    Was für ein Tag! Unter dem Motto „Maximize your Potential“ kamen über 470 Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer beim Oracle Partner Day 2012 zusammen. Hier drehte sich alles um unsere Partner, die, wie Silvia Kaske, Senior Director Alliances & Channel Europe North, in ihrer Begrüßung betonte, „ein sehr wichtiger Baustein in der Wachstumsstrategie von Oracle“ sind. Wie einmalig diese Partnerschaft ist, betonte auch David Callaghan, Senior Vice President EMEA Alliances & Channel in seiner Keynote. Niemand sonst habe, so Callaghan, in ähnlichem Ausmaß wie Oracle, Hardware und Software tatsächlich integriert. So manche Anbieter würden zwar beides zusammenschnüren, aber bei weitem nicht so optimal abgestimmt und verflochten, wie beim „Red Stack“ von Oracle. Neben Keynotes von Jürgen Kunz, SVP Technology Northern Europe & Country Leader Germany, und Christian Werner, Senior Director Alliances & Channels Germany, zu Neuheiten und Entwicklungspotenzialen im Oracle Universum und den Präsentationen aus verschiedenen Spezialisierung-Fachgebieten, gab es sogar einen Blick in die Zukunft der IT: Der Informatiker Professor Hermann Maurer präsentierte nicht nur existierende und geplante Innovationen, etwa die berüchtigte Computerbrille, die bald das Smartphone abzulösen soll – eine ordentliche Portion Science-Fiction war auch dabei. Im Laufe des Tages nutzten diverse Partner die Möglichkeit, vor Ort den Test als OPN Implementation Specialist beim Testcenter Pearson Vue abzulegen. Viele Teilnehmer zeigten sich beeindruckt von den vielen guten Gesprächen untereinander und schöpften die Möglichkeit zum Networking und Erfahrungsaustausch voll aus. Bei einem so dichten Programm ist es natürlich schwierig, wirklich alles mitzunehmen. Daher haben wir die Präsentationen, die auf dem Oracle Partner Day gehalten wurden, hier in der Agenda noch einmal für Sie zusammengestellt. Spannend wurde es bei der Oracle Partner Award Ceremony: Zum zweiten Mal wurden dort deutsche Partner ausgezeichnet, die sich mit besonderem Engagement und Erfolg spezialisiert haben. Wer die glücklichen Gewinner sind und was ihr Unternehmen auszeichnet, lesen sie ebenfalls hier im Blog. Allen Siegern gratulieren wir noch einmal ganz herzlich! Nachdem es im voraus schon wilde Spekulationen gab, was sich wohl hinter der „Oracle Sports Challenge“ verbergen würde, wollen wir diese Frage auch hier auflösen: Wer nach dem vielen Sitzen Lust auf Bewegung hatte, konnte sich verschiedenen, mehr oder weniger sportlichen Herausforderungen stellen. Zu meistern waren verschiedene Geschicklichkeits-Spiele, unter anderem ein fast mannshoher „Oracle Stack“, den es in Yenga-Manier aufrecht zu erhalten galt, Torschüsse auf ein Tor, das von einem vollautomatischen Robo-Keeper bewacht wurde und eine Video-Wand mit einem spielerischen Reaktionstest rund um den „Red Stack“. Den ganzen Tag über konnten die Teilnehmer hinter QR-Codes versteckte Buchstaben sammeln und mit etwas Glück und Geschick einen von drei iPod Supernanos gewinnen. Abgerundet wurde das Programm durch Auftritte der Entertainment-Saxophonistinnen „Hot Sax Club“, der beeindruckenden Fußball-Freestyler mit ihrer Ballakrobatik, dem Close-up Magier Marc Gassert und unseren DJ, der für Stimmung sorgte.   • MySQL Connect: Interview with Tomas Ulin

    The MySQL Connect conference is taking place September 29-30 in San Francisco. We asked a few questions about the event to Oracle’s VP of MySQL Engineering Tomas Ulin. Hi Tomas, to start with, what is MySQL Connect? A: MySQL Connect is a conference delivered by Oracle, with and for the MySQL Community. We’ll have over 60 technical breakout sessions, Birds-of-a-feather sessions and Hands-On labs running throughout the two days, plus the keynotes. So it’s a fantastic opportunity to learn a huge amount in only two days, and to network with Oracle engineers, users, customers and partners. When will the program be available online? A: The call for papers ended May 6 and we got an amazing response. The content committee has been working hard to build a great program, and the content catalog will be available by mid-June. Will Oracle MySQL engineers developing and supporting the products be there? A: Absolutely. And they’ll be available during the whole conference to answer questions. What do you plan to cover in your keynote? A: That’s a secret...:). Oracle is driving a lot of MySQL innovations and I will spend time on the latest developments, as well as help folks understand where we are going. What should attendees definitely not miss? A: We’ll have so many great sessions that the list could be long…but I also think the Saturday eve reception should not be missed. It’s always a lot of fun to meet so many MySQL users and have passionate discussions in a relaxed setting. What do you personally look forward to?   • PASS 13 Dispatches: moving to the cloud

