  • How to write your unit tests to switch between NUnit and MSTest

    On my current project I found it useful to use both NUnit and MsTest for unit testing. When using ReSharper for running unit tests, it just simply works better with NUnit, and on large scale projects NUnit tends to run faster. We would have just simply used NUnit for everything, but MSTest gave us a few bonuses out of the box that were hard to pass up. Namely code coverage (without having to shell out thousands of extra dollars for the privilege) and integrated tests into the build process. I’m one of those guys who wants the build to fail if the unit tests don’t pass. If they don’t pass, there’s no point in sending that build on to QA. So making the build work with MsTest is easiest if you just create a unit test project in your solution. This adds the right references and project type Guids in the project file so that everything just automagically just works. Then (using NuGet of course) you add in NUnit. At the top of your test file, remove the using statements that refer to MsTest and replace it with the following: #if NUNIT using NUnit.Framework; #else using TestFixture = Microsoft.VisualStudio.TestTools.UnitTesting.TestClassAttribute; using Test = Microsoft.VisualStudio.TestTools.UnitTesting.TestMethodAttribute; using TestFixtureSetUp = Microsoft.VisualStudio.TestTools.UnitTesting.TestInitializeAttribute; using SetUp = Microsoft.VisualStudio.TestTools.UnitTesting.TestInitializeAttribute; using Microsoft.VisualStudio.TestTools.UnitTesting; #endif Basically I’m taking the NUnit naming conventions, and redirecting them to MsTest. You can go the other way, of course. I only chose this direction because I had already written the tests as NUnit tests. NUnit and MsTest provide largely the same functionality with slightly differing class names. There’s few actual differences between then, and I have not run into them on this project so far. To run the tests as NUnit tests, simply open up the project properties tab and add the compiler directive NUNIT. Remove it, and you’re back in MsTest land.

    Our two server SharePoint 2007 SP2 farm has an issue. Event ID 6482 appears in the Application log of the Web front end many times a day. Often many time a minute.     I would like to register a .cn domain. I found the below pages which list the officially accredited registrars: -based in China: http://www.cnnic.net.cn/html/Dir/2007/06/05/4635.htm -based outside China: http://www.cnnic.net.cn/html/Dir/2007/06/25/4671.htm Needless to say that the registrars based in China have their website in Chinese which effectively prevents me from using them. There are 11 oversea registrars and I'm wondering which one I should be using. If you look at the big names, they all have their .cn registered (facebook.cn, microsoft.cn...), and whois only shows a Sponsering registrar which doesn't seem to be offering domains registration services directly to consumers: $ whois facebook.cn Domain Name: facebook.cn ROID: 20050304s10001s04039518-cn Domain Status: ok Registrant ID: tuv3ldreit6px8c7 Registrant Organization: Facebook Inc.     Visual studio 2010 is an amzing release from Microsoft. I have tried the beta 1,2 of Visual Studio 2010 and finally the full version is released. I am also interested in the latest edition of Windows which nothing but our Windows 7. Next to Vista I like this version very much. Out of curiosity I have installed the prebuild version of Windows 7. I tried installing the express edition here and it failed making me disappointed. I tried two or three times and finally I decided to download the trial version of Windows 7. After that I can install the Visual Studio 2010 express edition easily.     One of the frameworks that I chose to leverage in the development of my Silverlight 4 Task-It application is MEF, the Managed Extensibility Framework. Actually, that decision came while I was at a Silverlight Deep Dive session on the Microsoft campus in Redmond, WA, and came at the recommendation of John Papa (Microsoft Silverlight Evangelist) and Glenn Block (the MEF Maniac). If you are not familiar with MEF, its primary function is to provide a framework for extensibility in Silverlight applications, however, what I found is that MEF's capabilities go beyond just this.     SQL Server 2012 is available for download! http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/en/us/default.aspx The Evaluation version is available here: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=29066 and along with the SQL Server 2012 RTM there’s also the Feature Pack available: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=29065 The Feature Pack is rich of useful and interesting stuff, something needed by some feature, like the Semantic Language Statistics Database some other a very good (I would say needed) download if you use certain technologies, like MDS or Data Mining. Btw, for Data Mining also the updated Excel Addin has been released and it’s available in the Feature Pack. As if this would not be enough, also the SQL Server Data Tools IDE has been released in RTM: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/data/hh297027 Remember that SQL Server Data Tool is completely free and can be used with SQL Server 2005 and after.   • Windows: "net use" equivalent that shows the username used to mount a share?

    Sometimes you need to use different credentials to map different shares, for instance net use z: \\myserver\myshare /user:mydomain\myusername mypassword You can use net use to show you the shares that are mapped, but it does not show the mydomain\myusername. What can I use to show that information? I'm looking for output like this from the imaginary command NetUseX: H:\>NetUseX New connections will be remembered.
