  • NHibernate: What are child sessions and why and when should I use them?

    In the comments for the ayende's blog about the auditing in NHibernate there is a mention about the need to use a child session:session.GetSession(EntityMode.Poco). As far as I understand it, it has something to do with the order of the SQL operation which session.Flush will emit. (For example: If I wanted to perform some delete operation in the pre-insert event but the session was already done with deleting operations, I would need some way to inject them in.) However I did not find documentation about this feature and behavior. Questions: Is my understanding of child sessions correct? How and in which scenarios should I use them? Are they documented somewhere? Could they be used for session "scoping"? (For example: I open the master session which will hold some data and then I create 2 child-sessions from the master one. I'd expect that the two child-scopes will be separated but the will share objects from the master session cache. Is this the case?) Are they first class citizens in NHibernate or are they just hack to support some edge-case scenarios? Thanks in advance for any info.

    Is there any advertising company that allow webmasters to decide on general ad topics (such as "Entertainment", "Autos and vehicles", "Arts", etc.) to be displayed for a user visiting on a website? I know you can choose specific ad campaigns to show to users, or let the advertising company decide for you which ads to show. But I am looking for an option to ask for the advertsing company to show me ads based on categories/topics. Thanks. Frank

The data stream should be accessible across sessions (according to access control list). How can I do this in Django?   • Can't get a List(Of <my class>) from a Dictionary in .NET?

    I have a Dictionary with key of type UInteger and the value is List(Of Session) where the (Public) class Session contains a couple of variables and a constructor (Public Sub New(...)). Some of the variables in my Session class is: Private count As Integer Private StartDate As Date Private Values As List(Of Integer) and a couple of methods like: Friend Sub Counter(ByVal c as Integer) count += c End Sub There is no problem to add values to the Dictionary: Dim Sessions As New List(Of Session) Dim dict As New Dictionary(Of Integer, Sessions) then some code to fill up a couple of Session objects in Sessions (not shown here) and then: dict.Add(17, Sessions) 'No problem Sessions.Clear() Sessions = dict(17) 'This doesn't return anything! The Sessions object is empty even if the code doesn't returned any error. Is my class Session to compex to be stored in a Dictionary?

    Catching up on a couple of sessions I did in the past. This article gives an overview of some of my activities. Mainly at the annual German Visual FoxPro Developer Conference also known as SQL-Server & ASP.NET Conference in Frankfurt. The below listed entries are excerpts from the original Conference Coverage documents you'll find on UniversalThread. German Visual FoxPro Developer Conference 2002 (1 session - Vendor session about Active FoxPro Pages 3.0) German Visual FoxPro Developer Conference 2003 (2.5 sessions - Visual FoxPro running on Linux) German Visual FoxPro Developer Conference 2004 (4 sessions - 2x Active FoxPro Pages, VFP on Linux, and VFP using additional databases) German Visual FoxPro Developer Conference 2005 (4 sessions - RegEx, XML, XSLT, and using free (as in beer) development tools) German Visual FoxPro Developer Conference 2006 (3 sessions - .NET interop via COM, writing own CLR host in VFP, and Active FoxPro Pages) Furthermore, I did a couple of (hopefully) interesting sessions at various user group meetings in Speyer and Stuttgart.   • 24 Hours of PASS scheduling

    I have a new appreciation for Tom LaRock (@sqlrockstar), who is doing a tremendous job leading the organising committee for the 24 Hours of PASS event (Twitter: #24hop). We’ve just been going through the list of speakers and their preferences for time slots, and hopefully we’ve kept everyone fairly happy. All the submitted sessions (59 of them) were put up for a vote, and over a thousand of you picking your favourites. The top 28 sessions as voted were all included (24 sessions plus 4 reserves), and duplicates (when a single presenter had two sessions in the top 28) were swapped out for others. For example, both sessions submitted by Cindy Gross were in the top 28. These swaps were chosen by the committee to get a good balance of topics. Amazingly, some big names missed out, and even the top ten included some surprises. T-SQL, Indexes and Reporting featured well in the top ten, and in the end, the mix between BI, Dev and DBA ended up quite nicely too.   • Good way to capture/replay sessions from Apache Log?

    For performance testing, I would like to capture some traffic from a production server and use that as a basis to replay the request to a test server in order to simulate a realistic load in our development environment. These are all stateless queries, so no issues regarding cookies, sessions, etc. The Apache log timestamps everything down to a 1 second resolution, but that's not fine enough granularity for our peak times. What's the best way to capture more fine-grained timestamps for replay? And is there some ab-like load generating program that can use this data to replicate load?

    My company took some old php application over. Due to our preference to ASP.net and to the lack of any documentation from the previous developer, we do not want to spend much resources on developing in PHP. For implementing new features, we will create an Asp.net application that has the same look to the user. We want to develop a kind of 'coexisting' web application. Therefore we must share sessions between an PHP and an Asp.net webapplication project, because there is a usermanagement involved with an existing MySQL database. (e.g. link 'A' directs to the PHP website, and link 'B' directs to the asp.net application) How can we share the session between and PHP and an asp.net application? And does anyone have a hint for this 'coexisting' thing, that might be useful in development? Edit: IIS 6 would be our targeted server, altough IIS 7.5 would also be an option

  • Twitter and Facebook on iPhone - save sessions across app launches?

