• Advantages of Terminal Server instead of normal client-Server installation?

  What are the advantages of using a (Windows) Terminal Server and thin clients instead of using a normal Server and full clients? So far I've only really used normal servers and clients, but now customers ask about terminal Server, and I'd like to know pro's and con's of using them instead of an "old-fashioned" client-server network. Some things I can guess: easier administration (don't need to install/update office/stuff on 20 computers but only on the server). Easier backup (no need to backup client computers). And I'd guess it would be hard (impossible) to connect and use local (like USB) hardware with Terminal Server? What else are the reasons for or against switching to Terminal Server?

• Is it possible (and safe/reliable/non-damaging) to use a 20-pin ATX PSU with a 24-pin ATX motherboar

  I have a reasonably-decent old 20-pin PSU which I want to use on a newer 24-pin ATX motherboard. I see that the ATX page on wikipedia mentions that 24-pin ATX is backward-compatible, and I can find 20-to-24 pin adapters to buy for a couple of dollars/pounds at lots of places, but I can't find any mention of restrictions on the use of these. Will this work on any motherboard, or is it a per-motherboard compatibility question? Are there any other restrictions like the level of power available (and hence the additional 4 pins with +12, +5 and +3.3V lines which are already on other pins)?

• AT&T DSL 2701HG-B Modem, port forwarding to RealVNC

  Our old cable modem could easily be set up to forward an "incoming port request" to the RealVNC software. Allowing us to log into our home computer from any location. We don't see any such configuration possiblity with our new AT&T DSL 2Wire 2701HG-B modem. (And it appears to have 2 entirely different 'set up screens'. Why?) Where is the screen that allows "forward incoming request for a certain port", to a certain computer, and direct it towards RealVNC"?

• HP ProLiant Smart Array "lock up" code 0x11

  I've a ProLiant DL580 G7 server that experienced a storage subsystem failure during production. The system appeared available and responded to pings, but all I/O access stalled (the system load must have been 100+). The ASR did not trigger at the specified watchdog timeout. I had to force a reboot from the ILO. During POST, I received the following error: A controller failure event occurred prior to this power-up. (Previous lock up code = 0x11) I haven't pulled the ADU report yet, but I'm curious as to what this error actually means. I was not responsible for the the installation, but can see that the firmware is very old. But if there's anything else I should know about the error, I'd like to know for the post-mortem report. edit - I should add that the server had 95 days of uptime prior to the lock up.

  I have a cPanel installed on a CentOS server and it includes an old version of Mysql. Has anyone tried upgrading Mysql to 5.5 on a cPanel managed server? If so, I would really like some guidance. I read, on the cPanel forum, that it's not supported and one user complained, after manually upgrading his version of Mysql, cPanel automatically removed it, but that was a long time ago. Also, I'm a newbie to Linux, so please forgive any dumb questions. Help... Thanks.

• Windows 8 - IE 10 Metro - How to print or save a webpage

  I'm running Windows 8 Pro. My default browser is Internet Explorer 10 (and hence opens as a Modern Windows 8 app). I want to know how to print or save a webpage. There are no related settings available in the browser. The only option is to select "View on Desktop" and the browser interface familiar to IE 9 opens up on the desktop, through which I could access the above said options and additional settings. I know the Desktop is not going away anytime soon and that its still an important part of Windows. But if Microsoft is pitching for the Modern Windows UI, why would they leave out important options such as print & save from it and force a user to access the "old" Desktop mode for the same? Even Windows 8 RT supports plug-and-play access to Printers & Peripherals. So not being able to Print from a tablet or access the File System is definitely not an answer.

• scheduled chkdsk on Windows 7 blinking the hard disk light every 5 seconds, what can I do?

  PG&E (the local electricity company) came and took out the old power meters and put in a new ones by brute force and with no advance notice in our neighborhood, so my computer went down in power. So I went to Windows 7's drive C and schedule a Disk Cleanup (chkdsk) on the next boot up. When it boots up, it says A disk check has been scheduled To skip disk checking, press any key within __ second(s). and then after it shows To skip disk checking, press any key within 1 second(s). it just sits there, with no further message. the hard disc light blinks every 5 seconds. So what is to be done now? I certainly don't want to brute force power off again.

• Dreamweaver Files uploaded to Win 2008 server cause login prompt

  I have a customer who uses a 4 year old version of Dreamweaver to edit her webpages. My hosting reseller account is with a company that uses Windows Server 2008. Every time my customer edits a page and uploads it, I have to set the permissions for that file to be readable, manually from the site's control panel. The customer is furious with me because her files cause the login prompt. I am able to upload files myself that remain readable to the site with both Filezilla and with Frontpage. I am assuming that her Dreamweaver settings are the cause of the problem but I don't have that program myself and don't know what to advise her. Any suggestions?

