• Agile team with no dedicated Tester members. Insane or efficient?

  I'm a software developer. I've been thinking a lot about the efficiency of the Software Testers I've worked with so far in my career. In fact, I've been thinking a lot about the Software Testers role in general and have reached a potentially contentious conclusion: Non-developer Software Testers staff are less efficient at software testing than developers. Now, before everyone gets upset, hear me out. This isn't mere opinion: Software Testing and Software Development both require a lot of skills in common: Problem solving Thinking about corner cases Analytical skills The ability to define clear and concise step-by-step scenarios What developers have in addition to this is the ability to automate their tests. Yes, I know non-dev testers can automate their tests too, but that often then becomes a test maintenance issue. Because automating UI tests is essentially programming, non-dev members encounter all the same difficulties software developers encounter: Copy-pasta, lack of code reusibility/maintainability, etc. So, I was wondering. Why not replace all non-dev roles with developer roles? Developers have the skills required to perform Software Testing tasks, and they have the skills to automate tests and keep them maintainable. Would the following work: Hire a bunch of developers and split them into 2 roles: Software developers Software developers doing testing (some manual, mostly automated by writing integration tests, unit tests, etc) Software developers doing application support. (I've removed this as it is probably a separate question altogether) And, in our case since we're doing Agile development, rotate the roles every sprint or two. Also, if at all possible, try to have people spend their Developer stints and Testing stints on different projects. Ideally you would want to reduce the turnover rate per rotation. So maybe you could have 2 groups and make sure the rotation cycles of the groups are elided. So, for example, if each rotation was two sprints long, the two groups would have their rotations 1 sprint apart. That way there's only a 50% turn-over rate per sprint. Am I crazy, or could this work? (Obviously a key component to this working is that all devs want to be in the 3 roles. Let's assume I'm starting a new company and I can hire these ideal people) Edit I've removed the phrase "QA", as apparently we are using it incorrectly where I work.

• Changing AdWords campaign structure

  I've been running a campaign for about a year and a half now and the campaign has been setup by location. I'd have one campaign targeted for a specific region. And then I would duplicate the ad groups for each campaign. I have 5 ad groups targeting different areas of my business). This has worked reasonably well. It just occurred to me that it might easier if the campaign structure were reversed: 5 campaigns: each campaign focused on a different area of business and divided into 20+ adgroups (based on location). Will this screw up my campaign if I switch the structure? I have 10's for QS and I don't want to lose that!

• Will a standard CMS on a shared web hosting account work for this?

  I have two questions concerning CMS's that I need answered if possible: I need to create a site with a Database. This site will in due time have lots of traffic and many users if things go as planned. Is it better to have the CMS on a shared web hosting account or is it better to have a dedicated server for this? The site I want to create needs to be able to create groups where each group has its own admin. The admin of the group decides the content that each member can view/access. The information of one group can be shared to other groups as well. This means that only the information content is shared but not the group's member data. Should I use a single or multiple databases for this problem? Is this something that can be done using standard CMS systems out there. or should I try to build one myself?

  We have a requirement to delete a group of files that are older than the specified number of days from the company file share. Due to the complex folder hierarchy and delicate nature of the data stored in these files, this task has to be originated from SQL Server. • handling long running large transactions with perl dbi

  I've got a large transaction comprising of getting lots of data from database A, do some manipulations with this data, then inserting the manipulated data into database B. I've only got permissions to select in database A but I can create tables and insert/update etc in database B. The manipulation and insertion part is written in perl and already in use for loading data into database B from other data sources, so all that's required is to get the necessary data from database A and using it to initialize the perl classes. How can I go about doing this so I can easily track back and pick up from where the error happened if any error occurs during the manipulation or insertion procedures (database disconnection, problems with class initialization because of invalid values, hard disk failure etc...)? Doing the transaction in one go doesn't seem like a good option because the amount data from database A means it would take at least a day or 2 for data manipulation and insertion into database B. The data from database A can be grouped into around 1000 groups using unique keys, with each key containing 1000s of rows each. One way I thought I could do is to write a script that does commits per group, meaning I've got to track which group has already been inserted into database B. The only way I can think of to track the progress of which groups have been processed or not is either in a log file or in a table in database B. A second way I thought could work is to dump all the necessary fields needed for loading the classes for manipulation and insertion into a flatfile, read the file to initialize the classes and insert into database B. This also means that I got to do some logging, but should narrow it down to the exact row in the flatfile if any error occurs. Both these methods is just variations on the same theme, and both require going back to where I've been tracking my progress (in table or file), skip the ones that've been commited to database B and process the remaining data. I'm sure there's a better way of doing this but am struggling to think of other solutions. Is there another way of handling large transactions between databases that require data manipulation between getting data out from one and inserting into another? The process doesn't need to be all in Perl, as long as I can reuse the perl classes for manipulating and inserting the data into the database.

