• Rails - handling global site settings

  I'm developing a new rails application which is supposed to be installed several times in order to implement several sites. There are some things, like the "Site Title" or the "Default Number of Items per Page" that clearly belong to a "global settings" table / config file. I've made a list of the things I think I'll need: ActiveRecord model that is capable of: Storing different kinds of data. I suppose this would be accomplished encoding the values on a string on the db, probably with a "type" field. Indexing settings by name Validations based on a "type" attribute (i.e. don't accept invalid dates on "date" settings) Validations based on a allows_nil property. A controller that allows me to change settings via views. I'm pretty sure I could implement this myself, but I'm not willing to reinvent the wheel. I've done some searching, but I could only find rails-settings, which doesn't really serve me: I need a proper model & controller so I can use declarative-authorization, and it does not provide any controller or view facilities. Is there a gem or plugin out there that implements what I want, or any library I should look at? Thanks a lot.

• Improving field get and set performance with ASM or Javassist

  I would like to avoid reflection in an open source project I am developing. Here I have classes like the following. public class PurchaseOrder { @Property private Customer customer; @Property private String name; } I scan for the @Property annotation to determine what I can set and get from the PurchaseOrder reflectively. There are many such classes all using java.lang.reflect.Field.get() and java.lang.reflect.Field.set(). Ideally I would like to generate for each property an invoker like the following. public interface PropertyAccessor<S, V> { public void set(S source, V value); public V get(S source); } Now when I scan the class I can create a static inner class of PurchaseOrder like so. static class customer_Field implements PropertyAccessor<PurchaseOrder, Customer> { public void set(PurchaseOrder order, Customer customer) { order.customer = customer; } public Customer get(PurchaseOrder order) { return order.customer; } } With these I totally avoid the cost of reflection. I can now set and get from my instances with native performance. Can anyone tell me how I would do this. A code example would be great. I have searched the net for a good example but can find nothing like this. The ASM and Javasist examples are pretty poor also. The key here is that I have an interface that I can pass around. So I can have various implementations, perhaps one with Java Reflection as a default, one with ASM, and one with Javassist? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Design problem with callback functions in android

  Hi folks! I'm currently developing an app in android that is accessing wifi values, that is, the application needs to scan for all access point and their specific signal strengths. I know that I have to extend the class BroadcastReceiver overwriting the method BroadcastReceiver.onReceive(Context context, Intent intent) which is called when the values are ready. Perhaps there exist solutions provided by the android system itself but I'm relatively new to android so I could need some help. The problem I encountered is that I got one class (an activity, thus controlled by the user) that needs this scan results for two different things (first to save the values in a database or second, to use them for further calculations but not both at one moment!) So how to design the callback system in order to "transport" the scan results from onReceive(Context context, Intent intent) to the operation intended by the user? My first solution was to define enums for each use case (save or use for calculations) which wlan-interested classes have to submit when querying for the values. But that would force the BroadcastReceiverextending class to save the current enum and use it as a parameter in the callback function of the querying class (this querying class needs to know what it asked for when getting backcalled) But that seems to me kind of dirty ;) So anyone a good idea for this?

  Hi, I'm developing an adding for office powerpoint application. I'm trying to display a description of the object(Customized object) currently dropped on the powerpoint slide in design mode(Design mode of the powerpoint). When i click on my addin the related object description will be displayed on a tabbed window as the first tabpage. There is a button on the tab page, and when i click on it i need the description to get copied to windows clipboard. I tried this using clipboardclass it throws the following exception, System.Threading.ThreadstateException {"Current thread must be set to single thread apartment (STA) mode before OLE calls can be made. Ensure that your Main function has STAThreadAttribute marked on it."} Code for clipboard: Clipboard.Clear() Clipboard.SetText(lblObjectID.Text) I searched the net for a solution and got couple of answers like, 1. Put [STAThread] in the main function 2. Thread.CurrentThread.SetApartmentState(ApartmentState.STA) Immediately before your call to SetDataObject. But I'm not sure where to put the 1st one and the 2nd option didn't work. Can anyone help me please. Thanks.

