• Stuck on preserving config file in WIX major upgrade!

  ARGH! Wix is driving me crazy. So, of course I have seen the many posts both here on stackoverflow and elsewhere about WiX and major upgrades. I inherited this software project using WiX and am releasing a new version. I need this new version to leave ONLY the one configuration file if it's present, and replace everything else. This installer works EXCEPT no matter what I have done so far, the new XML file replaces the old on every install. Even attempting to use NeverOverwrite="yes" and even trying and messing back and forth with OnlyDetect="no"! I am simply stuck and humbly request a little guidance. The file that needs to be preserved is called SETTINGS.XML and is in the All Users-ApplicationData directory. • Calling one DAO from another DAO?

  Can this ever make sense? Say I need to fetch an object from the DB which has a relation to another object (represented by a foreign key in the DB, and by a composition in my domain object). If in my first DAO I fetch the data for object 1, then call the dao for object 2, and finally (from within the first DAO, call the setter in object 1 and give it the previously fetched object 2). I know I could do a join instead, but it just seems more logical to me to decouple the functionality (which is why I am skeptical about calling one dao from another). Or should I move some of the logic to the service layer? Thanks Update: I think I solved the problem with help from the answers: all I needed to do was add the following to my mapping of Object 1: <one-to-one name="Object2" fetch="join" class="com...Object2"></one-to-one> I didn't have to change anything else. Mozilla Rhino, Aptana Jaxer and various John Resig's articles are some of the highlights of my search.   Hi SQL'ers, This is a followup question to: SQL Query with ORDER BY But I think the SQL logic is going to be quite different, so I am posting it as separate question. I am trying to extend my sql SELECT query it and having some trouble: I have the table: id type radius ------------------------- 1 type1 0.25 2 type2 0.59 3 type1 0.26 4 type1 0.78 5 type3 0.12 6 type2 0.45 7 type3 0.22 8 type3 0.98 and I am trying to learn how to SELECT the second smallest radius for each given type. So the returned recordset should look like: id type radius ------------------------- 3 type1 0.26 2 type2 0.59 7 type3 0.22 (Note: in the referenced question, I was looking for the lowest radius, not the second lowest radius). I am assuming I have to use LIMIT and OFFSET, but if I use the MIN() won't that return a distinct record containing the minimum radius? Does anyone have any thoughts on how to attack this?   Hi I have this sample model working with the admin class Author(models.Model): name = models.CharField(_('Text in here'), max_length=100) with verbose_name set as ugettext_lazy 'Text in here', but sometimes, depending on the site_id i want to present a diferent verbose name, so I modified the init in this way def __init__(self, *args, **kwargs): super(Author, self).__init__(*args, **kwargs) #some logic in here self._meta.get_field('name').verbose_name = _('Other text') It works, displaying the 'Other text' instead the 'Text in here'... except for the very first time the author/add view is used. ¿Is it the right way to do it? ¿How can i fix the first time problem?   I am trying to iterate through each of the members of an object. For each member, I check to see if it is a function or not. If it is a function, I want to get the name of it and perform some logic based on the name of the function. I don't know if this is even possible though. Is it? • Database design: circular references

  I have three database tables: users emails invitations Emails are linked to users by a user_id field. Invitations are also linked to users by a user_id field Emails can be created without an invitation, but every invitation must have an email. I would like to link the emails and invitations tables so it is possible to find the email for a particular invitation. However this creates a circular reference, both an invitation and an email record hold the id for the same user. Is this bad design and if so, how could I improve it? My feeling is that with use of foreign keys and good business logic, it is fine.

  hi all, i am currently refactoring an existing codebase (EJBs...) to rip out all blocks where a Throwable is catched inside of the EJB. try { ... do some business logic } catch(Throwable t){ ... log and swallow ... :-( } i want/need to convince the people around me with proper documentation that "catching throwable" is a no-go for an EJB (we have lots of discussions around this :-(( ). weblogic will handle all the "Error" conditions and maybe invalidate EJBs and put fresh(working) EJBs into the pool. catching Throwable would undermine all these security nets provided by weblogic. and catching throwable is bad practice anyway (but people here are reluctant and use the "throwable" hammer everywhere). is anyone able to point me to some online docs where this behaviour is explained (for weblogic or jboss or...). i searched via google and had a look at the weblogic docs but wasn't able to find anything, just generic java doc. any help highly appreciated cheers marcel

• Strange behaviour of code inside TransactionScope?

