• Why do I get HTTP Code 414 on one network but not another?

  I have an otherwise working iPhone program. A recent change means that it generates some very long URLs (over 4000 characters sometimes) which I know isn't a great idea and I know how to fix -- that's not what I'm asking here. The curious thing is that when I make the connection using a 3G network (Vodafone UK) I get this HTTP "414 Request-URI Too Long" error but when I connect using my local WiFi connection it works just fine. Why would I get different results using different types of network? Could they be routing requests to different servers depending on where the connection originates? Or is there something else at stake here? The corollary questions relate to how common this is. Is it likely to happen whenever I use a cell network or just some networks?

• Setting package-wide variables during python setup.py install

  Is there a way that when a user types python setup.py install to install a Python package, setup.py can be made to set specific variables at the base of the pacakge? A common example would be to basically set mypackage.__revision__ to be the svn revision of the checkout if one is working from svn. Another example case would be if the user can choose a global option, so that the option mypackage.__option__ be set according to a flag passed to setup.py, e.g. python setup.py install --set-flag=10 Then when using the package, mypackage.__option__ would equal 10.

• Writing to the middle of the file (without overwriting data)

  In windows is it possible through an API to write to the middle of a file without overwriting any data and without having to rewrite everything after that? If it's possible then I believe it will obviously fragment the file; how many times can I do it before it becomes a serious problem? If it's not possible what approach/workaround is usually taken? Re-writing everything after the insertion point becomes prohibitive really quickly with big (ie, gigabytes) files. Note: I can't avoid having to write to the middle. Think of the application as a text editor for huge files where the user types stuff and then saves. I also can't split the files in several smaller ones.

• Is C# WebAPI worth it? Can I use standart MVC4 to create my API?

  I need to build a massive API and I'm trying out WebAPI instead of default MVC4 projects and it seems that it just makes things more difficult. Can have only 4 methods in controller Get, Post, Put, Delete, if I want more I need to modify route for that particular method FluentValidation won't work with WebAPI so I need to use DataAnnotations which I really don't want to. Can't use dynamic return data-types My question is: Would it really be that bad if I would use MVC4 project and use default ActionResults that return Json? What are real advantages of using WebAPI, why did they even made them in the first place if you can easily convert your project to API?

• Designing constructors around type erasure in Java

  Yesterday, I was designing a Java class which I wanted to be initalized with Lists of various generic types: TheClass(List<String> list) { ... } TheClass(List<OtherType> list) { ... } This will not compile, as the constructors have the same erasure. I just went with factory methods differentiated by their names instead: public static TheClass createWithStrings(List<String> list) public static TheClass createWithOtherTypes(List<OtherType> list) This is less than optimal, as there isn't a single obvious location where all the different options for creating instances are available. I tried to search for better design ideas, but found surprisingly few results. What other patterns exist for designing around this problem?

  I'm a front end Flex developer peeking over the wall at html. One of the things I have a hard time with is weak typing in Javascript. I know many developers say they prefer it. How do I stop worrying and learn to love the weak typing? Are there best practices for variable naming that help make var types human readable? Another thing I have trouble with is getting by without my trusted compiler errors and warnings. I'm getting along with firebug. Is there anything else I should have in my toolkit?

• FluentNhibernate dynamic runtime mappings.

  I am building a framework where people will be able to save items that the created by inheriting a class of mine. I will be iterating over every type in the appdomain to find classes that I want to map to nhibernate. Every class that I find will be a subclass of the inherited type. I know how to create sub types in FluentNhibernate, but every sub type requires its own ClassMap class. Since I won't know these untill runtime, there is no way I can do that. Is there a way that I can add mappings to fluent nhibernate? Note, I know this is possible without fluent nhibernate using the Cfg class, but I don't want to manage the same code two different ways.

  Hey. I am trying to make an integer match another integer by adding a number to one of them. I have tried several loop types, but none has worked. • Should I stick only to AWS RDS Automated Backup or DB Snapshots?

  I am using AWS RDS for MySQL. With it comes on backup, I understand that amazon provides two types of backup - automated backup and database (DB) snapshot. The difference is explain in here - http://aws.amazon.com/rds/faqs/#23. However, I am still confuse if should I stick to automated backup only or both automated and manual (db snapshots). What do you think guys? What's the setup of your own? I heard to others that automated backup is not reliable due to some unrecoverable database when the DB instance is crashed so the DB snapshots are the way to rescue you. If I will do daily DB snapshots as similar settings to automated backup, I have gonna pay much bunch of bucks. Hope anyone could enlighten me or advise me the right set up. Thanks. James

• Can my app arrange a gdb breakpoint or watch?

  Is there a way for my code to be instrumented to insert a break point or watch on a memory location that will be honored by gdb? (And presumably have no effect when gdb is not attached.) I know how to do such things as gdb commands within the gdb session, but for certain types of debugging it would be really handy to do it "programmatically", if you know what I mean -- for example, the bug only happens with a particular circumstance, not any of the first 11,024 times the crashing routine is called, or the first 43,028,503 times that memory location is modified, so setting a simple break point on the routine or watch point on the variable is not helpful -- it's all false positives. I'm concerned mostly about Linux, but curious about if similar solutions exist for OS X (or Windows, though obviously not with gdb).