• Java - SwingWorker - problem

  I am developing a Java Desktop Application. This app executes the same task public class MyTask implements Callable<MyObject> { in multiple thread simultaneously. Now, when a user clicks on a "start" button, I have created a SwingWorker myWorker and have executed it. Now, this myWorker creates multiple instances of MyTask and submits them to an ExecutorService. Each MyTask instance has a loop and generates an intermediate result at every iteration. Now, I want to collect these intermediate results from each MyTask instances as soon as they are generated. Then after collecting these intermediate results from every MyTask instance, I want to publish it through SwingWorker.publish(MyObject) so that the progress is shown on the EDT. Q1. How can I implement this? Should I make MyTask subclass of SwingWorker instead of Callable to get intermediate results also, because I think that Callable only returns final result. Q2. If the answer of Q1. is yes, then can you give me a small example to show how can I get those intermediate results and aggregate them and then publish them from main SwingWorker? Q3. If I can't use SwingWorker in this situation, then how can I implement this?

• Creating a REST client API using Reactive Extensions (Rx)

  I'm trying to get my head around the right use cases for Reactive Extensions (Rx). The examples that keeps coming up are UI events (drag and drop, drawing), and suggestions that Rx is suitable for asynchronous applications/operations such as web service calls. I'm working on an application where I need to write a tiny client API for a REST service. I need to call four REST end-points, three to get some reference data (Airports, Airlines, and Statuses), and the fourth is the main service that will give you flight times for a given airport. I have created classes exposing the three reference data services, and the methods look something like this: public Observable<Airport> GetAirports() public Observable<Airline> GetAirlines() public Observable<Status> GetStatuses() public Observable<Flights> GetFlights(string airport) In my GetFlights method I want each Flight to hold a reference the Airport it's departing from, and the Airline operating the flight. To do that I need the data from GetAirports and GetAirlines to be available. My initial thinking was something like this: Write a Rx Query that will Subscribe on the three reference services (Airports, Airlines and Statuses) Add results into a Dictionary (airline code and Airline object) When all three GetAirports, GetAirlines and GetStatuses are complete, then return the GetFlights IObservable. Is this a reasonable scenario for Rx? I'm developing on the Windows Phone 7, so I'm not sure if there are major differences in the Rx implementations across the different platforms.

  I'm developing an html editor using ComDlg32.ocx (Commom Dialog Control), using HTML and VBScript. My exact requirement was to prompt Open/Save/Color/Print/Font dialog boxes.Ive written code for prompting Save file dialog box. Also I've added a license file using LPK Tool onto my webpage. And my VBScript look like: FILE_FORMATS = "Rich Text Format (*.rtf)|*.rtf|Microsoft Word (*.doc)|*.doc|ANSI Text Document (*.txt)|*.txt" objComDlg.Filter = FILE_FORMATS <--- Error shows here objComDlg.DialogTitle = "Save As " objComDlg.Flags = cdlOFNFileMustExist Or cdlOFNHideReadOnly objComDlg.CancelError = True objComDlg.ShowSave Does anyone have an idea why this is happening? • UI Design, incase of numerous situations

  Hi... I'm creating a web form, where in there are around 12-15 Input Fields... You can have a look at the screen and The request is such that depending on the data the user selects in the Gridview and the DropDown list, the appropriate Textboxes and CheckBoxes needs to be displayed. Some times the conditions are very direct, like when the DDL value is "ABC", get only paid amount from the user. Sometime they are so complex like... IF DDL is "DEF" and Selected GPMS value is between 1000-2000, calculate the values of allowed, paid etc (using some formula) and the focus should be directed to Page No Field, leaving the other fields open incase user wants to edit... There are around 10-15 conditions like this. As this was done through agile, conditions were being added as and when, and wherever it feels appropriate (DDL on change Event, GridView on selecting change event etc... etc..) After completion, now I see the code has become a big chuck, is growing unmanageably... Now, I'm planning to clear this... From you experience, what you think is the best way to handle this. There is a possibility to add more conditions like this in future... Please let me know, incase you need more information. I'm currently developing this app in C# .Net WindowsForms Edit: Currently there are only three items (The Datagrid, the DDL, the OverrideAmt CheckBox) that change the way other fields behave... Almost all of the conditions will fall between the two situations I mentioned... Mostly they belong to "Enabling/Disabling".. "Setting of Values"... and "Changing Focus" or any combination of these.

• My perl script is acting funny...

