• SQL SERVER – Attach mdf file without ldf file in Database

  Background Story: One of my friends recently called up and asked me if I had spare time to look at his database and give him a performance tuning advice. Because I had some free time to help him out, I said yes. I asked him to send me the details of his database structure and sample data. He said that since his database is in a very early stage and is small as of the moment, so he told me that he would like me to have a complete database. My response to him was “Sure! In that case, take a backup of the database and send it to me. I will restore it into my computer and play with it.” He did send me his database; however, his method made me write this quick note here. Instead of taking a full backup of the database and sending it to me, he sent me only the .mdf (primary database file). In fact, I asked for a complete backup (I wanted to review file groups, files, as well as few other details).  Upon calling my friend,  I found that he was not available. Now,  he left me with only a .mdf file. As I had some extra time, I decided to checkout his database structure and get back to him regarding the full backup, whenever I can get in touch with him again. Technical Talk: If the database is shutdown gracefully and there was no abrupt shutdown (power outrages, pulling plugs to machines, machine crashes or any other reasons), it is possible (there’s no guarantee) to attach .mdf file only to the server. Please note that there can be many more reasons for a database that is not getting attached or restored. In my case, the database had a clean shutdown and there were no complex issues. I was able to recreate a transaction log file and attached the received .mdf file. There are multiple ways of doing this. I am listing all of them here. Before using any of them, please consult the Domain Expert in your company or industry. Also, never attempt this on live/production server without the presence of a Disaster Recovery expert. USE [master] GO -- Method 1: I use this method EXEC sp_attach_single_file_db @dbname='TestDb', @physname=N'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA\TestDb.mdf' GO -- Method 2: CREATE DATABASE TestDb ON (FILENAME = N'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA\TestDb.mdf') FOR ATTACH_REBUILD_LOG GO Method 2: If one or more log files are missing, they are recreated again. There is one more method which I am demonstrating here but I have not used myself before. According to Book Online, it will work only if there is one log file that is missing. If there are more than one log files involved, all of them are required to undergo the same procedure. -- Method 3: CREATE DATABASE TestDb ON ( FILENAME = N'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA\TestDb.mdf') FOR ATTACH GO Please read the Book Online in depth and consult DR experts before working on the production server. In my case, the above syntax just worked fine as the database was clean when it was detached. • Path is too long

  Bugged by the irritating "Path is too long after being fully qualified" error while running in the Development Fabric? The solution is pretty funny and not so obvious unfortunately. The culprit here is not your app, but the Development Fabric. The DevFab accumulates a lot of temporary junk comprising of local storage locations, cached binaries, configuration, diagnostics information and cached compiled web site content files over its lifetime. They are typically stored at C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\dftmp. The Azure Tools will periodically clean this up, but some time you have to play janitor and take the law in your hands ;). The csrun.exe has quite a few tricks up its sleeve. One of them is the ability to clean the development fabric's temporary junk accumulated over time. You can do this by  running the Azure command prompt with elevated privileges and running csrun.exe /devfabric:shutdown and then csrun.exe /devfabric:clean If the problem still persists then the application directory structure could indeed be too long. A workaround to this is changing the Development Fabric temporary directory to point to a shorter path. The temporary directory path can be addressed by an environment variable _CSRUN_STATE_DIRECTORY. You can try setting its value to something like "C:\WA" or "C:\A" this will reduce some 25+ characters from your path. Do not forget to close Visual Studio and expressly shutdown the dev fab with csrun.exe /devfabric:shutdown (Under elevated privileges of course). This is what I get from clicking on SHOW MORE DETAILS: "Error removing file: Read-only file system" This is what I've tried so far: delete from the downloads directory from my user. deleting permanently, but it does not work.   I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, I am very new to the Ubuntu OS and I would need help with it. I am trying to install this open source platform called Play Framework, to install it I need to add the installation directory to my system path, the documentation for Play says that I should open a terminal and type export PATH=$PATH:/to/path/play. I have tried this it did not work. I also tried sudo apt-get install play and that did not work either. I am completely lost now, I need help urgently because it is for work. Best Martha

  Issue:You changed the windows path and made a mistake and now want to reset it.Solution:In short, you can't. If you restore to the system default, you will loose any paths that were appended when you or the manufacturer installed software and drivers.   An application is running on a windows XP prof machine picking up file from a network share from another windows machine. It detects that the file has been updated (by date and time or optionally file size) and reads it for any new data. Most of the time the last write time and file size, seems to be up to date. Occasionally, this information stops being updated, even though the file is growing (intermittently during the day) with appended content, so that the last write time and file size remain fixed at some arbitrary moment. This is visible in explorer, where it shows a fixed last write time on the reading machine. Just opening the file to edit it in notepad, immediately refreshes the file properties, and the other application picks up where it left of. The file location can't be changed, nor the location of the relevant applications. Any solutions to resolve this problem?