  We are facing a very complex issue in our production application. We have a WCF method which creates a complex Entity in the database with all its relation. public void InsertEntity(Entity entity) { using(TransactionScope scope = new TransactionScope()) { EntityDao.Create(entity); } } EntityDao.Create(entity) method is very complex and has huge pieces of logic. During the entire process of creation it creates several child entities and also have several queries to database. During the entire WCF request of entity creation usually Connection is maintained in a ThreadStatic variable and reused by the DAOs. Although some of the queries in DAO described in step 2 uses a new connection and closes it after use. Overall we have seen that the above process behaviour is erratic. Some of the queries in the inner DAO does not even return actual data from the database? The same query when run to the actaul data store gives correct result. What can be possible reason of this behaviour?

  I am struggling with the configuration for the scenario below. I have a custom WCF/WIF STS (RP-STS) that provides security tokens to my WCF services RP-STS is an "Active" STS RP-STS acts as a claims transformation STS RP-STS trusts tokens from many customer-specific identity provider STSes (IdP-STS) When a WCF Client connects to a service it should authenticate with it's local IdP-STS The reading that I've done describes this as Home Realm Discovery. HRD is usually described within the context of web applications and Passive STSes. My questions is, for my situation, does the logic for choosing an IdP-STS endpoint belong in the RP-STS or the WCF Client application? I thought it belonged in the RP-STS, but I cannot figure out the configuration to make this happen. RP-STS has a single endpoint, but I cannot figure out how to add more than one trusted issuer per endpoint. Any guidance on this would be very appreciated (I'm out of useful keywords to Google.) Also, if I'm way off please offer alternative approaches. Thanks!

• Has anybody use javafx on CDC J9?

  Is that possible?? I mean, I have an already working project that runs in windows mobile using the J9 virtual machine for CDC. My user interface there is using AWT and it works fine and it looks OK, but been honest it doesn't take real advantage of the devices were is running... So I start reading about JavaFX and that looks really cool, but all that I see about mobiles there is applied to CLDC, MIDP, etc. but my application is already running on CDC J9 and I can't change this cause I'm using a Derby database on it. So, my plan is to code the GUI again, but keeping the logic of the application. So do you guys think javafx is the way to go? or, am I wasting my time learning javafx for this project.   I have a simple inheritance heirarchy with MyType2 inheriting from MyType1. I have an instance of MyType1, arg, passed in as an argument to a method. If arg is an instance of MyType2, then I'd like to perform some logic, transforming the instance. My code looks something like the code below. • Can a PL/pgSQL function contain a dynamic subquery?

  I am writing a PL/pgSQL function. The function has input parameters which specify (indirectly), which tables to read filtering information from. The function embeds business logic which allows it to select data from different tables based on the input arguments. The function dynamically builds a subquery which returns filtering data which is then used to run the main query. My questions are: Is it 'legal' to use a dynamic subquery in a PL/pgSQL function. I cant see why not - but this question is related to the next one. AFAIK, PL/pgSQL are cached or precompiled by the query engine. How does having a function that generates dynamic subqueries impact the work of the query engine?

• Want to load jquery dialog from a different web-page

  I'm a bit of a n00b with jquery so this one is probably an RTFM question: I'm writing an application to create a somewhat complex record for my client. Building the record requires doing a couple of server side searches inside a dialog. Right now I have everything framed up in 1 file (asp.net) and it's ok. But I can see as I add the business logic and the communication with the server this is going to get really ugly. I'm alreay putting most of the javascript in external files, but I'd like to move the HTML for the dialogs out too. How do I get the jquery dialog method to load the dialog body from the html files? Something like: getDialogHTML(dialogHolderDiv); <---magic goes here var dialogOptions = { ... }; $("#"+dialogHolderDiv).dialog(dialogOptions); $("#"+dialogHolderDiv).dialog('open'); any help will be apperciated .

