• Introducing Sreelatha Doma, Guest Author

  I'm very pleased to welcome Sreelatha Doma to this blog's panel of guest authors.  Sreelatha Doma is a Principal Engineer - Database Administration in the Oracle Applications Technology Integration team, with a current focus on database technology.  She has been with Oracle since October 2005.  She was an EBS technology stack certification engineer for four years, and was involved in various technology product certifications for databases, RAC, browsers, Forms and middleware products. Prior to joining Oracle, she worked as a database administrator and Senior Technical Officer in Electronics and Communications India Limited (ECIL) and the Department of Atomic Energy.  She started her career as a software developer. Sreelatha has been in in the IT industry for over 13 years, and holds a B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering.

• OpenJDK 6 B27 Available

  On October 26, 2012 the source bundle for OpenJDK 6 b27 was published at http://download.java.net/openjdk/jdk6/. The main changes in b27 are the latest round of security updates and a number of other fixes. For more information see the detailed list of all the changes in OpenJDK 6 B27. Test Results: All the jdk regression tests run with  make test passed on linux_i586 cd jdk6 make make test Note: sun/tools/jinfo/Basic.sh test failed on linux_x64. • EBS 11.5.10 Support Exception / 12.1 Extends to Dec 2018

  E-Business Suite 11.5.10 Sustaining Support Exception & 12.1 Extended Support Now to Dec. 2018 [ID 1495337.1] As part of Oracle’s continued commitment to our customers, we will be providing an exception for the first 13 months of Sustaining Support on Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11.5.10 (11i10), valid from December 1, 2013 – December 31, 2014. This exception support will be comprised of three components: (1) new fixes for Severity 1 production issues, (2) United States Form 1099 2013 year-end updates, and (3) payroll regulatory updates for the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and Australia for fiscal years ending in 2014.  In addition, the Extended Support period for E-Business Suite Release 12.1 has been extended through December, 2018. Customers with an active Oracle Premier Support for Software contract will automatically be entitled to Extended Support deliverables for E-Business Suite 12.1. Please refer to the Lifetime Support section of oracle.com for further information regarding Oracle's Lifetime Support Policy for Applications. This change will be reflected in the October update to the Software Technical Support Policies.

• Bring the Windows 8 'Start Menu' back!

  I've been using the the Windows 8 RTM from MSDN for a week but the more of my normal software I load onto the machine the more awkward it becomes using the new 'Metro' (yes I know that name is now not used) 'Start' screen. Yes, you can oraganise your programs in groups, or you can add them to the Quick Launch bar, or you can create alphabetic folders on the desktop but sorry Microsoft, none of these are as logical as the alphabetic Start menu of previous Windows versions.Fortunately the good people at Stardock have a solution in 'Start8', which brings the Start Menu we know and love back to Windows 8. It's still in Beta and the current one runs out in October. I'm looking forward to the final release and like lots of other users, I'll be happy to pay for this.Lets hope Microsoft either reinstate the Start Menu in the first service pack or gives us a usable alternative. • JCP.Next Progress Updates

  JSR 355, JCP Executive Committee Merge, is currently nearing the end of the Public Review period.  Review the current draft here and provide feedback here.  The review closes on 12 June 2012.  The JCP Executive Committee met face to face in Sao Paulo, Brazil earlier in May, and has published a revision (version 2.1) of the EC Standing Rules.  The EC Standing Rules were introduced in October 2011 with the launch of JCP version 2.8 (JSR 348).  Version 2.1 of the EC Standing Rules will modify rules for attendance at EC face-to-face meetings. Remote observers will be permitted in "read-only" mode but unless a member attends in person they will be counted as absent.  The review period for these changes will close on June 30 2012.  Please comment on the proposed changes by logging an issue in the JCP EC issue tracker.

• Did Google Delete my index?

  I have a website that I haven't had much time to take care of. I updated it 4 times since last October, the contents are all original and informative. I can see those cache from Way back Machine and the site was indexed in Yahoo, but not in google. Did I get my index on Google deleted because I did not update it often? Normally Google crawl often and index fast, I just got really worried if I did something wrong. Is it possible that I set something wrong in the hosting or something? Please help me

• Does Ubuntu ever push new versions of GCC into the package repository between releases?

  Current version of GCC in Ubuntu 11.04 is 4.5.2. For certain C++0x features, I need GCC version 4.6, but would like to avoid compiling from source. Is there hope that Ubuntu will update GCC in the package repository before the next release in October (11.10). This question asks a similar thing except for an earlier version of Ubuntu and GCC. A second part of the question, if the answer is "no" to the first, then can I hope to see it appear in Ubuntu's unstable repository?

• Latest Exadata Quarterly Full Stack Patch

  The latest Quarterly Full Stack patch was released on October 17th for Exadata.  This patch contains all of the latest recommended patches for the Exadata Database Machine.  For more details, refer to My Oracle Support Note titled Database Machine and Exadata Storage Server 11g Release 2 (11.2) Supported Versions [888828.1].  Note that the information in the note applies only to Exadata Storage Server Software 11.2.  This note is maintained on a regular basis so bookmark it and use it as reference for the latest Exadata Database Machine patching recommendations.

• Hybrid Columnar Compression

  You heard me in the past talk about the HCC feature for Oracle databases. Hybrid Columnar Compression is a fantastic, built-in, free feature of Oracle 11Gr2. One used to need an Exadata to make use of it. However, last October, Oracle opened it up and now allows it to work on ANY Oracle DB server running 11Gr2, as long as the storage behind it is a ZFSSA for DNFS, or an Axiom for FC. • Should one use the legal "shall" in requirements documents and specification documents? [migrated]

  At least in the US, "will" has replaced "shall" in most every context, with the notable exception of the "legal shall". Shall is used instead of will in legal documents to indicate a sense of obligation or requirement; e.g. "the defendant shall vacate the premises by October 16". In software, requirements documents and specification documents serve close to the same purpose as the aforementioned legal documents; does this mean shall should be used in a similar fashion as a result?

  Next week I will be in Brussels attending a policy dialog held at the European Policy Centre on Thursday October 11th. It is titled "The Accessibility Act – ensuring access to goods and services across the EU", and I will be part of a distinguished panel exploring some of the issues the upcoming European Accessibility Act may address - with a particular emphasis in my case on the role of ICT accessibility. This morning policy dialog will be followed by a more focused workshop in the afternoon looking at specific challenges and potential solutions to those challenges.   Nominations are now open for the 2012 JCP Awards. Submit nominations to PMO at JCP dot ORG or use this form.  The Java Community Process (JCP) program celebrates success. Members of the community nominate worthy participants, Spec Leads, and Java Specification Requests (JSRs) in order to cheer on the hard work and creativity that produces ground-breaking results for the community and industry in the Java Standard Edition (SE), Java Enterprise Edition (EE), or Java Micro Edition (ME) platforms. The community gets together every year at the JavaOne conference to applaud in person the winners of three awards: JCP Member/Participant of the Year, Outstanding Spec Lead, and Most Significant JSR. This year’s unveiling will occur Tuesday evening, 2 October, at the Annual JCP Community Party held in San Francisco during JavaOne. Nominations close on 16 July 2012.
