• How do I make dynamic windows in Swing?

  I have a general question. I would like to have a window containing some buttons, radio buttons, text fields and so on. So, user can do something (write text, select options and press buttons). As the result of the user activity window should change it structure/appearance some element should disappear and some appear. How do I program such "updates"? Should I close an old window and open a new one or I can modify content of window without closing it?

• Corona SDK - Make a character pass through a platform

  I'm building a game that has a character which should jump up on multiple platforms. The jumping functionality is done, but I would like if the character is just below a platform (static body), when I press the "jump" button, the character should pass through that platform and then sit on it. Right now it collides with the platform, and character cannot jump on it. Do you have any idea how this can be achieved? Right now the platforms are represented by rectangles with "static" body type: local platform = display.newRect( 50, 280, 150, 10 ) platform:setFillColor ( 55, 55, 55) physics.addBody ( platform, "static", {density=1.0, friction=1.0, bounce=0 }) And I was thinking if I could change, or remove the body type of platform when the character collids with it, so he can pass trough platform, but I don't know how to do this, or in general if this will work... maybe there are some built in techniques on how to achieve the effect I want?

• Generic type parameter naming convention for Java (with multiple chars)?

  In some interfaces i wrote I'd like to name generic type parameter with more than one character to make the code more readable. Something like.... Map<Key,Value> Instead of this... Map<K,V> But when it comes to methods, the type-parameters look like java-classes which is also confusing. public void put(Key key, Value value) This seems like Key and Value are classes. I found or thought of some notations, but nothing like a convention from sun or a general best-practice. Alternatives i guesed of or found... Map<KEY,VALUE> Map<TKey,TValue>

• Add 64 bit offset to a pointer

  In F#, there's the NativePtr module, but it seems to only support 32 bit offsets for its’ add/get/set functions, just like System.IntPtr does. Is there a way to add a 64 bit offset to a native pointer (nativeptr<'a) in F#? Of course I could convert all addresses to 64 bit integers, do normal integer operations and then convert the result again to nativeptr<'a, but this would cost additional add and imul instructions. I really want the AGUs to perform the address calculations. For instance, using unsafe in C# you could do something like void* ptr = Marshal.AllocHGlobal(...).ToPointer(); int64 offset = ...; T* newAddr = (T*)ptr + offset; // T has to be an unmanaged type Well actually you can't, because there is no "unmanaged" constraint for type parameters, but at least you can do general pointer arithmetic in a non-generic way. In F# we finally got the unmanaged constraint; but how do I do the pointer arithmetic?

  I'm fairly new to PHP/MySql and using queries in general. I was just wondering if there's any benefit to using "AS" in a query other than trying to make it look cleaner? Does it speed up the query at all? I probably could have figured this out by a google search but I wanted to ask my first question and see how this works. • iPhone SDK: How to add multiple labels to table cell?

  I am trying to create a custom table cell that conveys these data fields. a.) Name b.) Address1 c.) Address2 d.) Phone In the table cell these fields should appear centered one after another. Another requirement is that each of those fields be a different font and color. For that reason, I was thinking of creating labels and attaching them to the cell but I haven't had much luck getting this working. My question is, can this be done? If so, what is the general approach to follow? Any pointers or links to examples greatly appreciated.

• Variable pre-fixes, Visual Studio 2010 onwards?

  I'm a bit bewildered on this subject, as I relate variable prefixes to being a thing of the past now, but with Visual Studio 2010 onwards (I'm currently using 2012), do people still do this and why? I only ask because, these days, you can hover over any variable and it'll tell you the variable type and scope. There's literally no requirement for pre-fixing being there for readability. By this I mean: string strHello int intHello etc. And I'm being language/tool biased here - as Visual Studio takes a lot of the legwork out for you in terms of seeing exactly what type the variable is, including after conversions in the code. This is not a "general programming" question.

• How often does memcache on Google AppEngine lose data?

