  • overheating when using flash

    - by Ben
I am having overheating issues when watching flash videos. Here is all the relevant information that I could think of. Please help. --Often when playing flash videos it operates at 95 degrees C. --Only gets that hot when on full screen (but still in the 80s otherwise) --Sometimes reaches 100 degrees and shuts down. --fan runs at around 4500 RPM when hot (not to mention I can here it speed up) --Happens under Ubuntu 12.04 and 12.10 (did not use Ubuntu before then) --Overheating happens on more than one site (for example youtube and Comedy Central) --My computer does not overheat otherwise. --Usually runs around 50-60 degrees C. --Maybe if compiling or doing updates can it get to 70 or 75 degree C. --Have a dual boot, and under Windows I do not have this issue. --I use firefox, but have the same issue if using Chrome --I have a Lenovo T410, currently running Ubuntu 12.10 --Intel® Core™ i5 CPU M 540 @ 2.53GHz × 4 --4 GB of memory, 64 bit OS --Graphics: NVS 3100M/PCIe/SSE2 Thanks and let me know if you need more info, Ben

  • Fix overlapping partitions

    - by Alex
    I have problem with overlapping partitions. GParted shows me all my disk as unallocated area, output of fdisk below: alex@alex-ThinkPad-SL510:~$ sudo fdisk -l /dev/sda Disk /dev/sda: 320.1 GB, 320072933376 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 38913 cylinders, total 625142448 sectors Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes Disk identifier: 0xfb4b9b90 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 * 2048 2457599 1227776 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT /dev/sda2 2457600 571351724 284447062+ 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT /dev/sda3 571342846 604661759 16659457 5 Extended /dev/sda4 604661760 625137663 10237952 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT /dev/sda5 598650880 604661759 3005440 82 Linux swap / Solaris /dev/sda6 571342848 598650879 13654016 83 Linux Partition table entries are not in disk order Do I understand correctly that overlapping partitions are sda2 and sda3 (sda2 and sda6 overlaps too, because sda6 is the first chunk of sda3, sda3 has type "extended")? Are sda2 and sda3 the cause of problem? How can i fix it without deleting partitions? My OS is Ubuntu 12.04, 64 bit. Thanks in advance.

  • Login screen restarts while entering password

    - by Shane L
I am having a problem that only occurred after installing the fglrx proprietary driver through the additional drivers app. The exact same issue is described in this question, however it's closed. Must login twice before entering Unity; first login screen has graphical anomalies When I boot up my computer, once I get to lightdm login screen I will start typing my password, and upon the entering of two of my password characters "n2" the screen will start displaying some corruption in the very top edge of the screen, then after I hit the number 2, lightdm seems to crash and it will restart and everything is fine, I can login from that point. So the issue is, every time I reboot, I have to login once, allow lightdm to crash and restart, then login as normal. The issue did not occur prior to installing fglrx, and has happened through several reinstalls.

  • How can I run sudo gedit as gksu gedit

    - by SimplySimon
I'm looking into ways of automatically loading Gedit as gksu gedit when I enter sudo gedit by mistake? I have found that I have made a number of files unreachable by using gedit and I have only just found out why! ACHIEVED SO FAR I have written a script which will make an alias so that if I type in sudo <application> it can automatically convert that to gksu <application> but I want to make this alias stick, so that I don't have to run the script every time I boot the computer. Is there a config file I can edit or should I run this script as a start up script (which would be inconvenient!)?

  • DIY Coffee Table Arcade Hides Retro Gaming Inside

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
Last week we showed you a nifty man-cave arcade-in-coffee-table build that was a bit, shall we say, exposed. If you’re looking for a sleek build that conceals its arcade-heart until it’s game time, this clean and concealed build is for you. Courtesy of IKEAHacker reader Sam Wang, the beauty of this build is that other than the rectangle of black glass in the center of the table–which could just as well be a design accent–there is no indication that the coffee table is a gaming machine when not in use. Slide out the drawers and boot it up, however, and you’re in business–full MAME arcade emulation at your finger tips. Hit up the link below to check out his full photo build guide. • Freeing disk space on Ubuntu to use in Windows

    - by Alex
I have 250Gb drive on a laptop, which has Windows 7 on a 122Gb ntfs partition (which has a "boot" flag on it) and Ubuntu 12.04.1 on a 110Gb extended partition, of which the root ext4 partition is 108Gb and the swap is 1.74Gb. You can see everything in the screenshot below. My question is: I want to diminish the size of the linux root partition and then use that space to increase the windows partition. How do I do that? Also, is it possible to increase the size of the swap partition and not do any damage? If so, how? I'm using GParted, and i'd say i'm pretty confident with it. Screenshot of my partitions

  • How Curiosity Took Its Self Portrait [Video]

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
There was enough confusion among the public as to how exactly the Curiosity Rover was able to photograph itself without the camera arm intruding into the photo that NASA released this video detailing the process. For those readers familiar with photograph blending and stitching using multiple photo sources, this should come as no surprise. For the unfamiliar, it’s an interesting look at how dozens of photos can be blended together so effectively that the arm–robotic or otherwise–of the photographer can be taken right out. • Wireless iwconfig rate auto too low

    - by Jamie Kitson
Hi, left to its own devices my wireless connects at too low a speed. I have a 20meg internet connection and my wireless is slowing it down to like 3meg. When I reboot into windows it's fine. When I run iwconfig eth1 rate 24M or even 48M the connection is much faster and runs fine, why won't it automatically go higher? Is this the fault of the driver? I am running Broadcom's driver compiled from source. Would adding iwconfig eth1 rate 24M to rc.local be the right way to force it at boot? • DVD not detected?

