• Outlook Addin in C# - How to add button/group in New Mail (next to signatures)

  I'm having some trouble understanding Outlook terms (CommandBarPopup, CommandBarButton etc) like what is what in Outlook so please be patient. I would like to create couple of things: I would like to create new group (or just button but i read it's not possible to add a button to an existing group in ribbon) on new mail next to Signature/Add attachment in Message Ribbon. It would have to work the same way Signature works so when you press it it display couple of options. How can i create it? I would like to override a button "NEW" (where you can choose that you want to send new mail, make appointment or do other things) so that when you are in Main Window when you press the down arrow next to new button you could choose one of options i will add? Is this possible? How do I do it? • Rolemanager not working when ASPDotNetStorefront served in a virtual folder with FormsAuthentication

  Does anyone know if there is a valid roleManager I can apply to ASPDotNetStorefront to get the site working? We have a website that has an ASP.Net storefront served in a virtual folder off the root. ourwebsite.com ourwebsite.com/shop Everything has been workign fine until we put the groundwork in place for forms authentication in the website recently. This caused an error on the production server when you tried to get into the shop... Unable to cast object of type 'System.Web.Security.RolePrincipal' to type 'AspDotNetStorefrontCore.AspDotNetStorefrontPrincipal'. Looking at the shop's web.config I noticed there was no RoleManager node, so I tried to fix the problem by removing it in the shop's web.config <roleManager enabled="false"> </roleManager> This prevented the error occurring, but also prevented the shopping basket from working. Instead I removed the rolemanager tag from the root website... <!-- Conflicting with AspDotNetStorefront <roleManager enabled="true" defaultProvider="CustomizedRoleProvider"> <providers> <add name="CustomizedRoleProvider" type="System.Web.Security.SqlRoleProvider" connectionStringName="constr" /> </providers> </roleManager> --> This worked, but obviously prevents role authentication working on the root website, which is okay for the next 2 or 3 releases. • Accessing Request object from custom JSP tags

  I'm trying to make a set of custom tags that encapsulate form elements (markup and validation). There's a method given to retrieve the "Out" object easily: JspWriter out = getJspContext().getOut(); However I can't figure out how to get the request object. I want to be able to directly access the submitted form values from within the Tag class so that I can validate each field. The documentation is quite sparse, so I thought maybe I could use the JspContext object to somehow get the request attributes. But I don't understand the different scopes. System.out.println(getJspContext().findAttribute("field1")); always prints "null". Enumeration e = getJspContext().getAttributeNamesInScope(1); Looping through and printing out the enumeration just gives me a list of classes that don't exist: javax.servlet.jsp.jspOut javax.servlet.jsp.jspPage javax.servlet.jsp.jspSession javax.servlet.jsp.jspApplication javax.servlet.jsp.jspPageContext javax.servlet.jsp.jspConfig javax.servlet.jsp.jspResponse javax.servlet.jsp.jspRequest So is this even possible? If not, could anyone point me to a tag library that deals with form display and validation? I searched the internet for a couple hours and it seemed every single one was discontinued and I couldn't download them. Either that or suggest a better alternative for handling forms.

• Naming of ASP.NET controls inside User Controls with ASP.NET MVC

  I am wondering if there is a way to make ASP.NET controls play nicely with my ASP.NET MVC app. Here is what I am doing. I have an order page which displays info about a single Order object. The page will normally have a bunch of rows of data, each row representing an OrderItem object. Each row is an ASP.NET User Control. On the user control there is a form element with two text boxes (Quantity and Price), and an update button. When I click the update button, I expect the form to post the data for that individual OrderItem row to a controller method and update the OrderItem record in the database. Here is my problem: When the post happens, the framework complains because the fields on the form don't match the parameters on the controller method. Each form field is something like "OrderItem_1$Quantity" or "OrderItem_2$Price" instead of just "Quantity" or "Price" which would match my method parameters. I have been told that I can overcome this by making sure that the IDs of all my controls are unique for the page, but allow the NAMEs to be repeated between different forms, so that if a form for an individual row is posted, the name can be something that will match what is on my controller method. The only problem is that I am using ASP.NET controls for my text boxes (which I REALLY want to continue doing) and I can't find any way to override the name field. There is no Name propery on an ASP.NET control, and even when I try to set it using the Attributes accessor property by saying "control.Attributes["Name"] = "Price";" it just adds another name= attribute to the HTML tag which doesn't work. Does any one know how I can make this work? I really don't like all of the HtmlHelper functions like TextBox and DropDown because I hate having my .aspx be so PHP or ASP like with the <%% tags and everything. Thanks!