  Memcache in general and on AppEngine in specific is unreliable in the sense that my data may be deleted from the cache for whatever reason at any point in time. However, in some cases there might be cases where a small risk may be worth the added performance using memcache could give, such as updating some data in memcache that gets saved periodically to some other, more reliable storage. Are there any numbers from Google that could give me an indication of the actual probability that a memcache entry would be lost from the cache before its expiration time, given that I keep within my quotas? Are there any reasons other than hardware failure and administrative operations such as machines at the data centers being upgraded/moved/replaced that would cause entries to be removed from memcache prematurely?

• Does /boot safe on top of a lvm LV (logical volume)?

  Title already asked the question. More specifically, I read in some documents that logical volumes are nice in general but not for /boot in a linux system. They say that bootloaders don't understand LVM volumes, so create a separate partition for /boot out of lvm. I recently installed Ubuntu server (9.10) for my home server, but by default /boot is created in the LVM. Everything is fine now, but I am not sure it is safe to use /boot in LVM. Second question is do I really need a physical partition (volume)(pv) for /boot or is it equally fine if I put it into a logical volume (lv) on top of a single shared volume group.   I was wondering how to define a pointcut in aspecJ the captures any method of an interface but not the methods of any parent or sub interface. pubic interface A { void methodA(); } pubic interface B extends A { void methodB(); } pubic interface C extends B { void methodC(); } I would like a poincut that only catches methodB() and not methodA() or methodC(). Is there any way i can do this in a general way without listing all the sub and super interfaces in the pointcut?

• Having access to a private variable from other classes in Java

  If I want to create a form that adds people to a List, how do I have access to that List from another class? Where would I define that List so other classes can access the members, the size, etc? For example, if I have Class Foo that has the GUI for my form, along with buttons to add and remove people to the List, it would make sense to me to declare the List as a private instance variable of Class Foo. But then if I have another class, Class Bar, how does it get the values that are currently in that List to update some other graphical components? Or is that the wrong place to declare the List in general? Thanks.

  On Windows, no matter which framework you use, all the frameworks need, ultimately, to call the user mode user32::CreateWindowEx API to actually create a window on the desktop. On Ubuntu, or indeed Linux systems in general, it seems that the choices are to use a widget framework like Wx or Qt or GTK+ to create a GUI application, but all these frameworks feel like they are wrapping something more fundamental. Do these all talk directly to X on Linux? I thought Ubuntu was moving to a non X window manager, so what are they going to use then? What library would I use to access the window manager all these frameworks use?

• mod_rewrite: no ? and # in REQUEST_URI

  Hello. What I'm trying to do: have pretty URLs in the format 'http://domain.tld/one/two/three', that get handled by a PHP script (index.php) by looking at the REQUEST_URI server variable. In my example, the REQUEST_URI would be '/one/two/three'. (Btw., is this a good idea in general?) I'm using Apache's mod_rewrite to achieve that. Here's the RewriteRule I use in my .htaccess: RewriteRule ^/?([a-zA-Z/]+)/?$ /index.php [NC,L] This works really well thus far; it forwards every REQUEST_URI that consists of a-z, A-Z or a '/' to /index.php, where it is processed. Only drawback: '?' (question marks) and '#' (hash keys) seem to still be allowed in the REQUEST_URI, maybe even more characters that I've yet to find. Is it possible to restrict those via my .htaccess and an adequate addition to the RewriteRule? Thanks!

Currently, I but a try finally block around everywhere, where I create an object, to free that object after usage (to avoid memory leaks). E.g.: aObject := TObject.Create; try aOBject.AProcedure(); ... finally aObject.Free; end; instead of: aObject := TObject.Create; aObject.AProcedure(); .. aObject.Free; To you think, it is good practice, or too much overhead? And what about the performance?

• How do I create a certain control using Windows Forms in Visual C++?

  I am new to using Windows Forms in C++ (and just in general), and I am not exactly sure of the name or if it's even possible to do. Currently I am currently working on a school project in which we must make a program for an imaginary bookstore. I am trying right now to make a sort of list that shows what the "customer" is buying. I have to make it sort by price and ISBN and any other variable that the book has. In essence I am trying to make something like the following: I just need to know how to get started. I can't figure out what the name of the control is or how to even get it to sort every time the user clicks on the header.