    - by Benjamin
As i insert a DVD in my drive (on a laptop) using Kubuntu 12.04, the DVD is not detected. The drive takes the DVD, I can hear it munching on it for a while, and then nothing. Even ejecting the DVD becomes a hassle, I need to do that at boot time otherwise the OS won't allow me to eject. Kubuntu 12.04 used to read and mount the same DVDs just fine a week ago. • Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition

    - by PearlFactory
Have got a new kickn server as new DEV machine It has got two 3ware 9650 Cached Controllers with 8 x 300gig Velociraptor Drives First Problem was the 9.5.1.1 drivers Had to press F8 as soon as the Win 2008 r2 server cd started to load. Once in Adavanced Startup options Disable Driver Signing options Next Issue was I got everything running and accidently selected wrong raid part to do install once I restarted All I would get after waiting the 10 mins for the reboot to start & loading the driver was "setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition"  Finally after about 1 hour I removed all drives apart from the 2 needed for system part on cont 0 deleted system part and recreated this RAID1 mirror. (ALso make sure all USB drives are out on boot..only add them when browsing  the driver to be added )  Restarted loaded driver selected install and Once system is up I will go back and add drives and new parts on both controllers AT least I did not get stuck for a day as is the norm..lol

  • How do I get TV out working on an ATI X800 GTO²?

    - by Liran
Is there any way to make my graphics card (ATI x800) work with tvout? I know there are no proprietary drivers for this card only the opensource ones. It uses this cable for video out: http://warningdang.dynalias.com/magento/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/265x265/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/a/3/a31b_1.jpg Personally I use the yellow RCA for tvout (in windows). I hope there is a way to work it out because it's a really important feature for me and one of the only reasons I boot windows. Thanks ahead!

  • Square Reader Modified to Record Off Old Reel-to-Reel Tape [Video]

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
The Square Reader is a tiny magnetic credit card reader that has taken the mobile payment industry by storm. This clever hack dumps the credit card reading in favor of snagging the audio from old music reels. Evan Long was curious about whether the through-the-headphones interface of the Square Reader could be used to read audio data off old magnetic recordings. With a very small modification (he had to bend a metal tab inside the reader to allow the audio tape to slide through more easily) he was able to listen to and record audio off old reels. Complete noob here. I am trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 from a Live CD. I told the computer to boot from the CD (it does) & it reads the CD & then quits with the Ubuntu dots just freezing. I checked the disk & did the memory test, both OK. I also did the nomodeset in the start-up line. Hit escape when it froze but there were no msgs. Have also tried Ubuntu 12.10 & Dream Studio, same thing. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks! Erik The Pope

  • Ubuntu Server 11.04 installs fine then gets stuck on USBHID

    - by SZetta
ites! I have installed Server 11.04 many many times from this disc and they have always worked perfectly (installed and operated fine). I wanted to reinstall my server again on the same hardware so I threw the disc in and installed but once it finished installing the boot loader and ejected the disc, it decided to go unresponsive. I restarted it and it loaded in through the grub perfectly it seemed, but then it goes and says either that a ipv6 router is unavailable (even though I have it hardwired to my network) or it goes and says usbhid: USB HID core driver and goes unresponsive there. I am very confused as this never happened before from this install. I want to see if this is just me or what before I just go ahead and download the newest version of server. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

  • How To Watch Netflix On Ubuntu with the Netflix Desktop App

    - by Chris Hoffman
We previously covered watching Netflix on Linux and concluded that using a virtual machine was your best bet. There’s now an even better solution – a “Netflix Desktop” app that allows you to watch Netflix on Linux. This app is actually a package containing a patched version of Wine, the Windows build of Firefox, Microsoft Silverlight, and some tweaks to make it all work together. Previously, Silverlight would not run properly in Wine. Note: While this worked pretty well for us, it’s an unofficial solution that relies on Wine. Netflix doesn’t officially support it. • Display problem with fresh install of 12.04

    - by Dan
Just intalled Ubuntu 12.04 from CD and install went with no problems. After rebooting, I get the initial purple screen and then a black screen with mouse pointer and a few stray pixels at the bottom left of screen. Occasionally during the boot process, the purple screen comes back momentarily but then back to the black screen with the mouse pointer. When I finally give up and press the power button, the purple screen returns with the Shut Down box visible as it is shutting down. Any ideas? I have tried adding nomodeset after quiet splash, but no change. Possibly not doing it correctly, since I am somewhat of a newbie to linux. Thanks! Dan

Yes, you do have ISA I/O ports even if you do not have any ISA slots! Do you want to scan the ISA I/O ports? (YES/no): y Probing for `National Semiconductor LM78' at 0x290... No Probing for `National Semiconductor LM79' at 0x290... No Probing for `Winbond W83781D' at 0x290... No Probing for `Winbond W83782D' at 0x290... No Lastly, we can probe the I2C/SMBus adapters for connected hardware monitoring devices. This is the most risky part, and while it works reasonably well on most systems, it has been reported to cause trouble on some systems. Do you want to probe the I2C/SMBus adapters now? (YES/no): y Using driver `i2c-i801' for device 0000:00:1f.3: Intel 3400/5 Series (PCH) Now follows a summary of the probes I have just done. Just press ENTER to continue: Driver `coretemp': * Chip `Intel digital thermal sensor' (confidence: 9) To load everything that is needed, add this to /etc/modules: #----cut here---- # Chip drivers coretemp #----cut here---- If you have some drivers built into your kernel, the list above will contain too many modules. Skip the appropriate ones! Do you want to add these lines automatically to /etc/modules?
