• Model Driven Architecture Approach in programming / modelling

  I know the basics of the model driven architecture: it is all about model the system which I want to create and create the core code afterwards. I used CORBA a while ago. First thing that I needed to do was to create an abstract interface (some kind of model of the system I want to build) and generate core code later. But I have a different question: is model driven architecture a broad approach or not? I mean, let's say, that I have the language (modelling language) in which I want to model EXISTING system (opposite to the system I want to CREATE), and then analyze the model of the created system and different facts about that modeled abstraction. In this case, can the process I described above be considered the model driven architecture approach? I mean, I have the model, but this is the model of the existing system, not the system to be created.

• Oracle User Productivity Kit Translation

  Oracle's customers just love the User Productivity Kit (UPK). I hear only great things about it from our international customers at the Oracle Usability Advisory Board meetings too. The UPK is the perfect solution for enterprise applications training needs (I previously reviewed a fine book about UPK btw). One question I am often asked is how source content created using the UPK can be translated into another language. I spoke with Peter Maravelias, Principal Product Strategy Manager for UPK about this recently. UPK is already optimized for easy source-target translation already. There is even a solution for re-recording demos. Here's what you can do to get your source content into another language: Use UPK's ability to automatically translate events and actions. UPK comes with XML templates that allow you to accomplish this in 21 languages with a simple publishing action switch. These templates even deal with the tricky business of using gender-based translations. Spanish localization template sample Japanese localization template sample Use the Import and Export localization features to export additional custom content in a format like XLIFF, easily handled by translation tools. You could also export and import in Word format. Re-record the sound (audio) files that go with the recordings, one per screen. UPK's granular approach to the sound files means that timing isn't an option. Retiming demos isn't required. A tip here with sound files and XLFF-exported custom content is to facilitate translation context by avoiding explicit references to actions going on in the screen recordings. A text based storyboard with screenshots accompanying the sound files should also be provided to the translators. Provide a glossary of terms too. Use the re-record option in UPK to record any demo from a translated application. This will allow all the translated UI labels to be automatically captured. You may be required to resize any action events here due to text expansion issues. Of course, you will need translated data in the translated application too, so plan for this in advance. However, source-target language skills aren't required for the re-recording. The UPK Player itself, of course, is also available from Oracle along with content and doc in 21 languages. The Developer and Setup is also translated in a smaller number of languages. Check the Oracle UPK website for latest details. UPK is a super solution for global enterprise applications training deployments allowing source content to be translated into multiple languages easily. • What are best practices when giving a presentation to programmers?

  I've watched 50 plus presentations on programming topics, although most have been online; example, Google Tech Talks -- and have ad-hoc experience on what formats work for programmers, or practices to take into account when presenting to a group of programmers. • Excel Solver vs Solver Foundation

  I recently read a book http://www.amazon.com/Scientific-Engineering-Cookbook-Cookbooks-OReilly/dp/0596008791/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1296593374&sr=8-1 - the Excel Scientific and Engineering Cookbook.     The 2 main tools that this book leveraged were the Data Analysis Pack and Excel Solver. I had previously been aquanted with Microsoft Solver Foundation - this is a full fledged API for solving optimization problems, and went beyond being a mere Excel plugin - it exposed a C# programmatic interface for in process and a web service interface for out of process integration. were they the same? apparently not!   2 different solver frameworks for Excel: http://www.solver.com/index.html http://www.solverfoundation.com/ I contacted both vendors to get their perspectives.   Heres what the Excel Solver guys had to say:   "The Solver Foundation requires you to learn and use a very specific modeling language (OML). • Au revoir, Python?