  I am assigned to a performance-tuning-debugging-troubleshooting task. Scenario: a multi-application environment running on several networked machines using databases. OS is Unix, DB is Oracle. Business logic is implemented across applications using synchronous/asynchronous communication. Applications are multi-user with several hundred call center users at peak time. User interfaces are web-based. Applications are third party, I can get access to developers and source code. I only have the production system and a functional test environment, no load test environment. Problem: bad performance! I need fast results. Management is going crazy. I got symptom examples like these: user interface actions taking minutes to complete. Seaching for a customer usually takes 6 seconds but an immediate subsequent search with same parameters may take 6 minutes. What would be your strategy for finding root causes?

  I want to load a bunch of view definitions into SQL Server 2005 & 2008. I am using IF/ELSE logic to dynamically building Create or Alter statements that I then EXEC. This works fine. However, unless I get the order of the statements correct, I get errors if a view is dependent on another view that would be created in a later statement. Is there a way to turn of the valiation of the SQL statements until after they have all been entered? It seems like the worst of both worlds. SQL Server does late binding and so it won't propogate changes to tables and views, but you can't create a view without all the pieces being in place.

This can concisely express certain logic flows; I've encountered one of these flows in Perl. Right now what I am doing is sub frobnicator { my $frob = shift; return "foo" if $frob eq "Foomaticator"; return "bar" if $frob eq "Barmaticator"; croak("Unable to frob legit value: $frob received"); } Which feels inexpressive and ugly. This code has to run on Perl 5.8.8, but of course I am interested in more modern techniques as well.

However, because I'm using Webrat and not Selenium, everything has to go through the Webrat model. So I cannot do class MyPage < Selenium::WebPage end because that adds a direct dependency. So I have to route everything through Webrat while still maintaining the Selenium Page object goodness. No documentation on this that I can see: if someone has anything on Webrat + PageModel I'd love to see it.

  I recently came along this line of code: CustomData_em_free_block(&em->vdata, &eve->data); And I thought, isn't: a->b just syntactic sugar for: (*a).b With that in mind, this line could be re-written as: CustomData_em_free_block(&(*em).vdata, &(*eve).data); If that's the case, what is the point of passing in &(*a), as a parameter, and not just a? It seems like the pointer equivalent of -(-a) is being passed in in, is there any logic for this? Thank you.

  I'm currently evaluating QtQuick (Qt User Interface Creation Kit) which will be released as part of Qt 4.7. QML is the JavaScript-based declarative language behind QtQuick. It seems to be a very powerful concept, but I'm wondering if anybody that's made extensive use of other, more mature declarative-UI languages like XAML in WPF or Silverlight can give any insight into the real-world benefits that can be gained from this style of programming. Various advantages are often cited: Speed of development Forces separation between presentation and logic Better integration between coders and designers UI changes don't require re-compilation Also, are there any downsides? A few potential areas of concern spring to mind: Execution speed Memory usage Added complexity Are there any other considerations that should be taken into account?

• Inheritance of Custom Attributes on Abstract Properties

  I've got a custom attribute that I want to apply to my base abstract class so that I can skip elements that don't need to be viewed by the user when displaying the item in HTML. It seems that the properties overriding the base class are not inheriting the attributes. Does overriding base properties (abstract or virtual) blow away attributes placed on the original property? • Find height of ContextMenuStrip before showing it

  I have a ContextMenuStrip (ctMenuMassEdit) that I want to display when left-clicking a button (btnMassEdit). I want the ContextMenuStrip to be displayed above the button, i.e. position (0,-ContextMenuStrip.Height) relative to the button: private void btnMassEdit_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { ctMenuMassEdit.Show(btnMassEdit, new Point(0, -ctMenuMassEdit.Height)); } However, the Height property is 0 the first time the button is clicked (I assume the ContextMenuStrip isn't created before it is shown the first time), and the result is that the ContextMenuStrip appears on top of the button. The 2nd time I click the button however, it appears in the correct position, so the basic of my logic is at least correct. I tried adding the following before showing the ContextMenuStrip, but it didn't work as hoped: if (!ctMenuMassEdit.Created) { ctMenuMassEdit.CreateControl(); } So, is there a way I can create the ContextMenuStrip before showing it the first time, so I have the correct Height property? I could of course use the hack of showing it, hiding it and showing it again, but that doesn't seem really neat...
