  • Auto load balancing two node Cluster Hyper-v 2008 R2 enterprise?

    My setup is a 2 node cluster with 72GB ram each and a ~10TB MD3000i Iscsi SAN. I have about 30VMs running I keep about 15 on either server. I do a live migration to the other server if I need to run updates or whatever... Either one of the servers is able of running all VM if needed, but the cpu is pretty high. Here's my issues. I know Hyper-v has a limit of a single Live-migration at a time. But Why doesn't it queue them up to move one at a time? If I multi select I don't get the option to live migrate a one at a time. OR if I'm in the process of Migrating one it will give me an error that it's currently migrating a VM... Is there a button I missed that will tell a Node that it needs to migrate all the VMs elsewhere? Another question, does anyone know whats the best way to load balance VMs based on CPU and/or network utilzation. I have some VMs that don't do much. and some that trash the CPU or network. I'd like to balance it out on both servers if at all possible. and Is there any way to automate it? last question... If I overcommit my Cluster is there a way to tell the cluster that I want certian VMs the be running and to savestate other VMs based on availible system resources? Say when my one node blue screens and the other node begins starting the VMs up. I want the unimportant ones to shutdown or savestate so the important ones can stay running or come back online.   • How do I get more information on a potential network freeloader?

    I have a home network set up, complete with a relatively good password. I'm in Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and have been noticing, on occasion, a computer showing up in my Finder's Shared section, that is not one of my own (the "pe-xpjalle" box pictured below). He has a tendency to come and go. How can I figure out his MAC address or something, so I can block him? I checked my "Logs and Statistics" in the Airport Utility, and didn't see that computer under DHCP clients. I'd rather not change my password, since I have quite a few devices I'd have to update. Is there any other reason he's show up on my network besides having guessed my password? Update: I fixed the Dropbox URL above (how embarrassing, I'm new to Dropbox. Thanks for the heads up, Doug.) Update 2: I tried clicking on "Connect as..." just for the hell of it, and got the dialog below. Now I have even less an idea what's going on than before. I don't have Parallels of VMware running, just the following: Transmission, NetNewsWire, Mail, Things, Safari, iTunes, Photoshop, Pages, Yojimbo, Preferences, AppleScript Editor, Software Update, Airport Utility, and Terminal. I don't think any of those create a virtual network machine, right? And no VMware machine of mine has ever had a name resembling "pe-xpjalle". Update 3: I just changed my passwords on both my N- and G-only networks, and I'm still seeing this, so I highly doubt that it's someone who's figured out my password (twice now). I'm really stumped.

  • How does enterprise failover, such as with google.com, actually work?

    We have a few fedora systems that are configured for web, FTP, and email services. We'd like to mirror these services, so that we can provide near 100% reliability for our users. I'm a fairly experienced Linux administrator, but don't have much experience with redundant systems. What is the best way to do this? How does google and amazon do it? Google.com resolves to multiple IP addresses, but if my local desktop caches one of the IPs that are unreachable, I'm going to get a failed connection message. How do they prevent that from happening? If one of their servers goes down, how is it automatically redirected to another system, without the end-user ever knowing it? I understand there are failover devices, but they're only for failing over the system itself, not a complete network. Let's say we have the worst-case scenario, such as my primary system becomes inaccessible. What are the fundamental components that are used on Linux systems to provide this capability? I'm looking for concepts, or approaches, not answers like "check out openstack". What are the actual pieces that make up the solution? What has to be done to implement this capability? Hopefully my question is clear. I'd like to know what the pieces are that make up a failover system and what approach is taken by successful organizations that implement it. Thanks again, Alex

  • Is there any way to use the xscreensaver gltext to monitor system information?

    I am trying to get the X screensaver gltext to monitor my system temp and maybe some other stats. Writing a script that puts together the stats periodically is no problem, but the main thing I'm running into is that gltext doesn't refresh - whatever text I feed it stays there. So, for example, I run this command: $ /usr/lib/xscreensaver/gltext -text "`cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRM/temperature`" and get a gltext window showing: temperature: 60 C I can manipulate it and format it as necessary, but as my CPU heats up and cools down, it doesn't update, even if I include time variables that do. I have a script that feeds gltext the time as the first line and the temp as the second line - and although the time updates continuously as the time changes, the temperature value remains the same as whenever the screensaver started. Is it possible to do what I want, which is change the text every 60 seconds if the temperature changes?

  • System halts for a fraction of second after every 2-3 seconds

    I'm using Windows 7 on my HP ProBook 4250s. The problem I face is that my system halts for a fraction of second after every 2-3 seconds. These jerks are not letting me concentrate or work properly. This happens even when I'm just typing in notepad while no other application is running. I tried to install every driver from HP's website and there's no item in device manager marked with yellow icon.   • Notebook computer battery says: plugged in but not charging with no further information. Is the bat

    My 1.5 year old Dell Studio 15 notebook computer has a battery and I keep it attached to the notebook but 98% of the time I just plug in the power adapter. Lately when I unplugged the power adapter, the battery was only good for 10 minutes, and a few days ago, when I unplugged the power adapter, the computer simply turned off. When clicking on the battery icon on Win 7, it says "Plugged in, not charging": is the battery dead? Or can Win 7 have any option to not charge the battery? It is a Dell Studio 15, I wonder if in such case, it looks like it can be a manufacture's defect, would Dell replace the battery? (if there was a recall, then they probably would, i think). The notebook is 1.5 year old.

