It is generally used to avoid automatic recognition by computer programs. • how do I go about removing all the language packs I don't need

  I just noticed that in /usr/share/help I have the ubuntu help files in 70 different languages. I only speak 2, and I only really compute in one. I also noticed that it is full of broken symbolic links to /usr/share/help-langpack. I want just want to get rid of all the languages I don't need. How can I do this without getting all rm -r happy? I'm preferably looking for a way to do this without installing any new packages, as my main goal is to get rid of excess stuff on my machine. I'd like to find a way to do this preferably with dpkg, or apt.

  The lanl.arxiv.org math and scientific preprint service (formerly known as xxx.lanl.gov) has a strict policy against bots that ignore its robots.txt, Robots Beware. On that page, the have a link labelled with "Click here to initiate automated 'seek-and-destroy' against your site", which is forbidden by their robots.txt but presumably badly behaved robots will follow it, and reap the consequences. The question, what are the actual consequences? I have never had the guts to actually click on that link to see what it does. What can they be doing that is both effective and legal?

Example: a top keyword search is "rental properties in new york". Question is does this keyword need to appear as this exact phrase in the url or should it be broken up into different directories for a better structure e.g.: www.abc.com/en/properties/new-york/rental OR www.abc.com/en/rental-properties-in-new-york Which will help the page rank higher (given all other things on the page are exactly the same)? • Firefox Not responding - Windows 7

  Have just upgraded from Vista to Win7 (32 bit). On vista Firefox worked great. I am using 3.5.6 version. 2GB RAM. In windows 7 however whenever i click on a link, field or tab within the browser or various other places within firefox 'Not Responding' flashes on the title bar. Most of the time i have to click 2 or 3 times to get any link or whatever to work which is very annoying. Any ideas? Can't find anything obvious on google but notice other people get Not Responding messages a lot with various apps. Chrome Plus seems to be fine.

• Google analytics - drop in traffic

  Bit of a general question here. We are in the process of converting a number of our clients from older web sites to new ones. The problem we are getting, and sorry for being so general here, is we are getting a sharp decline in traffic as reported on Google Analytics. It's not a gradual decline, it seems to hit almost as soon as the new site goes live. I've just got a few questions to see if there is something we are doing wrong: a) We are using the same analytics accounts going from old to new site. Is this a bad idea? b) The actual analytics code is integrated into the pages using a server-side include. IS this a bad idea? c) We structure our sites differently to our old site. IE. The old sites would pretty must have all the web pages in the root directory, and hyperlinks would be linked to the page files: EG. <a href="somepage.aspx">Link</a> Our new sites now have a directory structure that pretty much reflects the navigation structure, and hyper links link to the pages directory instead of the actual page: EG. <a href="/new-items/shoes/">New shoes</a> Is this a bad idea. I'm really searching for a needle in a haystack here. Would appriciate any help or advice as to why we are getting such a sharp and sudden drop in traffic. Again, so this is such a general question. • How can I install wireless drivers without internet?

  [Ubuntu 12.04 LTS] I have a HP Pavilion dv6 and I need a Broadcom driver (closed source) to access the internet. However, I need to download that, which I am unable to do because I do not have internet access. My ethernet port has always been broken and I have not been able to access the internet since I installed Ubuntu. I need to find a way for me to install those drivers desperately. I still have Ubuntu on my USB, which for some reason, did have the ability to install that driver (I think it's due to the fact that it already has it somewhere in the files). On my USB Ubuntu, I have that particular driver installed. I was thinking that if one of you knows where drivers are installed, I could locate those files on the USB Ubuntu, then plug in an additional USB to copy them; restart my computer to the harddrive Ubuntu and then install the files from the (additional) USB. I would really appreciate help since to me a computer without internet is useless.

• Firefox: non-Vimperator way to do mouseless browsing?

