• Use DLL and have it be as trusted as my own application is

  Hi, I am using a port of GNU GetOpts, to be specific I am using the one at: http://getopt.codeplex.com I have added the DLL as a reference. But when I run my application I receive an exception: System.IO.FileLoadException was unhandled Message="Could not load file or assembly 'Gnu.Getopt, Version=0.9.1.24287, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=d014b4ccdc53511a' or one of its dependencies. Failed to grant permission to execute. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131418)" If it is possible I would like my application to say, "trust this DLL as much as you trust me". Is there a way to do that so I won't have to fiddle with security settings? And if there is not. What is the cleanest way to get the DLL working?

  Hi, I'm new to the validation application block and trying to use it with wcf... I have a wcf service that has data objects with validation rules defined with attributes, using the validation application block . On my client side (WPF), I have a service reference. When I update the service reference the generated classes do not have the validation rules attributes in them. How can I get the rules from the service? Am I missing some step, or is it not possible?

• SVG drawing application with vector export

  I want to create a drawing application where I can place text and images on a canvas. Those elements also need to be interactively manipulated. Eventually the resulting canvas has to be exported to a vector based PDF. An excellent contender for this functionality would be SVG. However, this application also needs to be crossbrowser compatible. I've been browsing around for some time now and have seen a couple of solutions available. I found among others RaphaelJS and Google's SVGWeb for working with SVG. Now for converting those SVG files to a PDF I'm not sure if for instance Batik will offer me what I am looking for. Also, how would bitmap images be handled when converting the SVG to PDF?

• Self updating application install with WIX?

  I am writing an application that needs to be installed on a large number of desktops and also needs to update itself. We are looking at WIX for creating the installation. I have used ClickOnce and it is not a good solution for this install. WIX seems to fit, but there is no good process for auto update that I have found. I have looked at ClickThrough, but it doesn't seem ready for prime time yet. Does anyone have another good solution to use with WIX (or maybe another install program) to auto update an application install?

  Hello, I'd like to develop a desktop application (on Windows, and preferably on .NET) that accepts bluetooth connections from mobile devices, that would then send commands to this application. I've never worked with bluetooth before. I've looked for open-source examples of such applications, but I had no luck. I've actually found on Microsoft a managed (.NET) wrapper for the bluetooth stack on Windows CE, but wasn't able to use it on my Windows 7. Do you know of any good texts discussing this topic? Any other source of information on the subject? Where should I start? Thanks.

  Hi, I need to deploy a Windows Forms application using ClickOnce deployment. (VS2008, .NET 3.5) And I need to provide a configuration file for this app that any user can modify. For this reason, I am using Application Settings instead of standard appSetttings in app.config so I can separate the the user config from app config. see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms228995(VS.80).aspx Creating a Settings.settings file using VS generated a class with hard-coded default values like this: [global::System.Configuration.DefaultSettingValueAttribute("blahblah")] public string MyProperty ... WTF? I want to read the default values from the app.config! So I created my own class deriving from ApplicationSettingsBase but I cannot get this to read values from the app.config. Any ideas?

• Disable a style in VCL application

  I am adding the a VCL style into my application but am also giving the users an option to turn this off but I cannot figure out how to do this globally at runtime. Setting "TStyleManager.AutoDiscoverStyleResources := false" almost works but it pops up with an error message saying "Style {style set} not found" but after dismissing the message does exactly what I want. This code I would expect to work but does not... if (not ParamObj.UseDarkStyle) then begin //TStyleManager.AutoDiscoverStyleResources := false; TStyleManager.SetStyle(TStyleManager.SystemStyle); end; I also tried (originally) TStyleManager.TrySetStyle('Windows'); but this also does not work. • Markers in Google Maps Application

  I am supposed to display a certain location using Google Maps application. I have lat/long values and tried Intent.ACTION_VIEW with "geo:lat,long?z=15" uri. The Google Maps application loads centered on the supplied lat-long value but obviously does not display any marker(overlays) pin-pointing the location. Is it possible to request the Google Maps App to display markers? Also, the zoom level paramater doesnt seem to work. Maps load at the default zoom level of 10. I can easily achieve this using MapActivity but Google Map App is what is desired. Thanks

I'm writing a web application that is supposed to connect to a SQL Server database; the connection is formed from the following database string: <add key="DatabaseConnectionString" value="server=DEVPC1\SQLEXPRESS;uid=USERID;pwd=PASSWORD;database=DATABASE"/> However, whenever I try and run the web application, I get a connection error, specifically: An error occurred attempting this login: Login failed for user 'USERID'.   I've been looking for a simple key/license system for our users. Its partly to stop piracy (avoid users from sharing the application around) and the other half to track the number of 'licensed users' we have. I have already read a few good suggestions on SO but I'm curious as to how people have implemented the 30 day evaluation criteria. Do you generate a key that stores the date somewhere and do a comparison each time or is it a little more complicated - deleting the file/removing the registry shouldn't deactivate. Are there any example implementations out there that can give me a head start? The irony is that our PM doesn't want to license a third-party system to do it for us. This is for a Windows Forms application.

