    I was using Ubuntu 13.04 till a few days ago. I had installed Nemo and I guess cinnamon got installed too (I was still using Unity nonetheless). One of the good things about that was the lock screen somehow changed to mimick cinnamon's (with the background as a darkened version of desktop background and date/time displayed), something like this: I have no idea how this happened, but it looked great. It does not seem to work on Ubuntu 13.10. Anyone has any ideas to get a similar lock screen? I just need to display the date/time on one side with the bg as a darkened version of my desktop wallpaper

    Running Ubuntu 10.10 in its own partition, also have Oracle Virtualbox 4 with Windows XP. Because i previously had a problem with a dark screen when i let the laptop on and i didn't use it for a long while i had set Power settings to Never sleep, never let the Display sleep. Monitor on install set to Laptop resolution 1400 by 1050, refresh rate 60 Hz, rotation Normal. The problem was when the computer was left on and i returned after about an hour, the screen was unreadable, similar to what used to happen to graphics cards before multisync became normal. So it appears as though the graphics card was asked to use a resolution it couldn't handle and went nuts. I had to power off the system, on restart everything was fine. Thanks for any suggestions.     I have Ubuntu 13.10 set up on an older PC. If I am logged in as a user, then the screen timeout and power saving mode works as expected. However, if nobody is logged in, the screen never times out, and the monitor stays on all the time with the login screen. How can I adjust Ubuntu 13.10 so that the login screen also times out after a minute or so? I don't want the monitor's power saving mode to be disabled just because nobody is currently logged in.

  • How to make xlock use the first key I hit as a part of my password

    I just switched from Arch Linux to Ubuntu 10.10. I'm running the Fluxbox window manager, and I use xlockmore to lock my screen with the following key shortcut: 192 :Exec xlock-mode marquee +usefirst -icongeometry 240x240 -message "back in a minute..." The problem I'm having is that xlock is definitely not using my first key as part of my password. Instead, it uses some randomized fade pattern to fade to the password screen. I find this highly annoying, as when I get back to my desk and start entering my password it doesn't register password characters until the fade pattern is complete. I've also tried the following modifications with no difference: 192 :Exec xlock -mode marquee -usefirst -icongeometry 240x240 -message "back in a minute..." 192 :Exec xlock -mode marquee -icongeometry 240x240 -message "back in a minute..." The first example worked flawlessly on Arch. Does Ubuntu have some sort of system default that you can't override on the command-line?

  • Monitor not turning off when screen saver is on

    I installed Ubuntu for the first time 3 weeks ago and I really love it. I have Ubuntu 12.04. My only problem is that when screen saver is on, it just shows blank screen, and not turning off the monitor, so my monitor is always on. I have Samsung E2220 - 22". I looked over the web and I found this command: sudo xset dpms force off This command shuts down my screen so I don't see a reason why the screen saver can't shut it down. Thanks a lot! Elad

    Hey everyone— I have a home theater PC running Ubuntu 11.10, outputting over HDMI (for audio and video). I'm having an issue: I'd like the screen to lock automatically (when video is not playing, of course) but do not want the screen to turn off automatically, because that kills audio. I can manually lock the screen, of course, but it appears that if you set the "Turn off screen" setting to "never", the screen will never lock, no matter what the "lock screen" timeout is set to. Is there a way to do what I'm asking, or will I have to install xscreensaver?

    When i leave my pc alone for while the screens turns black which is fine, when i return and move my mouse it comes back on but my second screen stays black and my first screen has a blue overlay over the top of the unlock screen. I believe this is to do with my dual screens on gts450. screen 1 is 1920*1080 screen 2 is 1024*768 the blue over lay is on screen one and looks to be the size of screen 2 I can out the password in and press enter and then everything goes back to normal, but how do i fix this issue of a blue overlay stopping me seeing whats on screen.

  • Stuck in screen saver during upgrade

    I'm upgrading from 10.04 to 12.04. The screen saver is now on and I can't exit it. If I type my password or move the mouse the screen flickers. Regardless of what I do the screen saver stays and the login prompt never shows. If I type my password and then enter it, it does nothing. Last time I checked the packages were all downloaded and I was in the install process. I really want this upgrade to work. It would be really bad to have to restart from a fresh install. Cheers.

    Running Fedora 14 and realize I need to either change distros or find an alternative to GNOME 3 in Fedora 17. Based on what I have read to-date, XFCE and KDE are the go-to WMs if I want to avoid GNOME 3. I tried KDE 4 and I wasn't impressed; I like the simplicity of GNOME 2 with Compiz and Emerald. Can't stay on Fedora 14 forever, however, so...where to turn? Basically looking for these features in my desktop environment: GNOME Do or equivalent Snap to grid/Window tiling A must-have, the ability to hot key focused window to a monitor grid region is a huge productivity win. Zoom window to cursor In a multi-monitor setup sometimes it's nice to, say, GNOME Do terminal in one monitor and then hot key the opened window to the other monitor just by zipping the mouse cursor anywhere on target monitor (followed by, of course, snap-to-grid hotkey, all without a single mouse click) Polarization At night white background hurts the eyes, so I prefer to hot key polarize to black. Multi-monitor support I'm partial to Fedora given that I've worked with CentOS for years and have little experience with any other Linux distro; however, if the difference between Fedora and Arch, Mint, etc. is fairly subtle, I'll make the leap, just need a distro & desktop environment that allows me to be productive with keyboard hot keys and provides the above basic features. Any suggestions?

