  • After installing Ubuntu how do I get rid of unity and go back to gnome?

    - by aseq
After I have installed the newest Ubuntu LTS release (12.04, still in beta though) I am greeted with an unfamiliar and difficult to use desktop environment. I believe it is called unity. However I have used gnome for a decade and a half and I would not like to move to this new and (for me) unusable desktop environment. What is a quick and easy way to remove (most) of unity and bring back gnome, as well as configure my display manager to load gnome by default with the environment as close as possible to the way it was before?

  • Cannot log in to the desktop on ubuntu 11.10?

    - by Jichao
    The problem is, I could log in under the terminal, i could ifup eth0, i could do anything I want in the terminal, but if I use ctrl+alt+f7 goto the gnome login screen, after I input the correct password, the system just send me back to same login screen again. I have created a new user, but it didn't work. I have change all the files under ~/ to jichao:jichao(which is my username) with chown -hR jichao:jichao /home/jichao, but it didn't work too. I searched the internet, somebody said I should see the logs under /var/log/gdm, but there is not a /var/log/gdm directory in my box. Here are the tail of files under /var/log/ tail X.org.log [ 3263.348] (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/input/evdev_drv.so [ 3263.348] (**) Dell Dell USB Keyboard: always reports core events [ 3263.348] (**) Dell Dell USB Keyboard: Device: "/dev/input/event5" [ 3263.348] (--) Dell Dell USB Keyboard: Found keys [ 3263.348] (II) Dell Dell USB Keyboard: Configuring as keyboard [ 3263.348] (**) Option "config_info" "udev:/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.0/usb2/2-1/2-1.4/2-1.4:1.0/input/input29/event5" [ 3263.348] (II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Dell Dell USB Keyboard" (type: KEYBOARD) [ 3263.348] (**) Option "xkb_rules" "evdev" [ 3263.348] (**) Option "xkb_model" "pc105" [ 3263.348] (**) Option "xkb_layout" "us" kern.log Mar 20 09:32:58 jichao-MS-730 kernel: [ 3182.701247] input: Dell Dell USB Keyboard as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.0/usb2/2-1/2-1.4/2-1.4:1.0/input/input27 Mar 20 09:32:58 jichao-MS-730 kernel: [ 3182.701392] generic-usb 0003:413C:2003.0018: input,hidraw1: USB HID v1.10 Keyboard [Dell Dell USB Keyboard] on usb-0000:00:1d.0-1.4/input0 Mar 20 09:33:02 jichao-MS-730 kernel: [ 3186.642572] usb 2-1.3: new low speed USB device number 17 using ehci_hcd Mar 20 09:33:02 jichao-MS-730 kernel: [ 3186.741892] input: Microsoft Microsoft 5-Button Mouse with IntelliEye(TM) as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.0/usb2/2-1/2-1.3/2-1.3:1.0/input/input28 Mar 20 09:33:02 jichao-MS-730 kernel: [ 3186.742080] generic-usb 0003:045E:0047.0019: input,hidraw2: USB HID v1.10 Mouse [Microsoft Microsoft 5-Button Mouse with IntelliEye(TM)] on usb-0000:00:1d.0-1.3/input0 Mar 20 09:33:27 jichao-MS-730 kernel: [ 3212.473901] usb 2-1.3: USB disconnect, device number 17 Mar 20 09:33:28 jichao-MS-730 kernel: [ 3212.702031] usb 2-1.4: USB disconnect, device number 16 Mar 20 09:34:08 jichao-MS-730 kernel: [ 3253.022655] usb 2-1.4: new low speed USB device number 18 using ehci_hcd Mar 20 09:34:08 jichao-MS-730 kernel: [ 3253.124278] input: Dell Dell USB Keyboard as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.0/usb2/2-1/2-1.4/2-1.4:1.0/input/input29 Mar 20 09:34:08 jichao-MS-730 kernel: [ 3253.124423] generic-usb 0003:413C:2003.001A: input,hidraw1: USB HID v1.10 Keyboard [Dell Dell USB Keyboard] on usb-0000:00:1d.0-1.4/input0 Mar 20 09:33:02 jichao-MS-730 kernel: [ 3186.741892] input: Microsoft Microsoft 5-Button Mouse with IntelliEye(TM) as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.0/usb2/2-1/2-1.3/2-1.3:1.0/input/input28 Mar 20 09:33:02 jichao-MS-730 kernel: [ 3186.742080] generic-usb 0003:045E:0047.0019: input,hidraw2: USB HID v1.10 Mouse [Microsoft Microsoft 5-Button Mouse with IntelliEye(TM)] on usb-0000:00:1d.0-1.3/input0 syslog Mar 20 09:33:02 jichao-MS-730 mtp-probe: bus: 2, device: 17 was not an MTP device Mar 20 09:33:27 jichao-MS-730 kernel: [ 3212.473901] usb 2-1.3: USB disconnect, device number 17 Mar 20 09:33:28 jichao-MS-730 kernel: [ 3212.702031] usb 2-1.4: USB disconnect, device number 16 Mar 20 09:34:08 jichao-MS-730 kernel: [ 3253.022655] usb 2-1.4: new low speed USB device number 18 using ehci_hcd Mar 20 09:34:08 jichao-MS-730 mtp-probe: checking bus 2, device 18: "/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.0/usb2/2-1/2-1.4" Mar 20 09:34:08 jichao-MS-730 mtp-probe: bus: 2, device: 18 was not an MTP device Mar 20 09:34:08 jichao-MS-730 kernel: [ 3253.124278] input: Dell Dell USB Keyboard as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.0/usb2/2-1/2-1.4/2-1.4:1.0/input/input29 Mar 20 09:34:08 jichao-MS-730 kernel: [ 3253.124423] generic-usb 0003:413C:2003.001A: input,hidraw1: USB HID v1.10 Keyboard [Dell Dell USB Keyboard] on usb-0000:00:1d.0-1.4/input0 auth.log Mar 20 09:18:52 jichao-MS-730 lightdm: pam_ck_connector(lightdm-autologin:session): nox11 mode, ignoring PAM_TTY :0 Mar 20 09:18:53 jichao-MS-730 lightdm: pam_succeed_if(lightdm:auth): requirement "user ingroup nopasswdlogin" not met by user "jichao" Mar 20 09:18:53 jichao-MS-730 dbus[835]: [system] Rejected send message, 2 matched rules; • Can't validate mine, sudo nor root in Debian "Jessie" Gnome anymore?