  I am trying to make a jabber bot from scratch and my script is acting funny. I was originally developing the bot on a remote CentOS box, but I have switched to a local Win7 machine. Right now I'm using ActiveState Perl and I'm using Eclipse with the perl plugin to run a debug the script. The funny behavior I'm experiencing occurs when I run or debug the script. If I run the script using the debugger it works fine, meaning I can send messages to the bot and it can send messages to me. However when I just execute the script normally the bot sends the successful connection message then it disconnects from my jabber server and the script ends. I'm a novice when it comes to perl and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. My guess is it has something to do with the subroutines and sending the presence of the bot. (I know for sure that it has something to do with sending the bot's presence because if the presence code is removed, the script behaves as expected except the bot doesn't appear to be online.) If anyone can help me with this that would be great. • Objective-C NSDate memory issue (again)

  I'm developing a graphing application and am attempting to change the renderer from OpenGL to Quartz2D to make text rendering easier. A retained NSDate object that was working fine before suddenly seems to be deallocating itself, causing a crash when an NSMutableString attempts to append it's decription (now 'nil'). Build & analyse doesn't report any potential problems. Simplified, the code looks like this: NSDate* aDate -(id)init { aDate = [[NSDate date] retain] return self; } -(void)drawRect(CGRect)rect { NSMutableString* stringy = [[NSMutableString alloc] init]; //aDate is now deallocated and pointing at 0x0? [stringy appendString:[aDate description]]; //Crash } I should stress that the actual code is a lot more complicated than that, with a seperate thread also accessing the date object, however suitable locks are in place and when stepping through the code [aDate release] is not being called anywhere. Using [[NSDate alloc] init] bears the same effect. I should also add that init IS the first function to be called. Can anyone suggest something I may have overlooked, or why the NSDate object is (or appears to be) releasing itself?

• Optimizing quality for available bandwidth in Flash/RTMFP

  I'm developing a simple one-on-one P2P video chat using ActionScript, and I'd like to ensure the best video quality for the peers given their bandwidth. This means: Setting the best quality given the available bandwidth when the chat starts Responding to network congestions during chat by decreasing the quality. The task is similar to dynamic stream switching, but P2P has its specifics that make dynamic streaming approaches not work. For example, the maxBytesPerSecond metric monitored in dynamic stream switching is pretty useless in P2P where the receiving NetStream's buffer size is set to 0 to minimize latency. So far, it looks like the most reliable QoS metric for P2P is SRTT. In my simulated tests on a local network, a bandwidth congestion makes it shot up to 500 ms and more when there's a bandwidth limit introduced. However, it gives no hint as to how best adjust the value for bandwidth in Camera.setQuality(0, bandwidth) to respond to the congestion. I've done lots of experiments, and I still don't see a clear and simple solution to the problem. I'm also wondering how this issue is addressed (if at all) in other RTMFP chat solutions.

  Hi Everyone, I'm new in blackberry environement programming, I'm developing an application for this device and there are some probs about libraries that I don't understand. I have the main project called: npoBBerry - his library is NET_RIM_BLACKBERRY (from 4.6.1 version...) it includes other two projects: Npo - his library is standard jre6 (Npo inlcudes NpoCore) NpoCore - his library is standard jre6 Compliance was set... In Java Compiler level is set to 1.4 for all. Now the problem is that I'm not able to build my project. 4 errors: Error preverifying class ch.yek.npo.model.Advertising Error preverifying class ch.yek.npo.repository.Repository$1 Error!: Error: preverifier failed: C:\Program Files\eclipse\plugins\net.rim.eide.componentpack4.6.1_4.6.1.27\components\bin\preverify.ex ... Error!: Error: preverifier failed: C:\Program Files\eclipse\plugins\net.rim.eide.componentpack4.6.1_4.6.1.27\components\bin\preverify.ex ... I know that libraries are differents but maybe I'm missing something. NpoCore represents models, interfaces Npo just take data from a repository NpoBBeryy just use this data from Services... • Efficient method to calculate the rank vector of a list in Python

