  • Ruby daemons and frequency

    - by mplacona
Hi, I've written this ruby daemon, and was wondering if somebody could have a look at it, and tell me if the approach I've taken is correct. #!/usr/bin/env ruby require 'logger' # You might want to change this ENV["RAILS_ENV"] ||= "production" require File.dirname(__FILE__) + "/../../config/environment" $running = true Signal.trap("TERM") do $running = false end service = Post.new('http://feed.com/feeds') logger = Logger.new('reader.log') while($running) do # Log my calls logger.info "Run at #{Time.now}" service.update_from_feed_continuously # only run it every 5 minutes or so sleep 300 end I feel like this last loop is not quite the right thing to do, and can be memory intensive, but I'm not sure. Also, the 5 minutes seem to never happen exactly every 5 minutes, and I'll see variations of 4-6 minutes. thanks in advance

  • Ruby Summer of Code Project Ideas

    - by blatyo
So, I'm thinking about applying for Ruby Summer of Code. However, I'm not sure what I want to propose. I was wondering if any of my fellow redditors had any good ideas? I've been programming in Ruby for about 3 years. I am primarily a web developer, but I do things related to bit torrent, data mining, and databases as well. I have a bit torrent related gem that I wrote for the hell of it. I've also got some projects on Github (username: blatyo). I am looking for ideas for me, but anything you can think of that would be awesome I would like to hear as well.

  • Curl Certificate Error when Using RVM to install Ruby 1.9.2

    - by Will Dennis
RVM is running into a certificate error when trying to download ruby 1.9.2. It looks like curl is having a certificate issue but I am not sure how to bypass it. NAy help would be great. • Python vs Ruby Top Sites

    - by Steve
Hi, I was just trying to find some comparison of the existing python web frameworks and ruby frameworks. There are few promising frameworks in python but I was not able to find a top 100 site using python except for google, which uses python extensively. Python has great frameworks but I am not able to find a really popular sites using python. Definitely most of the site would use python for background processing and stuff. On the other hand, ruby on rails has a few sites like twitter, hulu, yellowpages, scribd are present in top 100 sites. Can you mention some really popular sites using either of these languages.

  • Does RVM "failover" to another ruby instance on error?

