• Wrong statistics in AUX_STATS$ might puzzle the optimizer

  We do recommend the creation of System Statistics for quite a long time. Since Oracle 9i the optimizer works with a CPU and IO cost based model. And in order to give the optimizer some knowledge about the IO subsystem's performance and throughput - once System Statistics are collected - they'll get stored in AUX_STATS$. For this purpose in the old Oracle 9i days some default values had been defined - and you'll still find those defaults in Oracle Database 11g Release 2 in AUX_STATS$. But these old values don't reflect the performance of modern IO systems. So it might be a good best practice post upgrade to create fresh System Statistics if you haven't done this before.  You can collect System Statistics with: exec DBMS_STATS.GATHER_SYSTEM_STATS('start'); and end it later by executing: exec DBMS_STATS.GATHER_SYSTEM_STATS('stop'); You could also run DBMS_STATS.GATHER_SYSTEM_STATS('interval', interval=>N) instead where N is the number of minutes when statistics gathering is stopped automatically. Please make sure you'll do this on a real workload period. It won't make sense to gather these values while the database is in an idle state. You should do this ideally for several hours. It doesn't affect performance in a negative way as the values are anyway collected in V$SYSSTAT and V$SESSTAT. And in case you'd like to delete the stats and revert to the old default values you'd simply execute:exec DBMS_STATS.DELETE_SYSTEM_STATS; The tricky thing in Oracle Database 11.2 - and that's why I'm actually writing this blog post today - is bug9842771. This leads to wrong values in AUX_STATS$ for SREADTIM and MREADTIM by factor 1000 guiding the optimizer sometimes into the totally wrong directon. The workaround is to overwrite these values manually and divide them by 1000. Use the DBMS_STATS.SET_SYSTEM_STATS procedure. See this MOS Note:9842771.8 for the above bug for some further information. This issue is fixed in Oracle Database 11.2.0.3 and above. To get some background information about the statistics collected in please read this section in the Oracle Database 11.2 Performance Tuning Guide. And gathering System Statistics might have some implication if you have mixed workloads - and interacts with DB_FILE_MULTIBLOCK_READ_COUNT. For more information please read section 13.4.1.2.

• 50 Billion Served: Java Embedded on Devices

  It doesn't matter if it is 50 billion or 24 billion, just suffice it to stay that there will be MANY connected devices in the year 2020. With just 24 billion devices, they will outnumber humans six to one! So as a developer, you don't want to ignore this opportunity. What if you could use your Java skills and deploy an app to a fraction of these devices (don't be greedy, how about just, say, 118,000 of them)? Fareed Suliman, Java ME Product Manager had lots of good news for Java Developers in his presentation Modernizing the Explosion of Advanced Microcontrollers with Embedded Java at ARM TechCon in Santa Clara, CA last week. "A radical architecture shift is underway in this space, from proprietary to standards-based," he explained.  He pointed out several advantages to using Embedded Java for devices: Java is a proven and open standard. Java provides connectivity, encryption, location, and web services APIs. You don't have to focus on and keep reinventing the plumbing below the JVM. Abstracting the software from the hardware allows you to repeat your app across many devices. Abstracting the software from the hardware allows allows parallel development so you can get your app done more quickly. You already know Java (or you can hire lots of Java talent). Java is a full ecosystem, with Java Embedded plugins for IDEs like Eclipse and NetBeans. Java ME allows for in-field software upgrades. Suliman mentioned two ways developers can start using Java Embedded today:  Java ME Embedded Suite 7.0 Oracle Java Embedded Suite is a new packaged solution from Oracle (including Java DB, GlassFish for Embedded Suite, Jersey Web Services Framework, and Oracle Java SE Embedded 7 platform), created to provide value added services for collecting, managing, and transmitting data to embedded devices such as gateways and concentrators. Oracle Java ME Embedded 3.2 Oracle Java ME Embedded 3.2 is designed and optimized to meet the unique requirements of small embedded, low power devices such as micro-controllers and other resource-constrained hardware without screens or user interfaces. • Too many heap subpools might break the upgrade

