• Scalable WordPress Host for High-Volume Site?

  I need recommendations for a scalable web host for a high volume WordPress web site. For my purposes, high-volume might be 100K-500K visitors/hour. Might think towards a 1M/hour burst rate as a "high water mark." I know WP isn't the highest-performing platform out there (ha!), but it's non-negotiable. I can do "the usual optimizations" (e.g. put static files in a CDN, run and follow the advice of performance analyzers like YSlow, etc). But it will still be WordPress, and there will be a dozen or so plugins involved. So, where to host the site? Most "what's the best WordPress host?" discussions seem to focus on lowest-cost. I need the opposite. What are the high-volume, scalable, or clustered WordPress hosts with which you've had great experiences?

• Set ReturnPath globally in Postfix

  I have Magento using Sendmail and Wordpress using PHPmailer to send webapp-generated mail. Occasionally, someone will enter their email address incorrectly and the mail (let's say, a purchase receipt) will bounce back to the return-path specified by the script. I dont want to set the return path for each vhost, especially because it is not easily done. Ideally, WP would use the address of the blog admin and Magento would use one of the numerous email fields specified, but they default to using username@machinename (in my case, username is the system user and machinename is a FQDN, but it is not the same as the actual vhost FQDN). The result is that bounced mail returns to the server and, since the server is used only for outbound SMTP, the messages sit there, undelivered and worse, unread. I'm Postfix 2.6.6 on CentOS 6.3, is it possible to globally force a specific returnpath for all messages sent via PHP on the server?

• Wordpress Installation on Two Servers - Loadbalancing

  Hi All, I have to install wordpress (One Blog, one domain, for e.g. mycompany.com/blog) on two servers sharing one database on a different server, these two servers are behind a loadbalancer and the db would be on another server. We are planning this way due to high traffic. I have done standalone wordpress installations on a single server, on windows 2003, 2008 with IIS6, 7 etc I am just researching as to how would I implement this. What would be the steps to achieve this and upon searching I saw some posts regarding the wp-content/uploads directory to be synced at regular intervals ? your help much appreciated Thanks for reading

• First request too slow even if I have a load balancer in the back

  I have an Apache 2 on Centos + bind with a wordpress website on it (e.g example.com). I have also set up, on another server in a different contry a load balancer (varnish:80 + nginx 127.0.0.1:8080) for it - which task is to server all static content under /wp-content/. Using Simple DNS editor I added an A entry to cdn.example.com pointing to the server's IP. So no extra work from a 2nd dns server. Then using htaccess I redirect all requests to jpg|gif|css|js files to cdn.example.com. That works and all files are saved on the "cdn" server and served right away. My problem is that for the first time I enter on example.com (e.g after restarting the computer or closing the browser) the load time is 1 up to 3 seconds, while any subsequent page loads take only 300 to 600 miliseconds. I know it might be a DNS issue, but I have done a cache check on several websites and cdn.example.com indicates the right IP. Do you have any ideas where I should dig to solve this first-time slowness?

• Why are PNG-8 files mangled when opened in Photoshop?

  Why are some 32 bit PNGs opened in Photoshop with Indexed Colors and no transparency? For instance, I grabbed a png icon file of the Stack Overflow logo at: http://blog.stackoverflow.com/wp-content/uploads/icon-so.png When opening it in Photoshop CS3, it apparently treats it as indexed color and gets rid of the alpha channel. The image on the right is a screen grab of the icon. Changing the Image mode in Photoshop to RGB doesn't change the image at all. I've tried this with a few other PNGs and it seems hit or miss. When viewed in other programs, it displays fine. left:png opened in Photoshop, right:screen grab of png from browser What gives?, does Photoshop not interpret the PNG file format correctly?

• Wordpress login fail after .htaccess domain redirect

  I use .htaccess to redirect requests to my (new) domain to another domain hosted on different server. The file contains: Options +FollowSymlinks RewriteEngine on RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(www\.)?amazon40\.com [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://steamsigs.com/amazon40/$1 [R=301,L] The redirection works fine. The home page is redirected to steamsigs.com/amazon40 and wordpress login page shows up correctly (steamsigs.com/amazon40/wp-login.php). But the acutual login process doesn't work. It does not show the control panel and keeps on redirecting to the login page. Could be that something's interfering with the GET/POST vars but I'm not sure about this. I'd appreciate any your help to resolve this.

• Ubuntu 12.04 3.2 Kernel showing incorrect "cache size" in cpuinfo?

