  • How should I structure the implementation of turn-based board game rules?

    - by Setzer22
I'm trying to create a turn-based strategy game on a tilemap. I'm using design by component so far, but I can't find a nice way to fit components into the part I want to ask. I'm struggling with the "game rules" logic. That is, the code that displays the menu, allows the player to select units, and command them, then tells the unit game objects what to do given the player input. The best way I could thing of handling this was using a big state machine, so everything that could be done in a "turn" is handled by this state machine, and the update code of this state machine does different things depending on the state. However, this approach leads to a large amount of code (anything not model-related) going into a big class. Of course I can subdivide this big class into more classes, but it doesn't feel modular and upgradable enough. I'd like to know of better systems to handle this in order to be able to upgrade the game with new rules without having a monstruous if/else chain (or switch / case, for that matter). Any ideas? What specific design pattern other than MVC should I be using?

  • Is "If a method is re-used without changes, put the method in a base class, else create an interface" a good rule-of-thumb?

    - by exizt
A colleague of mine came up with a rule-of-thumb for choosing between creating a base class or an interface. He says: Imagine every new method that you are about to implement. For each of them, consider this: will this method be implemented by more than one class in exactly this form, without any change? If the answer is "yes", create a base class. In every other situation, create an interface. For example: Consider the classes cat and dog, which extend the class mammal and have a single method pet(). We then add the class alligator, which doesn't extend anything and has a single method slither(). Now, we want to add an eat() method to all of them. If the implementation of eat() method will be exactly the same for cat, dog and alligator, we should create a base class (let's say, animal), which implements this method. However, if it's implementation in alligator differs in the slightest way, we should create an IEat interface and make mammal and alligator implement it. He insists that this method covers all cases, but it seems like over-simplification to me. Is it worth following this rule-of-thumb?

  • Design workflows for WF4 in Silverlight

    - by avi1234
Hi, My system is based on activities and I want to give the analysts users the opportunity to create dynamics flows (at runtime). The designer UI based on SL 4.0 . It looks like WorkflowFoundation is the most valuable solution but we didn`t find any WF version that fits to SL (to create the xaml in SL). Any ideas? any other capable engines? Thanks, Hec

  • How to strip out a -D for just one file in a gnu makefile?

    - by WilliamKF
I have '-Wredundant-decls' in my CXXFLAGS but for one file, I want it removed. In my GNU makefile, how can I structure a rule to remove just that part of the CXXFLAGS. I know how to add only for that file, I would do something like this: $O/just_one_file.o: CXXFLAGS += -Wredundant-decls So, ideally I'd do something like this (which doesn't work) to remove it: $O/just_one_file.o: CXXFLAGS -= -Wredundant-decls However, maybe with some $ magic, I can construct some kind of sed or perl script to strip out the -Wredundant-decls and set CXXFLAGS to the stripped value: $O/just_one_file.o: CXXFLAGS = $(shell strip magic here for $CXXFLAGS)

  • how to check an ANTLR token is only used once or less in the parser

    - by Simon Kenyon Shepard
In Antlr, if I have a rule for example: someRule : TOKENA TOKENB; it would accept : "tokena tokenb" if I would like TOKENA to be optional, I can say, someRule : TOKENA* TOKENB; then I can have : "tokena tokenb" or "tokenb" or "tokena tokena tokenb" but this also means it can be repeated more that once. Is there anyway I can say this token can be there 1 or less times but not more than one? so it would accept: "tokena tokenb" or "tokenb" BUT NOT "tokena tokena tokenb"? Many thanks

  • Sort Java List/Map by order in which items are in an XML File

    - by Brandon Smith
Hello everyone, What I'm looking to do is to sorta a Java List or Map in the order the items are in a XML File. For Example I have a list of function names as so: functionOne functionThree functionTwo The XML File looks like this: <xml> <function>functionOne</function> <function>functionTwo</function> <function>functionThree</function> </xml> So I would like to sort the list so the function names are as so: functionOne functionTwo functionThree Now Im trying to do this for Variables as well, so there are around 500+ unique 'items'. Does anyone have any idea how I can go about doing this? Now for the file that determines that sort order doesn't have to be XML it just what I use the most, it can be anything that can get the job done. Thanks in advance for your time.