• iPhone: Repeating Rows in Each Section of Grouped UITableview

  I'm trying to learn how to use the UITableView in conjunction with a SQLite back end. My issue is that I've gotten the table to populate with the records from the database, however I'm having a problem with the section titles. I am not able to figure out the proper set up for this, and I'm repeating all tasks under each section. The table looks like this. The groups field is where I'm trying to pull the section title from. • WebSphere Plugin Keystore Unreadable by IHS - GSK_ERROR_BAD_KEYFILE_PASSWORD

  Running WAS 6.1.xx in a network deployment. The IBM provided plugin keystore's "plugin-key.kdb" password expires on april 26th along with the personal cert inside it. So no problem right? Create new cert and set new password on the kdb, restash the password and off we go! Well no! I can open the keystore using the new password with ikeyman and keytool. Using some "slightly dodgy" script, I can reverse the stash file and see that indeed the new password is set. Then, even if I restore the old keystore files (plugin-key.kdb,plugin-key.crl,plugin-key.sth,plugin-key.rdb) they no longer work either! So it must be permissions right? Well the permissions are the same as before, if I switch to apache user I can browse right through to the files and read them. I have even chown'ed them to apache:apache and/or chmod 777 and still its the same error! Does anyone have a clue what is going on here? Its pretty urgent as our site will be without HTTPS in a couple of days if this isn't resolved - thats bad for a retail web site :)

• High CPU usage by 'svchost.exe' and 'coreServiceShell.exe'

  I am having a laptop running on Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit. Since past few days, my laptop is facing a serious problem. Whenever I connect to Internet, either svchost.exe or coreServiceShell.exe or both hog the CPU. The coreServiceShell.exe consumes a lot of RAM also. Going into the details, I found that high CPU usage of svchost.exe is caused by Network Location Awareness service. And the high CPU usage of coreServiceShell.exe is caused by Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security 2012. That kind'a makes me think that Trend Micro may be the root of the problem. After further testing, I found that if I use IE or Firefox to browse the Internet, immediately after connecting to Internet, things are normal. See and But if I use Google Chrome, the coreServiceShell.exe hogs both CPU and RAM. At this point, if I disconnect the Internet, the CPU and RAM usage by coreServiceShell.exe continues to be high till I close the Chrome. Also, when I close the Chrome, while Internet is connected, svchost.exe continues to hog CPU but coreServiceShell.exe leaves the race. That makes think that Chrome is the root of the problem, but again, tracing coreServiceShell.exe takes me back to Trend Micro Internet Security. Stopping the Protection by the Trend Micro Internet Security doesn't help either (I am not able to stop its services though). I have updated the Chrome, but no help. I just can't figure out who is the culprit. I can't do without the Google Chrome (of course, by not using it) because of its immensely useful and indispensable features both during browsing and development. Secondly, I can't uninstall the Trend Micro Internet security Suite since it still has few months before it expires and is proving me reliable protection. What could be the cause of the problem and what can I do to resolve this? Thanks in advance

• Installed SQL Server 2008 and now TFS is broken.

  Hi, My W2K3 server was running TFS 2008 SP1, SQL Server 2005 Development edition. I installed SQL Server 2008 Standard. I installed it while leaving SQL Server 2005 alone. Upgrading was not possible due to the differences in editions of the SQL Servers. Now TFS is broken. On a client computer, if I go Team - Connect to Team Foundation Server, I get this error: Team Foundation services are not available from server myserver. Under Application, I see one warning and two errors. • List of Hidden / Virtual Windows User Accounts

  I’m trying to find a way to get a comprehensive list of user accounts on a Windows 7 system, including hidden ones. The User Accounts dialog (>control userpasswords2) only shows the normal user accounts, and even the Local User and Groups editor only shows normal user accounts and standard hidden/disabled ones like Administrator and Guest. The Select Users or Groups dialog has a Find Now button which which combines users and groups, but alas, it has the same contents as the LUG. I’m looking for a more comprehensive list that includes “super-hidden” / virtual user accounts like TrustedInstaller (or to be more accurate, NT Service\TrustedInstaller—notice the different “domain”). I checked HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserList, but the SpecialAccounts key does not exist. I also checked HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList, and while it does have the SystemProfile, LocalService, and NetworkService accounts listed, it does not have others (like TrustedInstaller and its ilk). TrustedInstaller specifically is a little confusing because it is a user, a service, and an executable file. I am using it as an example because it is “super hidden” in that it does not seem to be listed in any sort of user list. (As an experiment, I tried searching the whole registry for “trustedinstaller” to see if I could find a place where it is listed as a user, but found none.) To be clear, what I am looking for is a list of all accounts that can be used in a user input-field such as in permissions dialogs or as a runas argument.

