  Trying to access my Mac from a Windows 7 computer, I fail with the infamous error 86 incorrect password. Now this appears to be a well-known problem with countless threads on the internet giving as many "solutions" as there are discussion threads about it (mostly ranging from installing third-party commercial samba servers, to switching to some other protocol, to compiling a plain-vanilla Samba installation - the latter which I will probably do when I give up this :) ) I am stubborn, and I believe there must be some problem here that can be solved or worked around, but there is surprisingly little detail about this problem. It appears to have something to do with a mismatch of authentication methods. • Loading guest OS's (Windows) localhost through my host's (Mountain Lion) browsers

  For work, I have to develop in Visual Studio, which I run via VMware's fusion 5. I really want to test via my mac's native browsers for a multitude of reasons. that is, view the IIs web stuffs that my windows VM should expose, in my mac's own native Firefox, Chrome... etc. if i could expose a pretty url, that would be even better, but i would certainly settle for an ugly IP :) I got a decent number of views but no response when I asked in VMware's own boards. Everyone seems to want to go the other direction (developing in sublimetext/textmate serving up through MAMP and exposing it to windows browsers to test) and there seems to be tried a true solutions for this. unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your preference) my startup is pretty entrenched in the visual studio development tools. I'm really hoping that someone knows the answer to this. Thanks :)

I want to create a dvd disk that essentailly has 2 purposes: When a DVD is inserted into a standard DVD player it plays like a normal DVD film, i.e. you get the DVD menu and you can play the movie When you insert the dvd into a pc it auto launches an exe file and behaves like a normal data disk.

  I intend to use a small form factor PC with Windows 7 Professional installed as a network appliance attached directly to my customer's LAN without connecting a monitor, keyboard or mouse. How should I configure the networking for my PC so that I can access it via say my laptop? I figure that I can do it 2 ways. Attach my laptop to the PC using a crossover cable? Connect via RDP and configure networking. Configure an IP address on the PC before I deliver it to the customer place. At the customer's place, attach the PC to LAN and connect to the IP address which I previously configured from my laptop or from one of the customer's workstations. I know the first way is doable, but is the second way possible? I'm sorry if this question sounds ridiculous - I am Delphi programmer but a novice on networking. Finally, if possible, I hope to make the configuration process web based as I wouldn't like to reveal the fact that I am using Win7 Pro for the network appliance!

• Asus EEE PC 1005HA (XP Home) refuses to connect to Virgin Mobile MiFi

  My client has an Asus EEE PC model 1005HA, and we're attempting to connect it to the WiFi network created by a VirginMobile MiFi unit. They also have a MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard that has absolutely no issue connecting to the MiFi. The specific symptom is that the netbook fails to lease an IP address from the MiFi unit. I supply the 12-digit numerical password (WPA) to the netbook, it throws a 'waiting for network' dialog with an indeterminate progress indicator, and then times out. Update: We've determined that this behavior has stopped when the EEE PC and the MiFi unit were taken out of the client's home, and to a different home that didn't have an existing wifi network. Similarly, when taken to a third location that didn't have wifi, the EEE PC and MiFi got along swimmingly. My current theory is that the existing wifi networks and the wifi leg of the MiFi unit are on the same channel and competing with one another. Perhaps the MacBook Pro has the capability to overcome this interference, while the EEE PC doesn't.

Sampling the process points back to the MAMP mysqld.. wtf?! About to throw MAMP out the window and boot up a VM of CentOS =)

• PC -> TV HDMI suddenly doesn't work, any other option does

  So my parents wanted to connect their PC to their TV, so they bought a 10m (35 ft) cable. It all worked perfectly. Then my mom tripped over the cable, breaking it. She somehow got a free replacement, but at the same time some more expensive one from an uncle. Now the problem is that this suddenly doesn't work anymore (TV saying "Format not supported"). I've tried several other things to pinpoint the actual problem, but none brought me something conslusive: PC (hdmi) to TV doesn't work (both cables) PC (hdmi) to TV doesn't work (short cable) Laptop (hdmi) to TV work (same cables) BluRay (hdmi) to TV works (same cables) PC (hdmi) to monitor works (same cables) PC (DVI w/ adapter HDMI) to TV works (same cables) I've tried different ports, tried Linux, reinstalling drivers (the graphics card is internal using an i5 sandy bridge. Normally it's running Windows 7 Home Prem, the TV being a Philips 37PFL7605H). So basically, everything works, except that thing what we want. The only things I am thinking of is that the sound is interfering or that the HDMI-output is somehow broken. Or is it anything else? I'm kind of lost.

