• Is it possible to run an old 16-bit DOS application under Windows 7 64-bit? [closed]

- by NFX
Possible Duplicate: Why 64 bit OS can't run a 16 bit application? How do I get 16-bit programs to work on a 64-bit Windows? Here at work my new development machine is Windows 7 64-bit (so I can use extra memory and run VMs). However I have a dilemma: it appears that 16-bit DOS programs do not run under Windows 7 64-bit. I have an old legacy program written in Clipper that I need to run periodically. I cannot access the compatibility setting as Windows 7 just greys them out.

• How to partition a fully used hard drive

- by MineCraftMan39
I installed Ubuntu on my laptop which when I got it I had Fedora 13 installed on it as the OS. Now I want to install Fedora 18 in a dual boot with Ubuntu. Problem is when I installed Ubuntu, I didn't partition for dual boot and I gave the entire hard drive to Ubuntu and no longer have the space to dual boot. How can I lower the partition on Ubuntu to make space on the hard drive for Fedora? I want to split the hard drive 50/50 between the two. Thanks in advance.

• DNS issue on Fedora 12? wget wordpress.org fails where wget www.google.com works

• What is the ideal way to set up multiple FTP enabled web accounts on Fedora?

- by Nicholas Flynt
I'm setting up a test server for use as a web development platform, and I'd like to mimic as closely as I can a typical shared hosting setup. That is, I'd like my server to have multple user FTP accounts, each of which links to a directory containing the webroot of the site, and I'd like apache to be able to easily see and manupulate these files. I'll admit: I'm not as familiar with Fedora as I'd like, I run Ubuntu on my home box and SElinux is giving me some grief. My initial plan was to have each user FTP into their home directory, and put the web directory there as well, but SElinux throws a hissy fit when apache tries to access anything outside of its web directory, so that plan was a no go. Would it be wise to continue this route, and perhaps mount web directories in user home folders so that FTP could still be used to access them, even though apache saw them in var/www like it expects? Would it make more sense to set up custom FTP accounts and use a single FTP user on the server box? What's the general course of action on something like this? I'm using vsftpd right now to host web directories, which is why I'm liking the home directory approach (it's simple and secure) but of course there's bound to be a better way to go about it. Thanks. (I'll leave other things, like restricted DB access and such, to another post. I'm interested right now with just getting FTP and apache to play nice in a multi-user environment.) PS: For the record, an issue I ran into when doing all of this was that if apache isn't running as the same user as the FTP account is saving as, there are permissions errors when FTP creates files, requiring the remote user to chmod the files to fix it. A logical fix would be to run apache in a special group, put all web users in this group, and have FTP access default to giving this group read/write access to everything like apache would expect, but I never could figure out how to accomplish this. Bonus points and cake if you know a solution.

• Fedora 13 becomes unresponsive when too many applications running.

- by user61766
I am using Fedora 13 64bit on Dell Vostro full 4GB RAM system with default Gnome GUI. This is very annoying problem that I don't how to fix except by rebooting the whole PC. When I have too many applications running ( like browser windows), the system start acting sluggish. The fist symptoms appear in Eclipse IDE which becomes so terrible it just becomes frozen for sometime one whole minute after I try to edit something in the editor. Then Firefox seems like it has crashed. Google Chrome becomes very unresponsive as well. All GUI applications including File manager becomes unresponsive. When I check System Monitor, the CPU is still around 20% and memory is at 80% but the system seems getting fried up. This progressively becomes worse until I soft reboot it or if I dont do it evetually the whole system is fried, no response to any keyboard key or mouse and I have to hit the hardware turn off button. I regularly yum update the system but this makes no difference. Please don't tell not to run too many applications because I need those for my work. I thought Linux is well designed Operating System but I am very disappointed so far. Can some one here help ?

• Why my VPN doesn't work anymore?

- by xx77aBs
I have openvpn server running on debian lenny. There is only one client - and it is running Windows 7 64-bit. This has worked for few months without any problems. And now, let's say for the last 7 days, it doesn't work at all. I connect successfully from client to the server, but I can't access anything through VPN. I have set it up so that all internet traffic is routed through VPN, and now when I connect with the client, the client can't do anything on the net (open any webpage, ping google, anything ...). Can you help me to figure out what's wrong ? I don't know where to start. I've also tried to connect to another openvpn server (I've installed and configured openvpn on another server, and when I try to connect to it result is the same). So I think there's something wrong with client ... I'm trying to setup web2py on my Fedora server, and the instructions, written for Debian, are telling me to install it in the /users/www-data directory. I realize that Fedora uses a default 'apache' user for running Apache, and Debian uses a 'www-data' user, but there's no corresponding /users/apache directory on my machine... Here are the instructions http://web2py.com/book/default/section/11/2

• SQL SERVER – ERROR – FIX – Msg 3702, Level 16, State 3, Line 1 Cannot drop database “MyDBName” because it is currently in use

- by pinaldave
I often go to do various seminars and presentations at various organizations. During presentations I often create and drop various databases for demonstrations purpose. Recently in one of the presentations, I tried to remove my recently created database, I got following error. Msg 3702, Level 16, State 3, Line 1 Cannot drop database “MyDBName” because it is currently in use. The reason was very simple as my database was in use by another session or window. I had option that I should go and find open session and close it right away; later followed by dropping the database. As I was in rush I quickly wrote down following code and I was able to successfully drop the database. USE MASTER GO ALTER DATABASE MyDBName SET SINGLE_USER WITH ROLLBACK IMMEDIATE; DROP DATABASE MyDBName GO Please note that I am doing all this on my demonstrations, do not run above code on production without proper approvals and supervisions. • Strings are UTF-16…. There is an error in XML document (1, 1).

