS so we are running into a bug in a common kernel space application, perhaps buggy antivirus software? Does anyone have any tips on how to track something like this down? We don't have access to a computer where this is happening so we wouldn't be able to hook up a kernel debugger or anything like that.