    - by Janar
I'm Debian beginner & GUI guy in a bit of trouble? Can't login as sudo/gksu/root/su nor as (main/super)user after removed user password via Gnome-user-settings. History of actions (Probably irrelevant though) Installed Debian "Jessie" GNU/Linux with xFce GUI (en-US) as only OS. HardWare is ThinkPad w510. Skipped root user password in setup, to get sudo for superuser easily. Logged in (as always had) with Gnome (3.4.x), not once with xFCE. (installed Xfce. Installed xFce only to achieve more control (easier management) over packages this way, to set-up gnome much more by mine likes. Added more jessie repros (same ones as in Wheesy stable by default but for Jessie as, Jessie only had repros for security updates by default). Installed lots of gtk(3) & gnome(3) based soft; (- restarted again after this) Installed propietary graphics card driver for mine nvidia quadro. (- restarted once again after that one) Installed more stuff related to mine work/school/devel. The actual problem Had a plan to restart again, but wanted to set up auto-login first, instead set user password to none (don't ask why / perhaps caused by being awake for a looooong time), noticed it, and set also to auto-login, but couldn't undo mine previous mistake to create new password for me. As mine password is set to none I would have expected that simply return in pass prompt for emty password field would do, but it won't authenticate. I tried Alt+F2 "gksu gedit" as well as: sudo wget "https://www.some-page.eu/file.ext" and "su" in terminals, none has applied (quite logical actually - as I'm sudoer and highest ranked super user, besides only user in computer). Current stand Everything worked & still works nice after this accident, besides this password prompts part. To spoked to log-out nor restart. Synaptic package-manager is still open with root rights (only one, that has left open prior to the issue and not closed since, just in case). Goggled for help and read some manuals/faqs/how-tos - mostly lead to sudoers file management, but not found one specifically for mine issue - so still not any smarter. Really hope, that I don't have to redo OS inst all over again, by just one stupid mistake. Thanks for your reply :-)