I have successfully added the Web Reference in Visual Studios, however I cannot figure out exactly how to invoke the call to the web service.   Our company works with another company called iMatrix and they have an API for creating our own forms. They have confirmed that our request is hitting their servers but a response is supposed to come back in 1 of a few ways determined by a parameter. • .NET Reference "Copy Local" True / False Being Set Based on Contents of GAC

  We had a very interesting problem with a Win Forms project. It's been resolved. We know what happened, but we want to understand why it happened. This may help other people out in the future who have a similar problem. The WinForms project failed on 2 of our client's PCs. The error was an obscure kernel.dll error. The project ran fine on 3 other PCs. We found that a .DLL (log4net.dll - a very popular open-source logging library) was missing from our release folder. It was previously in our release folder. Why was it missing in this latest release? It was missing because I must have installed a program on my Dev box that used log4net.dll and it was added to the Global Assembly Cache. When I checked the solution's references for log4net.dll, they were changed to "copy local=FALSE". They must have changed automatically because log4net.dll was present in my GAC. Here's where my question starts: Why did my reference for log4net.dll get changed from COPY LOCAL = TRUE to COPY LOCAL = FALSE? I suspect it's because it was added to my GAC by another program. How can we prevent this from happening again? As it stands now, if I install a piece of software that uses a common library and it adds it to my GAC, then my SLNs that reference that DLL will change from Copy Local TRUE to FALSE.

• Why is software quality so problematic?

  Even when viewing the subject in the most objective way possible, it is clear that software, as a product, generally suffers from low quality. Take for example a house built from scratch. Usually, the house will function as it is supposed to. It will stand for many years to come, the roof will support heavy weather conditions, the doors and the windows will do their job, the foundations will not collapse even when the house is fully populated. Sure, minor problemsdo occur, like a leaking faucet or a bad paint job, but these are not critical. Software, on the other hand is much more susceptible to suffer from bad quality: unexpected crashes, erroneous behavior, miscellaneous bugs, etc. Sure, there are many software projects and products which show high quality and are very reliable. But lots of software products do not fall in this category. Take into consideration paradigms like TDD which its popularity is on the rise in the past few years. Why is this? Why do people have to fear that their software will not work or crash? (Do you walk into a house fearing its foundations will collapse?) Why is software - subjectively - so full of bugs? Possible reasons: Modern software engineering exists for only a few decades, a small time period compared to other forms of engineering/production. Software is very complicated with layers upon layers of complexity, integrating them all is not trivial. Software development is relatively easy to start with, anyone can write a simple program on his PC, which leads to amateur software leaking into the market. Tight budgets and timeframes do not allow complete and high quality development and extensive testing. How do you explain this issue, and do you see software quality advancing in the near future?

• C# Thread Pool Cross-Thread Communication

  The Scenario I have a windows forms application containing a MAINFORM with a listbox on it. The MAINFORM also has a THREAD POOL that creates new threads and fires them off to do lots of different bits of processing. Whilst each of these different worker threads is doing its job, I want to report this progress back to my MAINFORM, however, I can't because it requires Cross-Thread communication. Progress So far all of the tutorials etc. that I have seen relating to this topic involve custom(ish) threading implementations, whereas I literally have a fairly basic(ish) standard THREAD POOL implementation. Since I don't want to really modify any of my code (since the application runs like a beast with no quarms) - I'm after some advice as to how I can go about doing this cross-thread communication. ALTERNATIVELY - How to implement a different "LOGTOSCREEN" method altogether (obviously still bearing in mind the cross-thread communication thing). WARNING: I use this website at work, where we are locked down to IE6 only, and the javascript thus fails, meaning I cannot click accept on any answers during work, and thus my acceptance rate is low. I can't do anything about it I'm afraid, sorry. EDIT: I DO NOT HAVE INSTALL RIGHTS ON MY COMPUTER AT WORK. I do have firefox but the proxy at work fails when using this site on firefox. What I am looking is opinions on using any of the above so I can form my own and help others do the same, based on what I read here. I do not care which one is better. What I care for is why someone likes one of the above and what do these controls offer as a distinct advantage. I am interested in developer's opinion and I would like to find out which things are difficult doing with any of the above controls and which things are easy to achieve. AJAX compatibility (build in to the controls but also manual), ASP.NET compatibility, input capabilities, data binding options, performance, how much code does one need to write in order to create a chart, are some of the things that I would want to read about. I have already done my research on StackOverflow for relevant questions but there is nothing on the level of detail that I would want to read in order to make a responsible decision.

• Aspnet_merge error has no detail

  I have been attempting to add a Deployment Project to my web app. When I build it, I get a message "An error occurred when merging assemblies: Exception from HRESULT: 0x806D0004". There is no other detail, like ILMerge error, or Duplicate Name. I have "verbosity" set to "Diagnostic", and this is the output: Command: C:\Program Files\MSBuild\Microsoft\WebDeployment\v8.0\aspnet_merge.exe "\...XXX...\My Documents\Visual Studio 2005\Projects\XXX_deploy\Debug" -o XXX_deploy -debug -copyattrs The "AspNetMerge" task is using "aspnet_merge.exe" from "C:\Program Files\MSBuild\Microsoft\WebDeployment\v8.0\aspnet_merge.exe". I added a single new form named Default. I have even tried renaming that form to DefaultX, just in case there was another Default out there. I still get the error. What else can I look for? • Cannot see named Silverlight control in code