• Dual Screens with Widescreen monitors?

  I want to build a new computer and purchase new monitor(s). At my old job I had two 20" 4:3 and I absolutely loved this setup. However, the stores in my country only seem to have widescreen monitors nowadays, and the only 4:3 LCDs i have been able to find are 17". My question is: Do widescreens suck for using them as dual monitors? Can anyone with this setup comment on their experience with having multiple widescreen monitors? Would it be better to get three 17" 4:3 LCDs instead of two widescreens? If i go with widescreens, should i go with the smallest ones i can find? Purchasing a single big widescreen monitor is not an option for me, since being able to maximize an app on a specific area of the screen is a must have for me and im not willing to use "hacky" apps for this purpose that do a crappy job. • How do I revert back to windows 8 from 8.1?

  I hate the new windows 8.1 search. I mean a truly loathe it. It's easily the absolute worst thing Microsoft has ever made (including bing and IE). I asked how to get the old search back and the answer was that you can't. Honestly, I haven't noticed any changes from 8 - 8.1 besides a single tile has changed color (dunno why, the color doesn't even match the icon), and I really hate this new search thing. So how do I get 8 back?

• Issue with user having a gmail account and Google Apps account using same email/username

  Greetings! We have a user in our organization that had been using her email address at our domain at her username for gmail.com We recently moved our folks on to Google Apps, and have just moved our email server over to Google (IMAP/SMTP). I'm having all kinds of trouble only with this user's account with her sending and receiving email via the new Google mail server and wondering if it's because of her existing Gmail account. So her email address with us is [email protected], which is her login/user id with us on our Google Apps site. She still has her gmail identity tied to that same [email protected]. She's ok with deleting her old Gmail account...if I do so however will it goof things up for her going forward with us on the Google Apps site? Will she not be able to receive email? Thanks! Joshua

• Running .net application over a network

  Hello, I need some advice please. I need to enable a .Net application to run over a network share, the problem is that this will be on clients network shares and so the path will not be identical. I've had a quick look at ClickOnce and the publish options in VS2008 but it wants a specific network share location - and I'm assuming this location gets stored somewhere when it does its thing. At the moment the job is being done with a old VB6 application and so gets around all these security issues, but that application is poorly written and almost impossible to maintain so it really needs to go. Is it possible for the domain controller to be set up to allow this specific .Net application to execute? Any other options would be welcomed as I want to get this little application is very business critical. I aught to say that the client networks are schools, and thus are often quite locked down as are the client machines, so manually adding exceptions to each client machine is a big no no. Marlon

• Creative software leftovers - ASIO error message

  I temporarily installed an old Creative Audigy 2 soundboard on my Vista x64 Home Premium computer. Bad idea! I uninstalled the board & all software visible on the control panel. Now, with one particular app. (Sibelius) I keep getting a start-up message "CTASIO Warning: Creative ASIO: there are no Creative audio products installed on the system that support ASIO". I offer this as a candidate for "Most useless message", but that's beside the point. I used a commercial registry cleaner (PC-Tools Registry Mechanic) and then edited the registry looking for "creative", "audigy" and "ASIO". After removing everything I could find, I still get the message. Any suggestions?

• Thin virtual host [migrated]

  My work setup relies on old Windows XP. Now, when Windows XP isn't supported by new hardware, it's getting harder and harder to buy a notebook on which Windows XP can run natively with all essential hardware (wireless cards, graphics, sound etc). Since I don't expect my personal setup to turn away from Windows XP any time soon, I'm investigating the following trick: why not buy any decent hardware which Linux can fully utilize, and use it as a virtual host for a guest session with e.g. Windows XP. I like using hibernation, so I prefer this Linux to be as thin as possible, only enough to support VirtualBox, KVM or any other virtualization software. Question: Are there any "standard" ways to do this, like Linux distributions aimed specifically on being light virtualization host?

• VMWare Headphone Issue

  I am running VMWare Workstation Version 7 on a Windows 7 partition on a Macbook Pro. I have built a virtual XP machine within vmware to run some old music programs. The sound from my virtual machines comes out of my macbook speakers but the volume is not controllable using my macbook volume controls, only by using the volume control on the XP machine. My problem is that i need to use headphones, and when i plug a headphone jack into my macbook, the sound from my vmware virtual machines still comes out of the macbook speakers. I am baffled.   I'm gonna skip the usual rant which normally follows upon mention of the words "Word 2007" I have a numbered section. Which has page numbers. Then, I insert a new section break at the end of the current section ... go to page numbers, format ..., and "start at ...", and the new section then has a new page numbering (starting with some other number). But, how do I after inserting a new section break, remove the page numbering in the new section ? If I go to remove page numbers option, Word removes the numbers from the new, but also from the old section (i.e. all of them). Help ... time is short ...