  2x Xeon E5620 . 16 Cores altogether. /proc/cpuinfo shows cache is only @ 4096kb According to intel this should have 12MB of "smart cache". Doing searched for E5620 and CPUinfo shows the correct number: cache size : 12288 KB However mine shows this: processor : 15 v endor_id : GenuineIntel cpu family : 6 model : 44 model name : Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5620 @ 2.40GHz stepping : 2 microcode : 0x1 cpu MHz : 2400.104 cache size : 4096 KB fpu : yes fpu_exception : yes cpuid level : 11 wp : yes flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush mmx bogomips : 4800.20 clflush size : 64 cache_alignment : 64 address sizes : 40 bits physical, 48 bits virtual Any idea on why it shows like it's missing 8MB in CPU cache? .

  I'm a bit on a loss here. Since WP 3.7 you can update your wordpress automatically. Since then it's more hit and miss on several servers here. I would like to understand, if it is enough to enable automatic updates described here and how this would work without a cron job. I'm under the impression right now, that the upgrade is only started, when ever someone logs into the backend, is this correct? If so, is there a way to automate the updates via a cron job?

• Trouble getting PHP, Apache, and Zend talking to eachother (localhost)

  Hi guys, I've searched through several other questions, but haven't found my solution. THe main reason is that I'm not even sure if I have all these things properly installed. I have a hosting account, and have always just deployed everything into the internets, but I'm finally trying to figure out how to get my desktop set up right for learning Zend Framework. I have Apache Server 2.2, PHP, And Zend Framework installed. I'm trying to do this tutorial: http://akrabat.com/wp-content/uploads/Getting-Started-with-Zend-Framework.pdf The problem is when I click on the link: http://localhost/zf-tutorial/public I get an Error 404. If I type in http://www.localhost I get "It Works!" in the browser. I'm thinking this means I have Apache installed correctly, but am not pointing correctly to the Zend tutorial? • Wordpress serving PHP but not CSS or JS

  I'm trying to set up an Amazon EC2 instance to run a Django app and a WP instance side by side, differing only by the incoming URL. Initially, accessing the site via mysite.com/wordpress worked, but I also needed to catch the incoming requests from a subdomain address blog.mysite.com. To do that, I created a default file in /etc/apache2/sites-enabled and included two virtualhost directives, one of which was <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName www.blog.mysite.com <Directory /var/www/wordpress> Order deny,allow Allow from all </Directory> </VirtualHost> This created some errors with the other virtualhost, so I restored the default 000-default file configuration and restarted. Now, accessing mysite.com/wordpress takes forever, and even then the CSS and JS files are not loading. Iside the Firebug Net tab, I can see the HTML response, but the CSS and JS files are not loading at all. What happened here?

• Using the same local folder for Dropbox and Skydrive

  Ever since I switched to windows phone I've sorely missed having an official dropbox app. Recently I've toyed with the idea of moving all my crucial files to SkyDrive instead. I have more storage on SkyDrive and the WP SkyDrive integration is very handy. I'm thinking about having both cloud sync services point to the same local folder for the first few weeks. That way if I want to go back its an easy task (and I can keep using dropbox's superior public folder) Has anyone else done this? Are there any potential issues (permissions, conflicts etc)

• Redircting to a url that has a ? in it

  I have a somewhat strange problem. A client has moved their site to Wordpress - cool no problem. They use a service for link exchanges that has a Wordpress plugin. The issue is that the new Links pages use a query string to display the correct content and I cannot figure out how to redirect the old URLs correctly. Old URLs look like this: domain.com/link/category-name.html The plugin makes them look like this in WP: domain.com/links/?page=category-name.html How in the world can I get the redirect to work properly? Here's what I have tried: Redirect 301 /link/actors.html http://www.artisticimages.biz/links/?page=actors.html Redirect 301 /link/actors.html http://www.artisticimages.biz/links/%3Fpage=actors.html Redirect 301 /link/actors.html http://www.artisticimages.biz/links/\?page=actors.html But none of those have worked.   I would like the root url http://www.example.com to redirect to http://www.example.com/something/else This is because some weird WP plugin always sets a cookie on the base url, which doesn't let me cache it. I tried this directive: location / { rewrite ^ /something/else break; } But 1) there is no redirect and 2) pages start shooting more than 1,000 requests to my server. With this one: location / { rewrite ^ http://www.example.com/something/else break; } Chrome reports a redirect loop. What's the correct regexp to use?

