How do I choose what and when to cache data with ob_start rather than query the database?

I have a home page that has several independent dynamic parts. The parts consist of a list of recent news from the company, a site statistics panel, and the online status of certain employees. The recent news changes monthly, site statistics change daily, and online statuses change on a per minute bases. I would like to cache these panels so that the db is not hit on every page load. Is using ob_start() then ob_get_contents() to cache these parts to a file the correct way to do this or is there a better method in PHP5 for doing this? In asking this question I'm trying to answer these additional questions: How can I determine the correct approach for caching this data without doing extensive benchmarking? Does it make sense to cache these parts in different files and then join them together per requests or should I re-query the data and cache once per minute? I'm looking for a rule of thumb for planning pages and for situations where doing testing is not cost effective (The client is not paying enough for it I mean). Thanks!

php.ini modifications has no effect on joomla

I have a netbook with a recently installed ubuntu server 12.04 64-bit. I have (only) installed Joomla on it (version 2.5) and now I am trying to tweak the php.ini settings so I can install jomsocial onto joomla. I have changed these settings: upload_max_filesize = 2M post_max_size = 8M to this: upload_max_filesize = 20M post_max_size = 20M in all php.ini-files in my system. Thats six files, found using 'locate': /etc/php5/apache2/php.ini /etc/php5/cli/php.ini /usr/share/doc/php5-common/examples/php.ini-development /usr/share/php5/php.ini-production /usr/share/php5/php.ini-production-dist /usr/share/php5/php.ini-production.cli I have double-checked that these files actually contain the new settings. Still, joomla does not recognize the new settings, stating that upload_max_filesize is still only 2M and post_max_size is still only 8M The same is true after a complete restart of the server. What am I doing wrong here?

How can I install both mod-perl2 and mod-php5 on Ubuntu?

From Ubuntu's package libary, I find the two modules I need. However: mod-perl2 requires apache2-mpm-worker mod-php5 requires apache2-mpm-prefork The two apache modules are mutually exclusive and ask me to un-install the other in order to install each. Which means I can't get a server running with both mod-perl2 and mod-php5. Any help greatly appreciated.

I am getting a 400 Bad Request error when using Nginx and PHP-FPM, why?

I am trying to run a website (that requires PHP - it technically doesn't require MySQL at this time, but it may sometime in the near future as I continue developing it, so I went ahead and installed that as well) using nginx 1.2.4 and PHP-FPM 5.3.3 on Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS. As far as I know, I haven't done anything wrong, but clearly something is not quite right - I seem to be getting a 400 Bad Request error whenever I try to browse to my website. I've been mostly following one guide, and I've done more or less everything it recommends, except for not setting up PHP-FPM to use a Unix Socket and I used service as opposed to /etc/init.d/ when starting/stopping nginx, PHP, and MySQL. Although, the only thing I've changed in either of the two files was in php.ini, where I set expose_php to off so as to hide the .php file extension from users. What can I do to resolve my issue? Improving HTML scrapper efficiency with pcntl_fork()

With the help from two previous questions, I now have a working HTML scrapper that feeds product information into a database. What I am now trying to do is improve efficiently by wrapping my brain around with getting my scrapper working with pcntl_fork. If I split my php5-cli script into 10 separate chunks, I improve total runtime by a large factor so I know I am not i/o or cpu bound but just limited by the linear nature of my scraping functions. If so, what is the best way to limit the amount of processes to say 10, and again 1,000 urls as an example split the child work load to 100 products per child (10 x 100). 2) I've learn that pcntl_fork creates a copy of the process and all variables, classes, etc. What I would like to do is replace my hrefArray variable with a DOMDocument query that builds the list of products to scrape, and then feeds them off to child processes to do the processing - so spreading the load across 10 child workers. Enable fastcgi on SSL Virtualhost

Debian 7.5 My VirtualHost for port 80 works fine with the ifmodule for fastcgi. However, it does not work with the VirtualHost for port 443. SSL/https:// was working fine until I added the following: <IfModule mod_fastcgi.c> AddHandler php5-fcgi .php Action php5-fcgi /php5-fcgi Alias /php5-fcgi /usr/lib/cgi-bin/php5-fcgi FastCgiExternalServer /usr/lib/cgi-bin/php5-fcgi -socket /var/run/php5-fpm.sock -pass-header Authorization </IfModule> When I try to restart Apache I get an error: Reloading web server config: apache2 failed! However, if I remove the FastCgiExternalServer line, it works.