• computer and User Account Migrated using ADMT but not sending mail

  I have successfully migrated a User and Computer account using ADMT. The user is able to login to the computer with the new account and is able to open outlook receive mail but is not able to send internal or external mail. The Exchange server is still in the Old domain. The bounce back message received was that the user doesn't have permissions to send to the recipient. When I migrated the user I did migrate the SID history so why is mail not being about to be sent? The body of the bounce back message is as follows: Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients. Subject: test Sent: 1/6/2010 4:17 PM The following recipient(s) could not be reached: User, user on 1/6/2010 4:17 PM You do not have permission to send to this recipient. • OS specific network delay, why?

  Since my new ISP installed their own router to my house(I rented a room in a student house so don't have much control on these), I started having strange delays. Any outgoing connection I do, be it http or ssh, is delayed for several seconds, and once it is established, I have no further problems. I open several simultaneous tabs in my browser and after about 5 to 8 seconds, they all connect and load simultaneously and quiet fast. I can actually play online games once I connect.What's more interesting is, I experience this only with Linux distros, namely Arch and some versions of Ubuntu. Access with Windows installs are quiet normal. What might be wrong with my router? Everything was fine with my old router but I have to use this one now.

• How do I use Compiz on Linux to achieve what WinSplit revolution does on Windows?

  Hi there, I've used WinSplit Revolution for quite some time on Windows and have become attached to it. I'm now trying out a Linux OS (Ubuntu 10.04) and would really like to get the same functionality back again. After searching on the net I found a "grid" plugin (http://wiki.compiz.org/Plugins/Grid) for compiz which says that it was inspired by WinSplit revolution. I haven't installed the Grid plugin yet, because under the install section on that page, it says "Note that grid is now included in compiz so you're unlikely to need to fetch from git unless you've an old version of compiz", which would seem to suggest that the grid functionality has now been built into compiz somewhere. The thing is, I don't know where to find it in the CompizConfig Settings Manager nor how to set it up. All I want to have happen is that I get identical functionality to WinSplit revolution, where I press Ctrl + Alt + [some numpad key] to position a window on a screen and press Ctrl + Alt + [left or right arrow] to shift a window between dual screens.

• new monitor won't work on win3.1

  My old system monitor for my Windows 3.1 machine failed and the new flat screen has a sync error. The new monitors do not support the refresh/screen size it is set to. It boots up into Windows and the monitor is blank with a sync error. Without Windows 3.1 working I don't know how to change the refresh/size to get it to work. I haven't used Win3.1 in so long that I can't remember how to fix this. So, how do I reset the refresh rate and screen resolution it is set to, without being able to actually see anything?

• Copying Firefox profile

  My computer (well, Windows XP) failed. I got everything off the HD, including my Firefox profile, which I especially wanted because I had lots of open unsaved tabs in my current session (yes, I know that's bad practice!), but also to rescue bookmarks etc. I've now got Windows 7, and reinstalled Firefox. I've read the instructions on the Firefox website about creating new profiles, and I'm not sure they're very intuitive. It says that you can copy all the contents from an old profile into a new 'default' one, which I have done (http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-Firefox-profiles). However, when I open Firefox, the data from this profile isn't being used and Firefox doesn't seem to recognise the data that's there. What am I doing wrong?!

• Running Windows without administrative rights?

  Hello, Among the millions of applications written for Windows, I assume there are probably quite a lot that are too old or too sloppy to run without administrative rights. To convert users to using non-admin accounts in their day-to-day use of Windows, I need a tool that will sort applications between those than can run safely as non-admin and those that expect to have those rights and will thus show some obvious or not-so-obvious wrong behavior as a result. Does someone know of such a tool that would be available for XP/Vista/7, and either scan the whole disk for unsafe applications, or would be started at boot time and lurk in the background so that it would show a pop-up and report applications that triggered an error because of this lack of admin rights?   I have created a simple batch file script for running Robocopy. It is set to make a backup of my user account folder to my external hard drive. The size of my user account directory is 18.3 GB but the backup of it occupies over 30 GB. After reading the contents of the log generated, it is obvious that it's copying files more than once. Why is this happening? I'm running Windows Seven Home Premium 64-bit.

• Netgear FVX538v2 slow whene connected to Canoga Perkins N525 ETSU

  First of all thank you in advance for helping me. my issue is the old network admin found a problem whene he connected the firewall and the ETSU together the through put went down to less than 1 mega bit a second. his fix was to add a dlink router between the firewall and the etsu which speed it up to 5 mega bits a second. now my boss wants a more clean and proper solution if possible. i have check all the settings in the netgear it dose not seem to be a setting issue. if anyone can help that would be great.
