  • I need to move part of my website to another web server, how can I do this and keep the same Domain

    I need to move a section of my website to another server because it is taxing our current web server. However, I cannot afford to lose page rank on any pages within the section of the site that must be moved. Furthermore, the URL of the pages must not be changed... visitors must still see the same URL, even though it would be served up by different hardware from a different data center. How can this be accomplished? Thanks

  • Determining Azure SQL Database requirements

    I'm looking into moving an SQL Server database project to the cloud using Azure SQL Database. I'm just wondering what metrics I can use from SQL Server to help determine what my needs will be on Azure. The size of the database is around 150GB, so I understand what my needs are in terms of storage, I'm just not sure what metrics I can use to translate my database usage to the DTU benchmark metrics that the various service tiers on Azure SQL use.

  • Please help with 'System.Data.DataRowView' does not contain a property with the name...

    My application works just fine until, in some unidentified conditions, it begins throwing this errors: When these errors start appearing, they appear in all over the application, no matter the code is built using ObjectDataSource or SqlDataSource. However, apparently, if the code uses some "classic", code-behind data-binding, that code does not throw errors (they do not show in the application event log), the page is displayed but it does not contain any data.... Please HELP tracking these very strange errors !!!!!!   • Instance validation error: '2' is not a valid value for QueryType. (web service)

    I have a web service that I am passing an enum public enum QueryType { Inquiry = 1 Maintainence = 2 } When I pass an object that has a Parameter of QueryType on it, I get the error back from the web service saying that '2' is not a valid value for QueryType, when you can clearly see from the declaration of the enum that it is. I cannot change the values of the enum because legacy applications use the values, but I would rather not have to insert a "default" value just to push the index of the enum to make it work with my web service. It acts like the web service is using the index of the values rather than the values themselves. Does anybody have a suggestion of what I can do to make it work, is there something I can change in my WSDL?

  • Should we use Visual Studio 2010 for all SQL Server Database Development?

    Our company currently has seven dedicated SQL Server 2008 servers each running an average of 10 databases. All databases have many stored procedures and UDFs that commonly reference other databases both on the same server and also across linked servers. We currently use SSMS for all database related administration and development but we have recently purchased Visual Studio 2010 primarily for ongoing C# WinForms and ASP.NET development. I have used VS2010 to perform schema comparisons when rolling out changes from a development server into production and I'm finding it great for this task. We would like to consider using VS2010 for all database development going forward but as far as I understand, we would have to set up ALL databases as projects because of the dependencies on linked servers etc. My question is, do you have any experience using VS2010 for database development in a similar environment? Is it easy to use in tandem with SSMS or is it a one way street once VS2010 projects have been set up for all databases? Can you make any recommendations/impart any experience with a similar scenario? Thanks, Luke

  • How can I disable keep-alive on ASP.NET Web Service client requests?

    I have a few web servers behind an Amazon EC2 load balancer. I'm using TCP balancing on port 80 (rather than HTTP balancing). I have a client polling a Web Service (running on all web servers) for new items every few seconds. However, the client seems to stay connected to one server and polls that same server each time. I've tried using ServicePointManager to disable KeepAlive, but that didn't change anything. The outgoing connection still had its "connection: keep-alive" HTTP header, and the server kept the TCP connection open. I've also tried adding an override of GetWebRequest to the proxy class created by VS, which inherits from SoapHttpClientProtocol, but I still see the keep-alive header. If I kill the client's process and restart, it'll connect to a new server via the load balancer, but it'll continue polling that new server forever. Is there a way to force it to connect to a random server each time? I want the load from the one client to be spread across all of the web servers. The client is written in C# (as is the server) and uses a Web Reference (not a Service Reference), which points to the load balancer.

  • How to best implement Version Control for Web Development?

