• Apps not starting on Mac OS X Lion

  I have a strange problem, some apps that I download do not launch. There are 2 scenarios The application starts but keeps bouncing, once I click the bouncing icon in the tray it disappears. The process also closes in activity monitor The application fails to start, how ever many times I launch it, it refuses. • Ideal laptop specs for a Computer Science Masters student?

  I have a HP pavillion core 2 duo 2 GHz and 4 GB RAM, and it is painful to use this machine for any kind of coding. Eclipse (especially Juno) literally takes 5 minutes to load. And even after that, everything is lagy. Apart from school stuff, I also use my computer as a television. I watch Hulu, Netflix, YouTube etc in 720p, and this laptop gets hot as hell and the fans are loud enough to wake somebody up from deep sleep. I DON'T use my laptop for Gaming or Video/Photo Editing. I'm looking to buy a new laptop (in which most widely used IDEs would work smoothly and playing hi-def videos wouldn't be too much for the machine to handle) any suggestions (on hardware specs) would be greatly appreciated. • Choosing a home network layout

  I have a server, 4 PC's, a network printer, a switch and an ADSL modem. Currently the server runs Red Hat 9 and sits between the internet and the other PCs like in http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/12/Sample-network-diagram.png I have bought a new server PC to replace the old one, and I plan to install Fedora Core linux on it. The server acts as web and file server. The PCs all run Windows. Alternatively, I could connect the new server and all PCs to the switch, and connect the switch to the modem. (Sorry, couldn't find an image.) What are the pros and cons of these network layouts? Eg. in terms of reliability, security and flexibility? I am not a Linux guru but know of (and am not afraid of) iptables, dhcpd et al. Thank you for any tips, pointers and links.

  I'm backing up a linux server to a windows share. I'm currently mounting the windows share with cifs and using rsync for incremental backups. File permissions and ownership are not being preserved, as should be expected after reading this samba document: The core CIFS protocol does not provide unix ownership information or mode for files and directories. Because of this, files and directories will generally appear to be owned by whatever values the uid= or gid= options are set, and will have permissions set to the default file_mode and dir_mode for the mount. How can I achieve my goal of preserving unix file permissions while writing to a windows share? Is there another network file system that would allow me to do this? Thanks.

  I better consult first the people here before I do anything unnecessary using this app called giga tweaker. I don't really understand what this increase the performance of your CPU thing. It is under Customization-Memory Management-ram & disk cache of giga tweaker. What will happen if I change the level cache size of l2 cache into the highest possible value which is 8Mb. What are the negative effects of doing it? The file system caching memory, still under Customization-Memory Management-ram & disk cache. What effects will it have on my system which has 2Gb of Ram and 2.50 Ghz of Dual Core CPU. Please enlighten me.

• What is the specific advantage of a blade server for virtualisation?

  We are planning to implement a VDI Solution. We had some discussions about Blade vs Rack. As we are only planning to implement 75-100 Clients, we calculated, that we would need 2 Servers with Dual 8C Processors - and a shared storage server. This calculation is based on a paper by ORACLE, that says, 12 active virtual machines per core. Now, for buying to servers, a blade does not scale financially. But the Blade has some other advantages: a) The interconnectivity between the blades is super-fast. b) IO Virtualisation Are there other advantages, that we should consider, that would make up for price - and are this advantages so important, that we should think about investing in the blade?

VPNC command request the input data from the user, IPSec gateway : IPSec ID: IPSec Secret: Username: Password: So, my requirement is, can i connect the VPN server through any single command?. • What version of Windows Server 2008 to Get

  One of the projects I'm working on is looking like we're going to need to migrate from CentOS 5.4 over to something else (we need to run Postgresql 8.3+, and CentOS/RHEL only support 8.1), and one of the options will be Windows Server. Since 2008 R2 is out that's what I'm looking at. I'll need to run Postgres and Tomcat and don't really require anything that Windows has like IIS (if I can run Server Core, even better!). The other kicker is it will be virtualized through VMWare ESXI 4.0 so that we have three separate boxes: development, Quality, and Production servers. From a licensing standpoint though, and I good enough with just the Web Server edition? Am I right in assuming that will be three licenses? Or should I just jump up to Enterprise so that I get 4 VM licenses?