  When we downloaded Xcode 4.5.1, to test applications in older simulators we installed it from Settings->Downloads->Components Now there is Xcode 4.5.2 available. Again we need to download simulators for that Xcode ? or is there any location where those simulators stored similar to Documentation. In 2nd image below we can see location for documentation but in 1st image selecting simulator doesn't show any location of installation. Any idea ?

  I installed KeepassX on my new Mac which I am still learning the ropes on. I downloaded the program to allow autofill on Chrome ( KeePassHttp.plgx ). It says it needs to be put into directory of KeepassX, but I can't drag it into the application file and I'm not sure yet how to manipulate Terminal. Is terminal what I need to use or is there another way to put it in directory? At this point it is on the Chrome interface, but says it can't detect or make a connection with KX

• Windows 8.1 will not boot after upgrading from Windows 8 on my PC

  I have not found a fix. After running the Windows 8.1 Update from the store my computer will not boot unless In insert my recovery USB drive and try to repair. (The repair fails.) However after I power of the PC and remove the USB drive. The PC will boot correctly once. I would leave the PC on but it shuts it self off at night. (And yes I have checked my power profile, it is set to never.) The only thing I have found online is a possibly corrupt video driver. I uninstalled the video driver reboot and it did not fix the issue. Anybody have any suggestions? The PC is a HP EliteBook 8730w laptop. I had no issues with Windows 8 or the Windows 8.1 preview.

• Seeing double-cursor in 'recursive RDP'

  I'm using a Virtual PC VM on my PC to connect to a remote PC using RDP over a VPN. It works just fine except that in the RDP session, I often see a double mouse cursor... I get a standard mouse-arrow and the context-specific cursor such as a caret or hourglass. It's not a big problem but rather annoying and I wondered if there's any way to fix it, or at least understand where it comes from? Is it because I'm effectively running one RDP session from inside another? My host PC runs W7, my local VM runs XP, and the remote PC access using RDP is W7. Thankyou for any help.

• Windows 7 pc freezes for an indeterminate amount of time after unlocking

  Not sure if this type of question is appropriate for this forum, but I've tried everything I can think of to solve this problem aside from format/reinstall. I recently got a new work PC (Dell optiplex 755) with windows 7 professional x64. Standard developer software installed for .net development: VS2008, VS2005, SQL management studio, office 2007, etc. Recently I've been having this weird problem where after I lock my pc, when I try to unlock it, the screen will be black for awhile after unlocking. I can ctl+alt+del and put my password in but then it just goes black. The amount of time on the black screen seems to be related to the amount of time I am away from my PC. If only away a few minutes, it'll take about a minute to get to the desktop. If away for an hour, could take up to 15 minutes. If I lock it and go home for the night, I have to restart my PC in the morning (I've let it sit for an hour after a night of being locked and nothing happened). It doesn't do it every time but definitely the majority of the time. One weird thing I've seen is that if I remote into my machine before trying to log back in it does not do it. I uninstalled all software back to the point when I remember it started happening and it still does it. I was using this PC for a few weeks without this problem happening at all. Anyone know what my next troubleshooting steps could be? My IT department tried to fix it by moving my old profile to another disk and having me log in, effectively recreating a profile from scratch but that didn't solve it. As I said above if this isn't the right forum for these types of questions please let me know. Thanks in advance!