    Hi I am using OAuth for twitter and fb-connect for facebook authentication in my iPhone app. Is it possible to save the user sessions across app launches? i.e. if the user logs in once, the next time they launch the app, we log them in automatically from some state saved the last time the app closed? For Twitter would it work if I just save the auth_token and use it every time the user wants to use twitter from my app? Or do I need to do anything else? I could not get it to work like that so wondering if I was doing something wrong. Thanks.

  • Context aware breadcrumbs with php sessions - Will search engines index each variation?

    Some pages on my website appear differently depending on where the user has been, using php sessions. for example with breadcrumbs: standard crumb setup: All Books - fiction - Lord Of the Flies if the visitor has just been on the 'William Golding Page', a session will have been created to say, this visitor is broswing by author, so i would check if( $_SESSION['browsing by] == 'author' ): and the breadcrumbs (for the exact same page as before) would now be: Authors - William Golding - Lord Of the Flies to summarise: So 1 page exists for each book, but depending where the user has come from, the page will show different breadcrumbs. the questions: Can search engines create my 'browsing by' SESSION? Would they index the same page multiple times (for each variation)?

  • ASP.NET Session StateServer - is it possible to extract info about current sessions?

    I'm looking into changing the ASP.NET session state mode of our application from SQLServer to StateServer (for performance reasons). In SQLServer mode, it is easy to extract information about the current sessions by querying SQL Server tables like ASPStateTempSessions. e.g. things like when each session was created, when it is due to expire, etc. You could even query the session state blob data to extract further application specific info (e.g. like the UserID, if it was saved in session state). This info was useful for administrators. Just wondering if anyone has managed to do something similar for StateServer mode.

  • TechEd 2012: Recap

    TechEd this week was a great experience and I wanted to wrap it up with a summary post. First let me say a thank you to John and Jeff from GWB for supplying power, connectivity and a place to work in between sessions.  The blogging hub was a great experience in itself.  Getting to talk with other bloggers and other conference goers turned into a series of interesting conversations.  And where else can you almost end up in the day 1 highlights video? The sessions at TechEd were a mixed bag of value.  The Keynotes rocked, both figuratively and literally and most of the sessions that I want to were a good experience and had gems of information to take away.  There were a few exceptions though.  A couple of the sessions turned out to be sales jobs.  Nothing turns me off more than that (there will be some really honest comments on those surveys). TechEd re-enforced for me that much of the value is not in the sessions, but in the networking opportunities. I got to talk with several Microsoft team members and MVPs as well as some of the vendor representative for companies like Inrule and ComponentOne. Also got to expand both my local and extended community with discussions at meal times and waiting for sessions to start. I think this is one of the benefits that a lot of people don’t take advantage of in these conferences that should be a bigger part of the advertising. Exposure to a wide variety of topics, many of which I had not been able to make time for up to this point was envigorating.  The list of topic includes: Office 365, Windows Server 2012, Windows 8, Metro, Azure.  I can’t wait to get back to work and dig into these subjects in more depth. The one complaint that I had and heard from other attendees was that there weren’t enough sessions that were actually about development.  I realize that TechEd started as an event for IT Pros, but there needs to be more value for the Devs.  It all went by too fast and it will take a couple more days to digest the material, but the batteries are and I’m ready to leverage what I’ve learned.  Hopefully we will do it again next year. del.icio.us Tags: TechEd,TechEd 2012

Do I talk about the great presentations from our partners and executives in our keynote sessions; do I write about the music festival, or many great sessions we had in the Data integration track? A short blog can never do justice. For now I will stick to our data integration sessions for those who could not attend with so many other sessions running concurrently. And in the coming weeks we will be writing more about what we talked in our sessions and what we learned from our customers and partners. For today, I will give some of the key highlights from Data Integration sessions that took place on Wednesday and Thursday of last week  On Wednesday, GoldenGate was highlighted in multiple Database and Data Integration sessions. I found particularly the session about Oracle’s own use of GoldenGate for its large E-Business Suite implementation for supply chain management and service contract management very interesting. In 2011, Oracle implemented a new operational reporting system using GoldenGate real-time data replication to an operational data store that leverages data from E-Business Suite.The results are very impressive. Data freshness improved by 2,210X while report run performance improved by 60X. For more information on this implementation and its results please see the white paper: Real-Time Operational Reporting for E-Business Suite via GoldenGate Replication to an Operational Data Store Other sessions that provided very rich content were: "Best Practices for Conflict Detection and Resolution in Oracle GoldenGate for Active/Active", "Tuning and Troubleshooting Oracle GoldenGate on Oracle Database", "Next-Generation Data Integration on Oracle Exadata" and "Accelerate Oracle Data Integrator with Advanced Features, SOA, Groovy, SDK, and XML".