  I'm an ex-C++ programmer who's recently discovered (and fallen head-over-heels with) Python. I've taken some time to become reasonably fluent in Python, but I've encountered some troubling realities that may lead me to drop it as my language of choice, at least for the time being. I'm writing this in the hopes that someone out there can talk me out of it by convincing me that my concerns are easily circumvented within the bounds of the python universe. I picked up python while looking for a single flexible language that will allow me to build end-to-end working systems quickly on a variety of platforms. These include: - web services - mobile apps - cross-platform client apps for PC Development speed is more of a priority at the time-being than execution speed. However, in order to improve performance over time without requiring major re-writes or architectural changes I think it's imperative to be able to interface easily with Java. That way, I can use Java to optimize specific components as the application scales, without throwing away any code. As far as I can tell, my requirement for an enterprise-capable, platform-independent, fast language with a large developer base means it would have to be Java. .NET or C++ would not cut it due to their respective limitations. Also Java is clearly de rigeur for most mobile platforms. Unfortunately, tragically, there doesn't seem to be a good way to meet all these demands. Jython seems to be what I'm looking for in principle, except that it appears to be practically dead, with no one developing, supporting, or using it to any great degree. And also Jython seems too married to the Java libraries, as you can't use many of the CPython standard libraries with it, which has a major impact on the code you end up writing. The only other option that I can see is to use JPype wrapped in marshalling classes, which may work although it seems like a pain and I wonder if it would be worth it in the long run. On the other hand, everything I'm looking for seems to be readily available by using JRuby, which seems to be much better supported. As things stand, I think this is my best option. I'm sad about this because I absolutely love everything about Python, including the syntax. The perl-like constructs in Ruby just feel like such a step backwards to me in terms of readability, but at the end of the day most of the benefits of python are available in Ruby as well. So I ask you - am I missing something here? Much of what I've said is based on what I've read, so is this summary of the current landscape accurate, or is there some magical solution to the Python-Java divide that will snuff these concerns and allow me to comfortably stay in my happy Python place?

• Google Webmaster Tools is showing duplicate URLs based on page title differences

  I have 700+ title tag duplicates showing in WMT. Every first link in that picture is as duplicate link of second one. I don't know from where the first link got indexed by Google when that link doesn't exist in the site. It's showing the title of every page as link. • C# Adds Optional and Named Arguments

  Earlier this month Microsoft released Visual Studio 2010, the .NET Framework 4.0 (which includes ASP.NET 4.0), and new versions of their core programming languages: C# 4.0 and Visual Basic 10. In designing the latest versions of C# and VB, Microsoft has worked to bring the two languages into closer parity. Certain features available in C# were missing in VB, and vice-a-versa. • Studies of Pair Programming on Translation Projects

  I am looking for information (ie, studies, metrics, etc) for pair programming when translating a project from an "older" language to a "newer" language. In this particular case, translating means line for line translation where ever possible, and only modifying the design when absolutely necessary, not when the modification would provide improved performance. I have performed pair programming in new development, and I am well aware of the pros and cons of pairing in that environment. However, I haven't been able to find any information in this particular case. Any help is appreciated.

• My integer overfloweth

  While certain classes like java.lang.Integer and java.lang.Math have been in the platform since the beginning, that doesn't mean there aren't more enhancements to be made in such places! For example, earlier in JDK 8, library support was added for unsigned integer arithmetic. More recently, my colleague Roger Riggs pushed a changeset to support integer overflow, that is, to provide methods which throw an ArithmeticException on overflow instead of returning a wrapped result. Besides being helpful for various programming tasks in Java, methods like the those for integer overflow can be used to implement runtimes supporting other languages, as has been requested at a past JVM language summit. This year's language summit is coming up in July and I hope to get some additional suggestions there for helpful library additions as part of the general discussions of the JVM and Java libraries as a platform.

• Why was Python's popularity so sudden? [closed]

  Python first appeared in 1991, but it was somewhat unknown until 2004, if the TIOBE rankings quantify anything meaningful. What happened? What caused the interest in this 13 year old language to go through the roof? Is there a reason that Python wasn't considered a real competitor to Perl in its first decade of existence? Is there a reason that Python didn't continue in relative obscurity for another ten years? I personally think that Python is a very nice language, and I'm glad that I'm not the only one. But it doesn't have corporate backing or a killer feature that would explain a sudden rise to relevance. Does anyone know the story?

• When there's no TCO, when to worry about blowing the stack?

  Every single time there's a discussion about a new programming language targetting the JVM, there are inevitably people saying things like: "The JVM doesn't support tail-call optimization, so I predict lots of exploding stacks" There are thousands of variations on that theme. Now I know that some language, like Clojure for example, have a special recur construct that you can use. What I don't understand is: how serious is the lack of tail-call optimization? When should I worry about it? My main source of confusion probably comes from the fact that Java is one of the most succesful languages ever and quite a few of the JVM languages seems to be doing fairly well. How is that possible if the lack of TCO is really of any concern?

• SSIS - The expression cannot be parsed because it contains invalid elements at the location specifie

  If you get the following error when trying to write an expression there is an easy solution Attempt to parse the expression "@[User::FilePath] + "\" + @[User::FileName] + ".raw"" failed.  The token "." at line number "1", character number "<some position>" was not recognized. The expression cannot be parsed because it contains invalid elements at the location specified. The SSIS expression language is a C based language and the \ is a token, this means you have to escape it with another one. i.e "\" becomes "\\", unlike C# you can't prefix the string with a @, you have to use the escaping route. In summary when ever you want to use \ you need to use two \\

• How can Swift be so much faster than Objective-C?