  I use SVN for my work at home and office, but I usually forget to commit the changes before shutdown. Therefore, I wish I could turn on my home/office PC at office/home. I already have TeamViewer installed on both PCs, so it will be okay as soon as the power is turned on. I have read many articles about this, I found both my PC and office computers support Wake-on-LAN. However, I don't know much about other config. And I need to turn on my computers through the Internet, not on LAN. My office Internet connection has static IP, however, my home Internet connection has dynamic IP, it changes as soon as I reset the modem, but it is not a big problem, I rarely turn the Internet modem off. And I don't have privilege to config office Internet connection, but I have Administration privilege on both PCs. Please give me details steps to turn on my office PC from home, and turn on my home PC from office.

• MacPorts on mountain lion - cannot install apache2 due to gettext package

  I have been having problem with installing gettext package from macports. When I am launching /opt/local/bin/port -v install apache2 it checks dependencies, and continues with gettext package installation. But the configure process freezes here: checking for egrep... /usr/bin/grep -E and nothing happens.. can wait hours, nothing changes. I tried to configure, make, make install manually for that package and it went all fine. But, when same configure is launched by ports, it hangs there. Question: 1) How can that be fixed? 2) Maybe I can somehow manually tell ports, that I installed that gettext package manually already? Sorry, if wrong "site" for this question. Felt most proper one.

• running a command line app with sudo and password automatically on start up OS X (Lion)

  I need to run an app at startup/login on my mac. I want it to launch in the background and start doing it's work without interrupting me or me having to start it up because I invariably forget and then when I need it, it wasn't running! I have tried using applescript to tell terminal to run it and type my password in, but it ends up opening multiple Terminal windows and not working. Ideally I need a script that I can just add to the user login items and it will run for me. The app has no way of taking a password argument either and it has a password as well as the sudo! I need a solution that can either be done as an applescript (which can be made into an executable) or i need a commandline script but I have no idea about them. This is the manual code I type >sudo serverStatus >password:123456 >password:serverpass Not sure if this is the right stack to ask, but I have no idea now and it's above my head! For example if I try git --version followed by entry keyboard typing, a blank line appear and wait until ever.   I have seen that there are a lot of threads about this problem. I had Windows 8 installed on my series 3 samsung i5 computer and I tried to install ubuntu 13.04. This is what I did: Because of the secure boot I can't install ubuntu from the dvd. So I went in the bios and disabled secure boot and enabled ''CSM''. I went out of the bios and windows 8 couldn't boot more. So I follow a guide on this thread ( Installing on a Pre-Installed Windows 8 System (UEFI Supported) ) and on ubuntu I tried to repair the boot by inserting this code in the terminal: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:yannubuntu/boot-repair sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install boot-repair Then I ran boot-repair and I follow all the steps. Then I reboot the sistem and saw the black screen that says: error: file '/boot/grub/i386-pc/normal mod' not found grub rescure> Now I saw a lot of guides about this problem but I can't understand how to reistall ubuntu trough the live dvd that I used to install it the first time... I put it in the computer but nothing appears.. so what should I do now? I'm a noob on ubuntu and I have read all the things about this grub 2 install and know where the problem comes from but how to start the dvd??

• Fresh install of Ubuntu 12.10 won't boot on Asus X101CH Eee PC

  I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.10 in my Asus X101CH Eee PC, using a live usb which I made using startup disk creator, replacing Ubuntu 12.04. The installation ran smoothly, but when I boot, it goes to a purple screen for a second, then a lot of text like the following shows up in sequence: Starting crash report submission daemon [OK] Starting CPU interrupts balancing daemon [OK] Stopping save kernel messages [OK] _ And the cursor just keeps blinking for hours. I can't log in. Pressing Alt + F2 did not bring me to console mode. I thought it might be a partition problem so I formatted the whole disk, by creating a new partition table using gparted in Ubuntu 12.04 live USB. I noticed that I can't try Ubuntu using 12.10 live USB either; it just went to a blank screen when I hit the 'try ubuntu' button. But the same problem arose. I even changed the pen drive for the live USB a couple of times. I happened to know that the Intel Atom N2600 Cedar Trail CPU in my computer is not well supported in Linux, I managed to install its drivers in Ubuntu 12.04, although the computer went blank during the installation.