• Facing difficulty with migrating from wordpress to Drupal

  One of my blog was build of Wordpress but now i want to use Drupal as the CMS of my Blog. To do so I have deleted all the Wordpress files from my server and the Database and MySQL user which are associated with wordpress blog and uploaded the Drupal files in my server directory where the wordpress files were. But, when i have opened the blog it shows the Wordpress blog! though its been deleted and their should be the Drupal Installation interface. So, i have re-checked my server directories and database, there is not wordpress files and wp database all are deleted, there is only the drupal files, but when i go to the blog to install drupal there is still the Wordpress blog, I have checked the blog in many web browsers and there is not cache memory problem. My hosting server is linux based. can't understand what to do? Any idea? Thanks

  CentOS 6 Apache Server version: Apache/2.2.15 (Unix) Thinking about how to automatically, once a day, grep all the logs in /var/log/httpd for hacker, phishing, etc activity and e-mail it to myself so I can evaluate what I might need to do. But what are the patterns I can look for? IE, we dont run Wordpress and we see a lot of attempts to access Wordpress related content, obviously for an exploit. Same with PHPMyAdmin. I could do something like repeatedly, matching common patterns we see. # grep -r -i wp-content /var/log/httpd/ # grep -r -i php-my-admin /var/log/httpd/ How do I e-mail myself this the results of each grep command or better yet all Grep results in a single e-mail?

• OOMK kills mysql and apache when there is still a lot[?] of mem

  let me first say that I'm pretty new ti *nix systems and even more to server management. Anyway, I've got a little problem. I got VPS with 1gb mem, system is debian 6. I have few sites running on it, though some load can only be caused by one of them. Recently, OOMK started to kill mysql, causing wp and phpbb giving error that it can't connect to mysql server. Error itself is not good, especially if it happens at night and site becomes unavailable until I wake up and restart mysql. I have probably bad line in my cron which can be cause of it all (again, I'm new to it) */20 * * * * sync; echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches Well, if you need any information, let me know, since I don't really know which information can be useful here. Also, I'd like to know if it's not too bad to have above cron task.

• How can I avoid logging file not founds commonly caused by vulnerability scanners?

  My apache logs are pretty much full of 'admin.php' not found or unable to stat and similar statements for wp-login.php, default.php, and so on that are often sought after by vulnerability scanners. Can I configure apache to avoid logging these statements for certain files? I don't want to filter out all file not founds as I'd like to fix bad links that I may have put out over the years that no longer correspond to the same files. I can use a tool like fail2ban or denyhosts, but from previous experiences it comes from so many places that those errors are still going to pile up, and the reducing those error messages are what this question is asking about.

  I have been recently been doing more photography and Flickr was only allowing me to do so much with the images in displaying them.  No customization of skin, no page grouping, no post like pages.  So I decided to host a WordPress blog to host my images.  I really wanted to try WordPress to see what features single-hosted blog products offer that our multiple-hosted blog system could take advantage of.  So far the product is very cool, I can see how such a large developer network would help produce such cool “apps” for WP.  The product makes if very easy to make changes to your hosted environment that would be a little scary for a multiple blog host.  I need to compare features for their hosted solution.   Related to this question How do I run qemu with 64bit processor on a 64bit machine?, I'm trying to run latest ubuntu 11.10 64bit distribution under Ubuntu 11.04 32 bit using qemu on a core2duo (64 bit cpu) machine, using following qemu parameters with no success. Error under qemu: "This kernel required an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686 CPU. Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropiate for your CPU" Isn't qemu suppose to emulate a 64 bit machine? • Announcement: Oracle Database Appliance 2.4 patch update now available

  The Oracle Database Appliance 2.4 patch is now available from My Oracle Support (MOS).  If you search for the Oracle Database Appliance 2.4.0.0.0 Kit under Patches it will display the newly uploaded bundles. The patch highlights include: Normal redundancy (double-mirroring) option providing 6TB of usable storage Enhanced Diagnostics - Trace File Analyzer and ODACHK Also, if you review the README, you may see content that says:        "The grid infrastructure and database patching, both are rolling upgradable. During our patching, we patch the node 1 first and when completed, we patch the node 2." I would like to clarify that the 'infrastructure' updates (OS, Firmware, ILOM, etc) will require a  short downtime of the ODA while it is applied.  When you update the grid infrastructure (--gi), the appliance manager verifies that the infrastructure was updated so you cannot just patch the GI without first updating the infrastructure. The high level update patch steps include (but not limited to): Download patch update to your ODA The --infra (infrastructure) is updated and ODA Databases are down and the ODA is/may be rebooted ODA and GI/Databases are restarted Issue the command to update the Grid Infrastructure/databases (The order of the steps are completed automatically and you cannot control when the nodes are brought up and down during the patching) Node 1 -- shutdown databases and GI Node 1 -- patch GI/database Node 1 -- bring up databases and GI Node 2 -- shutdown databases and GI Node 2 -- patch GI/database Node 2 -- bring up databases and GI A replay from Friday's with Sohan on the 2.4 release can be found here.  The PDF of the presentation is here.