    - by JohnMetta
Have a strange problem in that I have a Rake task that seems to be using multiple versions of Ruby. When one fails, it seems to try another one. Details MacBook running 10.6.5 rvm 1.1.0 Rubies: 1.8.7-p302, ree-1.8.7-2010.02, ruby-1.9.2-p0 Rake 0.8.7 Gem 1.3.7 Veewee (provisioning Virtual Machines using Opcode.com, Vagrant and Chef) I'm not entirely sure the specific details of the error matter, but since it might be an issue with Veewee itself. So, what I'm trying to do is build a new box base on a veewee definition. The command fails with an error about a missing method- but what's interesting is how it fails. Errors I managed to figure out that if I only have one Ruby installed with RVM, it just fails. If I have more than one Ruby install, it fails at the same place, but execution seems to continue in another interpreter. Here are two different clipped console outputs. I've clipped them for size. The full outputs of each error are available as a gist. One Ruby version installed Here is the command run when I only have a single version of Ruby (1.8.7) available in RVM boudica:veewee john$ rvm rake build['mettabox'] --trace rvm 1.1.0 by Wayne E. Seguin ([email protected]) [http://rvm.beginrescueend.com/] (in /Users/john/Work/veewee) ** Invoke build (first_time) ** Execute build … creating new harddrive rake aborted! undefined method `max_vdi_size' for #<VirtualBox::SystemProperties:0x102d6af80> /Users/john/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p302/gems/virtualbox-0.8.3/lib/virtualbox/abstract_model/dirty.rb:172:in `method_missing' <------ stacktraces cut ----------> /Users/john/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p302/gems/rake-0.8.7/bin/rake:31 /Users/john/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p302@global/bin/rake:19:in `load' /Users/john/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p302@global/bin/rake:19 Multiple Ruby Versions Here is the same command run with three versions of Ruby available in RVM. Prior to doing this, I used "rvm use 1.8.7." Again, I don't know how important the details of the specific errors are- what's interesting to me is that there are three separate errors- each with it's own stacktrace- and each in a different Ruby interpreter. Look at the bottom of each stacktrace and you'll see that they are all sourced from different interpreter locations- First ree-1.8.7, then ruby-1.8.7, then ruby-1.9.2: boudica:veewee john$ rvm rake build['mettabox'] --trace rvm 1.1.0 by Wayne E. Seguin ([email protected]) [http://rvm.beginrescueend.com/] (in /Users/john/Work/veewee) ** Invoke build (first_time) ** Execute build … creating new harddrive rake aborted! undefined method `max_vdi_size' for #<VirtualBox::SystemProperties:0x1059dd608> /Users/john/.rvm/gems/ree-1.8.7-2010.02/gems/virtualbox-0.8.3/lib/virtualbox/abstract_model/dirty.rb:172:in `method_missing' … /Users/john/.rvm/gems/ree-1.8.7-2010.02/gems/rake-0.8.7/bin/rake:31 /Users/john/.rvm/gems/ree-1.8.7-2010.02@global/bin/rake:19:in `load' /Users/john/.rvm/gems/ree-1.8.7-2010.02@global/bin/rake:19 (in /Users/john/Work/veewee) ** Invoke build (first_time) ** Execute build isofile ubuntu-10.04.1-server-amd64.iso is available ["a1b857f92eecaf9f0a31ecfc39dee906", "30b5c6fdddbfe7b397fe506400be698d"] [] Last good state: -1 Current step: 0 last good state -1 destroying machine+disks (re-)executing step 0-initial-a1b857f92eecaf9f0a31ecfc39dee906 VBoxManage: error: Machine settings file '/Users/john/VirtualBox VMs/mettabox/mettabox.vbox' already exists VBoxManage: error: Details: code VBOX_E_FILE_ERROR (0x80bb0004), component Machine, interface IMachine, callee nsISupports Context: "CreateMachine(bstrSettingsFile.raw(), name.raw(), osTypeId.raw(), Guid(id).toUtf16().raw(), FALSE , machine.asOutParam())" at line 247 of file VBoxManageMisc.cpp rake aborted! undefined method `memory_size=' for nil:NilClass /Users/john/Work/veewee/lib/veewee/session.rb:303:in `create_vm' /Users/john/Work/veewee/lib/veewee/session.rb:166:in `build' /Users/john/Work/veewee/lib/veewee/session.rb:560:in `transaction' /Users/john/Work/veewee/lib/veewee/session.rb:163:in `build' /Users/john/Work/veewee/Rakefile:87 /Users/john/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p302/gems/rake-0.8.7/lib/rake.rb:636:in `call' /Users/john/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p302/gems/rake-0.8.7/lib/rake.rb:636:in `execute' /Users/john/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p302/gems/rake-0.8.7/lib/rake.rb:631:in `each' … /Users/john/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p302/gems/rake-0.8.7/bin/rake:31 /Users/john/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p302@global/bin/rake:19:in `load' /Users/john/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.8.7-p302@global/bin/rake:19 (in /Users/john/Work/veewee) ** Invoke build (first_time) ** Execute build isofile ubuntu-10.04.1-server-amd64.iso is available ["a9c4ab3257e1da3479c984eae9905c2a", "30b5c6fdddbfe7b397fe506400be698d"] [] Last good state: -1 Current step: 0 last good state -1 (re-)executing step 0-initial-a9c4ab3257e1da3479c984eae9905c2a VBoxManage: error: Machine settings file '/Users/john/VirtualBox VMs/mettabox/mettabox.vbox' already exists VBoxManage: error: Details: code VBOX_E_FILE_ERROR (0x80bb0004), component Machine, interface IMachine, callee nsISupports Context: "CreateMachine(bstrSettingsFile.raw(), name.raw(), osTypeId.raw(), Guid(id).toUtf16().raw(), FALSE , machine.asOutParam())" at line 247 of file VBoxManageMisc.cpp rake aborted! undefined method `memory_size=' for nil:NilClass /Users/john/Work/veewee/lib/veewee/session.rb:303:in `create_vm' /Users/john/Work/veewee/lib/veewee/session.rb:166:in `block in build' /Users/john/Work/veewee/lib/veewee/session.rb:560:in `transaction' /Users/john/Work/veewee/lib/veewee/session.rb:163:in `build' /Users/john/Work/veewee/Rakefile:87:in `block in <top (required)>' /Users/john/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.2-p0/lib/ruby/1.9.1/rake.rb:634:in `call' /Users/john/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.2-p0/lib/ruby/1.9.1/rake.rb:634:in `block in execute' … /Users/john/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.2-p0/lib/ruby/1.9.1/rake.rb:2013:in `top_level' /Users/john/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.2-p0/lib/ruby/1.9.1/rake.rb:1992:in `run' /Users/john/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.2-p0/bin/rake:35:in `<main>' It isn't until we reach the last installed version of Ruby that execution halts. Discussion Does anyone have any idea what's going on here? Has anyone seen this "failover"-like behavior before? It seems strange to me that the first exception would not halt execution as it did with one interpreter, but I wonder if there are things happening when RVM is installed that we Ruby developers are not considering.