• Setting TeX Live path for root

  I have installed TeX Live 2011 vanilla and I have trouble setting the TeX Live path for root (in Ubuntu 11.10). The problem is that when I run sudo tlmgr I get: sudo: tlmgr: command not found To fix the path for non-root it was sufficient to add PATH=/usr/local/texlive/2011/bin/x86_64-linux:$PATH to /etc/profile. I have tried adding this same line to /root/.bashrc and I have also tried to add it to /etc/profile.d/zzz-texlive.sh like Herbert suggest in http://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/26624/tlmgr-inaccessible/26626#26626 but it does not help.

• Finding the shortest path through a digraph that visits all nodes

  I am trying to find the shortest possible path that visits every node through a graph (a node may be visited more than once, the solution may pick any node as the starting node.). The graph is directed, meaning that being able to travel from node A to node B does not mean one can travel from node B to node A. All distances between nodes are equal. I was able to code a brute force search that found a path of only 27 nodes when I had 27 nodes and each node had a connection to 2 or 1 other node. However, the actual problem that I am trying to solve consists of 256 nodes, with each node connecting to either 4 or 3 other nodes. The brute force algorithm that solved the 27 node graph can produce a 415 node solution (not optimal) within a few seconds, but using the processing power I have at my disposal takes about 6 hours to arrive at a 402 node solution. What approach should I use to arrive at a solution that I can be certain is the optimal one? For example, use an optimizer algorithm to shorten a non-optimal solution? Or somehow adopt a brute force search that discards paths that are not optimal? EDIT: (Copying a comment to an answer here to better clarify the question) To clarify, I am not saying that there is a Hamiltonian path and I need to find it, I am trying to find the shortest path in the 256 node graph that visits each node AT LEAST once. With the 27 node run, I was able to find a Hamiltonian path, which assured me that it was an optimal solution. I want to find a solution for the 256 node graph which is the shortest.

• Creating movement path displays in a top-down 2d RTS

  My game is a top-down 2d RTS coded in C# using SFML's libraries. I want that during unit selection, a unit will display it's movement path on the map. Currently, after the path is computed as a list of directions ({left, up,down, down, down, left}, as an example), it's sent to the graphical component to create it's UI equivalent, and here I'm having some problems. current, these I've checked three ways to do it: compute the size of the image (in the example above it'll be a 3*2 rectangle) and create an invisible rectangle, and then go over the directions list and mark each spot with a visible point, so as to get a continous line. This system is slightly problematic because of the amount of large images that I need to save, but mostly because I have a lot of fine detail onscreen, and a continous line obstructs the view. again, compute the size of the image, but now create several (let's say 4) invisible images of that size, and then instead of a single continous line I'll switch between the four images, in each will appear only a fourth of the spots, in a way which creates a path animation. This is nicer on the eye, but here the memory demands, and the amount of time needed to compute each such image-loop is significant. Just create a list of single markers, each on a different spot on the path. This is very quick & easy on memory, but too sparse. Is there a simple or resource-light system to create path-animations?

• In Eclipse, how to open a file browser in the directory of the currently edited file

  Hi, I know it's possible in eclipse to open file browsers from your project's resource browser, but is it possible for files that aren't part of your project ? Typically external includes are not found in your resource browser... If there is the equivalent of $(resource_loc) for the editor, it would work.. But I wasn't able to find it. Can anyone help me on this ? thanks! JC EDIT : I Found StartExplorer, but it's a joke of a plug-in. It is hardcoded to use WINDOWS explorer or cmd.exe. Also, it still requires you to use the resource browser. Other than that it can open paths selected in the editor, but they must be full paths.

• Photoshop CS6 Corrupted File recovery

  Last night I was working on a client application mock-up in photoshop, but was goin to take a break from my work so I saved the .PSD file on my internal HDD and put my computer into stand-by mode once the file had finished saving. Unfortunately my computer crashed while it was entering stand-by and shut itself down (photoshop was still open). I did not boot it again to make sure all my files were ok because they had already been saved, but today once I opened up the file again it was extremely corrupted and also completely un-editable (screenshot bellow). so what im asking is there any way to recover my work, or at least some of it? i have put in a good few days work on this project and would hate to have to restart it. the size of the file is 3070 KB, even though it reads as 712 KB in photoshop. i dont know if these file sizes are larger or either smaller than the original non-corrupted file's size, but considering all the layers in the file i suspect it was larger before it corrupted. im using windows XP professional 32bit SP3. both my OS and said .PSD file are located on the same internal HDD (74.4 GB). i do have an external HDD (1.5 TB) but i primarily only use it for movies music and tv shows. i dont know if it was plugged in t the time of me editing the document last, though, if it means anything. i have tried many image and PSd recovery softwares but none have returned any results that may help recover my work. edit: i tried using a photo reccovery software (odboso Photorecovery) that actually seems to recover the corrupted file in question judging by the size of the file, but i cannot recover it because of the licence fee. knowing that the file is still likely on my HDD, what location might it be located?