  • Buisness Rule and Process Management?

    - by elgcom
After some searching in google and wikipedia, I still can not get a clear image about the "difference" between BRMS (Business Rule Management System) and BPM (Business process management)/workflow system. can those two concepts do the same thing from each other? (theoretically) A "rule" can be modeled as a "process" as well. isn't it?

  • How do you partition a USB Thumb / Flash Drive?

    - by Omar Shahine
Out of the box, Windows will not allow you to partition a USB Thumb / Flash Drive. How can you do this? In case anyone is wondering Why you would do this? It's interesting in the case of a BitLocker ToGo drive where you can take a large thumbdrive (like 4 or 8 GB) and format a small amount of the drive to be used normally as a Fat32 drive and leave the remaining partition encrypted using BitLocker. This allows you to keep some non secret data on the unencrypted partition(like portable apps).

  • Is there a rule of thumb for RAM upgrades?

    - by Retrosaur
I'm having a hard time figuring out whether or not a certain laptop/computer's RAM can be upgraded or not. Is there a rule of thumb that determines how much max RAM one could add to a system without looking it up via external websites? A little bit of a background information: I work in computer sales at a computer electronics store, so it is virtually impossible for me to install any sort of software that would detect computer specs, and I get a lot of customers who wonder what laptop/desktop RAM upgrades usually are. Is there a certain rule that adding more RAM entails? Does it make a difference if it's a 32-bit or 64-bit machine? OS?

  • Autoscaling in a modern world&hellip;. Part 2

    - by Steve Loethen
When we last left off, we had a web application spinning away in the cloud, and a local console application watching it and reacting to changes in demand.  Reactions that were specified by a set of rules.  Let’s talk about those rules. Constraints.  The first set of rules this application answered to were the constraints. Here is what they looked like: <constraintRules> <rule name="default" enabled="true" rank="1" description="The default constraint rule"> <actions> <range min="1" max="4" target="AutoscalingApplicationRole"/> </actions> </rule> </constraintRules> Pretty basic.  We have one role, the “AutoscalingApplicationRole”, and we have decided to have it live within a range of 1 to 4.  This rule does not adjust, but instead, set’s limits on what other rules can do.  It has a rank, so you can have you can specify other sets of constraints, perhaps based on time or date, to allow for deviations from this set.  But for now, let’s keep it simple.  In the real world, you would probably use the minimum to set a lower end SLA.  A common value might be a 2, to prevent the reactive rules from ever taking you down to 1 role.  The maximum is often used to keep a rule from driving the cost up, setting an upper limit to prevent you waking up one morning and find a bill for hundreds of instances you didn’t expect.  So, here we have the range we want our application to live inside.  This is good for our investigation and testing.  Next, let’s take a look at the reactive rules.  These rules are what you use to react (hence reactive rules) to changing demands on your application.  The HOL has two simple rules.  One that looks at a queue depth, and one that looks at a performance counter that reports cpu utilization.  the XML in the rules file looks like this: <reactiveRules> <rule name="ScaleUp" rank="10" description="Scale Up the web role" enabled="true"> <when> <any> <greaterOrEqual operand="Length_05_holqueue" than="10"/> <greaterOrEqual operand="CPU_05_holwebrole" than="65"/> </any> </when> <actions> <scale target="AutoscalingApplicationRole" by="1"/> </actions> </rule> <rule name="ScaleDown" rank="10" description="Scale down the web role" enabled="true"> <when> <all> <less operand="Length_05_holqueue" than="5"/> <less operand="CPU_05_holwebrole" than="40"/> </all> </when> <actions> <scale target="AutoscalingApplicationRole" by="-1"/> </actions> </rule> </reactiveRules> <operands> <performanceCounter alias="CPU_05_holwebrole" performanceCounterName="\Processor(_Total)\% Processor Time" source="AutoscalingApplicationRole" timespan="00:05:00" aggregate="Average" /> <queueLength alias="Length_05_holqueue" queue="hol-queue" timespan="00:05:00" aggregate="Average"/> </operands> These rules are currently contained in a file called rules.xml, that is in the root of the console application.  The console app, starts up, grabs the rules and starts watching the 2 operands.  When it detects a rule has been satisfied, it performs the desired action.  (here, scale up or down my 1). But I want to host the autoscaler  in the cloud.  For my first trick, I will move the rules (and another file called services.xml) to azure blob storage.  Look for part 3.