  • Advice on HTTPS connections using Ruby on Rails

    - by user502052
Since I am developing a "secure" OAuth protocol for my RoR3 apps, I need to send protected information over the internet, so I need to use HTTPS connections (SSL/TSL). I read How to Cure Net::HTTP’s Risky Default HTTPS Behavior aticle that mentions the 'always_verify_ssl_certificates' gem, but, since I want to be more "pure" (it means: I do not want to install other gems, but I try to do everything with Ruby on Rails) as possible, I want to do that work without installing new gems. I read about 'open_uri' (it is also mentioned in the linked article: "open_uri is a common exception - it gets things right!") that is from the Ruby OOPL and I think it can do the same work. So, for my needs, is 'open_uri' the best choice (although it is more complicated of 'always_verify_ssl_certificates' gem)? If so, can someone help me using that (with an example, if possible) because I have not found good guides about?

  • Ruby from the command line - sticking - Windows

    - by tyndall
I have seen this behavior on Windows with Ruby for a long time. If I install a gem sometimes the command line will just get "lost" and stop printing output until you go back to the command line and hit enter a few times. I notice this in other places too. Like starting up a Ruby on Rails console. Or generating a model with Rails. Have other people seen this? What causes this? The weird thing is this doesn't happen all the time. I have never seen this with PHP, Lua, Perl or Python from the command line. I have seen this on Vista and Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit). This happens on multiple machines.

  • Why is ruby called a dsl?

    - by b_ayan
Recently, when I tried to explain why Ruby is a DSL to an intern at my organisation, I was not able to articulate my reasonings to the effect I would like to. Maybe I do not understand the space well enough to teach the nuances. Redirecting him to Martin Fowler' article or the google ranked one InfoQ or other material has not helped much either. Can some explain why Ruby is a DSL with an example / parallel situation which is not voodoo stuff for someone who is fairly new to the world of code? Understanding the ideology might also help in elaborating the intricacies of the rails ecosystem?

  • Ruby equivalent of PHP's fopen() method

    - by lagrz
I'm trying to find out if Ruby has en equivalent of php's fopen() method currently used like this: $fd = fopen("php://stdin", "r"); would that be using ARGV variable? Basically what I plan on doing is forward raw e-mail messages using the .procmailrc file which I already got working in a test php file, but the project requires the use of Ruby. Therefore I'm not 100% sure if using the ARGV variable would work or if somehow I need to capture the e-mail stream by some other means. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

