• Windows 8 blue screen error watchdog violation

  My system is windows 8 pro rtm x64. Recently my system started hanging frequently. Nothing but the restart button works. But now just after hanging it showed me a BSOD error saying watchdog violation. I used bluscreen viewer to see the error in the memory dump and it showed me something about hal.dll, ntoskrnl.exe. This is what windows showed me.   Hi guys, let me explain you the current scenario. We have a asp.net application on framework 2 running on intranet(Windows 2003 Server and Sql Server 2000). Now we have a xp machine where we installed and configured IIS with a virtual directory pointing on the local Xp machine and this machine is connected to our intranet. We have copied the same application files of the server to this XP machine. But the thing is the connection string/database of the application is pointing towards the intranet server. The problem is when we try to run the application on the XP machine we get this error : An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) Is this query related or concerned with this site or stackoverflow ?

• Making an SSD drive the primary boot/system drive

  [Not much of a hardware guy, so please excuse my ignorance :)] I just ordered an HP Pavilion Elite HPE-450t (desktop), which came with Win7 installed on the hard drive, using two partitions (C: and D:). Separately, I bought a 128GB SSD that I intend to use as my system drive. I got it in there and connected it, and right now, it's the J: drive (which was the first letter available in disk manager). My goal is for the SSD to get a clean OS install be the C: drive, and to clean out the other hard drive and make it D: (for misc data storage) Question #1: the motherboard has two SATA plugs. Does it matter which one I use for which drive? Question #2: what's the right way to install Win7 on the SSD in a way that it ends up being the C: drive? Do I need to switch some things around in the current Win7 that came with it, are can I do all that while installing Win7 on the SSD?

• 500 internal server error php long running process

  I am trying to run a long php process and it ends with the 500 internal server error. It executes fine for about 8 mins. I have rebooted the machine after changing the php settings. PHP Config: max_execution_time: 3600 After around 10 mins ps ax|grep php: 19007 ? S 0:08 /usr/bin/php /home/gypsy/public_html/index.php I have set the ignore_user_abort true. The process gets stuck at 00:08 min and isn't executed further. Apache error log shows the error: Script timed out before returning headers: index.php It seems somehow the max_execution_time isn't working. Any suggestion would be a great help.

  Alright, let's make this simple. I'm really contemplating performing a system refresh. What I've been looking for all over is if the process keeps some certain folders. Namely my Documents, Pictures, Videos, Downloads, and Desktop folders. There's some real valuable stuff in there, and I really want to know if refreshing my PC will keep these intact. Also, there is an application located at C:\Pesterchum that I would like to keep intact. Should I back it up, then copy it back into its original location after the refresh? Or will it be left untouched?

• Error creating an .img file from an .ISO (MD5 verified)

  I was following the instructions on this website to create a bootable USB flash drive on a Mac: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/create-a-usb-stick-on-mac-osx The instruction: hdiutil convert -format UDRW -o ~/path/to/target.img ~/path/to/ubuntu.iso does not create a valid file that the disk utility can copy to the USB drive, making installation on a USB drive useless. I've been repeating these instructions for days with no luck. The only thing that does not work is the .ISO to .IMG conversion. Is there a way to download Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64-but Desktop in a .IMG file already? Unfortunately, my install notebook does not have an optical drive so USB is the only way. Thanks for your help!

• Why is my system using port 4?

  I have Windows 7 and have noticed that my system is using port 4 to connect to a lot of different IP addresses. When it connects to them it is not for very long before it moves to another IP address. One night I sat and wrote down as many as I could and started checking whois to see where they were and they were from all over the world. I don't understand this. When I did a search on the net with this question. The only info I could come up with was, that port 4 is used by the US Army and a list of port assignments listed it as "unassigned". If anyone has any clues to what is going on... I would greatly appreciate any info I could get.

• A Service specific error occured:1 on trying to start apache 2.0 server.(Windows 7)

  I installed apache on my computer(localhost) and it worked fine. Then I went to download some other stuff and later noticed that the apache server stopped. So I went to command prompt(as administrator) and typed net start apache2. It says The Apache2 Service is starting. But before it finishes, I get the error A Service Specific Error Occurred: 1. It says that you can type in something for more info, but that doesn't help at all. Things I have tried: 1: Quit Google Drive Sync 2: Quit any and all programs using port 80(port my server is on) 3. I even tried changing the port of the server and got same error message, so I don't think it has anything to do with something else being in the port. None of those things have worked. I am confused at why it worked earlier, but now it won't work. Any help is greatly appreciated.

• Why does DirectX use a left-handed coordinate system?

  I considered posting on Stack Overflow, but the question strikes me as being far too subjective since I can't think of a reasonable technical explanation for Microsoft's choice in this matter. But this question has bugged me for so long and the issue keeps coming up in one of my projects, and I have never actually seen an attempt at explaining this: OpenGL uses a right-handed coordinate system, where the +Z part of the world coordinate system extends toward the viewer. DirectX uses a left-handed system where the +Z part of the world coordinate extends into the screen, away from the viewer. I never used the Glide API, so I don't know how it worked, but from what I can gather, it uses a left-handed system as well. Is there a technical reason for this? And if not, is there some conceptual advantage to a particular handedness of a coordinate system? Why would one choose one over the other?