  • Would anyone tell me how to fetch the media:thumb element's attribute from a json feed?

    - by ash
I made a yahoo pipe that pulls up the atoms as json format; however, I can fetch and display all the elements in my html page except for the element's attribute. Would anyone tell me how to fetch the media:thumb element's attribute from a json feed? I am pasting the html page's code with javascript. If you save the html page and then view it in browser, you will see that all the necessary elements get output at html page except for the media:thumb as I cannot display the attribute of media:thumb when the feed is formatted as json. I am also pasting the some portion of the json feed so that you can have an idea what i am talking about. Please tell me how to retrieve attribute from media:thumb element of a json feed by using plain javascript but no server side code or javascript library. • Virtual environment firewall with CSF + iptables rules on VM?

    - by luison
We are getting into virtualization with a Proxmox VE (OpenVZ + KVM) server. Our plan for firewall is to have CSF (http://configserver.com/cp/csf.html) running on the host machine as we've had a reasonable good experience with it in the past. Apart from that we plan simple firewall rules on the VM machines (mostly OpenVZ containers with same kernel) and maybe fail2ban simple specific rules. I would appreciate comments with anyone with similar experiences? I understand all traffic comes via the host machine so a combined firewall there with specific firewalling on the VM should work, alltough some iptables rules are hard to get to work on OpenVZ containers.

  • How do I examine my Windows firewall outbound rules?

    - by David
I need a program to listen to port 9000 on localhost with my Windows firewall. I've created an outgoing and an incoming rule for my program but I can only see my incomming rule in the Windows firewall general menu? I've also noticed that I've many more outgoing rules in my outgoing rule menu but I can only see 4 outgoing rules in my general firewall menu but I see many many more incomming rules? The program doesn't listen to port 9000 or it doesn't working. I've also tried netstat -a -p to no avail. I didn't see 0.0.0.0:9000 in the output? How can I check if my program listen to port 9000 or connect to port 9000 when it's open?

  • How can I specify multiple rules for a particular log file(s) with logrotate?

    - by Ether
I have a logrotate.d config file that looks something like this: /home/myapp/log/* { daily compress dateext ifempty delaycompress olddir /home/myapp/baklog } There are a few particular log files where I want to apply additional rules, such as "mail". How can I apply additional rules to just some files? If I add another rule above that matches the additional files (e.g. /home/myapp/log/warning.log { ... }, I get an error like error: /etc/logrotate.d/myapp:3 duplicate log entry for /home/myapp/log/warning.log. How can I specify multiple rules that match particular files in an overlapping kind of way?