• Unable to log into samba server

  I am unable to log into a samba server (running on fedora core 6) as it prompts for a username and password when I try to connect to the mapped drives from my windows 7 machine. I decided to reset the password using the command smbpassword paddy and when I list users using check the pdbedit -L -v I see that the password was updated at the time I made this change. However, I am still unable to log in. The log file in /var/log/samba/log.paddy shows: [2012/10/11 09:55:54.605923, 1] smbd/service.c:678(make_connection_snum) create_connection_server_info failed: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED [2012/10/11 09:55:54.606635, 1] smbd/service.c:678(make_connection_snum) create_connection_server_info failed: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED How can I resolve this so that I can log in?

• How to Configure Different Gateways for Different VLANs

  I have around 10 VLANs, and two different internet gateways. I want traffic on some VLANs to use one gateway, and traffic on other VLANs to use another gateway. (e.g. I wish to route server traffic via one gateway and desktop internet traffic down another). Is it possible to configure different default routes for different VLANs on a Dell 6224 switch? Or is their a better way of doing what I'm trying to achieve? The core switch I am using is a Dell PowerConnect 6224 switch. Currently I'm using: ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.58.3.16 which creates the default gateway for all VLANs. I did consider adding multiple routes with equal metric, and setting ACLs between the VLANs to deny access to the 'wrong' gateway, but that idea just doesn't feel right to me.

• Trouble with external monitor under Windows 7 on MacBook Pro Boot Camp

  I'm running Windows 7 32-bit on a mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro Intel Core i5 under Boot Camp. I've had trouble getting it to work with my second display and searching Google for an appropriate answer has failed me. I'm on the latest version of Boot Camp - 3.2 - and have updated the drivers for the NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M. The monitor is connected via a VGA cable, and is a Dell ST2410. The monitor is recognised by Windows, which knows it's a Dell and its resolution. The desktop should be extended onto the second monitor - however nothing is showing. It remains black, though it doesn't show a lack of signal coming through which I would have expected. Any ideas what's wrong?

• teamviewer display is slow to refresh

  I'm using teamviewer from time to time to connect my portable computer with my desktop computer when I need to check on something (personal use). One of the main things I've been noticing is that it is quite slow transfering the screen updates that keep happening. This happens more frequently when I'm moving full windows or when I open a window or when watching a small movie clip. I've tested the lowest maximum p2p speed I ever got in the last week between both and it is the desktop's upload speed of 6MB/s with the ping of 40ms (usually ~15 ms). With this I was expecting to have very sharp image and fast transfer speeds which is not what is happening. Just to clarify, both computer's individual core's CPU is not reaching its peak (25%) while teamviewer is active, so the encryption and decryption is not the cause. Why my connection between both computers so slow?

• How to troubleshoot slow powerconnect 62xx management interface

  Our Dell Powerconnect 62xx switches have a very high packetloss on the management interface. I presume this is caused by a new appliance which uses multicast for communication but I am not sure. Our network setup is following: servers a - Dell PC6248 | servers b - Dell PC6248 |- juniper core router servers c - Dell PC6248 | What we see is that the multicast traffic arrives at all servers (but only the servers b use the multicast) and I fear that this multicast traffic floods the switch management interface. The switches' management interfaces are reachable via vlan101, all other traffic is sent over other vlans. When I tcpdump on one of the 2 servers with a vlan 101 ip address, I only get a few arp requests but almost nothing. When I try to ping between these 2 servers, it works like a charm. I would like to know what a good way is to troubleshoot this problem and maybe help me understand what is going wrong on that subnet.

• windows 7 frequently crashes when running 64 bit debian on virtualbox

  I've been having some hard times with Virtualbox. I use it to run 64-bit Debian guest on a Windows 7 host to be able to code for linux systems. It generally crashes when I build my code in eclipse cdt, or if I am doing some intensive operations. Should I lower the memory and core usage? Is this some sort of virtualbox problem? I upgraded to virtualbox v4.1.8 and the problem still occurs. My virtual machine instance uses 1736MB out of 4GB of ram, and I use 2 out of 8 processor cores. But still, the whole thing crashes 1 or 2 times every single day.

