• Really new to XCode. Why won't the thing run?

  Hi, I'm trying to follow the April 2009 and Winter 2010 Stanford iPhone app development videos and I'm running up against the same problems with both. First, they don't appear to be using the latest version of XCode - the Outlets and Actions panels are in a different window and there is little info on the net about this (other than one other post on S.O.F.) Second, having got to the point where I've managed to connect the slider, label and changedLabelText connections, I save, build and run the app - the simulator loads, the app loads and then promptly closes again. What's going on? I have not written any code yet and I still have an app which, while it compiles, does not behave! Is there a better starting point for an XCode noob than the Stanford vids? • Customizing UISlider look

  To customize the visual look of a UISlider you can set the thumb and track images. Part of the track images gets stretched to the appropriate with. From the documentation: A stretchable region sits between two end cap regions. The end caps define the portions of the image that remain as is and are not stretched. The stretchable region is a 1-point wide area between the end caps that can be replicated to make the image appear longer. Now the problem I have is that my stretchable region needs to be more than 1-point wide. (It's a pattern) Unfortunately the 1-point width seems to be hard coded in the SDK. Anyone having an idea how to work around this? Or will I have to write my own slider from scratch for this?

• What's the VB.NET equivalent of this C# code for wiring up and declaring an event?

  I'm working on a tutorial to build a media player in Silverlight and am trying to wire up an EventHandler to the timer.Tick event of a DispatchTimer object so that the time of the video is synced with a Slider object. The sample code is in C# and I can't for the life of me figure out the proper syntax in VB.NET with RaiseEvent and/or Handles to wire up the event. Below is the relevant C# code. • Service Application too visible

  Working on a service application in Delphi 5 that is intended to run on Windows XP - 7. Most of the application is coming together nicely, but I'm running into one issue. Part of this service application is a form that displays data occasionally (similar to the slider box Avast uses to let you know its updated). When the service shows the form, the form displays on the taskbar, but we don't want it to. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to hide the form's button on the taksbar? None of the standard methods I've found for regular applications have worked so far. Thanks.

  I'm just starting to work with Silverlight (no WPF experience either) and am having a difficult time finding a source that provides a full explanation of Data Binding. There is absolutely no lack of tutorials (starting with the ones on Silverlight.net or Scott Gu's blogs), but everything I have found is "by example". Is there a resource that explains how data binding works in Silverlight, from a Fundamental/Conceptual perspective, and provides end-to-end coverage of data binding features? The desire for a more fundamental source of information is driven by a number of questions that came up this afternoon in reviewing tutorials and writing sample apps, such as: Why can't I bind the value of a slider like this?: Value="{Binding=Age, Mode=TwoWay}" where Age refers to an int property in the object data context I bind in code-behind (the Visual Studio error message is Expected '[]'. • How to use CSS to ensure items remain offscreen even if window is resized?

  I am trying to implement a type of slider using jquery. However this question is about the CSS involved in trying to achieve the functionality. My site design occupies a central column of width 960px. Within this layout there is a central element, that I wish to slide right, on click of a "next" button, and at the same time, another element of the same class slides in from the left to occupy the space vacated. I have drawn a diagram of what I am trying to achieve. In this diagram the red blocks are the element I want to slide in and out, it is grouped by a div which moves left to produce the effect using jQuery I have 2 main questions: How do I get the correct margin values, given that the browser window width can vary and that all elements that are not the current item should be offscreen? 2.If the user were to resize the margins could be dynamically altered based on the values returned using the jQuery resize() event. Or is there a neater quicker better way of doing it using pure CSS?

• Why is display:inline killing IE 8.0 performance?

