  • Microsoft Entourage/Exchange Server problem: all objects disappeared from server - still in some form on the client

    One of our employees works with Entourage on his MacBook Pro (OSX 10.6) accessing Exchange Server 2007. Last Friday morning, I think while working over a VPN, Entourage (I think it was Entourage) deleted all his objects (mail, calendar, contacts) on the server and while creating a lot of strange folders (starting with underscores) on the client. The local data seems to be there, but not in a consistent form. Since the user's mailbox is rather big, I suspect, that there was some kind of "move" operation which did not complete. I tried to export the data, but the export stops because of a corrupted object. Is there a tool or another way to export or retrieve the local data? Edit - FYI: we solved the problem getting his data from the previous night's backup.

  • Fixing corrupt AVG vault? All files in USB drive are locked out.

    I was doing a virus scan on an external USB drive and while AVG was scanning my system got locked up and required a reboot. Since that time all data on the external drive is no longer accessible. I can see all the files in the root and directorys but I cannot browse into any of them as Windows 7 gives an error stating they are corrupt. If I show hidden files there is a hidden AVG directory that I know was not there to begin with and I am assuming it is some type of vault to protect files while being scanned. Well not the entire drives contents are unaccessible because I think whatever does the managing of the scan failed during the roobt and left the headers or something in a corrupt state. Does anyone know how to 'unlock' or recover this data? Luckily I can recover this data from other sources as a last resort but I would like to fix this if possible. Any help would be appreciated.   • Why Both 8GB USB Flash Drives Have Different Integrities?

    USB 3.0 SuperTalent Express DUO 8GB recently had its partition corrupted and declared itself "write-protected" and I was told in chat by @sidran32 that this usually means that flash drive gone bad due to writing cycles limit being reached. Having this thumbdrive for over a year being used infrequently, I was in doubt and referred to SuperTalent's support. I was given recovery tool which I executed but it failed first time prompting me to reinsert it. After that, I formatted it with Windows 7 integrated format utility since recovery tool offered to do this as well which was successful. The problem as I have noticed is with integrity of SuperTalent: Compare above to SanDisk's Micro Cruzer 8GB: Am I missing something? Both thumbdrives are of 8GB and have same FAT32 file system.

  • Boot loop that I cannot bypass

    Recently, on a laptop that I've used for a while, I had a strange issue where OS files were corrupted (device manager) and Windows 8 was hung after the login screen, so I reinstalled Windows 7 over the existing Windows 8 installation, and it worked for a couple days. Today, when I tried to use my laptop, it was stuck on a boot loop. Right after the BIOS screen, it would show a flashing underscore, then restart the computer, again and again until I removed the battery. I tried booting to a windows 7 install CD, but the same flashing underscore - reboot sequence happened when I tried. I tried moving the boot priority around (HDD first, CD/DVD first, even USB first) but nothing changed. After about an hour of tinkering with it, I listened to the HDD sounds, and it sounded like the HDD was trying to spin up, but failing (whining noise increasing in frequency that stopped and started in sync with the system restarting). I am planning to replace the HDD, but I'm still confused as to why a faulty HDD would stop the laptop from booting to my install DVD (tried it on a different computer, it booted from that CD fine). Anybody here have any idea why this might be happening?

  • Active Desktop cannot be restored on Win XP

    This is more of a major annoyance than anything that's stopping me from doing my work, but I somehow seem to have had Active Desktop on my work XP machine get corrupted and now can't get it back working again. I've tried browsing to C:\Documents and Settings\%my-user-name%\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer and changing, deleting or replacing the Desktop.htt file, but it's not achieving anything. The error I was previously getting when trying to click the "Restore my active desktop" button was: Internet Explorer Script Error An error has occurred in the script on this page.   • How can I force a MySQL table to become corrupted?