  • How do I remove partitions in the 'Places' section of the Gnome file dialog?

    - by Grumbel
In the Gnome file dialog under 'Places' I can add and edit bookmarks to directories. That list however not only contains my bookmarks, but also a list of all partitions on the system that Gnome seems to gather automatically. I can't edit that list as the right-click-menu items for that are greyed out. How can I get rid of those automatically generated entries or limit it to just my bookmarks?

  • Customize the Default Screensavers in Windows 7 and Vista

    - by Matthew Guay
Windows 7 and Vista include a nice set of backgrounds, but unfortunately most of them aren’t configurable by default.  Thanks to a free app and some registry changes, however, you can make the default screensavers uniquely yours! Customize the default screensavers If you’ve ever pressed the Customize button on most of the default screensavers in Windows 7 and Vista, you were probably greeted with this message: A little digging in the registry shows that this isn’t fully correct.  The default screensavers in Vista and 7 do have options you can set, but they’re not obvious.  With the help of an app or some registry tips, you can easily customize the screensavers to be uniquely yours.  Here’s how you can do it with an app or in the registry. Customize Windows Screensavers with System Screensavers Tweaker Download the System Screensavers Tweaker (link below), and unzip the folder.  Run nt6srccfg.exe in the folder to tweak your screensavers.  This application lets you tweak the screensavers’ registry settings graphically, and it works great in all editions of Windows Vista and 7, including x64 versions. Change any of the settings you want in the screensaver tweaker, and click Apply. To preview the changes to your screensaver, open the Screen Saver settings window as normal by right-clicking on the desktop, and selecting Personalize. Click on the Screensaver button on the bottom right. Now, select your modified screensaver, and click Preview to see your changes. You can change a wide variety of settings for the Bubbles, Ribbons, and Mystify screensavers in Windows 7 and Vista, as well as the Aurora screensaver in Windows Vista.  The tweaks to the Bubbles screensaver are especially nice.  Here’s how the Bubbles look without transparency. And, by tweaking a little more, you get a screensaver that looks more like a screen full of marbles. Ribbons and Mystify each have less settings, but still can produce some unique effects.   How’s that for a brilliant screensaver? And, if you want to return your screensavers to their default settings, simply run the System Screensavers Tweaker and select Reset to defaults on any screensaver you wish to reset. Customize Windows Screensavers in the Registry If you prefer to roll up your sleeves and tweak Windows under-the-hood, then here’s how you can customize the screensavers yourself in the Registry.  Type regedit into the search box in the Start menu, browse to the key for each screensaver, and add or modify the DWORD values listed for that screensaver using the Decimal base. Please Note: Tweaking the Registry can be difficult, so if you’re unsure, just use the tweaking application above. Also, you’ll probably want to create a System Restore Point.   Bubbles To edit the Bubbles screensaver, browse to the following in regedit: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Screensavers\Bubbles Now, add or modify the following DWORD values to tweak the screensaver: MaterialGlass – enter 0 for solid or 1 for transparent bubbles Radius – enter a number between 1090000000 and 1130000000; the larger the number, the larger the bubbles’ radius ShowBubbles – enter 0 to show a black background or 1 to show the current desktop behind the bubbles ShowShadows – enter 0 for no shadow or 1 for shadows behind the bubbles SphereDensity – enter a number from 1000000000 to 2100000000; the higher the number, the more bubbles on the screen. TurbulenceNumOctaves – enter a number from 1 to 255; the higher the number, the faster the bubble colors will change. Ribbons To edit the Ribbons screensaver, browse to the following in regedit: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Screensavers\Ribbons Now, add or modify the following DWORD values to tweak the screensaver: Blur – enter 0 to prevent ribbons from fading, or 1 to have them fade away after a few moments. Numribbons – enter a number from 1 to 100; the higher the number, the more ribbons on the screen. RibbonWidth – enter a number from 1000000000 to 1080000000; the higher the number, the thicker the ribbons. Mystify To edit the Mystify screensaver, browse to the following in regedit: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Screensavers\Mystify Now, add or modify the following DWORD values to tweak the screensaver: Blur – enter 0 to prevent lines from fading, or 1 to have them fade away after a few moments. LineWidth – enter a number from 1000000000 to 1080000000; the higher the number, the wider the lines. NumLines – enter a number from 1 to 100; the higher the value, the more lines on the screen. Aurora – Windows Vista only To edit the Aurora screensaver in Windows Vista, browse to the following in regedit: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Screensavers\Aurora Now, add or modify the following DWORD values to tweak the screensaver: Amplitude – enter a value from 500000000 to 2000000000; the higher the value, the slower the motion. Brightness – enter a value from 1000000000 to 1050000000; the higher the value, the brighter the affect. NumLayers – enter a value from 1 to 15; the higher the value, the more aurora layers displayed. Speed – enter a value from 1000000000 to 2100000000; the higher the value, the faster the cycling. Conclusion Although the default screensavers are nice, they can be boring after awhile with their default settings.  But with these tweaks, you can create a variety of vibrant screensavers that should keep your desktop fresh and interesting. • Tool to create UI for Linux (Gnome) shell scripts