    PASS Summit 13, Day 1 keynote by Quentin Clarke and we're hearing about “redefiniing mission critical in the cloud”. With a move to the Windows Azure cloud comes the promise of capacity on demand, automatic HA, backups, patching and so on, as well as passing responsibility to MS for managing hardware, upgrades and so on. However, for many databases and applications the best route to the cloud is not necessarily obvious. For most, the path of least resistance is IaaS – SQL Server in a Azure VM. It removes the hardware burden but you still have to manage your databases and implementing HA for SQL Server is your responsibility. Also, scaling up comes at quite a cost – the biggest VM (8 CPU cores, 56 GB RAM, 16 1TB drives with 500 IOPS each) weighs in at over over $4500 per month. With PaaS, in the form of Windows SQL Database, you get a “3-copies replica set” so HA comes out-of the box, and removes the majority of the administration burden, but you are moving your database into a very different environment. For a start, it's a shared environment, with other customers using the same compute nodes in the cluster, and potentially even sharing the same database (multi-tenancy). Unless you pay for SQL DB Premium edition, the resources available for your workload will depends on how nicely others “play” in the shared environment. You'll potentially need to do a lot of tuning, and application rewriting to avoid throttling issues, optimising application-database communication to deal with increased latency between the two, and so on. You'll need aggressive application caching. You'll also need retry logic and to deal with (expected) node failure and the need to reconnect. In Tuesday's PASS Summit pre-con from the SQLCAT team, they spent a lot of time covering some of the telemetric techniques (collect into Azure storage the necessary monitoring data) to perform capacity planning, work out the hotspots and bottlenecks in your cloud applications. Tools like WAD (Windows Azure Diagnostics), performance counters SQL Database DMVs, and others, will be essential. Of course, to truly exploit the vast horizontal scaling that is available from the existence of thousands of compute nodes, you'll also need to need to consider how to “shard” your data so Azure can move it between nodes at will. Finding the right path to the Cloud isn't easy, but it's coming. I spoke to people one year ago who saw no real benefit in trying to move their infrastructure and databases to the cloud, but now at their company, it's the conversation that won't go away. Tony.

  • SQL Saturday #162 Cambridge

    Despite the efforts of American Airlines, this past weekend I attended the first SQL Saturday in the UK!  Hosted by the SQLCambs Chapter of PASS and organized by Mark (b|t) & Lorraine Broadbent, ably assisted by John Martin (b|t), Mark Pryce-Maher (b|t) and other folks whose names I've unfortunately forgotten, it was held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, which is completely surrounded by Cambridge University. On Friday, they presented 3 pre-conference sessions given by the brilliant American Cloud & DBA Guru, Buck Woody (b|t), the brilliant Danish SQL Server Internals Guru, Mark Rasmussen (b|t), and the brilliant Scottish Business Intelligence Guru and recent Outstanding Pass Volunteer, Jen Stirrup (b|t).  While I would have loved to attend any of their pre-cons (having seen them present several times already), finances and American Airlines ultimately made that impossible.  But not to worry, I caught up with them during the regular sessions and at the speaker dinner.  And I got back the money they all owed me.  (Actually I owed Mark some money) The schedule was jam-packed even with only 4 tracks, there were 8 regular slots, a lunch session for sponsor presentations, and a 15 minute keynote given by Buck Woody, who besides giving an excellent history of SQL Server at Microsoft (and before), also explained the source of the "unknown contact" image that appears in Outlook.  Hint: it's not Buck himself. Amazingly, and against all better judgment, I even got to present at SQL Saturday 162!  I did a 5 minute Lightning Talk on Regular Expressions in SSMS.  I then did a regular 50 minute session on Constraints.  You can download the content for the regular session at that link, and for the regular expression presentation here. I had a great time and had a great audience for both of my sessions.  You would never have guessed this was the first event for the organizers, everything went very smoothly, especially for the number of attendees and the relative smallness of the space.  The event sponsors also deserve a lot of credit for making themselves fit in a small area and for staying through the entire event until the giveaways at the very end. Overall this was one of the best SQL Saturdays I've ever attended and I have to congratulate Mark B, Lorraine, John, Mark P-M, and all the volunteers and speakers for making this an astoundingly hard act to follow!  Well done!