What permissions / ownership to set on PHP Sessions Folder when running FastCGI / PHP-FPM (as user "nobody")?

Please verify that the current setting of session.save_path is correct (/var/lib/php/session) in Unknown on line 0" while reading upstream" Obviously this is a permission issue; my session folder's owner/group is the webserver's user, NGINX. PHP-FPM runs as nobody though, and hence adding it to the nginx group is not so trivial. A temporary solution is to set the permissions of /var/lib/php/session to 777 - I have a feeling that's not the "best practice" though. What is the best practice when you need to assign a daemon write access to a folder, but it is running as nobody ?

Ubuntu 10.04 hung on unattended apt-get upgrade?

I'm looking into why our ubuntu web server hung this morning and see that there was some package upgrades a few hours prior to the problem. I was able to ssh into the system and get a snapshot from top: top - 08:13:54 up 210 days, 8:25, 2 users, load average: 433.30, 422.40, 375.70 Tasks: 1192 total, 381 running, 810 sleeping, 0 stopped, 1 zombie Cpu(s): 0.5%us, 6.1%sy, 0.0%ni, 93.4%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Mem: 49549772k total, 48518392k used, 1031380k free, 960152k buffers Swap: 11595768k total, 279368k used, 11316400k free, 39355664k cached This is a 16 processor system, so I would typically expect a load in the low teens. I tried to restart apache, which didn't work, and subsequently had to do a hard reboot to get it working again (which it is). One thing I found was that the server did an unattended package update. Is it possible that upgrading php or curl (which our web sites use) might have caused apache to stop responding? Weird vps server issue

I have an unmanaged linux vps Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot). I have LNMP installed. Also php-fpm php-apc, varnish, memcache. I have (or rather had) several live sites on it. under normal load the server uses ~700 mb memory. But since last night its using only 20mb~ memory and a lot of the services seems to be down (according to htop) I only see nginx working and mysql starts up and goes does every few minutes on a loop. Is there any convenience method that allows me to concatenate two Doctrine ArrayCollection()? something like: $collection1 = new ArrayCollection(); $collection2 = new ArrayCollection(); $collection1->add($obj1); $collection1->add($obj2); $collection1->add($obj3); $collection2->add($obj4); $collection2->add($obj5); $collection2->add($obj6); $collection1->concat($collection2); // $collection1 now contains {$obj1, $obj2, $obj3, $obj4, $obj5, $obj6 } I just want to know if I can save me iterating over the 2nd collection and adding each element one by one to the 1st collection. Google maps api v3 refreshing away markers

Hi, I am having problems with the google maps API V3. It seems that every time I load my page the maps load (including the markers) and then it does a quick reload and removes all the markers. Am I missing somehting? What am I doing wrong? 500 - An error has occurred! DB function reports no errors when adding new article in Joomla!

I have an article that I want to publish on my Joomla! site. Every time I click apply or save. I get error 500 - An error has occurred! DB function reports no errors. I have no idea why this error comes up, al I can think is that it's a server error. I'm using TinyMCE to type articles together with Joomla! 1.5.11. Updated: I turned on Maximum error reporting in Joomla! and in the article manager I tried to save the article and got these couple of errors. Please check screenshot I tried adding <?php ini_set('error_reporting', E_ALL); error_reporting(E_ALL); ini_set('log_errors',TRUE); ini_set('html_errors',TRUE); ini_set('display_errors',true); ?> at the top of the index.php pages for Joomla! but it does not show any errors. I checked the error logs on the server and also no errors come up. I managed to publish the article via phpMyAdmin but then something else happens. I try to access to article from the front end, by clicking on the link to the article, but only a blank page comes up. This is really weird, since the error log does not show any information. So I assume the error needs to be coming from Joomla! Hello all, I recently setup a server using the latest version of XAMPP for Windows. With it came PHP 5.3. I'm now looking for a memcache.dll file that works with PHP 5.3 I've used some of the previous .dll files and recieved an error message: "PHP Startup: memcache: Unable t initialize module. Module compiled with module API=20060613 PHP compiled with module api=20090626 These options need to match" Any links to a PHP 5.3 memcache.dll file would be greatly appreciated. "Admin module" taking over [Yii framework]