    - by stwissel
I'm writing a bunch of Linux shell scripts with complex selections. For now I use zenity for prompts. I'd rather use something where I can show more than one UI element at a time and query it in a script (e.g. a list and some checkboxed and a file picker and an entry field. What are my options?

  • How do I prevent JDialog from showing in gnome-panel(Linux)?

    - by aeter
I have a class: public class ANote extends JDialog{...} In GNOME(Linux) it shows an entry in the gnome-panel. I want it to show nothing (the same way it does in the taskbar in Windows), because there may be present several instances of the class simultaneously, and this overcrowds the gnome-panel. How do I prevent it from showing an instance in the gnome-panel? EDIT: So far I have tried playing with the modality, which hides it from the gnome-panel, but blocks the main frame of the application behind the ANote instances.

  • How do you parse the XDG/gnome/kde menu/desktop item structure in c++??

    - by Joe Soul-bringer
I would like to parse the menu structure for Gnome Panels (the standard Gnome Desktop application launcher) and it's KDE equivalent using c/c++ function calls. That is, I'd like a list of what the base menu categories and submenu are installed in a given machine. I would like to do with using fairly simple c/c++ function calls (with NO shelling out please). I understand that these menus are in the standard xdg format. I understand that this menu structure is stored in xml files such as: /home/user/.config/menus/applications.menu I've look here: http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Specifications/menu-spec?action=show&redirect=Standards%2Fmenu-spec but all they offer is the standard and some shell files to insert item entries (I don't want shell scripts, I don't want installation, I definitely don't want to create a c-library from the XDG specification. I want to find the existing menu structure). I've looked here: http://library.gnome.org/admin/system-admin-guide/stable/menustructure-13.html.en for more notes on these structures. None of this gives me a good idea of how determine the menu structures using a c/c++ program. The actual gnome menu structures seem to be a horrifically hairy things - they don't seem to show the menu structure but to give an XML-coded description of all the changes that the menus have gone through since installation. I assume gnome panels parses these file so there's a function buried somewhere to do this but I've yet to find where that function is after scanning library.gnome.org for a couple of days. I've scanned the Nautilus source code as well but Panels seem to exist elsewhere or are burried well. Thanks in advance

  • Run simple bash script to start applications at login

    - by ganjan
I want to run a simple bash script automatically when I log in. For example #!/bin/bash echo "start spotify" gnome-terminal -e spotify --title spotify When I run this command, one gnome-terminal shows up and spotify show up. I also want the gnome-terminal to popup "hidden" in a different virtual desktop. (one of the other four virtual desktops you can choose from taskbar) I tried to add this to /home/me/.bash_login or something, but that didn't work..