  • Both tab & hover triggered popups problem

    - by carpenter
    I am trying to display divs when hovering over thumb-nails and/or both when tabbing onto them. If I stick to my mouse, the popups seem to work OK - if I start with a tab press I can show the popops also (foward only - no shift + tab yet). Any help getting them to play well together? <script type="text/javascript"> // Note: the below is being run from an onmouseover on a asp:HyperLink at the moment function onhovering_and_tabbingon2() { var active_hover = 0; var num_of_thumb; // set the default focus onto the first thumb-nail and make its popup display document.getElementById('link_no' + active_hover).focus(); // set focus on the first thumb $('#pop' + active_hover).toggleClass('popup'); // show its popup as it is hidden // for when hovering over the thumbs $(".box img").hover( // so as to effect only images/thumb-nails within divs of class=box when hovering over them function () { // test for if the image is a thumb-entry and not a popup image - of class=thumbs2 thumb = $(this).attr('class'); if (thumb != "thumbs2") { // I need to add/toggle the class here to a "div" and not to the image being hovered on, a div with text that corrosponds to the hovered on image though // so grab the number of the thumb_entry - to use to id the div. num_of_thumb = $(this).attr('id').replace('thumb_entry_No', ''); // find the div with id 'pop' + num_of_thumb, and toggleClass on it $('#pop' + num_of_thumb).toggleClass('popup'); // shows the hovered on pic's popup // move the focus to the hovered on pic's a tag ?????? document.getElementById('link_no' + num_of_thumb).focus(); // if the previous popup that was showing was in box2.. if (active_hover == 1 || active_hover% 2 == 1) { $('#pop' + active_hover).toggleClass('popup4_line2'); } else { // remove/toggle the previous active popup's visibility $('#pop' + active_hover).toggleClass('popup'); } // set the new active_hover to num_of_thumb active_hover = num_of_thumb; } }, function () { } ); // same thing again - but for my second row/line of entries/thumb-nails... $(".box2 img").hover( // so as to effect only images/thumbs within divs of class=box2 function () { // test if the image is a thumb-entry and not a popup image thumb = $(this).attr('class'); if (thumb != "thumbs2") { // I need to add the class here to a "div" and not to the image being hovered on, a div that corrosponds to the hovered on image though // so grab the number of the thumb_entry being hovered on, so as to id the div. num_of_thumb = $(this).attr('id').replace('thumb_entry_No', ''); // find the div with id='pop' + num_of_thumb, and toggleClass on it $('#pop' + num_of_thumb).toggleClass('popup4_line2'); // move the focus to the hovered on pic's a tag ?? document.getElementById('link_no' + num_of_thumb).focus(); // if the previous popup that was showing was in box.. // or if the active_hover is even (modulus) if (active_hover == 0 || active_hover % 2 == 0) { $('#pop' + active_hover).toggleClass('popup'); } else { // remove the previous active visible popup $('#pop' + active_hover).toggleClass('popup4_line2'); } // set the new active_hover to num_of_thumb active_hover = num_of_thumb; } }, function () { } ); // todo: I would like to try to show the popups when tabbing through the thumb-nails also // but am lost... document.onkeyup = keypress; // ???? function keypress() { // alert("The key pressed was: " + window.event.keyCode); if (window.event.keyCode == "9") { //alert("The tab key was pressed!"); active_hover = active_hover + 1; // for tabbing into box 2 (odd numbers) if (active_hover == 1 || active_hover % 2 == 1) { // toggle visibility of previous popup $('#pop' + (active_hover - 1)).toggleClass('popup'); // toggle visibility of current popup $('#pop' + active_hover).toggleClass('popup4_line2'); // } else { // for tabbing into box from box2 // toggle visibility of previous popup $('#pop' + (active_hover - 1)).toggleClass('popup4_line2'); // toggle visibility of current popup $('#pop' + active_hover).toggleClass('popup'); // } // ?????? // // if (window.event.keyCode == "shift&9") { } } } } </script>

  • Where is the appropriate place to define inflector rules in CakePHP 1.3?

    - by Daniel Wright
In CakePHP 1.2, custom inflector rules could be defined in a file app/config/inflections.php. This file was removed in CakePHP 1.3. Instead, the documentation prescribes using the Inflector::rules function to load custom inflections. There's adequate documentation of how to define the custom inflections themselves, but the documentation gives no context—where to use Inflector::rules. Should any custom inflections be defined in the bootstrap.php script? At the top of applicable corresponding controllers? Somewhere else? • Is it possible to supply the jQuery Validation plugin with a rules object?

    - by ethagnawl
I took the rules that I'd been using to validate my form and broke them out into a JSON object, hoping to use the same set of rules for client/server validation. So, where I had: $(document.getElementById('new_listing_form')).validate({ rules: { apt: { required: true } } }); I'm attempting to use: var rules_obj = { apt: { required: true } }; $(document.getElementById('new_listing_form')).validate({ rules: rules_obj }); ... and the form is not being validated. Does anyone know if this is possible?

  • Is it legal to develop a game using D&D rules?

    - by Max
For a while now I've been thinking about trying my hand at creating a game similar in spirit and execution to Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale and offshoots. I'd rather not face the full bulk of work in implementing my own RPG system - I'd like to use D&D rules. Now, reading about the subject it seems there is something called "The License" which allows a company to brand a game as D&D. This license seems to be exclusive, and let's just say I don't have the money to buy it :p. Is it still legal for me to implement and release such a game? Commercially or open-source? I'm not sure exactly which edition would fit the best, but since Baldur's Gate is based of 2nd edition, could I go ahead an implement that? in short: what are the issues concerning licensing and publishing when it comes to D&D? Also: Didn't see any similar question...