  • Oracle Developer Day, Poland, 2012

    Oracle Developer Day took place in Poland today. Oracle's Gregor Rayman did the keynote, where NetBeans was positioned, yet again, as Oracle's IDE for the Java Platform, via the JavaFX Roadmap: Well, it's not so clear from my pic above, but NetBeans is closely tied to the JavaFX Roadmap, as well as the JDK Roadmap too. Then the tracks started, one of which was the Java Track (the other two tracks were on ADF/WebLogic and SOA/BPM/BAM), where among other things I demonstrated the Java EE 6 Platform via tools in NetBeans IDE at some length. The room could hardly have been fuller, chairs had to be brought in and people were standing along the walls. The above pic shows the session being set up, with the room full of developers ready to hear about Java EE 6. I also did a session on pluggable Java desktop development (i.e., NetBeans Platform) and on "What's New in NetBeans IDE 7.1?", while Martin Grebac had a session on Java EE Web Services. Some of the many questions asked during the day that I thought were interesting: Is there localization support for the @Pattern annotation? I.e., what if I want to display the error message in Polish, what do I do? Is there filtering/sorting support for the DataTable component in JSF? Why is there no visual editor for ejb-jar.xml, in the same way that there is for web.xml? "Would be handy if there were to be a JSR for IDE Keyboard Shortcuts." (Two different people asked this question, separately, without knowing about each other. The second didn't know about the Eclipse and IntelliJ keyboard shortcut support in NetBeans IDE and was happy when I told them about it.) Wouldn't it be cool if, on start up, or during installation, there'd be a question: "Are you migrating from Eclipse/IntelliJ?" Then, if "yes", reset the keyboard shortcuts to match the IDE they're coming from.Is there a way in NetBeans to find subclasses of a class? "Would be cool if HTML or JSF files could be visualized in the same way as JavaFX and Swing classes." I.e., Visual Debugger for web developers. I had a great day and am looking at the Oracle Developer Day that will be held in Cluj, Romania, on Friday.

  • OpenWorld Day 1

    A Day in the Life of an OpenWorld Attendee Part I Lots of people are blogging insightfully about OpenWorld so I thought I would provide some non-insightful remarks to buck the trend! With 50,000 attendees I didn’t expect to bump into too many people I knew, boy was I wrong!  I walked into the registration area and immediately was hailed by a couple of customers I had worked with a few months ago.  Moving to the employee registration area in a different hall I bumped into a colleague from the UK who was also registering.  As soon as I got my badge I bumped into a friend from Ireland!  So maybe OpenWorld isn’t so big after all! First port of call was Larrys Keynote.  As always Larry was provocative and thought provoking.  His key points were announcing the Oracle cloud offering in IaaS, PaaS and SaaS, pointing out that Fusion Apps are cloud enabled and finally announcing the 12c Database, making a big play of its new multi-tenancy features.  His contention was that multi-tenancy will simplify cloud development and provide better security by providing DB level isolation for applications and customers. Next day, Monday, was my first full day at OpenWorld.  The first session I attended was on monitoring of OSB, very interesting presentation on the benefits achieved by an Illinois area telco – US Cellular.  Great discussion of why they bought the SOA Management Packs and the benefits they are already seeing from their investment in terms of improved provisioning and time to market, as well as better performance insight and assistance with capacity planning. Craig Blitz provided a nice walkthrough of where Coherence has been and where it is going. Last night I attended the BOF on Managed File Transfer where Dave Berry replayed Oracles thoughts on providing dedicated Managed File Transfer as part of the 12c SOA release.  Dave laid out the perceived requirements and solicited feedback from the audience on what if anything was missing.  He also demoed an early version of the functionality that would simplify setting up MFT in SOA Suite and make tracking activity much easier. So much for Day 1.  I also ran into scores of old friends and colleagues and had a pleasant dinner with my friend from Ireland where I caught up on the latest news from Oracle UK.  Not bad for Day 1!

  • Hardware and Software Working Together - What Does LJE say?