    Version control systems are obviously important in development projects but there use in web development projects appears to be more complex, what with the requirement of having a web server to run all but the simplest of web applications. With that in mind, I have looked around and discovered a few different methods of using version control in web development projects: Provide each developer with a virtual machine which is a replication of the development server and have the developer run their working copy of the application in the virtual machine. Have each developer use a sub domain on the development server, e.g. john.project.com and checkout their working copy of the app to the directories the sub domain points to. Use the version control system to checkout code, make a change, commit the code and then check it on the development server (which points to the head of the repository). I can see a drawback of 1 being the added time required to create the virtual machines and ensure that the virtual machines are kept insync with the development server (also the need(?) to continuously change the developers host file to point at the virtual machine not the development server). I can see 2 possibly being a problem if absolute URLs are used within the site unless there is an easy way to update the configuration to use the new subdomains as well. 3 is the easiest to set up but is rather primitive and it will presumably become quite tedious for a developer to keep checking in the code after every time change. How have the users of stackoverflow used version control with web development projects and which method/workflow was most effective. Please also include extra methods I haven't thought of / read about.

    i am currently a mainly web developer, but is quite attracted to the performance and great integration with the OS (eg. Windows 7, Jump Lists, Taskbar Thumbnails, etc) something like WPF/C# can provide to the user, improving workflow and productivity. privacy and performance seems like a major downside of web/cloud apps compared to desktop apps. applications on the cloud/web work on the go, increased popularity of smartphones/netbooks majority of users may not benefit as much from increased performance of desktop apps, eg. internet surfing, word processing, probably benefit more from decreased startup times, lower costs and data on the cloud desktop applications increased performance benefits power users like 3D rendering, HD video/photo editing, gamers (i wonder if such processing maybe offset to cloud processing) integration with OS increases productivity (maybe such features can be adapted to a web version? maybe with a local desktop app to work with Web App API) more control over privacy (maybe fixed by encryption?) local data access (esp. large files) guaranteed and fast (YouTube HD fast enough most of the time) work not affected by intermittent/slow/availability internet connections (i know this is changing tho) what do you think?

    What things should a programmer implementing the technical details of a web site address before making the site public? If Jeff Atwood can forget about HttpOnly cookies, sitemaps, and cross-site request forgeries all in the same site, what important thing could I be forgetting as well? I'm thinking about this from a web developer's perspective, such that someone else is creating the actual design and content for the site. So while usability and content may be more important than the platform, you the programmer have little say in that. What you do need to worry about is that your implementation of the platform is stable, performs well, is secure, and meets any other business goals (like not cost too much, take too long to build, and rank as well with Google as the content supports). Think of this from the perspective of a developer who's done some work for intranet-type applications in a fairly trusted environment, and is about to have his first shot and putting out a potentially popular site for the entire big bad world wide web. Also: I'm looking for something more specific than just a vague "web standards" response. I mean, HTML, JavaScript, and CSS over HTTP are pretty much a given, especially when I've already specified that you're a professional web developer. So going beyond that, Which standards? In what circumstances, and why? Provide a link to the standard's specification.   • How can I use System.Web.Caching.Cache in a Console application?

Instead of re-inventing the wheel, I'd like to use System.Web.Caching.Cache (and that's a final decision, I can't use other caching framework, don't ask why). However, it looks like System.Web.Caching.Cache is supposed to run only in a valid HTTP context.     We are deploying web parts to SharePoint 2007 and would like to include logging (log4net). The ideal solution would be to use a database appender to avoid the problems with knowing which actual server is executing the web part. This questions has been helpful: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/219668/sharepoint-and-log4net. I've got log4net working in a stand-alone web app using Visual Studio dev server using the web.config for the log4net settings and a file appender for the output. I'd like to transition to SharePoint and still use the log file output so I can make sure it's all working first, then change the config around to log to a database. Is this going to be too much trouble? How have other developers added log4.net into their solutions for SharePoint?

  • What is a Web Framework ? How does it compare with LAMP

    I started web development in LAMP/WAMP and it was logical to me . There is a Web Server program called Apache which does the networking part of setting up a service on port 80 ( common port ) . If the request is regular HTML it uses the HTTP headers to transport files .And if the request for the file is a PHP one , it has a mod_php with which Apache invokes the PHP interpreter to process the file and it gives back HTML which is again transferred as usual HTML . Now the question is what is a Web Framework ? I came across Python based website creation and there is Flask . What is a flask , how does it compare with LAMP . Further are DJango / Ruby on Rails different from flask ? Can someone answer me and also give some good places to read on these .Thanks for your answers in advance . Further is things like LAMP slower than the common FRAMEWORKS because they claimn easy deplyment fo web apps .