  • Limitations in running Ruby/Rails on windows

    - by johnc
In the installation documentation to RoR it mentions that there are many limitations to running Ruby on Rails on Windows, and in some cases, whole libraries do not work. How bad are these limitations, should I always default to Linux to code / run RoR, and is Iron Ruby expected to fix these limitations or are they core to the OS itself? EDIT Thanks for the answer around installation and running on Linux, but I am really trying to understand the limitations in functionality as referenced in the installation documentation, and non-working libraries - I am trying to find a link to the comment, but it was referenced in an installation read me when I installed the msi package I think

Many thanks, Galen

  • Ruby email_veracity_checker getting Recipient OK for invalid emails

    - by digger69
I was testing out email_veracity_checker from rails console and found that when I tested a google apps domain (w/ catchall), yahoo and another company domain, the smtp server always returned 250 recipient ok for invalid emails (wellformed, but bogus). It seems that these servers are always returning OK perhaps to prevent email harvesting. But it does seem to raise the question 'why even validate up-front', is this approach even valid in today's environment? Note: gmail did return 550 email account doesn't exist for invalid. related to How check if an email exist without send in Ruby? Use of email_veracity_checker send-in-ruby-use-of-email-veracity-checker I appreciate your thoughts.

  • Action Mailer Confirmation Emails - Ruby on Rails...

    - by bgadoci
I have successfully installed the Clearance Gem from ThoughtBot. Clearance sends a confirmation email upon a new sign_up and suggests adding: config.action_mailer.default_url_options = { :host => 'localhost:3000' } to your /environments/test.rb and development.rb. I have tried this and also config.action_mailer.default_url_options = { :host => '127.0.0.1', :port => 3000 } But can't seem to get rails to send the email. As I am new to both Ruby and Rails, I am wondering if there is some step/config that ThoughtBot is assuming I have already done to send emails. What am I doing wrong/missing? UPDATE: Just added notifier.rb class Notifier < ActionMailer::Base recipients recipient.email_address_with_name bcc ["[email protected]"] from "[email protected]" subject "New account information" body :account => recipient end end

  • SQL Query in Ruby: Only select the changes

    - by JJ Liu
    Suppose I have a table (PriceHistory) like this, every time I change anything in the row, I will record the whole row again in the table. id | buy_price | sell_price | change_date 1 | 2 | 2 | 2012-06-22 2 | 3 | 2 | 2012-06-20 3 | 2 | 6 | 2012-06-15 4 | 5 | 5 | 2012-06-15 5 | 5 | 7 | 2012-06-15 6 | 4 | 8 | 2012-06-12 I only care about the change of BuyPrice, Is there a way to just select row 1, 2, 3, & 5? Here is the Ruby code I come up with, but it does not only select the changed rows PriceHistory.select("id, BuyPrice, change_date"). order("change_date DESC") Both Ruby and SQL answers are fine.

  • Compressing a hex string in Ruby/Rails

    - by PreciousBodilyFluids
I'm using MongoDB as a backend for a Rails app I'm building. Mongo, by default, generates 24-character hexadecimal ids for its records to make sharding easier, so my URLs wind up looking like: example.com/companies/4b3fc1400de0690bf2000001/employees/4b3ea6e30de0691552000001 Which is not very pretty. I'd like to stick to the Rails url conventions, but also leave these ids as they are in the database. I think a happy compromise would be to compress these hex ids to shorter collections using more characters, so they'd look something like: example.com/companies/3ewqkvr5nj/employees/9srbsjlb2r Then in my controller I'd reverse the compression, get the original hex id and use that to look up the record. My question is, what's the best way to convert these ids back and forth? I'd of course want them to be as short as possible, but also url-safe and simple to convert. Thanks!

  • Solr Vs. Sphinx in a Ruby project

    - by Robert Ross
I have a project that is being written on top of the Grape API framework in ruby. (https://github.com/intridea/grape) The problem I'm having is that Thinking-Sphinx vs. Sunspot (Gems used to interface with each search index) have worlds different benchmarks. View the Benchmark Here We're trying to develop something that is quick and easy to deploy (Solr needs Java). The issues we see right now is mainly that Solr is slower through Sunspot gem and Sphinx is faster through Thinking-Sphinx because Solr is HTTP REST calls where Sphinx is sockets. Anyone have any experience in either and can explain pitfalls / bonuses? Note: Needs to be deployable to Rails AND non-rails apps (Hence Sunspot). Thanks!