     IDG News Service - Oracle CEO Larry Ellison said Oracle will continue to bet on selling high-end custom hardware for its software products, even amidst a growing trend toward roomfuls of cheap, generic servers. "You have to be in the hardware business and the software business, to get the best possible system," he said during a keynote speech at Oracle's OpenWorld conference in Tokyo. "We believe it's the right idea, we believe it's the next generation of computing, we believe all the pieces have to fit together." Ellison, as he has often done in the past, repeatedly referred to Apple as his "favorite example" of such tight integration. He was a close friend of Apple's co-founder Steve Jobs and previously served on Apple's board of directors.He said sales of Oracle's advanced servers were booming and generating around a billion dollars a year in revenue for the company, which has until recent years focused almost exclusively on its software offerings. With the explosion of popular online services and the increasing number of mobile devices that access them, demand is high for databases that can quickly respond to high numbers of relatively simple queries. While Oracle is pitching its expensive, finely-tuned machines to meet this requirement, Internet behemoths like Google, Facebook and Microsoft increasingly rely on armies of low-cost, easily replaceable servers. Ellison emphasized the high specifications of Oracle's servers, which come packed with multiple terabytes of RAM and flash-based storage for speed. Such machines are superior to large server farms, he said, because they require far less electricity and floor space, and are also cost competitive. When asked about whether purchasing such products would lock customers in to expensive hardware from Oracle, he promised that the company's software would always run on "multiple hardware sources."  Ellison, who spoke from Kyoto, Japan's ancient capital, was shown live online via webcast.   • Agile PLM Highlights from Oracle OpenWorld 2012

    Thank you to everyone who joined us at Oracle OpenWorld this year, either in person or virtually (thanks for tweeting #oowplm)!  From customer presentations to after-hours networking opportunities, there was a lot to see and do during the entire conference. Sessions It was our pleasure to feature several customer speakers during our PLM sessions at OpenWorld from such companies as Starbucks, Coca-Cola, Facebook, Eli Lilly, and many more.  Each had a unique perspective to share and fascinating insight into how they successfully leverage Agile PLM to facilitate profitable innovation, protect brand integrity, streamline operations, manage compliance, launch faster, etc.  For example, during the Product Value Chain keynote session, CIO Chris Bedi of JDSU shared how they implemented Agile PLM to support business imperatives around rapid innovation, centralizing product information, collaboration, and eliminate the “Excel gymnastics” required to obtain global portfolio visibility.   • TDC: The Developer's Conference Day One

    The Developer's Conference (TDC) kicked off Wednesday in São Paulo, Brazil. With over 3000 developers in attendance over five days, it is the premier multi-community developer conference in Brazil, organized by Globalcode. Yara Senger, one of the organizers said, "We like to say multi-community rather than multi-technology because it is interesting and benefical when various communities get together. They learn so much from each other!" TDC includes tracks on Java and several other technologies, including SOA, Python, Ruby, mobile and digital TV. In the mobile track, developers who create a Java ME app will get a Nokia S40 phone!New this year at TDC is the Java University track, sponsored by Oracle.  It is aimed at university students and professionals who are new to Java. The lectures are introductory level, with an educational focus and practical exercises. The Java track and other tracks, such as SOA, mobile and Digital TV, are getting lots of help from the expertise of Brazilian JUGS members. Thanks to GoJava, JavaBahia, JavaNoroeste and SouJava!Carlos Fernando, one of the coordinators on the Digital TV track, said "My goal is to teach developers the basics of digital TV, and show them the tools used to build interactive TV applications." Fernando explained the concept of "the second screen:" that many people watch TV and have second smart device (tablet or smartphone) with them, and this creates many opportunities for developers. For example, while watching TV, a viewer can get extra content (interviews, behind the scenes) on their tablet. More interestingly, while watching their favorite TV show a viewer likes an outfit one of the actors is wearing, their smartphone can tell them where they can buy it nearby, or they can order it online immediately. Fernando exclaimed, "The opportunities for developers are nearly infinite in the area of digital TV!" At the TDC opening keynote, Debora Palermo, Oracle University country manager for Brazil, reminded attendees that Java is present in many devices, from simple to complex, and knowledge of this platform can open many doors in the labor market. She explained Oracle's Workforce Development Program (WDP), managed by Oracle University, which allows educational institutions to deliver Oracle training. WDP allows for easy and low-cost access to Oracle training in local communities across the world. "Oracle University is committed to creating the next generation of Java developers, and WDP can make that happen," Palermo said. As of March 2012, Oracle University is partnering with Globalcode to offer WDP. Students can earn official Oracle Course Certifications, a great way to learn Java.Brazilian developers that cannot attend TDC can watch live streaming.