    I have written a simple Nagios plugin that calls mysqlcheck (which checks for corrupted tables) and will give a warning if any are corrupt. However none of my tables are corrupt now. So I'm not 100% sure that my plugin is working fine. I have a dev server that's not misson critical. How can I force one (or any) of the tables there to be corrupt so that I can test my nagios alert? For the record the server is Ubuntu Dapper and the mysql is version 5.0

  • Secondary drive corrupted/not reading

    When I connect my Seagate Barracuda to the computer, it shows up on the list of drives in Windows Explorer, but right clicking on it crashes Windows Explorer, opening it won't do anything, and I cannot start disk manager when it is connected. Trying to search the drive also freezes Windows Explorer. I have tried to run CHKDSK on it, and it was "unable to read $J data stream" for the Usn Journal. Also, it was an internal drive, but I pulled it out and hooked it up externally so I could test if it was that drive causing the problems. Is there any way for me to copy the files off of the drive?

While AVG was scanning my system got locked up I think due to the USB drive running out of space and it required a reboot. Since that time all data on the external drive is no longer accessible. I can see all the files in the root and directories but I cannot browse into any of them as Windows 7 gives an error stating they are corrupt. I think the file table or whatever it uses to store the index of what exists on the drive has been corrupted since it still shows the the drive as being almost full but everything I do a properties check on says it is 0 bytes. Does anyone know how to 'unlock' or recover this data? Is there a way to rebuild the file table somehow? Luckily I can recover this data from other sources as a last resort but I would like to fix this if possible. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    I have a dual boot (Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 8) system. Both systems have access to an NTFS "DATA" partition which contains all my images, documents, music and some application data like Chrome and Thunderbird Profiles which used by both OS. Everything was working fine in my Dual boot Ubuntu/Windows 7, but after updating to Windows 8 I am having a lot of troubles. First, sometimes, I add some files from Ubuntu into my DATA partition but they don't show up in Windows. Sometimes, I can't even use the DATA partition from Windows. When I try to save a file it gives an error "The directory or file is corrupted or unreadable". I need to run checkdisk to fix it but after some time, same error appears. Before upgrading to Windows 8 I also installed a new hard drive and copied the old data using clonezilla (full disk clone). Here is the log of my last chkdisk: Chkdsk was executed in read/write mode.   • How to extract corrupted RAR files

    I try to extract a file from set of .RAR parts. I always get the following error: Corrupted so I tried many programs to extract the corrupted RAR files. I have 10 parts, each one 400MB big. The last progam I used was Recovery toolbox for RAR. It gave me the following message: Severity:!High Message:Recovery error for file XXXX with message set file pointer error. The program extracted 2GB of data, but it should extract 4GB. Is there any way to extract the content or am I supposed to download the files again from another server?

  • Junk files appeared in my OSX root folder?

    I see a bunch of junk files in the root folder of my hard drive running Snow Leopard. Here is a screen shot of the files: If I inspect these files, they appear to contain XML with DeviceCertificate, DevicePublicKey, and SystemBUID information, among other XML elements. I do iOS development on this machine. Can anyone explain from where these files came, and if they are an indication of anything serious, such as malware or spyware?

Let us assume we have a folder /var/www/test If I do this in terms of permissions: /bin/chown -R root:root /var/www/test/ /bin/chmod -R u=rwx,go= /var/www/test/ /usr/bin/setfacl -R -m u:apache:rwx /var/www/test/ Will user apache be able to change owner of folder test or of any particular file within that folder? If answer is yes shall I than use group instead of user?

  • Recover from a corrupted couchbase install

    We have a couchbase installation on a Windows 2008 R2 server that got corrupted (this was from before my tenure, now I want to clean it up). There is no add-remove entry in the Programs and Features list. There is no active service in services.msc. However, something still thinks Couchbase is installed. Shy of wiping the box (we aren't quite to "redeploy test environment servers at the push of a button" altho I'm working on it), how can I ensure that all remnants of couchbase installs prior are now gone? I believe the previous install was in the Couchbase 2.x range, but it may have been 1.7+ Running the installer again gives "Installer needs to update registry value in order to upgrade from the previous version. Please run installer again to continue."