  • Is it possible to retrieve lost Windows XP profile information?

    I'm running Windows XP Professional on a PC which is less than a year old. About 3 months ago I got an error on boot saying windows could not find my profile. At this point it created a temp one. On this occasion I copied the temp data back into my existing profile and carried on using it. After another month it died again and, once again set me up a temp user. Each time this happens I lose everything related to my profile (desktop, start menu, etc). I ran checks on the hard disk and these suggested nothing was wrong so this seems a software issue not a disk problem. On the advice of my computer manufacturer I am now considering reinstalling Windows but just wanted to check if there's any other ideas for things I might be able to try. Any suggestions for what could be causing the problem would also be gladly appreciated.

  • On Mikrotik RouterOS, is it possible to get Netflow information from a bridged connection?

    I have a RouterOS box set up to bridge two ethernet connections. I have use-ip-firewall=yes in the bridge configuration, so that the ports go through the firewall. I've enabled netflow reporting via ip/traffic-flow, but the only packets I see reported are broadcast and multicast packets, not the packets that are flowing through the bridge. The documentation indicates that traffic flow logging happens after firewall processing and that it won't work with bridged connections by default, but I would have thought that use-ip-firewall=yes ought to address this. Is it possible to make this work somehow?

  • Where does the information shown by OS X Terminal 'Display all commands' feature come from?

    I just learned that if you hit and hold ESC while on the Mac Terminal, a prompt appears after a few seconds offering to show every command available on your system, including aliases, built-ins, and executables on your PATH. Soruce: http://www.mactricksandtips.com/2008/05/list-all-possible-terminal-commands.html However, the output is show through a more filter, and I cannot grep it or pipe it to another command. Does anyone know how this magic output is generated? Is it just generated on the fly by Terminal? Is there a bash command that can be called explicitly on the command line and get the same result? It is mostly curiosity, but I would love to be able to get the results as text I can post-process and not just browse on screen.

    I am currently using cifs to mount some network shares (that require authentication) in /etc/fstab. It works excellently, but I would like to move the authentication details (username/pass) outside of fstab and be able to chmod it 600 (as fstab can have issues if I were to change its permissions). I was wondering if it is possible to do this (many-user system, don't want these permissions to be viewable by all users). from: //server/foo/bar /mnt/bar cifs username=user,password=pass,r 0 0 to: //server/foo/bar /mnt/bar cifs <link to permissions>,r 0 0 (or something analogous to this).     I have a CA installed on of my Windows Servers in a small farm of systems. I've installed the Certification Authority Web Enrollment and Certificate Enrollment Web Service roles on the CA. I want to issue a Computer certificate to a computer not jointed to my domain. The user attempting web enrollment has domain credentials. The user was able to navigate to https://myServerHostname/certsrv and request a User certificate successfully. However, the user needs a Computer cert as well. From the certsrv site, the user tried the following: Advanced Certificate Request Create and Submit a Request to this CA However, the Computer certificate template is not available under the Certificate Template heading. He is only seeing "User" and "Basic EFS". How do I configure the CA to allow him to request a Computer cert for his system?

Computers have access to just a local DNS (no name resolution for google.com for example.) By the way ... The company does not respect the RFC1918 internally and uses public addresses! (historical reason). The use of internet proxy explicitly makes it possible to not to have problem. What if we would migrate to IPv6? Step 1 : IPv6 internet access Internet access in IPv6 is easy. Indeed, just connect the proxy in Internet IPv4 and IPv6. There is nothing to do in internal network : Step 2 : IPv6 AND IPv4 in internal network And why not full IPv6 network directly? Because there is always the old servers that are not compatible IPv6 .. Option 1 : Same architecture as in IPv4 with a proxy pac This is probably the easiest solution. But is this the best? I think the transition to IPv6 is an opportunity not to bother with this proxy pac! Option 2 : New architecture with transparent proxy, whithout proxypac, recursive DNS Oh yes! My question is regarding if it's possible to start Row Numbering at zero, or to determine a pre-allocated number of rows which contain my Headers, and then the first Row with the detail is infact seen as Row 1? Reason for question is I work multiple INternational Projects and we use Excel to trsack alot of activities & issues. Oddly, many people will refer to, for example "Point 7"... Some people mean the ID 7 (which I have the first Column dedicated to ID Number), some mean Excel Row 7, which infact could be really ID 3, or 4 from Col. A.... Any easy way or workaround to just use the Excel Row Numbers but select from when Row 1 is counted?

    Hi, i am wondering how long the bootprocess needs and looking in %SystemRoot%\system32\eventvwr.msc /s. Some entries marked as critical like : Starting needs : 184707ms, sometimes 211855ms or 269767ms Some Errors like: This process does many diskactivities and lower the performance of Windows: Filename : ntoskrnl.exe Why are the startups marked as critical? Are the values normal on a Dell Precision M90 (Intel Centrono Dual CPU, 2GB RAM, 80 GB Disk)? Some entries marked as Errors showing the time for shutdown, but there are some like this one i printed in this question, what is the meaning of this?
