• How to set the URL of a link to a variable using WATIR

  Using WATIR and Excel, I'd like to take the first row of a table in Excel, visit the URL, then set the 12th link on the page as a variable in the cell next to the cell with the URL, then go to the next line and repeat. I'm stuck on getting the URL of the 12th link on the page to set as a variable that I can feed into the next cell in Excel. • How to run a COM .dll on a remote server?

  I have a legacy 3rd party COM .dll that is used to provide an Excel-callable interface to a proprietary database product. The .dll runs on the same physical machine as Excel. I have a need to execute the .dll (and the database it is calling) on a remote server while still maintaining simple Excel callability from the client. I'm totally confused by all the different MS technologies that seem to hint there is an easy way to do this. Can someone please point me in the right direction (easier is better)?

• Is vbscripting that difficult?

  I need to write some vbscripts in my new project. I was told by other people that vbscripting is easy, but seems to me, it is not. For example, in the following example (provided by microsoft), these functions: CreateObject, CreateShortcut, as well as these property names: TargetPath, WindowStyle, Hotkey, etc, are used, but I just cannot find the corresponding API documentation about how to use them. In other words, how do you know you need to call these functions in your vbscripts? Visual Studio 2008/2010 do not have templates for vbscript either. • Does anyone use AODL in a real application?

  We are currently using the Excel interop API in .NET to generate simple spreadsheet documents from a template. So we load the template first, insert some rows, fill in some data (dates, text, and numbers), and make Excel visible so that the user can print or save the document we just generated. But I'd like to get rid of the Excel dependency, and switch to the ODF format as well. Googling suggests AODL (C# libs for generating ODF docs) as the most obvious solution. But their last release is 1.3.0.0 BETA, and seems to be 3 years old. So I'm not sure if it's a good idea to depend on a potentially dead project... In that case, I'd need to find another solution. Any ideas? Or maybe someone could assure me that AODL is still alive?

My problem is, i have copied the .class file into other directory with the necessary jar files need to create this excel sheet, for example my .class is inside "pack" package. c:/myprogram/pack/excelprogram.class to d:/myprogram /pack/excelprogram.class /jxl.jar /ojdbc14.jar if i run the program javac pack.excelprogram it display below error Caused by: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: jxl.format.CellFormat i have dependency jar file(jxl.jar) for this excel sheet creation.Error is displaying from that only. i have set class path for this jar file like set classpath="%classpath%";d:/myprogram/jxl.jar;d:/myprogram/ojdbc14.jar;.; even though i'm getting the same error. Please help ASAP.

• Need a Concatenating VBA code to prevent memory issue workaround

  My set up: Have 50,000 rows of data. ( My row count will increase in the future. So might as well say I have a full worksheet of 64000+ rows.) All Data is TEXT, no formulas, etc. Column A is open Columns B thru AC contain the Data that needs to be concatenated The Data in the rows once concatenated to Column A will contain 60,000 digits or 6kb in file size. After additional maniuplation each cell will become a file. I have tried concatenating in Excel and I run into memory issues. The memory issue is when I Select and fill down the concatenating function into the worksheet. It crashes at the 8200 +/-row. My system is 2gb of ram, windows xp professional and Excel 2003. Have 4GB of disk space Hoping to find a VBA code that will conserve memory, and not crash like it does in excel. Thank you

For those who are not aware of NES,  it is XBox of 1980’s.  NES is considered one of the most influential video game systems ever produced. Released in 1983, NES conquered millions of gamers heart and had a long lasting impact of 20 years. In the year of 2003, Nintendo finally stopped production of NES. • IIS Permissions or NTFS Permissions?

  I currently have a Windows Server 2003 setup to serve multiple sites via IIS. One of our directories needs to allow access to only 1 specific AD Security Group. I know there are two ways to accomplish this. One is using IIS to add permissions and the other is to set permissions on the folder/directory itself. A script runs at night and populates the content so users only need read permissions to view it in a browser. My question is which one is preferred?