Hi I have an "admin" module and I want it to serve "dynamic controllers", i.e. to provide a default behaviour for controllers which don't really exist ("virtual controllers"). I've invented a lightweight messaging mechanism for loose communication between modules. I'd like to use it such that when e.g. ?r=admin/users/index is requested, it will call the "virtual controller" "UserController" of AdminModule, which would, by default, use this messaging mechanism to notify the real module "UsersModule" it can answer to the request. I thought about simulating this behaviour in AdminModule::init(), but at that point I have no way of deciding whether the action can be processed by a real controller or not, or at least I don't know how to do it. This is because of the way Yii works: bottom-up, the controller is the one that renders the view AND the application layout (or the module's, if it exists), for example. I don't think the module even has a word to say about handling a given controller+action or not. To recap, I'm looking for a kind of CWebModule::missingController($controllerId,$actionId), just like CController::missingAction($actionId), or a workaround to simulate that. That would possibly be in CWebModule::init() or somewhere where I can find out whether the controller actually exists, in which case it's his job to handle it the $actionID and $controllerID whether the module $controllerID exists (I didn't type it wrong, in r=admin/users/index, "users" is the actual module, as specified in the application's config).

use stream_socket_client to retrieve 2 remote files at the same time

I have a script in PHP which retrieves two very similar files and performs some tasks on the data then outputs a result. I'm currently using curl and getting one, processing it, then getting the other and processing it. I want to switch to stream_socket_client as I've heard you can retrieve both files at the same time and do the processing once they have been retrieved but I am unsure how to do this.

Browser not loading Php pages

Im using a linux machine, and I followed the instructions seen on http://jm2.php.net/manual/en/install.php to setup php, apache and my sql. I did exactly what it said and nothing more, but when I try to open a .php file with firefox or chrome, it downloads...? Im following a tutorial on learning php seen here: http://devzone.zend.com/node/view/id/625 Is there something im not doing or doing wrong? All answers are appreciated.

How can i handle a form submit using REAL OOP in PHP

Im used to java and creating UML.. and i was wondering how can PHP be OOP, the objects live only until you make a request.. then they destroy, so if im using a database is useless to create a class and add the members (variables) to the class, they will be useless.. i cant pass the main system object from one page to another, or similar so how can PHP be compare to jave? you never do OOP .. i mean REAL OOP.. not creating classes , in fact your index will be a procedural file with some object instance and then ? how about if i make a html form and i want to submit the data.. i have to call a file which is not a class is a php procedural file were i grab the submited data with POST, from that file you will instance a class and do some logic there.. but for me thats not pure OOP.. can somebody point me to the right way of OOP using a form submit example ? Thanks!

What's slowing for loops/assignment vs. C?

I have a collection of PHP scripts that are extremely CPU intensive, juggling millions of calculations across hundreds of simultaneous users. I'm trying to find a way to speed up the internals of PHP variable assignment, and looping sequences vs C. Although PHP is obviously loosely typed, is there any way/extension to specifically assign type (assign, not cast, which seems even more expensive) in a C-style fashion? Here's what I mean. This is some dummy code in C: #include <stdio.h> int main() { unsigned long add=0; for(unsigned long x=0;x<100000000;x++) { add = x*59328409238; } printf("x is %ld\n",add); } Pretty self-explanatory -- it loops 100 million times, multiples each iteration by an arbitrary number of some 59 billion, assigns it to a variable and prints it out. On my Macbook, compiling it and running it produced: lees-macbook-pro:Desktop lee$ time ./test2 x is 5932840864471590762 real 0m0.266s user 0m0.253s sys 0m0.002s Pretty darn fast!