  Apple launched its new programming language Swift today. In the presentation, they made some performance comparisons between Objective-C and Python. The following is a picture of one of their slides, of a comparison of those three languages performing some complex object sort: There was an even more incredible graph about a performance comparison working on some encryption algorithm. Obviously this is a marketing talk, and they didn't go into detail on how this was implemented in each. I leaves me wondering though: how can a new programming language be so much faster? In this example, surely you just have a bad Objective-C compiler or you're doing something in a less efficient way? How else would you explain a 40% performance increase? I understand that garbage collection/automated reference control might produce some additional overhead, but this much?

• REPLACENULL in SSIS 2012

  While preparing my slides e demos for the forthcoming SQL Server Conference 2012 in Italy, I’ve come across a nice addition to DTS Expression language which I never noticed before and that seems unknown also to the blogosphere: REPLACENULL. REPLACENULL is the same of ISNULL in T-SQL. It’s *very* useful especially when loading a fact table of your BI solution when you need to replace unexisting reference to dimension with dummy values. • What are the main programmers web sites in other countries?

  Looking at the demographics of sites like this one, there seems to be a very heavy US weighing of users. I know there have been discussions about using English as a programmer, but the are some large countries with large programmer bases that must be using localized sites. Countries like Brazil and China, in particular, what sites do programmers go for discussions? Do a lot of the threads link up to English speaking sites like these? In France they obviously prefer their own language, what do the equivalent sites look like? I don't want to turn this into an English language speaking discussion like this one, it's more a general trans-cultural programming curiosity.

How well do these languages integrate with PHP? Is it relatively easy to write a plugin for a PHP CMS in them? How mature are their implementations and tools? Would you recommend them to someone who has to use a php cms but hates php?

• Is Haskell's type system an obstacle to understanding functional programming?

  I'm studying Haskell for the purpose of understanding functional programming, with the expectation that I'll apply the insight that I gain in other languages (Groovy, Python, JavaScript mainly.) I choose Haskell because I had the impression that it is very purely functional, and wouldn't allow for any reliance on state. I did not choose to learn Haskell because I was interested in navigating an extremely rigid type system. My question is this: Is a strong type system a necessary by-product of an extremely pure functional language, or is this an unrelated design choice particular to Haskell? If it is the latter, I'm curious what would be the most purely functional language that is dynamically typed. I'm not particularly opposed to strong typing, it has its place, but I'm having a hard time seeing how it benefits me in this educational endeavor.

• Can't decide between Java or Python for college [on hold]

  I'm returning to college in about a month for Computer Science. My problem is, I have been programming on the web since I left (4 years ago), using PHP, ASP.NET, and JavaScript. I want to bone up on a more general purpose language that is cross platform before I begin. I would also like to be using a language that is common at my school and I know that they teach the students C++, Java, and Python. I would like to choose between Java or Python but I'm not sure which one. What do you think would be better based on job prospects in the next 2 years and community?

• Star rating not showing in rich snippets

  We've recently been doing a lot of work on our site's SEO (www.betterthanreviews.com). We recently did a push to update the rich snippets breadcrumb, meta description, and star rating. After giving Google some time to index the site, it has updated the breadcrumbs and meta descriptions for our review pages, but the stars are still not showing. This is currently how it appears on a Google search (link to the actual page: http://www.betterthanreviews.com/home-security/livewatch): This is what the Rich Snippets is supposed to look like, and how it appears in Google's testing tool: More context: As seen in our html, we are using schema.org language. We initially were using schema.org/Corporation for the site, but we now have the page labeled as schema.org/HomeAndConstructionBusiness because Google will not show star ratings for the Corporation language. However, in our Webmaster Tools, the Structured Data is still showing the Corporation language, which could be a potential issue. Here is a look at some of the coding that we used. • Using WebStorm for Razor Syntax MVC

  I am building a lot of client-side heavy SPA-like apps with VS2010 and MVC3/4. VS2010 Javascript/HTML/CSS editing (mostly javascript) is interminably slow and sluggish. I'd love to use something like JetBrains' WebStorm to edit my .CSHTML files (with embedded javascript, etc. because I am using RAzor to pop in URL names, etc.) WebStorm seems to have all of the things I want.. better language recognition ("intellisense") and the ability to integrate additional outside libraries into this (I'm using Kendo), etc. Is this possible? How do you get WebStorm to recognize the @"" invoked Razor language inserts? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