    My new laptop has a big 16:9 screen, and I'm finding it hard to fully utilize it during the 95% of the time that I'm not watching HD movies on it. I'd like to set it up as a kind of virtual dual screen by splitting the physical screen into two workspaces. I know I could arrange my windows manually, but I'd like to be able to maximize a window and have it only consume half the monitor, and have its pop up dialogs centered on its half-screen, that sort of thing. Is there some kind of plug in available to do this? Thanks in advance for any pointers.

  • Gnome Terminal intercepts ctrl-F1

    Gnome Terminal does not pass on to applications the keypress ctrl-F1. It's an official bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-terminal/+bug/932940 The bug is marked Feb. 2012 but lives on in serendipity since 2009. The bug report is not even complete since shift-ctrl-F1 is also affected. However, I noticed that those two keys are the default keys for switch-to-workspace-1 and move-to-workspace-1. So I disabled them. Zero, zippo, zilch: Gnome Terminal would still swallow the keys. Next, I assigned to those two workspace functions totally different keys. The new keybindings did work, Gnome Terminal would still swallow ctrl-F1 and shift-ctrl-F1. Where are the default workspace keybindings stored? [Not in a xml-file.]

  • Constantly visible notification and access icon for Empathy in Gnome 3

    Since a short while I'm using Ubuntu Oneiric Ocelot (11.10) with gnome-shell (Gnome 3) and I'm trying to get accustomed to the default Empathy Instant Messaging client. One mayor problem for me (coming from Gnome 2 and Psi) is that there is no constantly visible icon which makes it clear (for example by changing its icon or showing an animation) if there are incoming messages which I did not read already and which lets me jump into them with one click. Also I'm missing a way to bring up the contact list or hide it away with a click. I sometimes have real problems even figuring out how to even open the contact list up again. Is there a Gnome 3 extension or some other trick available to display such a notifier in the top bar? I'm talking about something just like the sound and network controls which are already located there. I know that there are notifications in the lower notification area (former system tray), but as it is only visible as I move the mouse in the lower right corner of the screen, its useless for me.

  • GNOME PPP doesn't connect

    I am a new ubuntu user and connect to the internet using wi-fi broadband on my notebook. But I need to setup a dial-up connection through my phone which can keep me online while I travel. I have tried connecting to dial-up using pppconfig, wvdial and gnome-ppp. I do not know whether they use the same files for connecting but I have only been able to connect using Gnome-ppp. But the connection is intermittent and disconnects every five seconds or so. The exit code is 16 which I checked in man and got to know that the modem hangs itself up. I am connecting my phone to ubuntu as a usb modem. And as I am new I might have skipped a step or two. Please suggest a solution or an alternative to this. I have put down the Gnome-ppp log.     Is there any way to kill a zombie process without reboot?Here is how it happens: I wanted to download a 12GB torrent.After adding the .torrent file, transmission turned into a zombie process.I tried ktorrent too.Same behavior.Finally I could download the file using µTorrent but after closing the program, it turns into a zombie as well. I tried using kill skill and pkill with different options and -9 signal but no success. In some answers in web I found out killing the parent can kill the zombie, but killing wine didn't help either. Is there another way?     I am trying to type documents in Hindi language. My OS: Ubuntu 11.10 Gnome environment (http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=gnome-session-fallback) I do not use unity interface.The method is shown here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LL7icGNhIfI I am able to type in Hindi in Libreoffice and gedit as well with method shown above.But this is a very difficult way of typing because I have to remember all the English Keys corresponding to the Hindi words as mapped here http://docs.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/5/html-single/International_Language_Support_Guide/images/hindi.png What I want to be able to do is type phonetically and not use above kind of keyboard. I have US English keyboard in my laptop.     I use mainly Terminator, and it's usually opened with 3 split terminal windows. I also use Gnome terminal for various reasons. I'm wondering how is bash history handled in this case as I sometimes miss previously issued commands when I run history For example, my prompt shows current bash history line (\!) and if I launch Terminator with 3 split terminal windows I get same history line (let's say 100) on all terminals. Which history will be saved? Also launching Gnome Terminal after using Terminator I get line 100 at startup regardless all commands issued before in Terminator

    al descargar un archivo a través de cualquier navegador (chrome, firefox, etc) e intentar abrirlo directamente, en vez de abrirse el archivo se abre el directorio en que se descargó. lo mismo me sucedió al intentar abrir un archivo desde el dash de gnome-shell. Esto sólo me sucede con los accesos directos a los archivos, cuando estoy dentro de nautilus se abre el archivo sin problemas. he intentado en distintos entornos de escritorio, el que uso más constantemente es Gnome-Shell, bajo Ubuntu 12.04 ¿cómo lo puedo solucionar?   • Is there a keybind to minimize all windows, without a toggle?

    I know about the show desktop keybind (default Ctrl+Alt+D), which I use often enough. However, I'm looking for a way to minimize all windows without activating "show desktop". I'm on a default install (i.e Gnome, Metacity & Compiz). I've looked through all the locations to configure keybinds, that I know. I've also looked at the default keybind list in the Ubuntu wiki and in the Compiz wiki. (Not to mention, searching here.) I'm interested in knowing where it is available, if not in Gnome/Metacity/Compiz, or some other way to accomplish this with a keybind.