  I am running a JSP/Servlet Web application and out of nowhere we experienced some random problems that don't make any sense. I checked the catalina.out file to check the log files, and I noticed it contained some of the following messages SEVERE: Error starting static Resources java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Invalid or unreadable WAR file : error in opening zip file INFO: validateJarFile(/home/weremo/appservers/ apache-tomcat-6.0.26/webapps /WMA/WEB-INF/lib/ servlet-api.jar) - jar not loaded. See Servlet Spec 2.3, section 9.7.2. Offending class: javax/servlet/Servlet.class I am aware of what this message means, but am in the dark as to what could have caused it, or what effects it could have on the application.

  I have a fairly large application that uses WPF for its user interface. I recently found an unusual defect regarding 3D screensavers. The 3D screensavers 3D FlowerBox,3D Flying Objects,3D Pipes,3D Text causes 1 of my WPF windows to disappear when the screensaver activates. Other screensavers are fine. My application only encounters this problem on Windows XP. I have some experience with DirectX. When a 3D screensavers activates, the d3d device context will be switched to exclusive mode. I reckon that WPF has trouble restoring the device context when the device switches back to cooperative mode (hence why its only affecting windows XP) Has anyone seen such a scenario occur before ? Is there a remedy for the problem ? Windows XP SP3, DirectX 9.0c, .NET 3.5

  Disclaimer: this is not a question about how to install asp.net or an application using it! Hi! I am pretty sure many of you have once installed some kind of forum, blog or CMS (mostly PHP powered applications). All of these contain a folder mostly named "install" where (after you copied the files to the webserver) point your browser to to complete the installation by entering for example database information (servername, username, password, ...). After that, most applications suggest that you delete this folder or at least change the permissions so nobody from the outside can access it anymore. Now to my question: how would you go about that in the asp.net world? I don't really like the "install folder"-approach and I thought there might be a different mechanism for .net/IIS. The person installing my application should be able to enter his database information as painless as possible, which should ultimatively be stored in the web.config file. If it makes a difference, I am using asp.net MVC. Thanks for your help!

Test PC uses XAMPP Apache. "Root" directory on the test machine is: C:\xampp\htdocs\ My questions: 1. Where is logical path "/home/mydir/" defined? 2.   We have subclassed the Silverlight Application class to add some additional functionality and then use this in multiple projects. The problem is that the Resources defined in App.xaml do not seem to get loaded. Has anyone else seen this and/or have some insight?   I am trying to develop an application that uses a number of images that are stored in a seperate remote file location. The file-paths to the UI elements are stored within the Application Settings. Although I understand how to access and use the file-path from Settings in C# (Properties.Settings.Default.pathToGridImages + "OK.png"), I am at a loss to figure out how to utilize the Settings paths in WPF, and can only seem to access the file if I include the file-path, such as: <Grid.Background> <ImageBrush ImageSource="C:\Skins\bottomfill.png" TileMode="Tile" /> </Grid.Background> I would have thought that concatenating "Properties.Settings.Default.pathToGridImages" with "bottomfill.png" in WPF could be done much like it can be done in C#. Can anyone please point me in the right direction?

  I just went through this tutorial: http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/security/tour2/index.html And was curios about the basic concept of JAAS... If every applcation needs to be run with the '-Djava.security.manager -Djava.security.policy=...' flags, what is enforcing security? Is it up to the end user to know when any Java application is being run, and modify the executable/script/whatever to include those flags? Or, how does a developer enforce that an application is run with the security manager enabled? The whole concept doesnt seem very functional to me - as it is by default not enabled... Am I missing something?

  I have a WPF application with a WCF service layer and a SQL database. I now want to restrict elements of the application so that certain functions are only available to those users with a particular role. For example, you will only be able to navigate to the settings screen if you are an administrator. I would like a user to be a member of 1 or more authorisation groups and each authorisation group to have 1 or more roles associated. A long time ago I used AzMan (Authorisation Manager) to do a similar thing. Does anyone think that there are better approaches? Is AzMan "old news"? Alternatives? Thanks.