• USB Hub powers down in sleep mode on Win 7 64

  This question has been asked before but not answered. I would like the USB hub to remain on in sleep so I can wake up the laptop from an external keyboard and mouse. I have set all the device drivers by unchecking allow this device to be powered down and disabled selective suspend in control panel but the hub still powers down. If I plug a keyboard or mouse directly in to the PC they remain powered and wake the computer its only when they are connected through the hub there is a problem. I have another PC running Win 7 32. If I set this up in exactly the same way the hub remains powered in sleep. Both PC's are Toshiba Satellites with multi-core celerons but one runs Win 7 32 the other Win 7 64. BIOS settings are the same. Any help would be appreciated even confirmation that this is a feature of Win 7 64.

  I have following in cpuinfo: processor : 0 vendor_id : AuthenticAMD cpu family : 15 model : 107 model name : AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+ stepping : 2 According to Wikipedia page there are two kinds of 5600+ -- one of 90nm technology, another of 65nm. How can I understand which one I have? There seem to be no direct correspondence between contents of cpuinfo and info on Wikipedia page. AMD site seems to use some other naming scheme for processors too. How can I map values of family, model and stepping from cpuinfo to the data available on Wikipedia/AMD?

  Hi, I'm trying to connect to my HP/UX machine from Mac OS X using Xnest. The problem is that I can not get the keyboard to work. I can see the login-prompt, but unable to type in my username. • How to decide the optimal number of ruby thin/mongrel instances for a server, number of cores?

  We are trying to deploy mongrel instances on a machine. What is the optimal number of mongrel instances for a server? Since an instance can handle concurrent connections, I do not see any benefit in starting more than 1 per core. Any more than that and the threads will just fight for CPU. Our predecessors have assigned 10 instances for 4 cores, but I think it will just cause CPU contention. Any definitive answers / opinions? I have seen this question: How many mongrel instances? But it is really not specific enough.

  I'm configuring a brand new HPC server and am interested in using SmartOS because of it's virtualization control and zfs features. Does this configuration make sense for a SmartOS HPC, or would you recommend an alternative? System Specs: 2x 8-core xeon 384 GB RAM 30 TB HDs with 2x512GB SSDs Uses: - zfs for serving data to different vms, and over the network; 1 SSD for L2ARC and 1 for ZIL - typically 1-2 ubuntu instances running R and custom C/C++ code My biggest concerns as a newbie to SmartOS and ZFS are: (1) will I get near-metal performance from ubuntu running on SmartOS if it is the only active vm? (2) how do I serve data from the global zfs pool to the containers and other network devices?

  Recently I bought an Intel Core i7 Dell laptop fully integrated. I have an ATi Radeon 1 gb ram graphic card and so on. Everything works fine even the brightness, but when I try the multi touch multi finger(touchpad which enables two or more finger) the pointer jump and go there and go here and so It's very annoying because when I'm trying to write this question I cannot let the pointer be cool! when I accidentally the touchpad it is very annoying. It's not my first time installing it, but it's the first time having two annoying problems: 1) Randomly, the system clock changes time all by itself - to fix it I have to open the time window and sync it with the internet. 2) Randomly, internet connection stops working - to fix I have to run troubleshooting. Windows will find a problem with IP on the "Ethernet" connection and fix it. 3) In rare occasions, my PC freezes and I need to restart it (a BSOD once happened, but after that only freezes) How can I permanently solve these problems?   I am looking for advice, comments and suggestions from anyone who has used Windows RRAS (2008 R2 Pref.) as the primary routers for our multiple offices. We have multiple physical office locations and are looking into utilizing Windows Server 2008 R2 Core as redundant Active/Active routers/gateways for our network as opposed to a physical router from Cisco or Juniper, it costs a lot less! Any problems, issues or documentation anyone would recommend? We will still most likely have a firewall on the edge but the majority of our traffic will be inter-office with some external services. We will be using multiple Class B networks across our two offices.

  There seems to be little information about the way activation system works in Windows 8, especially for consumer versions of Windows (Core/Pro, not Enterprise). I already know that Microsoft now requires you to enter a key before even starting the installation process, and that it tries to connect to the Internet and activate this key as soon as possible. Sometimes, though, you don't have Internet connection when installing Windows 8. What then? Can you install Windows? Can you use it? What are the limitations? For how long can you keep your copy of Windows usable without activation?