  Is it possible to do efficient browsing with Firefox using only the keyboard (like in Opera)? By efficient I mean something faster than using TAB - this takes far too long. The arrow keys should be for navigation (in Opera it is Shift + arrow key). It can done with the Vimperator add-on, but isn't there a simpler way? Update 2: the closest to Opera's way is to enable caret navigation (F7 toggles this mode). It doesn't jump between links so it is a little bit slower, but the normal navigation (arrow keys, page up, page down, etc.) works and the focus/caret/cursor follows (in contrast to a text editor for page up/down). And text can be selected and copied like in a text editor. The biggest drawback is that in practice it is necessary to switch in and out of caret mode. And there is no indication of which mode is currently active. Update 1: a work-around (proposed by several but is not really what I am looking for) can be used if 3 settings are changed (to make it practical). After these changes the first few letters of a link text can be typed and that link will selected so pressing Enter will open it. Using the work-around the screen will jump around if it is a long page as it does not restrict itself to the current visible page, but it is usable. First settings change: menu Tools/Options/Advanced/tab General/Accessibility/Search for text when I start typing Turn this option on. Second settings change: set option to only go to links; in address bar enter: about:config followed by Enter. Then: press "I'll be careful, I promise", find the line accessibility.typeaheadfind.linksonly, select it and change the value to True by either hitting Enter or Shift+F10/Toggle (accessibility.typeaheadfind.linksonly is on line 11 when I tried). Third settings change: turn off case-sensitivity. Set accessibility.typeaheadfind.casesensitive to 0 (same procedure as for accessibility.typeaheadfind.linksonly, see above. When Enter is pressed a dialog box will appear with the current value. Type 0 and press Enter). To use: type some part of the link. If there are several possibilities use Ctrl+G (or F3) to jump between them. Use Ctrl+Enter to open in a new tab. Platform: Firefox 3.0.6, Windows XP 64 bit SP2.

  I've installed a stock mysql 5.5 installation, and while I can connect to the mysql service via the mysql command, and the service seems to be running, I cannot connect to it through spring+tomcat or from an external jdbc connector. I'm using the following URL: jdbc:mysql://myserver.com:myport/mydb with proper username/password, but I receive the following message: server.com: Communications link failure The last packet sent successfully to the server was 0 milliseconds ago. the driver has not received any packets from the server. and tomcat throws: com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.CommunicationsException: Communications link failure The last packet sent successfully to the server was 0 milliseconds ago.   While attempting to fix a problem with compiz settings manager, I got an idea from someone to purge compiz - sudo apt-get purge compiz. The compiz core packages are still intact however, the gui compizconfig-settings-manager is deleted and missing from synaptic. • Problem in Kubuntu: Default browser never opens

  I'm using Kubuntu, and I switched the default browser to my favourite one. The thing is, when I did this, both my Twitter clients stopped working. Now each and every Twitter client I download and install fails to open any web browser to finish my account authorization. It's impossible they're all broken, so I reset my default browser to rekonq and it works well as a default browser, but still can't login to twitter from any client. In fact, every button in every program that should open a browser window (like Amarok with the "like on last.fm" button) does nothing. So I think there may be a problem with my system but I can't figure out what is it. My user is not in the admin group (it's a shared user), I have an admin user but I only use it to install programs. Could that be the cause? Also, hitting alt+F2 and writing man:file (enter) opens a rekonq window normally.

• Can't start webcam for google video services

  I've got Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit and have installed the google video chat plugin. However webcam doesn't seem to work (black screen -- no video at all). For cheese it works but shows really bad (black and white kinda) image. Following some link I installed guvcview if I start it then image looks neat. Any suggestions on how can it be fixed? If it helps I've tried the solution: $ sudo mv /opt/google/talkplugin/GoogleTalkPlugin /opt/google/talkplugin/GoogleTalkPlugin.old $ sudo gedit /opt/google/talkplugin/GoogleTalkPlugin and putting following lines in: #!/bin/sh LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib32/libv4l/v4l1compat.so /opt/google/talkplugin/GoogleTalkPlugin.old OR #!/bin/sh LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l1compat.so /opt/google/talkplugin/GoogleTalkPlugin.old Cause I've both files. Finally $sudo chmod +x /opt/google/talkplugin/GoogleTalkPlugin.old I closed and reopened chrome then started gmail tried video call -- black screen :-/ Ok so today finally google+ provided me with trouble shoot link and advised me: The plug-in won't install If you're having trouble installing the plug-in, or are receiving a message asking you to reinstall it, you should check to make sure your configuration is right. To do so simply: Check to make sure the Google Talk Plugin Video Accelerator and Google Talk NPAPI Plugin are enabled. If you're using Chrome you can type about:plugins in your browser to display your plug-ins. Make sure you're not using Internet Explorer 64-bit (this is a browser version that is 64 bit as opposed to 32 bit). Ensure that you don't have any "click to run" extensions enabled. If you're still experiencing this issue after checking your configuration you can follow these steps: Refresh the browser page. Close any running Google Talk plug-in processes. Close all open and running browser processes. Restart your computer. Uninstall and then reinstall the plug-in. Try a different browser such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. I looked in about:plugins for chrome and firefox: I don't have Google Talk NPAPI Plugin, does that matter? and I thought its installed with google talk plugin or no?