  I have made a bash command which generates a one liner for restarting all Weblogic ( 8,9,10) instances on a server /usr/ucb/ps auwwx | grep weblogic | tr ' ' '\n' | grep security.policy | grep domain | awk -F'=' '{print $2}' | sed 's/weblogic.policy//' | sed 's/security\///' | sort | sed 's/^/cd /' | sed 's/$/ ; cd .. ; \/recycle_script_directory_path\/recycle/ ;' | tr '\n' ' ' To restart a Weblogic instance, the recycle ( /recycle_script_directory_path/recycle/) script needs to be initiated from within the domain directory as the recycle script pulls some application information from some .ini files in the domain directory. The following part of the script generates a line to cd to the parent directory of the app i.e. the domain directory sed 's/$/ ; cd .. ; \/recycle_script_directory\/recycle/ ;' | tr '\n' ' ' I am sure there is a better way to cd to the parent directory like cd dirname but every time i run the following cd command , it throws a "Variable syntax" error. cd $(dirname '/domain_directory_path/app_name') How do i incorporate the cd to the directory name in a better way ? • Cisco 891w multiple VLAN configuration

  I'm having trouble getting my guest network up. I have VLAN 1 that contains all our network resources (servers, desktops, printers, etc). I have the wireless configured to use VLAN1 but authenticate with wpa2 enterprise. The guest network I just wanted to be open or configured with a simple WPA2 personal password on it's own VLAN2. I've looked at tons of documentation and it should be working but I can't even authenticate on the guest network! I've posted this on cisco's support forum a week ago but no one has really responded. • OpenVPN Bridge LAN-to-LAN Configuration?

  I'm trying to configure an OpenVPN bridge LAN-to-LAN setup. Currently, I have the OpenVPN bridge Server/Client setup up running. On the server-side my br-lan interface has tap0, eth0, and wlan0 in the bridge group. On the client-side the br-lan interface has eth0 and wlan0 in the bridge group, the client tap0 is outside of the br-lan group. Currently the two bridge groups are connected via the wlanO interfaces (server-side is the Access Point - AP and the client-side is the wireless client). My goal is to connect the two bridge groups with a wireless VPN pipe. My network configuration: Server: br-lan: 10.4.96.50 Client: br-lan: 10.4.96.75 tap0: 10.4.96.100 <---- issued by the VPN server. Unfortunately, I'm stuck with using a bridge instead of a routed OpenVPN setup. My question is how (if possible) do I add the client tap0 interface to the client bridge group, as to ensure all traffic between the server/client bridge groups is using the VPN pipe? • Pure-FTPD accounts and permissions for websites

  I'm having trouble setting up the appropriate Pure-FTPD accounts and permissions - I have the following sites setup up on my Debian server. /var/www/site1 /var/www/site2 /var/www/wordpress The permissions are 775 for folders and 664 for files. The owner is currently admin:ftpgroup Wordpress also requires special permissions for file uploads in /var/www/wordpress/wp-content/uploads What I need is: a general admin group with access to /var/www a group for each site (site1, site2, wordpress) and a group or user, not www-data (?), with permissions to write files to the wordpress upload folder I ask because restrictions on linux groups (can't have groups in groups) makes it a little bit confusing and also because many of the tutorial sites have conflicting information like, some recommend the use of www-data and some don't. Also, I'm not sure if I understand how Pure-FTP is supposed to work exactly. I create a Pure-FTPD account and assign it a directory (/var/www) and a system user (ftpuser) and group (ftpgroup): Can I assign more than 1 path? For example, if a user requires access to 2 sites. Is it better to assign ftpgroup to all ftp locations and let Pure-FTPD manage account access? Why would anyone have more than 1 ftpuser or ftpgroup? (Doesn't it mean users have access to everyone else's files if they could get there?) Sorry for so many questions at once. I've been reading lots of tutorials but I think they've ended up making me more confused!

  Running Windows Small Business Server 2011 I have a file structure with a lot of sub folders (sometimes 5-6 levels deep). I have created access groups to grant access to my users, and also deny groups to deny access to others. X Access & X Deny. These allow or deny access to a mapped network drive X: On the server I put in the groups with Full Control Allow for X Access and Full Control Deny for X Deny, I also tick the box "Apple these permissions to objects and/or containers within this container only" and have ensured that "Apply to:" is "This folder, subfolders and files". But for some reason the permissions will only apply to the next level of folders & files. ex. structure: X: Folder 1 Folder 1a Folder 2 Folder 2a If I apply the permissions to X: it'll only go to Folder 1 & 2, not 1a and 2a, I then need to manually apply the permissions to these too. Is this working as intended or am I doing something wrong?
