• Are Noise-Canceling headphones effective?

  I work in a pretty noisy environment, lots of noise near me like the TV and people yelling and talking in really loud voices. It makes it really hard to concentrate and since I can't really move my PC to another part of the house I was thinking of getting a decent pair of noise-canceling headphones. I've never owned or used a pair before so I wanted to ask, do they block outside noise completely? As in, I'll hear nothing but silence as long as I'm wearing them?

• FreeBSD with 64 CPUs

  I have a quad socket octo-core system running FreeBSD. Currently, I need to turn off HyperThreading to get it to boot, as FreeBSD only supports 32 CPUs. There were some patches made awhile ago against a trunk version of 8.1, but even after modifying them slightly to work and compile with 8.1-RELEASE, the machine wouldn't boot. Has there been any progress here? I can't find much good information about it, Google thinks I'm talking about 64-bit architecture and not literally 64 CPUs.

• Storing millions of URLs in a database for fast pattern matching

  I am developing a web analytics kind of system which needs to log referring URL, landing page URL and search keywords for every visitor on the website. What I want to do with this collected data is to allow end-user to query the data such as "Show me all visitors who came from Bing.com searching for phrase that contains 'red shoes'" or "Show me all visitors who landed on URL that contained 'campaign=twitter_ad'", etc. Because this system will be used on many big websites, the amount of data that needs to log will grow really, really fast. So, my question: a) what would be the best strategy for logging so that scaling the system doesn't become a pain; b) how to use that architecture for rapid querying of arbitrary requests? Is there a special method of storing URLs so that querying them gets faster? In addition to MySQL database that I use, I am exploring (and open to) other alternatives better suited for this task.

• Batch change modified/created dates?

  I recently bought new hard drives for my NAS. This means that I'm copying all the data off the NAS, upgrading it, and then moving the data back. I've gotten as far as copying the data from the NAS, but every file's modified/created date has been changed to when it was copied (today). Is there a way, keeping in mind that I have the original data, to batch update the modified/created dates on the copied files without having to copy them over again (we're talking over a terabyte of data)?

  We have a domain (domain.local) that has IP Addresses in the 10.10.10.* range. In the outbound SMTP server traffic, I see the internal machine name (exchange.domain.local), and the internal ip address (10.10.10.55). The question is, how do you remove this header from exchange, or change it to have the external machine name/ip addresses. I am not talking about the HELO / EHLO handshake as part of the protocol. Please help.

• How can I move windows in Windows with keyboard?

  I recently started using Linux and was floored by the ease with which windows can be moved and resized with simple keyboard combinations using Compiz. If I want to move a terminal to top-right of the screen a simple CTRL+ALT+Numpad9 does the trick for me, and it resizes the window at the same time. I'm sure you guys know what I'm talking about. • Create an image of a CentOS system

  I provide a server (and site) to a client via Rackspace Cloud Hosting, and my client wants to now host the entire thing within his own account. Since it's not possible to just transfer the ownership, I need to somehow create an image of the machine via SSH which I can then use on a new server. Is this possible, and does anyone know of a way of doing this. Note I am talking about virtualised machines here, but I only have access to the virtualised partition and not the system as a whole.

This would create a better listening experience when listening to the file on my portable mp3 player.   I've noticed that when running a script that connects to a number of our servers (to essentially run batch commands) that the commands aren't logged in the user's .sh_history or .bash_history files. Is there a place where this is logged (assuming the script itself isn't doing the logging and I'm not tee'ing the output anywhere)? • Wondering about the Windows 7 serial number my laptop has, and its uses.

  So that's the serial number of my pre-installed windows copy, I take it. But am I allowed to use it again when, say, I don't know, my system gets crippled by a sneaky virus? If I format my computer and install windows starter again from a USB drive (speculating. I've never format before, I suppose is completely possible) Is that serial number still valid?   Seeing some posts that say 10 million rows in a table is nothing made me wonder: Just how big are most production databases? I'm not talking about physical disk size of the database (saying 60 GB tells me nothing), I'm wondering how many rows.   as title says, I have to find all the groups that the user is a member of, and deleting its membership from all of them. I've tried this: get-adgroup -filter * | where {(Get-ADGroupMember $_ | foreach {$_.PrimarySmtpAdress}) -contains "[email protected]"} but it doesnt return anything (although THERE ARE some items that have to be returned) as for the deletion I found no way to do it, could someone give me an example of a code that does this? For example see this screenshot: I am interested in the dark blue background. I heard that this background is somehow adapted to your chosen color theme. So many different variations should exist. Engadget has an article here briefly talking about these background patterns and the different color schemes. They call them "personalization tattoos".