  I have an image gallery based on this jQuery plugin: http://jqueryfordesigners.com/demo/slider-gallery.html This works really well in Firefox, Chrome and even IE 7.0, but when I try it with more than 50 images in IE 8.0 the performance is incredible slow. Just hovering over the thumbnail brings the CPU load to 100%. At first I thought it's a Javascript problem, so I used the IE profiler, but the results were normal. Next I checked the CSS and finally found the cause: .sliderGallery UL LI { display: inline; } This gets the thumbnails to align horizontally. If I chance it to display:block, performance is fine and the scroller is still working but obviously it looks funny, because the thumbs are aligned vertically. My questions: Why does IE 8 have this problem with many display:inline elements What can I do to solve it I'll gladly provide more information if necessary.

• How to organize XIB files with many overlapping elements?

  I have some XIB files which are very difficult to edit because many of the subviews overlap each other completely. For example, if I position a popup volume slider where it will pop up, it covers some UILabels which become impossible to click. My only chance to be able to edit them is to double-click on them in the Document window tree, move them aside, edit, then move them back. Sometimes there are 3 or more widgets that occupy the same location in the XIB, even though only a few are visible at a time while the application is running. How are conditionally-visible screen elements actually supposed to be organized? I would like to be able to hide groups of views to reveal what's beneath them, but I don't see a way to do that in IB. If I create UIViewControllers for every group, I can edit them in separate windows, but I can't see them in context, and I need a lot of view controllers...

• Closing a window when it's "no longer needed".

  This is kind of a hard question to describe, and I've searched for about an hour now to no avail. Essentially, picture a small 'flyout' window like the Windows 7 Wireless Control or the Volume Slider from the system tray(notification area). When you click on the icon, the application pops up with focus, and if you click off of it, the window destroys itself. I thought it woudl be easily solved by simply having my window destroy it self when it loses focus (I've been listening for WM_KILLFOCUS), but the problem is, if the icon is clicked, my window does not always get focus. Since this isn't the case, if the user clicks my icon, and then clicks away because it was a mistake (on the desktop say), then how can I set my app to close? I've tried messing with SPY++ but checking the volume control / wireless control apps are proving difficult as they disappear when I try to get their window/process handles. Thanks!

• How to make some simple GUI controls?

  I need to make a DirectX or OpenGL app and i will need a custom GUI for that. I think a button, a input text box, a list box (that will need a scroll bar as there will be more items that can fit on the screen) and a slider control will be enough. I know about CeGUI framework but i just don't like it, way too many XML files for my taste. My question is where should i start in learning how to do this custom GUI controls, are there any tutorial available or any material that could get me started? I haven't done a GUI contol myself before.

And it works, BUT for another reason wich I do not understand it enters another jquery file called jsloader.js of a plugin I use for picture gallery display. I suppose all the module jquery files get preloaded before the one im calling inside the template. it enters the function() in the jsloader.js instead of the one in my jquery file. • Firing a Keyboard Event at the Body - JavaScript (?)

  I've done a lot of research on this but have come up empty handed. What I would like to do is invoke or create an event for the right arrow key (Key Code 39). I was planning on using an onclick event inside an tag to go to a function where this event could be 'fired'. Any help would be appreciated. If anyone needs context, I have a jQuery content slider that's functionality is very hard to alter and currently the functionality I need to emulate only occurs when a user hits the right arrow on their keyboard. What I would like to do is tie an onclick() event to a image that when clicked on fires the right keyboard event and the content will slide. • jquery animate() problem (syntax ?)

  $('#somediv').stop(false, true).animate({marginLeft: '-=' + e.width() + 'px'}, options.speed, function(){ options.onNewSlide() }) e.with() returns 640 opctions.speed contains 800 options.onNewSlide() contains a a custom callback function It works fine in firefox. But i debugged it with jquery.lint because it was throwing some random error in IE. lint tells me: When I called animate(...) with your args, an error was thrown! TypeError: c.speed is not a function { message="c.speed is not a function", more...} You passed: [Object { marginLeft="-=640px"}, 800, function()] and it indicates me the line i have posted. I have checked the jquery doc, but my syntax seams ok. Do you know what i am doing wrong? • New to Drupal -- how should I create a main page with a mix of dynamic and static content?