  I have one class that declares an enumeration type as: public enum HOME_LOAN_TERMS {FIFTEEN_YEAR, THIRTY_YEAR}; Is this type usable in another class? I'm basically trying to complete a homework assignment where we have two types of loans, and one loanManager class. When I try to use the HOME_LOAN_TERMS.THIRTY_YEAR in my loanManager class that does not extend or implement the loan class, I get an error saying it 'cannot find symbol HOME_LOAN_TERMS.' So I did not know if my loanManager class needed to implement the two different loan classes. Thanks.

• Is there a good Open Source xml ide?

  I've looked around, and I'm surprised that I can't find an Open Source equivalent to Oxygen or XMLSpy. i.e. A rich XML editor with support for diverse types of validation, XSLT debugging and profiling, and all the other extra bits that make it more than just a text editor with syntax highlighting. I've seen a few (like Jaxe), that that offer different ways to edit xml documents, but nothing that rolls it all up into an IDE-like application. I'm sure this means I've missed some very worthy project. Can anyone point me towards such a thing?

The statement can be used to retrieve different types of objects with a given set of characteristics and possibly linked to other objects. • Prevent mapping all public members of a class in Fluent NHibernate

  I have a class generated from a WSDL that has a bunch of public properties and a public event. I'm extending this class with my own and adding some properties to it. All of my own properties are declared virtual, but the base class properties are not virtual. I'm using Fluent NHibernate's ClassMap to map only the properties from my extended class. How do I prevent (Fluent)NHibernate from trying to persist all the base class's public members? • How to mark a method as "ignore all handled exception" + "step through"? Even when user has selected

  I want to mark a method as "debug step through" even if an exception is thrown (and catched within) the function. This is because 99% of the times I know this function will throw an exception (Assembly.GetTypes), and since this function is in a library I wish to hide this normal exception. (Why did MS not add an exceptionless GetTypes() call?) I have tried this but it still breaks the code when debugging: [DebuggerStepThrough] [DebuggerStepperBoundary] private Type[] GetTypesIgnoreMissing(Assembly ass) { Type[] typs; try { typs = ass.GetTypes(); } catch (ReflectionTypeLoadException ex) { typs = ex.Types; } var newlist = new List<Type>(); foreach (var type in typs) { if (type != null) newlist.Add(type); } return newlist.ToArray(); } Anyone know of a way to make this method 100% stepthrough even if ass.GetTypes() throw an exception in debug mode? • Is it safe to display user input as input values without sanitation?

  Say we have a form where the user types in various info. We validate the info, and find that something is wrong. A field is missing, invalid email, et cetera. When displaying the form to the user again I of course don't want him to have to type in everything again so I want to populate the input fields. Is it safe to do this without sanitation? If not, what is the minimum sanitation that should be done first? And to clearify: It would of course be sanitized before being for example added to a database or displayed elsewhere on the site.

  I've used boost::gregorian::date a bit now. I can see that there are the related months & years & weeks duration types. I can see how to use known durations to advance a given date. Qu: But how can I get the difference between two dates in months (or years or weeks) ? I was hoping to find a function like: template<typename DURATION> DURATION date_diff<DURATION>(const date& d1,const date& d2); There would need to be some handling of rounding too.

• What are alternatives to standard ORM in a data access layer?

  We're all familiar with basic ORM with relational databases: an object corresponds to a row and an attribute in that object to a column (or some slight variation), though many ORMs add a lot of bells and whistles. I'm wondering what other alternatives there are (besides raw access to the database or whatever you're working with). Alternatives that just work with relational databases would be great, but ones that could encapsulate multiple types of backends besides just SQL (such as flat files, RSS, NoSQL, etc.) would be even better. I'm more interested in ideas rather than specific implantations and what languages/platforms they work with, but please link to anything you think is interesting.

I am aware of escaping - you have to escape in the code but it converts the escaped quotes back to regular quotes when it hits the browser.   I've been writing C# for seven years now, and I keep wondering, why do enums have to be of an integral type? Wouldn't it be nice to do something like: enum ErrorMessage { NotFound: "Could not find", BadRequest: "Malformed request" } Is this a language design choice, or are there fundamental incompatibilities on a compiler, CLR, or IL level? Do other languages have enums with string or complex (i.e. object) types? What languages? (I'm aware of workarounds; my question is, why are they needed?) EDIT: "workarounds" = attributes or static classes with consts :)

(Tree ?) rotateR tree = case tree of Fork q (Fork p a b) c -> Fork p a (Fork q b c) As I understand, first line is something like Tree-type declaration (but I don't understand it exactly). Second line includes pattern matching (I don't understand as well why do we need to use pattern matching here). And third line does something absolutely unreadable for non-haskell developer. I've found definition of Fork as fork (f,g) x = (f x, g x) but I can't move further anymore.