  • How do I install sensors-applet?

    - by honestann
I want to install sensors-applet onto my Ubuntu 12.04 computer. The instructions on this (and other) webpages says to enter this command in a command terminal: sudo apt-get install sensors-applet This is a gnome applet and gnome isn't exactly obscure. Why can sensors-applet package not be found? Before you say "no", note that I was able to execute "gnome-panel" to add a bar/panel along the bottom of my desktop, add 8 cpu-frequency applets to the bar (one per CPU core), and add gnome-panel to my startup applications. So I've already done the basics, and believe all I need now is to be able to download and install the sensors-applet to have that temperature applet available on the panel too. See here.

  • How to Install the MATE Desktop & Go Back to GNOME 2 on Ubuntu

    - by Chris Hoffman
If you long for the days of GNOME 2 and just can’t get along with Unity or GNOME 3, MATE is here to save you. It’s an actively developed fork of GNOME 2, and it’s easily installable on Ubuntu. MATE isn’t available in Ubuntu’s repositories, but the MATE developers offer an official repository for Ubuntu. Unlike some methods that recommend you use Linux Mint’s repository on Ubuntu, this won’t mess up your system. • Why does Ubuntu keep trying to connect to a WiFi network while plugged into an ethernet

    - by labarna
My desk is situated at the edge of the range of a wireless signal which I use occasionally (when away from my desk) and is therefore saved in network manager. At my desk, however, I plug into the ethernet cable. While I'm working the computer is constantly trying to join the wireless network and usually failing this results in two annoying behaviors. 1: In gnome shell the network connect and disconnect notices keep popping up at the bottom of the screen and I have to click them to make them disappear (I assume it's been fixed in the next version of gnome). 2: (the worst!) Occasionally the wifi password dialog will pop up and ask for the password to this network (which is already saved). An additionally annoyance is that in gnome shell I'll get two copies of the dialog that I have to cancel, one is gnome shell themed (no window border etc...) and the other is just normal gnome themed. (Sometimes if I've been away from the computer for a while I will have multiple copies of this dialog up as its been trying to connect for a while resulting in at times 20 dialogs to cancel). Note, all the while I've been happily connected to the ethernet and have full network access. This is incredibly annoying and distracting, why doesn't ubuntu stop trying to connect to wifi if I'm on the ethernet (unless I want to broadcast my own network, but that's different)?

  • Can not login after removing broken packages

    - by devin
I just updated my ubuntu to the latest version. After updating, everytime I try to remove or add anything, I get this error: errors were encountered while processing: E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) Package manager notified me that all my gnome packages were broken and I couldn't make any updates until I deleted the gnome packages. So, I deleted all the gnome packages. Now I can not login anymore, after entering my password, it flashes right back to the login screen.

  • Setting APPMENU_DISPLAY_BOTH for gnome applications does not work on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

    - by Jack'
To start the application with the menu enabled in the application and the panel, the following command has to be used: APPMENU_DISPLAY_BOTH=1 appname I recently discovered that this only works for non-gnome applications on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, i.e. if you replace appname with applications such as gnome-terminal, gedit, evince, empathy, evolution, rhythmbox, nautilus, etc. only global menus will be displayed. However, if you start, for example, gimp or inkscape by using APPMENU_DISPLAY_BOTH, both global and local menus will be shown. The questions is: why is APPMENU_DISPLAY_BOTH not taken into account when starting such gnome applications? P.S. I know how to disable global menus in order to get the local ones (UBUNTU_MENUPROXY trick, removing appmenu-gtk/qt packages, removing the indicator-appmenu, etc.) Thanks for the help!