• Black screen with blinking cursor after dual boot install 14.04

  I have just installed Ubuntu 14.04 on my toshiba laptop along side Windows 7. When the menu comes up to choose which OS to boot into, I can easily boot into Windows 7. I cannot successfully boot into Ubuntu. All I get is a blinking cursor on a black/purple screen. I attempted the nomodeset trick, which was a bit more successful. I got a screen with a lot of code, but then it stopped with a blinking cursor at the bottom and wouldn't load anymore. As a last resort, would returning my laptop to factory settings get rid of linux and the partitions made to the drive? I already did this to my laptop when it was just windows, which is why I thought I might as well try to add Ubuntu. But it's a lengthy process, and if it won't get rid of the partitions and ubuntu, I won't bother. I appreciate any help ~many thanks

• How can I install Ubuntu alongside Fedora?

  I am currently running Fedora and would like to duel boot with Ubuntu. I do not want to replace Fedora, I would like to keep it as my main OS. However, when using the Ubuntu installer I only get the option to either: "Replace Fedora release 20 (Heisenbug) with Ubuntu" or "Something else" Is there I way I can install ubuntu alongside Fedora without deleting it? If so, as I would like fedora to be my main OS, is there also a way to make it the top grub option? I have tried partitioning with gparted however I can't split the fedora partition, it says it is all used however I have only used about 100/500GB. I am trying to install ubuntu 13.10 off a live USB stick, I will upgrade to 14.04 when I install it but don't want to make a new live USB.

  Afternoon. We have three identical terminal servers running Windows Server 2003 SP2, on these servers there are about 250 concurrent users logged on. We're running Roaming Profiles on a central server running Active Directory which cache the profiles locally on each terminal server as well. When one, and just that one, user tries to login she gets this error message (roughly translated from Swedish): "You could not be logged in becouse your principle could not be registered. Check that you're connected to the network or ask your administrator Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service." Anyone have an idea about this? I'm stumped ... So I installed it and downloaded Ubuntu 12.04 using Ubuntu 14. Now, I have 2 home partitions and 2 boot partitions. One home and boot is mounted at /media and the other one is /home and /boot. I cannot get rid of /media/HOME and /media/BOOT even using Gparted. How do I get remove them?

I know that my video card is not and will not be supported for Linux. And, when I run Update Manager, I am asked if I want to execute a "partial install." When I answer "yes," I receive the message above. • New laptop, Windows 8.1, attempting dual install. Ubuntu installer doesn't 'see' existing OS

  Though I've used Ubuntu for a few years, I'm new to installation. Previously I had help and now I'm doing it alone (moved across the world). Windows 8.1 came preinstalled on my new laptop (Toshiba Satellite C70-A-17C - Core i5, 8 GB RAM, 750 GB HDD). I have already followed a few steps I found online to prepare for a dual install (with Ubuntu 14.04). I backed up Windows, created a bootable Ubuntu USB and DVD (just in case one didn't work), turned off fast boot and secure boot, and shrunk C:/. The new unallocated drive portion is 292.97 GB. After shrinking C:/, I restarted Windows a couple of times to make sure everything was working fine (it is). I then attempted to install with the Ubuntu live USB. However, the Ubuntu installer doesn't see that Windows 8.1 is already installed. I don't understand, and don't want to mess with Ubuntu partitioning when I don't know where the partitions will be created. My concern is that, if I go further with the installation process, Windows might be overwritten or compromised in some way. I then tried to reboot using the Ubuntu live DVD, thinking I might get a different result. However, I can't figure out how to make the laptop boot from the CD drive. I went into the BIOS and found no option there, either. Any help is very appreciated! EDIT: Looks like I can't link directly to each photo. Here is my album of screenshots: http://imgur.com/a/zChCo Here you can see that there's no option to boot from CD drive, only USB. Everything looks okay so far. I don't understand this. Ubuntu has not yet been installed. Unmounting partitions? (I chose 'no'.) Even though the laptop came pre-installed with Windows 8.1, the Ubuntu USB installer can't see it. I chose 'something else'. I need to pick and format partitions. I scrolled down and took a second shot to include all information. Completely lost and cancelled installation.

• Windows/Samba connection error

  I have a Linux fileserver serving up /home for linux and windows users. I was able to connect from my windows client, but not from a DC. Then suddenly I could connect from the DC too. The linux servers run Centrify clients, and as such are part of the domain. All on same subnet. This is what the the log.smbd says, repeatedly: [2010/02/11 11:25:57, 0] lib/util_sock.c:read_data(534) read_data: read failure for 4 bytes to client 192.168.200.3. Error = Connection reset by peer On Windows it appeared as an "unknown error". EDIT: the error code is "0x80004005". We are developing a system depended on the samba share, and are worried this will appear again. It would be nice to pin point the root of this. Any ideas what this might be? Places to look?