• Xubuntu 14.04 will not boot after preseed installation

  I recently set up Xubuntu 14.04 installation using preseed, and ran into a couple of problems during boot time. At first, right after the installation completed during first boot the system complained about /tmp not being mounted and did not proceed any further. I was able to fix that problem by making an entry for /tmp in /etc/fstab like so: tmpfs /tmp tmpfs optional,nodev,nosuid 0 0 This worked for a while (and still does for workstations that are already running), but newly installed machines are broken. They do not complain like before, but take forever to boot (2h) and it seems the root partition is mounted read only and you cannot do anything useful with the system. Any ideas on what to do? You can find the presseed file here Thanks in advance Update: If I get it to boot once via some magic in rescue mode (like simply mounting the root partition read-write, then resume boot) it will work forever. While this is a workaround, it is no option to do this for every installation.

• Networkmanager in systray gone and sound not working after update 13.10

  After upgrading my Xubuntu 13.04 to 13.10 I have no sound. I still have sound if I start VLC with sudo mpg123 test.mp3 So it seemd there is a right problem EDIT after adding myself to the group audio with adduser myself audio I could play sounds again from the desktop with VLC But one problem remaining: The systray, usually looking like this: is not working anymore. No audio-settings and no network-manager in the taskbar in XFCE: there is just one small box with nothing in it. When I install stalonetray, There I see the status of wicd and all the other statuses, so the systray seems to be broken.

  I've just been looking at the stud init script as I thought perhaps I'm meant to create a stud.conf inside /etc/stud However, in looking through the init script it would apppear that it loads stud.conf variables into the current environment. This of course fails for some reason and you get a bunch of errors. Worse still, stud source code doesn't work with environment variables. Can someone tell me how you're actually meant to set up stud with init script as it would appear to be completely broken. Maybe I can just disable the init script and call stud from rc.local?

  About a year ago my wordpress website was hacked & some company decided to go nuts and actually do some "SEO" on the various links it created. Some of the pages would show up on google as "payday cash advance" instead of "portfolio". The issue has been resolved, but now as I've been doing GOOD seo, I've noticed (when checking backlinks) that there are TONS of links still on the internet (mostly broken sites now) that have links to my website with titles like: "get a loan today" and so on. Is there a way to remove these links ? Can I tell google to ignore them ? Help !

• 12.04 wired network doesn't work RTL8111/8168B

  its a fresh 12.04 install 64bits. wifi works fine, wired stays off with cable connected and network-manager shows as if cable is disconnected. Turning off networking lights up my network-cards leds, turning networking on shuts off the leds and no communication is possible. I already tried, turning off the network-manager (sudo service network-manager stop) and setting up my eth0 manually, as soon as I switch off the network-manager my leds light up, but after setting up manually eth0 (sudo ifconfig eth0 10.2.10.114 netmask 255.255.0.0 up) the leds turn off again. I am still dual booting with 10.04 where I have no issues at all, leaving the cable connected all time to my notebook and a switch. • In Enterprise Architect I modified an interface, how to update the realizing classes?

  I've created an interface in a class model. This interface has two methods, A and B and method A takes an argument (a) and method B does not take an argument (yet). Additionally I've created a class that implements this interface, overriding both methods. After a discussing the model method B now should also take a parameter (b), so I modified the interface to reflect this change. However the class realizing this interface is not updated automatically. For one class it's possible to add the method by re-creating the link between the interface, specify the which method should be implemented and deleting this link again. Then the OLD method signature has to be removed as well. This is a lot of work if there is more then one class implementing the modified interface, not to mention error-prone. Does anybody know how to make an entire class model update this type of dependency?

• Migrate 12.04 Wubi install to new partition with corrupted win7 install and small hard drive

  The move from Win7 to Ubuntu 12.04 has been honestly awesome. But I've come into a snag because my Win7 inevitably broke. I can still boot into Ubuntu even though Win7 is broken (won't boot, can't repair). I'd like to Migrate Wubi to a real partition and forget about windows. Presumably under normal conditions I would run the Ubuntu live CD, create a new partition then log back into my Wubi install and migrate using the script to the new partition. But I'm worried if I do that I'll break my current wubi set-up and be unable to migrate. I have a small hard drive, only 75GB and unfortunately my backup drive recently died so can't migrate there first and transfer over either. Does anybody have any suggestions to solve this?