• Is this a valid C statement ?

  Lets say I write char c[99] = {'Stack Overflow'}; in C or C++ it does compiles fine but does this valid? By valid I meant not invoking any kind of undefined or unspecified behavior. Again if I write char c[99] = 'Stack Overflow'; gcc complains about multicharacter constant which is obvious but in the above when I am enclosing within curly brackets compiler is happy! why is it so ? I also notice that puts(c); after the first statement will output 'w' precisely the last character of a general string in-place of Stack Overflow. why so ? Could somebody explain this behavior may be separately.

• iOS - How to pass information from the VIEW to the Controller?

  I am fairly new to programming in general, and have been following the CS193p videos on iTunesU. I am currently doing assignment 3, and am having trouble getting a bit of information from the View sent to the View Controller. I believe I have set up the whole delegation thing correctly, so the question really is to how to get my View Controller to see a bit of information (such as self.bounds.size.width), which is a property that only the View has. Would this involve using self.dataSource? And if so, through what means could I pass this bit of information? Thanks!!

• Java Web Application

  I am interested in creating a simple web application that will take in user input, convert it to an XML file and send the file to a database. Coding wise I feel I am okay, it is just the general setup and what implementation to use I am a bit unsure of. At the moment I have a JSP page containing a form, the user fills out the form and on submit a get method is sent to a servlet, in the servlet doGet() method the servlet is instantiating a java object and passing it the user inputted data. The java object then writes that data to an XML file and sends it to the database via REST. All I would be interested to know is if this the standard/optimal way of creating such a web application. Any and all feedback is appreciated. Thanks

• Detecting when Javascript is performing poorly

  I'm working on a webapp in jquery that, on older machines or machines without much resources, may perform poorly. To get around this I'd like to make a degraded version that disables some of the features, particularly those that rely on large images. How can I tell if my app is running poorly on the user's computer in jquery or javascript in general? I just need a way to call a function that will degrade the app. (especially when the user may run low on system memory) The only way I can think of is for manual user intervention, but the option would add clutter for users that don't need it and users that do need it may not notice it.   One of the biggest advantages of object-oriented programming is encapsulation, and one of the "truths" we've (or, at least, I've) been taught is that members should always be made private and made available via accessor and mutator methods, thus ensuring the ability to verify and validate the changes. I'm curious, though, how important this really is in practice. In particular, if you've got a more complicated member (such as a collection), it can be very tempting to just make it public rather than make a bunch of methods to get the collection's keys, add/remove items from the collection, etc. Do you follow the rule in general? Does your answer change depending on whether it's code written for yourself vs. to be used by others? Are there more subtle reasons I'm missing for this obfuscation?

  I am studying Backbone and the todo example apps from http://todomvc.com/ I have noticed there are 3 severals ways of starting the code in the files: $(function() { // code here }); $(function( $ ) { // code here }); (function() { // code here }()); I do not understand the differences and when I should use one over the other. I also saw some people using this to start their code: $(document).ready(function(){ // code here }); From what I have seen, this is the full way of writing it right? In a more general way, should I always include my javascript code into something like that in each files? Thanks for your advice.

• Downloading Spring Framework 3.2.x

  I'm looking at springsource community download site. It shows that 3.2.4 is the latest general release. Its zip file has dist suffix and the content is different than the latest in 3.1 branch 3.1.4 (which does not have dist ending). 3.1.4 has the following directories: dist projects src dist folder contains org.springframework...* jars. 3.2.4 has the following directories: docs libs schema lib folder contains spring-... jars Was there a major change between 3.1 and 3.2 releases? According to this accepted answer there was but I was not able to find anything about it. Does anybody have any particulars? Should I get 3.1.4 for now?

• Getting Error 91

  I have a general comprehension issue with classes and objects. What I'm trying to do is pretty simple but I'm getting errors. In the code example below, sometimes the line "Call tables.MethodInCTables" runs fine and sometimes it produces error 91, object not set. IN all cases, I can "see" the method in the type ahead so I know that the code recognizes the "tables" instance and "sees" MethodInCTables. But then I get the run-time error.