• Copying windows 8 Users folder having long long paths

  I was trying to move my "Users" folder in Windows 8 as described here and here. But when I try to copy the folder using "xcopy" in Windows Installation Disk Repair Mode, after some files are copied, I get "insufficient memory". The files on which the error is given are like C:\Users\Bilal\Application Data\Application Data\Application Data.........Application Data\Application Data..... What is the point in such directories within directories? I also tried copying them using Mini Windows XP, but the problem was there too.. Also tried copying using Parted Magic Live CD... but still.. So now, how can I move them? Another Question. Is moving such/ system files using Linux a good idea? Does it do anything to permissions?

• Count the Number of Characters in a Full FIle Path?

  I need to be able to count the number of characters in a full path to a file in windows. How I am currently accomplishing this task is as follows: Open a command prompt cd to the directory in question (for example c:\CruiseControl\ProjectArtifacts\ProjectName) type the following command dir /s /b output.csv Open the resulting output.csv file in excel. use the =LEN() function in excel to count the number of characters per row as listed in the output.csv file. Does anyone know of an explorer shell extension, or some 3rd party tool that could preform this function without me having to manipulate the output from dir in excel? Is there some easier way to go about doing this? The root of the issue I am having is the ~260 character file path limit in Windows. I am trying to analyze which paths are approx ~260 characters so I can shorten them to avoid getting this error.

• Problem opening SFX archive file(.exe) using the archive manager

  I have installed both rar and unrar using apt-install but I am still not able to use archive manager for opening the archive file.. I have also tried installing p7zip(p7zip-full and p7zip) but no improvements... However, when I use command-line for extracting the files from the archive using unrar or rar the command executes successfully... Is there any other open source software I should install for viewing the contents of the SFX archive or what else should I install to view the same in the archive manager.. Thanks in advance...

On some configurations, IO.File.SetLastWriteTimeUtc triggers an UnauthorizedAccess error, although the IO.File.Copy instruction worked very well. I'm totally puzzled: I've checked, and file attributes are set to 128 (ie. Normal) successfully. The problem seems to be with the very SetLastWriteTimeUtc. But what is it? Any ideas? Thanks a lot!

  I've got group movement implemented pretty much like this: http://www.red3d.com/cwr/steer/CrowdPath.html Basically, that's combining path following and separation. It works nicely as long as units are in transit, but arrival does not work very well at all. Right now, units just cease to use the path following component once the "exit" the path, i.e. when their closest point on the path is on or past the end. This leads to those units bumping into each other and also overshooting the point the player clicked. Ideally, I'd have the units arrive scattered around the finish point (and reasonable close to each other), not all clumped up past the finish line. I'd imagine that some kind of arrival steering might work here, but based on other units and a "fuzzy" classification of the end of the path. Is there any proven way to do this?

Basically it should be a "file forum" in the sense that users can register and be approved to post files to categories. Users with "read" privileges can then go through the categories and download files. Basically I sort of want a FTP-like system, but it should be as easy to manage users, categories, etc as that of a forum system like vB or phpBB. If it could have a forum look and feel that would also be great, but I don't want any discussions taking place.

• C# double-quoted path name being escaped when read from file

  I am trying to read in a text input file that contains a list of filenames (one per line). However, I am running into an issue if the user double-quotes the path (because it has a space in it). For example, a normal input file might have: C:\test\test.tiff C:\test\anothertest.tiff C:\test\lasttest.tiff These get read in fine by my code ("C:\\test\\test.tiff" etc) However, if I have the following input file: "C:\test with spaces\test.tiff" "C:\test with spaces\anothertest.tiff" "C:\test with spaces\lasttest.tiff" These get read in double-quotes and all ("\"C:\\test with spaces\\test.tiff\"" etc). This becomes a problem when I try to open the files (I understandably get invalid character exceptions). My question is, how do I fix this? I want to allow users to input quoted strings and handle them correctly. My first impression was to just write a little method that strips off beginning or ending quotes, but I thought there might be a better way.

  Hi- I would like to write a function copy(File f1, File f2) f1 is always a file. f2 is either a file or a directory. If f2 is a directory I would like to copy f1 to this directory (the file name should stay the same). If f2 is a file I would like to copy the contents of f1 to the end of the file f2. So for example if F2 has the contents: 2222222222222 And F1 has the contents 1111111111111 And I do copy(f1,f2) then f2 should become 2222222222222 1111111111111 Thanks!

  12.04 LTS, on a dell mini 10. Install stable until about a week ago. Updated about 1x a week, sometimes more often. Several days ago, I booted up and the system was no longer working correctly. All these symptoms occurred simultaneously: Cannot run (exit on opening, every time): Update manager, software center, ubuntuOne, libreOffice.