- by Shawn Cicoria
I had a situation today where an xml document had a directive indicating it was utf-8.  So, the code in question was reading in the “string” of that xml then attempting to de-serialize it using an Xsd generated type. What you end up with is an exception indicating that there’s an error in the Xml document at (1,1) or something to that effect. The fix is, run it through a memory stream – which reads the string, but at utf8 bytes – if you have things that fall outside of 8 bit chars, you’ll get an exception.   //Need to read it to bytes, to undo the fact that strings are UTF-16 all the time. //We want it to handle it as UTF8. byte[] bytes = Encoding.UTF8.GetBytes(_myXmlString); TargetType myInstance = null; using (MemoryStream memStream = new MemoryStream(bytes)) { XmlSerializer tokenSerializer = new XmlSerializer(typeof(TargetType)); myInstance = (TargetType)tokenSerializer.Deserialize(memStream); }   Writing is similar – also, adding the default namespace prevents the additional xmlns additions that aren’t necessary:   XmlWriterSettings settings = new XmlWriterSettings() { Encoding = Encoding.UTF8, Indent = true, NewLineOnAttributes = true, }; XmlSerializerNamespaces xmlnsEmpty = new XmlSerializerNamespaces(); xmlnsEmpty.Add("", "http://www.wow.thisworks.com/2010/05"); MemoryStream memStr = new MemoryStream(); using (XmlWriter writer = XmlTextWriter.Create(memStr, settings)) { XmlSerializer tokenSerializer = new XmlSerializer(typeof(TargetType)); tokenSerializer.Serialize(writer, theInstance, xmlnsEmpty); }

As I understand, in this configuration ZFS/Nexentastor will not be able to tell when a disk fails in the array. Obviously, this is not optimal. Since the Dell Perc 5/i controller is a rebranded LSI controller, you should be able to use the MegaCli utility to manage the array and monitor its condition. I had seen in a separate forum that the Perc 5/i is very similar to the LSI MegaRAID 8480E, so I tried installing the MegaCli utility at the link below. However, I have not been able to successfully install the utility. http://www.lsi.com/support/products/Pages/MegaRAIDSAS8480E.aspx Here is what happened when I tried to install MegaCli: root@Nexenta2:/files# pkgadd -d MegaCli.pkg Warning: unable to relocate '$BASEDIR' mv: cannot move `solmegacli-8.02.16/' to a subdirectory of itself, `solmegacli-8.02.16//var/lib/dpkg/alien/solmegacli/reloc/solmegacli-8.02.16' mv: cannot move `solmegacli-8.02.16/' to a subdirectory of itself, `solmegacli-8.02.16//opt/solmegacli-8.02.16' 822-date: warning: This program is deprecated. I've got three questions: Is it possible to install and use MegaCli in Nexentastor 3? If so, how can I install MegaCli on Nexentastor 3? Suggestions welcome!!! If not, is there a better way to monitor the condition of the Perc 5/i hardware raid? Our 2950 does have a DRAC card, so can I use that to monitor the raid condition?

• How to set Grub to automatically load Xen kernel

- by Cerin
How do you configure Grub to automatically use the Xen kernel under Ubuntu 11.10? No matter what I do, it loads the first menuentry. The only way I can get it to load Xen is to manually select the kernel, which I can't do if I have to reboot the server remotely, or there's a power failure and the machine automatically boots up when power's restored, etc. It's driving me nuts. In my /boot/grub/grub.cfg, the Xen kernel is at index 4 (i.e. it's the 5th menuentry). So I've tried: Setting GRUB_DEFAULT=4, and running sudo update-grub Setting GRUB_DEFAULT=saved and GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT=true, and running sudo update-grub Setting GRUB_DEFAULT="Ubuntu GNU/Linux, with Xen 4.1-amd64 and Linux 3.0.0-16-server", and running sudo update-grub None of these work. It continues to load the first menuentry, which is "Ubuntu, with Linux 3.0.0-16-server". Below is my current /boot/grub/grub.cfg. What am I doing wrong? # # DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE # # It is automatically generated by grub-mkconfig using templates # from /etc/grub.d and settings from /etc/default/grub # ### BEGIN • which kernels can I safely purge?

- by ecoologic
I use the main answer of this question quite often to clear some space, but now I'm in extreme need and I'd like to better understand which kernels are safe to purge, my list is the following 10:50:58-673 - ~> dpkg -l | grep -Eo "^.i +linux-(image|headers)[^ ]+" | cut -c 5- | grep --color -E "$|"`uname -r` linux-headers-2.6.38-15 linux-headers-2.6.38-15-generic linux-headers-2.6.38-15-generic-pae linux-headers-2.6.38-16 linux-headers-2.6.38-16-generic linux-headers-2.6.38-16-generic-pae # current one linux-headers-generic linux-headers-generic-pae linux-headers-server linux-image-2.6.38-15-generic-pae linux-image-2.6.38-16-generic-pae linux-image-generic-pae linux-image-server Is it enough to keep linux-headers-2.6.38-15 linux-headers-2.6.38-15-generic linux-headers-2.6.38-15-generic-pae linux-headers-2.6.38-16 linux-headers-2.6.38-16-generic linux-headers-2.6.38-16-generic-pae # current one Or would this be enough linux-headers-2.6.38-15-generic-pae linux-headers-2.6.38-16-generic-pae # current one Or which other would be the shortest (keeping the previous one too)? And why?