  I apologize for the terribly basic question but I'm not even a particularly adept web dev. I've read that Drupal is great if you know exactly what you want to do (then the API is handy) but I don't even know what I need yet. That is what I am hoping to gain from this discussion. I want a main content page which has a fancy content slider (using jQuery or something) which will be a selector for showing some basic information on these 2 or 3 subjects. I'm stuck on where I should be writing this mix of markup. In the template? Create "content" through a content type? Since there's a fair share of CSS and markup required to do this, I don't know if I can do that through the "basic page" content type that was there. I'm looking for pointers that can teach me how I would become aware of what Drupal can and can not do. Thanks for reading, let me know if I need to clarify anything.

• Tabbed application troubles in xcode

  I am working with my first tabbed application in xcode. I am just testing with some stuff since I'm relatively new to programming. I am just using the 2 views already put into the template. I am putting a slider into the first view and am going to attach it to a text box with numbers. But that isn't the problem! This is probably really stupid and simple, but when i run the application just to see the stuff on the simulator, it is just showing a black screen. NO CLUE WHY! But its killing me and would love some help!

  I have the following class structure for custom UITableViewCells: NumericEntryCell - Contains method for controlling max value that can be entered into a textbox. SliderCell - inherits from NEC and contains methods for handling slider-control of textbox value TextOnlyCell - just contains a textbox CellA - inherits from SliderCell and has a max value of 28 CellB - inherits from TextOnlyCell and has a max value of 150. I want NumericEntryCell to contain a definition for a property that contains the maxValue. I want to be able to set a value for this in the initialize method of a child class (CellA or CellB). Currently I have an int maxValue declared in the interface of NEC. I declare a property for this with @property int maxValue and @synthesize it within the .m file. However, attempting to modify this property's value from CellA or CellB's initialize method has no effect - when I hit a breakpoint in the NEC method that uses this value, its value is always zero. How can I get this to work?

• Problem with caching images on server- jQuery

  Hi I have the weirdest problem. I am implementing a simple gallery with a use of nivo slider jQuery plugin. Everything works perfectly when I test it on my local machine, however I am having an issue on an online hosted server. The images do not tend to appear when you first open the website. There seems to be an issue with caching the images. when you reload the page (simple f5) everything works fine. • How to add Transparency information to a HEX color code?

  I have to modify some code and the previous developer left this comment: color: color, // e.g. '#RRGGBBFF' - Last 2 digits are alpha information On the page there is a color picker that let's the user change text color. It gives HEX values like so: #RRGGBB And there is a slider that allows the user to change a text's transparency. It runs from 0.1 to 1 Somehow I need to get a 2 digit letter from this transparency amount and append it to the HEX value for it to work. Does anyone know how to append Alpga information to HEX color codes? What is the math formula for it? I guess the question can also be answered if anyone knows how to concert RGBA color values with transparency into HEX: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.6)

  VS2008, 32 Bit Win XP In a class derived from CFrameWnd, I have an object of CDialogBar that needs to have certain controls on it. Among these controls would be 2 sliders, whose event handling is to be done in CFrameWnd derived class. How shall I go about this? class CFrameWndCustom : public CFrameWnd { CDialogBar m_wndDialogBar; // the CDialogBar object. } In CFrameWnd derived class's OnCreateClient, I have created the DialogBar using the above object like: //Create the DialogBar if (!m_wndDialogBar.Create(this, IDD_DIALOGBAR_CONTROL, CBRS_BOTTOM, IDD_DIALOGBAR_CONTROL)) { TRACE("Warning: Couldn't create DialogBar Control!\n"); return FALSE; } Here, IDD_DIALOGBAR_CONTROL is a dialog resource with Style as Child. After this, I drag-dropped a CSliderCtrl on the IDD_DIALOGBAR_CONTROL in Resource View. Now, how/where should I handle the CSliderCtrl's events? There would be 2 such slider controls.