  Recently one of our new upcoming Oracle Database 11.2 reference customers did upgrade their production database - a huge EBS system - from Oracle 9.2.0.8 to Oracle Database 11.2.0.2. They've tested very well, we've optimized the upgrade process, the recompilation timings etc.  But once the live upgrade was done it did fail in the JAVA component piece with this error: begin if initjvmaux.startstep('CREATE_JAVA_SYSTEM') then * ORA-29553: classw in use: SYS.javax/mail/folder ORA-06512: at "SYS.INITJVMAUX", line 23 ORA-06512: at line 5 Support diagnosis was pretty quick - and refered to:Bug 10165223 - ORA-29553: class in use: sys.javax/mail/folder during database upgrade But how could this happen? Actually I don't know as we have used the same init.ora setup on test and production. The only difference: the prod system has more CPUs and RAM. Anyway, the bug names as workarounds to either decrease the SGA to less than 1GB or decrease the number of heap subpools to 1. Finally this query did help to diagnose the number of heap subpools: select count(distinct kghluidx) num_subpools from x$kghlu where kghlushrpool = 1; The result was 2 - so we did run the upgrade now with this parameter set: _kghdsidx_count=1 And finally it did work well. One sad thing:After the upgrade did fail Support did recommend to restore the whole database - which took an additional 3-4 hours. As the ORACLE SERVER component has been already upgraded successfully at the stage where the error did happen it would have been fine to go on with the manual upgrade and start catupgrd.sql script. It would have been detected that the ORACLE SERVER is upgraded already and just picked up the non-upgraded components. The good news:Finally I had one extra slide to add to our workshop presentation

  Es gibt eine ganze Reihe an Oracle Tools für die Oracle Datenbank, die per Command Line Interfaces bedient werden können: Von RMAN über ADRCI, vom SQL*Loader über Export/Import, von SRVCTL über SQL*Plus. Und wie es sich für ordentliche Werkzeug gehört, besitzt auch (fast) jedes einzelne von ihnen eine eigene Hilfestellung. Wobei die Betonung eindeutig auf "eigene" liegt. Auch der ungeübte Benutzer wird sehr schnell merken, dass Oracle sich hier wohl nie so wirklich Gedanken darüber gemacht hat, die Hilfefunktionen zu vereinheitlichen - außer dass die Hilfe mehr oder weniger hilfreich ist. Die wohl interessanteste Ausprägung dieser Hilfefunktion ist hier sicherlich der RMAN, dessen umfangreiche Syntaxhilfe nur schwer zu erhalten ist - es sei denn man vertippt sich absichtlich. Solange man alles richtig macht (oder eben falsch, aber leider mit der richtigen Syntax) ist RMAN kein Hinweis über seine umfangreichen Syntaxchecker zu "entlocken". • RemoveHandler Issues with Custom Events