  • Logging in over and over again. How to fix this?

    - by romeovs
Ok, I messed up. I installed ubuntu 11.10, installed awesome wm and removed unity, to have something to fall back on, I also installed gnome-session-fallback. I was messing around and did the following, because the awesome wiki told me to: gconftool-2 --type bool --set /apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop False # Still disable the buggy Nautilus desktop thing gconftool-2 --type string --set /desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager awesome # sets awesome as wm Now here's what's wrong: I can start up decently, and then I get into a login window (that of gnome-session-fallback). I enter my username, select the preferred window manager (awesome in my case) and enter my password. It accepts these, but then hold for a second and just opens the login window again, in effect preventing me from actually logging in. I also tried gconftool-2 --unset (from the tty) on these settings, but that didn't work either. What can I do to revert the gconftool-2 settings to something that should work? I tried apt-get purging gnome-session-fallback and lightdm, and then installing them again, but that didn't work.

  • Can not authenticate to run GParted

    - by alfish
Whenever I try to run a program from gnome gui, I get message Authenticated is required to run the Gparted Partition Editor The same goes for all programs that need root permission and I try to run from 'System tools' in my gnome-fallback. However the same user can become root in gnome terminal with no problem (I added the user to sudoers). I must mention that I've changed the user's password after OS install, so I think I need to update something but don't know what. I appreciate your hints.

  • Gnome 3 panel and menus are all gone?

    - by Hannes
I am running Ubuntu 11.10 using gnome 3 shell. I have set my pc to automatically log into gnome shell so I do not see the login screen. Today I installed some updates and now the gnome panel is gone. When my pc logs in I ONLY see the background. There are no menus, nothing! Even the exit, minimize and maximise buttons in the top tight corner of the windows are gone. Also, alt+f2 also does not work. Any ideas how to fix this? I have a Nvidia Geforce 7900GTO with the Nvidia proprietary drivers installed. I have also used the recovery mode and removed some packages that apparently were broken. Still does not work.

  • run gnom-terminal with excutable command

    - by user286251
When i run gnome-terminal with the -e to execute a command the PATH used to find the command is not the PATH used in the terminal initiating the command For example: I open an terminal and set the PATH to be "./:$PATH type in gnome-terminal -e cluster_node It can't find the cluster node. if I type gnome-terminal -e ./cluster_node it works If I add in the /etc/environemtn the PATH ./ then it works always/ I think it doesn't use theterminal environment PATH from which it was launched.

  • What to do about this gnome-keyring message?

    - by arroy_0209
I upgraded from ubuntu 10.04 to 12.04 and installed lxde. Since then whenever I try to print some file (or use command lpstat), I get this message on the terminal: "WARNING: gnome-keyring:: couldn't connect to: /tmp/keyring-SZ59jJ/pkcs11: No such file or directory". This is beyond my knowledge and from search I only realize that this mey be related to security (as learned from gnome-keyring on wikipedia). I have no idea what to about this warning. Can anybody please suggest? Evidently as stated, I am not using gnome desktop, I choose lxde session at the time of logging in.

  • Ubuntu 11.10 Gnome 3 shell doesn't have the Activities menu or launcher

    - by Kelly
I installed it from apt-get and it only has Applications and Places instead of the Activities menu, it also doesn't have the dock or launcher. Using the super key does nothing, as neither does mousing to the upper left corner. I have also installed the tweak tool, but it looks like all the settings are not being applied to the UI. Am I missing something. I have never used Gnome 3 before as I recently upgraded from Ubuntu 10.4, which I believe was Gnome 2 for the shell. I have been reading the documentation on the Gnome site and it says there should be an Activity menu and other items that aren't there. Thanks