    The other day I got a virus on my laptop (Windows XP), but Adaware found it and removed it. Not soon enough though, because it corrupted my rundll32.exe file. Now I can't run almost any application and I have tried to install a couple programs to fix my registry, but I can't even run the install file. What other options do I have besides re-installing my OS?

  • Microsoft Entourage/Exchange Server problem: all objects disappeared from server - still in some for

    One of our employees works with Entourage on his MacBook Pro (OSX 10.6) accessing Exchange Server 2007. Last Friday morning, I think while working over a VPN, Entourage (I think it was Entourage) deleted all his objects (mail, calendar, contacts) on the server and while creating a lot of strange folders (starting with underscores) on the client. The local data seems to be there, but not in a consistent form. Since the user's mailbox is rather big, I suspect, that there was some kind of "move" operation which did not complete. I tried to export the data, but the export stops because of a corrupted object. Is there a tool or another way to export or retrieve the local data? Edit - FYI: we solved the problem getting his data from the previous night's backup.

  • Getting error 0x000003eb when installing DDK sample printer drivers

    I've got a development machine, which has been severly abused when it comes to installing and removing printer drivers. I'm now at the stage where I want to install some sample printer drivers from the DDK (WDK), but unfortunately I get the message 'Unable to install printer. Operation could not be completed (error 0x000003eb). So I tried installing the same printer driver built from the DDK in a clean Win 7 x64 VM, and it works, so the only thing I can imagine is that the driver store or driver folder may be slightly corrupt from the many previous printer drivers I had installed. So my question is, is there anyway I can clean my system of old printer drivers / file? Or any repair functionality in windows that may replace the common windows printer drivers?

  • Why do most songs in my media collection play twice? - Corrupt media?

    Problem: Whether I'm playing the media with Rhythmbox on Ubuntu, Winamp on Windows, or my Nokia N95's media player, most of my audio files (OK, maybe only 40%) play twice. Info: I have a 500GB external 2.5" WD HDD, with a 150GB primary FAT32 partition labeled MUSIC. Inside this, I have about 500 folders containing about 10,000 MP3/WMA/M4A/WAV files. I manage the drive using Ubuntu 9.10, and frequently copy data to/from it using RSYNC, or on windows, TotalCopy. The visual output is different in each media player, but it behaves as if the 1 MP3 has the same song on it twice, and as soon as it ends it begins again. Winamp shows that the song goes for 2x as long as it should, The N95's media player shows the progress bar off the right-hand-side of the screen when it begins playing (then jumps back to the left, then continues along...). Rhythmbox doesn't show me how long the song is, nor does the progress bar move along the screen. Plea: It seams to me somewhere along the lines my collection has become corrupt... but where? And how? and please someone tell me I can fix it!! TIA, Dean.

  • Cannot access files after trying to upgrade Ubuntu

    I tried to upgrade Ubuntu from 11.10 to 12.04. I left it for 24 hours but the upgrade did not complete. Hence I cancelled the upgrade. I thought I will copy all the files that I have to a DVD/CD and try try downloading a copy of Ubuntu. But now, I cannot open any file or copy them. I cannot even shutdown my laptop. I have many important files on my laptop. Can someone help me retrieve my files from my laptop? Regards Ola

  • Moving case sensitive Linux files via Windows

    Hi the company I work for is currently trying to move a Magento installation from one server to another - however, the product images are saved in folders alphabetically indexed folders - but with an added twist, some of the letters are the same but have a different case - i.e. a, A, b, C, D, e, E, f, F, G, h, I That being the case, when we try to drag those files down from FTP in order to move them, Windows does not honour the case sensitive distinction and we are losing several image folders. Is there a simple workaround for this issue? Any help is greatly appreciated. regards SWK

  • Losing windows XP files. How to retrieve them?

    I have a portable 500 GB HDD.Since last few days, all files of some folder are getting kinda corrupted.I can't access/delete them. Here is the example. If I try to access these files/folders, I get following error. This thing is kinda spreading in my HDD.Till now it has affected two folders worth 70 GB.In which one folder is backup folder where all my important data resides.So I am really in loss if I loose this data.