  This is a case of things being more complicated that I thought they should be. Since it took a while to figure this one out, I thought it was worth explaining and putting all of the pieces to the answer in one spot. Let me set the stage. Architecturally, I have the notion of generic producers and consumers. These put items onto, and remove items from, a queue. This provides a generic, thread-safe mechanism to load balance the creation and processing of work items in our application. Part of the IProducer(Of T) interface is: 1: Public Interface IProducer(Of T) 2: Event ItemProduced(ByVal sender As IProducer(Of T), ByVal item As T) 3: Event ProductionComplete(ByVal sender As IProducer(Of T)) 4: End Interface Nothing sinister there, is there? In order to simplify our developers’ lives, I wrapped the queue with some functionality to manage the produces and consumers. Since the developer can specify the number of producers and consumers that are spun up, the queue code manages adding event handlers as the producers and consumers are instantiated. Now, we’ve been having some memory leaks and, in order to eliminate the possibility that this was caused by weak references to event handles, I wanted to remove them. This is where it got dicey. My first attempt looked like this: 1: For Each producer As P In Producers 2: RemoveHandler producer.ItemProduced, AddressOf ItemProducedHandler 3: RemoveHandler producer.ProductionComplete, AddressOf ProductionCompleteHandler 4: producer.Dispose() 5: Next What you can’t see in my posted code are the warnings this caused. The 'AddressOf' expression has no effect in this context because the method argument to 'AddressOf' requires a relaxed conversion to the delegate type of the event. Assign the 'AddressOf' expression to a variable, and use the variable to add or remove the method as the handler.  Now, what on earth does that mean? Well, a quick Bing search uncovered a whole bunch of talk about delegates. The first solution I found just changed all parameters in the event handler to Object. Sorry, but no. I used generics precisely because I wanted type safety, not because I wanted to use Object. More searching. Eventually, I found this forum post, where Jeff Shan revealed a missing piece of the puzzle. The other revelation came from Lian_ZA in this post. However, these two only hinted at the solution. Trying some of what they suggested led to finally getting an invalid cast exception that revealed the existence of ItemProducedEventHandler. Hold on a minute! I didn’t create that delegate. There’s nothing even close to that name in my code… except the ItemProduced event in the interface. Could it be? Naaaaah. Hmmm…. Well, as it turns out, there is a delegate created by the compiler for each event. By explicitly creating a delegate that refers to the method in question, implicitly cast to the generated delegate type, I was able to remove the handlers: 1: For Each producer As P In Producers 2: Dim _itemProducedHandler As IProducer(Of T).ItemProducedEventHandler = AddressOf ItemProducedHandler 3: RemoveHandler producer.ItemProduced, _itemProducedHandler 4:  5: Dim _productionCompleteHandler As IProducer(Of T).ProductionCompleteEventHandler = AddressOf ProductionCompleteHandler 6: RemoveHandler producer.ProductionComplete, _productionCompleteHandler 7: producer.Dispose() 8: Next That’s “all” it took to finally be able to remove the event handlers and maintain type-safe code. Hopefully, this will save you the same challenges I had in trying to figure out how to fix this issue!

  On October 1st we held a new session of the Exadata & Manageability Partner Community in San Francisco. Thanks to all of you who participated in the event and very especially to the partner speakers who share their experiences with the rest of the community: Francisco Bermúdez (Capgemini Spain), Dmitry Krasilov (Nvision, Russia) and Miguel Alves (WeDo Technologies, Portugal)The slide decks used in the presentations are now available for download at the Manageability Partner Community Collaborative Workspace (for community members only - if you get an error message, please register for the Community first).In a few weeks we will be announcing the location for the next Community event in the spring timeframe.

• Elofordult már, hogy nehezen tudta értelmezni milyen patch-et is javasolt a támogató mérnök?

  Bevallom, Ügyfeleink bejelentéseinek monitorozása közben nem egyszer gondolkodóba estem, mit is jelentenek a PSE, MLR, One-off, és további gyönyöruséges kifejezések, melyeket a támogató mérnökök használnak. Nemrégiben bukkantam rá a My Oracle Suport-on a  Document ID 1430923.1 cikkre, melyben ezen kifejezések magyarázatát át tudjuk tekinteni. Szerencsére a leírásban szerepelnek a korábbi kifejezések is, mert én úgy látom vannak támogató mérnökök akik egyelore még a régi elnevezéseket használják. Ha már a javításokról esik szó, szeretném felhívni a figyelmet az Oracle Tech Error Correction Policy document-re is, mely nagyszeru áttekintést ad az Oracle bug javítási irányelveirol. Ebben a dokumentumban megtalálhatjuk a Release Schedule of Current Database Releases (Doc ID 742060.1)  és  Error Correction Support Timelines for Oracle Application Server (Fusion Middleware) (Doc ID 944866.1) cikkek hivatkozásait is melyeken belül akár az Adatbázis és Fusion Middleware termékek roadmap-jéig is eljuthatunk. Érdemes ezeket a cikkeket a My Oracle Support felületen kedvencnek megjelölni, hogy bármikor könnyedén elérhetok legyenek. A számunkra hasznos cikket a kedvencek közé a cikk címe melletti csillagra kattintva tehetjük kedvenceink közé és következo alkalommal a menüsorban talál csillagra kattintva varázsolhatjuk elo az alábbi képernyo részletek szerint.