  In my first few hours with Silverlight 3, as an avid WPF user, I am greatly disappointed at the many things it doesn't support. This seems like an odd issue to me and it's so generic that I cannot find anything online about it. I have the following XAML: <controls:TabControl x:Name="workspacesTabControl" Grid.Row="1" Background="AntiqueWhite" ItemsSource="{Binding Workspaces, ElementName=_root}"/> However, I cannot see the workspacesTabControl in code-behind. I thought maybe IntelliSense is just being mean and tried to go ahead and compile it anyway, but got an error: Error 1 The name 'workspacesTabControl' does not exist in the current context How do I access controls in code-behind? EDIT: I realized I've pasted the wrong error - I have two controls inside the UserControl called workspacesTabControl and menuStrip. I cannot get to either one of them by their name in the code-behind. Just in case, here is the XAML for the menuStrip: <controls:TreeView Grid.ColumnSpan="2" Height="100" x:Name="menuStrip" ItemContainerStyle="{StaticResource MenuStripStyle}" ItemsSource="{Binding Menu, ElementName=_root}"/> EDIT AGAIN: I'm not sure if this is helpful, but I've taken a look at the InitializeComponent() code and here's what I saw: [System.Diagnostics.DebuggerNonUserCodeAttribute()] public void InitializeComponent() { if (_contentLoaded) { return; } _contentLoaded = true; System.Windows.Application.LoadComponent(this, new System.Uri("/SapphireApplication;component/SapphireMain.xaml", System.UriKind.Relative)); } It seems that it simply loads the XAML when it runs (not before or during compilation) so the menuStrip and workspacesTabControl names don't actually get registered anywhere (as they usually are in WPF/win Forms). Could that attribute be a problem? And where do I get rid of this requirement for all the future UserControls I make?

• Threading 101: What is a Dispatcher?

  Once upon a time, I remembered this stuff by heart. Over time, my understanding has diluted and I mean to refresh it. As I recall, any so called single threaded application has two threads: a) the primary thread that has a pointer to the main or DllMain entry points; and b) For applications that have some UI, a UI thread, a.k.a the secondary thread, on which the WndProc runs, i.e. the thread that executes the WndProc that recieves messages that Windows posts to it. In short, the thread that executes the Windows message loop. For UI apps, the primary thread is in a blocking state waiting for messages from Windows. When it recieves them, it queues them up and dispatches them to the message loop (WndProc) and the UI thread gets kick started. As per my understanding, the primary thread, which is in a blocking state, is this: C++ while(getmessage(/* args &msg, etc. */)) { translatemessage(&msg, 0, 0); dispatchmessage(&msg, 0, 0); } C# or VB.NET WinForms apps: Application.Run( new System.Windows.Forms() ); Is this what they call the Dispatcher? My questions are: a) Is my above understanding correct? b) What in the name of hell is the Dispatcher? c) Point me to a resource where I can get a better understanding of threads from a Windows/Win32 perspective and then tie it up with high level languages like C#. Petzold is sparing in his discussion on the subject in his epic work. Although I believe I have it somewhat right, a confirmation will be relieving.

• Cannot add SourceSafe Database as Visual Studio 2010 source control.

  My issue is that I cannot add SourceSafe Database for source control within Visual Studio 2010. Our team was initially using VSS for source control in Visual Studio 2010. During an evaluation of TFS, I switched my source control to TFS. It will be a few weeks before a decision is made on TFS, so I needed to switch my source control back to VSS. However I'm now unable to add a SourceSafe Database in Visual Studio. Steps to Reproduce in Visual Studio 2010: 1) Access the 'Open SourceSafe Database' form via Tools-Options-Source Control-Plug-in Settings--Advanced or via File-Source Control 2) The list of available database is blank so I choose 'Browse'. 3) I browse to the srcsafe.ini file for my VSS database and select it. 4) I'm promted to confirm the Database Name - Click OK. 5) The database does not appear in the 'Open SourceSafe' Database form. The list of available databases is still blank. Note that I can add the database fine outside of Visual Studio using VSS directly. However the databases I add via VSS do not appear in the Visual Studio forms. I'm suspicious that this is related to "down-grading" from TFS to VSS which may not have been heavily tested at MS. Any assistance is appreciated.

• Detect Autocomplete

  Hello, I have some forms that have inlined labels. I have some javascript (jQuery) that detects when focus has changed or when a user is entering text that changes the class so that the inlined label disappears and isn't blocking the user's view of their entered text. The problem I'm having occurs when the browser autocompletes the form. None of the conditions below are triggered so I can't clear out the inlined label. How can I detect the fact that text has been entered via autocomplete so that I can clear the labels?   I am getting the above error in IIS 6.0 now when I browse my C# / SQL web application. This was built in VS 2008 and SS 2008 on a 32-bit XP OS. The application was working before I added Login controls to it. However, this is my first time configuring Login/password controls so I am probably missing something really basic. The Network Service account has SELECT, EXECUTE, INSERT, UPDATE access to this database. I added users and roles via ASP.NET Configuration wizard, and I believe I set this up correctly since I followed the Microsoft tutorial at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms998347.aspx. One other problem I see from VS is after adding content to my Page_Load on my initial login Password.aspx.cs file, I'm getting an invalid cast problem below. I googled this problem also but the solutions I saw confused me even more.