Something like Dreamweaver with the ability to browse Objects etc. If I have opened the _show.erb I create a div and selete @user.email. etc. Any suggestions?

  • Python or Ruby for freelance?

    - by Sophia
Hello, I'm Sophia. I have an interest in self-learning either Python, or Ruby. The primary reason for my interest is to make my life more stable by having freelance work = $. It seems that programming offers a way for me to escape my condition of poverty (I'm on the edge of homelessness right now) while at the same time making it possible for me to go to uni. I intend on being a math/philosophy major. I have messed with Python a little bit in the past, but it didn't click super well. The people who say I should choose Python say as much because it is considered a good first language/teaching language, and that it is general-purpose. The people who say I should choose Ruby point out that I'm a very right-brained thinker, and having multiple ways to do something will make it much easier for me to write good code. So, basically, I'm starting this thread as a dialog with people who know more than I do, as an attempt to make the decision. :-) I've thought about asking this in stackoverflow, but they're much more strict about closing threads than here, and I'm sort of worried my thread will be closed. :/ TL;DR Python or Ruby for freelance work opportunities ($) as a first language? Additional question (if anyone cares to answer): I have a personal feeling that if I devote myself to learning, I'd be worth hiring for a project in about 8 weeks of work. I base this on a conservative estimate of my intellectual capacities, as well as possessing motivation to improve my life. Is my estimate necessarily inaccurate? random tidbit: I'm in Portland, OR I'll answer questions that are asked of me, if I can help the accuracy and insight contained within the dialog.

  • Rails Resque workers fail with PGError: server closed the connection unexpectedly

    - by gc
I have site running rails application and resque workers running in production mode, on Ubuntu 9.10, Rails 2.3.4, ruby-ee 2010.01, PostgreSQL 8.4.2 Workers constantly raised errors: PGError: server closed the connection unexpectedly. My best guess is that master resque process establishes connection to db (e.g. authlogic does that when use User.acts_as_authentic), while loading rails app classes, and that connection becomes corrupted in fork()ed process (on exit?), so next forked children get kind of broken global ActiveRecord::Base.connection I could reproduce very similar behaviour with this sample code imitating fork/processing in resque worker. (AFAIK, users of libpq recommended to recreate connections in forked process anyway, otherwise it's not safe ) But, the odd thing is that when I use pgbouncer or pgpool-II instead of direct pgsql connection, such errors do not appear. So, the question is where and how should I dig to find out why it is broken for plain connection and is working with connection pools? Or reasonable workaround?

  • Start or ensure that Delayed Job runs when an application/server restarts.

    - by btelles
Hi there, We have to use delayed_job (or some other background-job processor) to run jobs in the background, but we're not allowed to change the boot scripts/boot-levels on the server. This means that the daemon is not guaranteed to remain available if the provider restarts the server (since the daemon would have been started by a capistrano recipe that is only run once per deployment). Currently, the best way I can think of to ensure the delayed_job daemon is always running, is to add an initializer to our Rails application that checks if the daemon is running. If it's not running, then the initializer starts the daemon, otherwise, it just leaves it be. The question, therefore, is how do we detect that the Delayed_Job daemon is running from inside a script? (We should be able to start up a daemon fairly easily, bit I don't know how to detect if one is already active). Anyone have any ideas? Regards, Bernie Based on the answer below, this is what I came up with. Just put it in config/initializers and you're all set: #config/initializers/delayed_job.rb DELAYED_JOB_PID_PATH = "#{Rails.root}/tmp/pids/delayed_job.pid" def start_delayed_job Thread.new do `ruby script/delayed_job start` end end def process_is_dead? begin pid = File.read(DELAYED_JOB_PID_PATH).strip Process.kill(0, pid.to_i) false rescue true end end if !File.exist?(DELAYED_JOB_PID_PATH) && process_is_dead? start_delayed_job end