• [MINI HOW-TO] Change the Default Color Scheme in Office 2010

  Like in Office 2007 the default color scheme for 2010 is blue. If you are not a fan of it, here we show you how to change it to silver or black. In this example we are using Microsoft Word, but it works the same way in Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint as well. Once you change the color scheme in one Office application, it will change it for all of the other apps in the suite. Change Color Scheme To change the color scheme click on the File tab to access Backstage View and click on Options. In Word Options the General section should open by default…use the dropdown menu next to Color Scheme to change it to Silver, Blue, or Black then click OK. Here is what Black looks like…who knows why Microsoft decided to leave the blue around the edges. This is the default Blue color scheme… And finally we take a look at the Silver color scheme in Excel… That is all there is to it! It would be nice if they would incorporate other color schemes to Office 2010, as some of you may not be happy with only three choices. • Visio 2010 forward engineer add-in for office 2010

  I have been scouring the internet for ages trying to see if there was a usable add-on for Visio 2010 that could export SQL Scripts. MS stopping putting that functionality in Visio since 2003 – which is a huge shame. Today I found an open source project from Alberto Ferrari. It’s an add-in for Visio 2010 that allows you to generate SQL Scripts from your DB diagram. It’s still in beta, and the source is available.   Check it out here:http://sqlblog.com/blogs/alberto_ferrari/archive/2010/04/16/visio-forward-engineer-addin-for-office-2010.aspx This saves me from having to do all my diagramming in SQL Server / VS 2010. • Last week I was presented with a Microsoft MVP award in Virtual Machines – time to thank all who hel

  MVP in Virtual Machines Last week, on 1st April, I received an e-mail from Microsoft letting me know that I had been presented with a 2010 Microsoft® MVP Award for outstanding contributions in Virtual Machine technical communities during the past year.   It was an honour to be nominated, and is a great reflection on the vibrancy of the UK user group community which made this possible. Virtualisation for developers, not just IT Pros I consider it a special honour as my expertise in virtualisation is as a software developer utilising virtual machines to aid my software development, rather than an IT Pro who manages data centre and network infrastructure.  I’ve been on a minor mission over the past few years to enthuse developers in a topic usually seen as only for network admins, but which can make their life a whole lot easier once understood properly. Continuous learning is fun In 1676, the scientist Isaac Newton, in a letter to Robert Hooke used the phrase (http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/268025.html) ‘If I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants’ I’m a nuclear physicist by education, so I am more than comfortable that any knowledge I have is based on the work of others.  Although far from a science, software development and IT is equally built upon the work of others. It’s one of the reasons I despise software patents. So in that sense this MVP award is a result of all the great minds that have provided virtualisation solutions for me to talk about.  I hope that I have always acknowledged those whose work I have used when blogging or giving presentations, and that I have executed my responsibility to share any knowledge gained as widely as possible. Thanks to all those who helped – a big thanks to the UK user group community I reckon this journey started in 2003 when I started attending a user group called the London .Net Users Group (http://www.dnug.org.uk) started by a nice chap called Ian Cooper. The great thing about Ian was that he always encouraged non professional speakers to take the stage at the user group, and my first ever presentation was on 30th September 2003; SQL Server CE 2.0 and the.NET Compact Framework. In 2005 Ian Cooper was on the committee for the first DeveloperDeveloperDeveloper! day, the free community conference held at Microsoft’s UK HQ in Thames Valley park in Reading.  He encouraged me to take part and so on 14th May 2005 I presented a talk previously given to the London .Net User Group on Simplifying access to multiple DB providers in .NET.  From that point on I definitely had the bug; presenting at DDD2, DDD3, groking at DDD4 and SQLBits I and after a break, DDD7, DDD Scotland and DDD8.  What definitely made me keen was the encouragement and infectious enthusiasm of some of the other DDD organisers; Craig Murphy, Barry Dorrans, Phil Winstanley and Colin Mackay. During the first few DDD events I met the Dave McMahon and Richard Costall from NxtGenUG who made it easy to start presenting at their user groups.  Along the way I’ve met a load of great user group organisers; Guy Smith-Ferrier of the .Net Developer Network, Jimmy Skowronski of GL.Net and the double act of Ray Booysen and Gavin Osborn behind what was Vista Squad and is now Edge UG. Final thanks to those who suggested virtualisation as a topic ... Final thanks have to go the people who inspired me to create my Virtualisation for Developers talk.  Toby Henderson (@holytshirt) ensured I took notice of Sun’s VirtualBox, Peter Ibbotson for being a fine sounding board at the Kew Railway over quite a few Adnam’s Broadside and to Guy Smith-Ferrier for allowing his user group to be the guinea pigs for the talk before it was seen at DDD7.  Thanks to all of you I now know much more about virtualisation than I would have thought possible and it continues to be great fun.   Recently we got a requirement for converting a classic asp project to asp.net. This one is really a very old project created around 2002/2003. It consists of around 50 asp pages. I found very little documentation for this project, FSD and design documents for only a few modules. Just giving a quick look into this project my head start to hurt. It is really a mess. I checked the records and found none of the developers who worked on this project work for the company anymore. My real pain is that this is an urgent requirement and I have to provide an estimated deadline to my supervisor. I found a similar question classic-asp-to-asp-net, but I need some more insight on how to convert this classic asp project to asp.net in the quickest possible way.