  I'm looking for an efficient way to calculate the rank vector of a list in Python, similar to R's rank function. In a simple list with no ties between the elements, element i of the rank vector of a list l should be x if and only if l[i] is the x-th element in the sorted list. This is simple so far, the following code snippet does the trick: def rank_simple(vector): return [rank for rank in sorted(range(n), key=vector.__getitem__)] Things get complicated, however, if the original list has ties (i.e. multiple elements with the same value). In that case, all the elements having the same value should have the same rank, which is the average of their ranks obtained using the naive method above. So, for instance, if I have [1, 2, 3, 3, 3, 4, 5], the naive ranking gives me [0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6], but what I would like to have is [0, 1, 3, 3, 3, 5, 6]. Which one would be the most efficient way to do this in Python? Footnote: I don't know if NumPy already has a method to achieve this or not; if it does, please let me know, but I would be interested in a pure Python solution anyway as I'm developing a tool which should work without NumPy as well.

• Can I have two separate projects, 1 WebForms and 1 ASP.NET MVC, to both point to the same domain?

  Is it possible to setup two separate projects, 1 WebForms and 1 ASP.NET MVC, to both point to the same domain? i.e. both point to different pages within www.somesite.com. Here's some background on the application and why I'm asking. This is a brownfield application that is currently 2.0 WebForms and is full of WebFormy 'goodness' (i.e. ObjectDataSources, FormView controls, UpdatePanels, etc...) There are lost of other 'fun' things in the code base like 600+ Stored Procedures and 200+ line methods in the business layer code that get data from the DB via stored proc, do some processing on the data, build an HTML string using string concatenation and then return that string to the UI layer. What we are planning on doing is developing new features in MVC and slowly converting the existing features over to MVC one at a time. As part of this transition, we will also be re-writing the layers below the UI to clean up the mess there and to do things like replace the stored procedures with NHibernate and introduce an IOC container. I know that you can run WebForms and MVC side-by-side in the same project, however, because we will be making wholesale changes to the way we do many things throughout our entire development stack, I'd like the new stuff to be a completely separate project within the solution. This should help serve as very visual reminder that this is a different way of doing things than before and make it easier to remove the old code as it is no longer needed. What I don't know is, is this even possible? Can two separate project point to the same domain? • How to parse a custom XML-style error code response from a website

  I'm developing a program that queries and prints out open data from the local transit authority, which is returned in the form of an XML response. Normally, when there are buses scheduled to run in the next few hours (and in other typical situations), the XML response generated by the page is handled correctly by the java.net.URLConnection.getInputStream() function, and I am able to print the individual results afterwards. The problem is when the buses are NOT running, or when some other problem with my queries develops after it is sent to the transit authority's web server. When the authority developed their service, they came up with their own unique error response codes, which are also sent as XMLs. For example, one of these error messages might look like this: <Error xmlns:i="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"> <Code>3005</Code> <Message>Sorry, no stop estimates found for given values.</Message> </Error> (This code and similar is all that I receive from the transit authority in such situations.) However, it appears that URLConnection.getInputStream() and some of its siblings are unable to interpret this custom code as a "valid" response that I can handle and print out as an error message. Instead, they give me a more generic HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found error. This problem cascades into my program which then prints out a java.io.FileNotFoundException error pointing to the offending input stream. My question is therefore two-fold: 1. Is there a way to retrieve, parse, and print a custom XML-formatted error code sent by a web service using the plugins that are available in Java? 2. If the above is not possible, what other tools should I use or develop to handle such custom codes as described?

• Side by side madness - running binaries on different computer (with a twist)

  Here's my configuration: Computer A - Windows 7, MS Visual Studio 2005 patched for Win7 compatibility (8.0.50727.867) Computer B - Windows XP SP2, MS Visual Studio 2005 installed (8.0.50727.42) My project has some external dependencies (prebuilt DLLs - either build on A or downloaded from the Internet), a couple of DLLs built from sources and one executable. I am mostly developing on A and all is fine there. At some point I try to build my project on computer B, copying the prebuilt DLLs to the output folder. Everything builds fine, but trying to start my application I get The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0150002).... The event log contains two of those: Dependent Assembly Microsoft.VC80.CRT could not be found and Last Error was The referenced assembly is not installed on your system. plus the slightly more amusing Generate Activation Context failed for some.dll. Reference error message: The operation completed successfully. At this point I'm trying my Google-Fu, but in vain - virtually all hits are about running binaries on machines without Visual Studio installed. In my case, however, the executables fail to run on the computer they are built. Next step was to try dependency walker and it baffled me even more - my DLLs built from sources on the same box cannot find MSVCR80.DLL and MSVCP80.DLL, however the executable seems to be alright in respect to those two DLLs i.e. when I open the executable with dependency walker it shows that the MSVC?80.DLLs can be found, but when I open one of my DLLs it says they cannot. That's where I am completely out of ideas what to do so I'm asking you, dear stackoverflow :) I admit I'm a bit blurry on the whole side-by-side thing, so general reading on the topic will also be appreciated.

