  • How to stop PowerShell from unpacking an Enumerable object?

    Working on a simple helper function in PowerShell that takes a couple of parameters and creates a custom Enumerable object and outputs that object to the pipeline. The problem I am having is that PowerShell is always outputting a System.Array that contains the objects that are enumerated by my custom Enumerable object.   • Subversion for version control

    Hi, I am working on an application whose primary purpose would be to provide source control management. My idea is to use to SVNKit for file check-out and check-in. However, while working with SVNKit, I realised it does not have the speed I was looking for. For instance, whenever developers create a ChangeRequest, which can encompass change in 3-40 files, I have to create a directory structure distributed across 32 folders. Doing so takes around 50 seconds, Another instance is that after creating change request developers can add files to the request. Copying even a single file from Trunk to branch takes around 6-7 secs. My question is has anyone had experience like this and what did you do to improve the performance? Moreover, is my approach correct? NOTE: I am using "http" protocol and can't use "svn" protocol.

  • Middleware with generic communication media layer

    Greetings all, I'm trying to implement middleware (driver) for an embedded device with generic communication media layer. Not sure what is the best way to do it so I'm seeking an advice from more experienced stackoverflow users:). Basically we've got devices around the country communicating with our servers (or a pda/laptop in used in field). Usual form of communication is over TCP/IP, but could be also using usb, RF dongle, IR, etc. The plan is to have object corresponding with each of these devices, handling the proprietary protocol on one side and requests/responses from other internal systems on the other. The thing is how create something generic in between the media and the handling objects. I had a play around with the TCP dispatcher using boost.asio but trying to create something generic seems like a nightmare :). Anybody tried to do something like that? What is the best way how to do it? Example: Device connects to our Linux server. New middleware instance is created (on the server) which announces itself to one of the running services (details are not important). The service is responsible for making sure that device's time is synchronized. So it asks the middleware what is the device's time, driver translates it to device language (protocol) and sends the message, device responses and driver again translates it for the service. This might seem as a bit overkill for such a simple request but imagine there are more complex requests which the driver must translate, also there are several versions of the device which use different protocol, etc. but would use the same time sync service. The goal is to abstract the devices through the drivers to be able to use the same service to communicate with them. Another example: we find out that the remote communications with the device are down. So we send somebody out with PDA, he connects to the device using USB cable. Starts up the application which has the same functionality as the timesync service. Again middleware instance is created (on the PDA) to translate communication between application and the device this time only using USB/serial media not TCP/IP as in previous example.   • Which one should I choose AMQP or XMPP for real-time browser-based game?

    Hi, I'm choosing between AMQP (RabbitMQ) vs XMPP (eJabberd) for my browser-based flash-free javascript powered real-time turn-based game. I don't know much about AMQP and XMPP protocol. I would like to use PHP for user-authorization and some data store-retrieve with MySQL. As far as I found out, RabbitMQ has PHP clients but eJabberd not. What I understood is javascript client calls PHP script and manipulate necessary processing and then pass to AMQP or XMPP server to pass the data to opponent player. There is a good book 'Pro XMPP Programming with JS and jQuery' from Wrox but there is no example with PHP. So following are my questions. 1) Which protocol is suit for my game? 2) Shall I choose RabbitMQ just for it's PHP client support?

  • Reading data from a socket, considerations for robustness and security

    I am writing a socket server that will implement small portions of the HTTP and the WebSocket protocol, and I'm wondering what I need to take into consideration in order to make it robust/secure. This is my first time writing a socket-based application so please excuse me if any of my questions are particularly naive. Here goes: Is it wrong to assume that you've received an entire HTTP request (WebSocket request, etc) if you've read all data available from the socket? Likewise, is it wrong to assume you've only received one request? Is TCP responsible for making sure I'm getting the "message" all at once as sent by the client? Or do I have to manually detect the beginning and end of each "message" for whatever protocol I'm implementing? Regarding security: What, in general, should I be aware of? Are there any common pitfalls when implementing something like this? As always, any feedback is greatly appreciated.

    How to access block level storage via the kernel (w/o using scsi libraries)? My intent is to implement a block level storage protocol over network for learning purpose, almost the same way SCSI works. Requests will be generated by initiator and sent to target (both userspace program) which makes call to kernel module and returns the data using TCP protocol to initiator. So far, I have managed to build a simple "Hello" module and run it (I am new at kernel programming), but unable to proceed with block access. After searching a lot, I found struct buffer_head * bread(int dev,int block) in linux/fs.h, but the compiler throws error. error: implicit declaration of function ‘bread’ Please help, also feel free to advice on starting with kernel programming.     Hey, first of all this is a conceptional question and I do not know if StackOverflow is the appropriate place - so my apologies if I am wrong. Nowadays the web is not only used for passing raw informations. Many and especially complex web applications are in use. These web application seem to be so complex that it seems irrational to use the HTTP protocol, which is based on so simple data exchange, plus it is stateless. Would it not be more convincing to use remote invocations for this web applications? The big advantage to my mind is a unified GUI by using HTML. But there are applications, which have no need for a graphical interfaces and then it comes to a point where the HTTP protocol is really cumbersome.

    I'm trying to configure a couple of Cisco 1941 routes. The are both identical routers. Each as a HWIC-1T (Smart Serial interface) and a HWIC-3G-HSPA 3G interface. These routers are to be sent to remote sites. We have connectivity to one of the sites but if remote site A gors down we lose connectivity to remote site B. The HWIC-1T is the primary WAN interface using frame relay joining the two remote sites We want the HWIC-3G-HSPA to be usable for direct connectivity from head office to remote site B, and also the HWIC-3G-HSPA is do be used for comms between the remote sites when the frame relay is down (happens quite a bit). I initialy tried to do dynamic routing using EIGRP however in my lab setup of laptop - 1941 - 1941 - laptop, I was unable to get end to end connectivity. I later settled on static routing and have got end to end connectivity but only over frame relay, not the HWIC-3G-HSPA. I've tried using kron to ping the local HWIC-3G-HSPA interface (cellular 0/1/0) every minute but that hasn't been successful. Manually pinging the IP assigned (by the telco) to ce0/1/0 does bring the interface up. Any ideas? Thanks