• Does Apple's Reachability work with 3G connectivity?

  I am developing an iPad application, and I am trying to figure out the best way to decide if a user can connect to the Internet. If the user has no connectivity, I will load cached data, otherwise I will load new data. I am trying to use Apple's reachability class for this, and I wanted to see if I am doing this correctly.   Hi All, I am developing a silverlight 3 application using WCF RIA services. I am using the AuthenticationBase class to handle my authentication. As I understand it under the hood this uses the ASP .NET authentication libraries. When I log into the site the authentication service handles login state so that if I close the site and open it straight away I am still logged in according to the server. When the webpage is refreshed or closed and reloaded I can call the method, WebContextBase.Current.Authentication.LoadUser() And it goes back to the authentication service (running on the server) and figures out whether I am still logged into the site. If a timeout has occured the answer will be no. If that is the case I can show a login dialog. The problem I want to solve is that the authentication service consumes the password, and there is no way I can ever retrieve that password again. If the user logs into the site I want to store the password on the server, and return a token to the client side to match up with that password. I have some other services on the server side that need that password. So where should I store that password on the server? How can that be done? How does the WCF authentication store state?

• Porting WebGL game to iPhone's native OpenGL?

  We are developing a web game that uses WebGL for the two biggest parts of it. Working with HTML / CSS was too slow and too limited, so it's off the table. Thing is, iOS does not support WebGL publicly just yet, only on iAd. It is my guess Apple will eventually support it once the security issues they and Microsoft claim it has are fixed, and looks stable enough. Problem is, if Apple does not do this by the release of the next mayor iOS version, then we will have in our hands a mobile WebGL game that does not run. 6 months of development and testing to waste. So, questions: If that was the case, how viable (regarding amount of time) is it porting the WebGL part of the game to native iPhone OpenGL? I'm afraid that porting will take longer than the development of the game itself. I saw posts on Stack Overflow (like this) that suggested, on Android, adding the OpenGL interface manually to a WebKit element. It'd be slower than native. But either way... Is this something that could be accepted in the AppStore? Apple is very restrictive with these kind of stuff... Thank you all for your time!

• Is NSManagedObjectContext autosaved or am I looking at NSFetchedResultsController's cache?

  I'm developing an iPhone app where I use a NSFetchedResultsController in the main table view controller. Then, if before saving the context, I press cancel and go back to the main table view, nothing is shown as expected. However, if I restart the app, the object I created on the context shows in the main table view. How come? At first, I thought it was because the NSFetchedResultsController was reading from the cache, but as you can see I set this to nil just to test. Also, [context hasChanges] returns true after I restart. What am I missing here?

• Help with MySQL Query using CASE statement

  I am trying to group a number of customers together based on their "Head Office" or "Parent" location. THis works ok except for a flaw which I didn't forsee when I was developing my system... For customers that did not have a "Parent" (standalone business) I defaulted the parent_id to 0. Therefore, my data would look like this: id parent_id customer 1 0 CustName#1 2 4 CustName#2 - Melbourne 3 4 CustName#2 - Sydney 4 0 CustName#2 (Head Office) What I want to do is Group my results together so that I have one row for CustName#1 and one row for CustName#2 BUT my problem is that there is no parent record for parent_id=0 and these rows are being excluded when using an inner join. I've tried using a case statement but that is not working either (parents are still being ignored) Any help would be greatly appreciated. • Association and model data saving problem

  Developing with cakephp 1.3 (latest from github). There are 2 models bind with hasAndBelongsToMany: documents and tags. Document can have many tags in other words. I've add a new document submitting form there user can enter a list of tags separated with commas (new tag will be added, if not exist already). I looked at cakephp bakery 2.0 source code on github and found the solution.
