  • As a team should we develop locally and merge into the dev server, or develop on the dev server?

    Hey, Recently I was tasked with writing up formal procedures for a team based development enviroment. We have several projects with multiple modules each. Right now there are only two programmers, however there are plans to expand to 4-6 programmers. Each programmer will be working on the same project and possibly pages which may cause over writing or error issues. So far the ideal solution I have thought up is: Local development (WAMP/VM or some virtual server instance on their own machine). Once a developer has finished their developments, they check it into the CVS Repository and merge it wih other fixes etc. The CVS version is then deployed to the primary dev server for testing by the devs. The MySQL DAtabases are kept on the primary dev server and users may remotely connect to it. Any Schema / Data alterations are run through a DB Admin who will notify all devs of any DB Changes (Which should be rare). Does anyone see an issue with this or have a better solution?

    At the moment, I've got a JSON file with content looking like this: { "username": "test", "someNumber":100 } I'm using JSON.Net to fetch the .JSON file from a webserver - C#: var http = new HttpClient(); http.MaxResponseContentBufferSize = Int32.MaxValue; var response = await http.GetStringAsync(URI); var result = JsonConvert.DeserializeObject<DatClass.Result>(response); This works great together with the class getting/setting the properties. However, what I would like to know is whether there's a good way for a user to update the .JSON file through a textbox UI? As in: [textbox - update username] [update button] - username sent to server - .JSON file updated - [textblock - showing updated username in UI]. I'm not looking for exact code solutions, I'm rather looking for good solutions on this, and/or if this is a terrible idea of an easy database(?).

  • Web Applications Development: Security practices for Application design

    Hi, As I am creating more web applications that are targeted for multiple users, I figured out that I have to start thinking about user management and security. At a glance and in my ideal world, all users belong to a group. Permissions and access is thus defined per group (and inherited by the users of that group). Logically, I have my group of administrators, which are identified with a level "7" (integer) clearance. A group of webusers have for example level "1". This in generally all works great for me, but I need some kind of list that I have to keep in mind how I secure my system, and some general practices. I am not looking for a specific environment; I want to learn the why's and how's. An example is privilege escalation. If someone would be able to "push" themselves inside a group with higher privileges, for example the Administration, how can I prevent this, or what measures should I take to have some sort of precaution? I don't like in that case to walk into a caveat. My question is basically: where can I find a good resource, list, policy, book that explains the security of web applications, the why's, the how's and readable if you don't have any experience in the realm of advanced security? I prefer a free resource, as I believe I couldn't be the first one who thought about this. Thank you for your answers, comments and feedback.

  • Has jQuery core development been slowing down?

    So, I regularly head over to jQuery's Commit History on GitHub just to read through the new code committed to jQuery core. But there hasn't been anything new committed since April 24th. I've already read through jQuery core a few times and I'm pretty familiar with it which is why I like reading the commits. I just like to see what changed, why it was changed, etc. Why has there been a slow down in jQuery commits on GitHub? Anyone else have some recommendations for where I can go to view good javascript code being developed? My motive for reading jQuery's commit history is similar to the reasons I browse through accepted answers here on stackoverflow - to learn from people smarter than me. With that said, I am interested in the answer to this questions title, but I am more interested in finding a substitute to reading the jQuery commits.

    Dear programmers of StackOverflow, recently me and two of my friends from college started a software company. We are developing web-applications using GWT-Spring-Hibernate and other helper frameworks. In a couple of months, we managed to set up a stable back-end and produced some demo programs for CRM solutions. Our area of interest is CRM where we can combine the flexibility of our back-end with the slick looking GWT based GUIs. Unfortunately we live in a third world country (well, kind of two and a half :) and no one here gives our work enough credit, or really cares about the advantages of web-apps. We are stuck at the moment because our current clients do not want to pay that much money for just "putting their local app on the web". Since we can not find satisfying work here, we have decided to work online/international. I was wondering if you guys know a good freelance kind of sites where we can throw ourselves into the market.. Also a question from frustration, to those who are in the field or knowledgeable/interested about web based CRM, how much would you ask/pay for lets say a web app which will keep track of all the patients of a multi-branch clinic also allowing the patients to access to view their own records?   • Does anyone still believe in the Capability Maturity Model for Software?

    Ten years ago when I first encountered the CMM for software I was, I suppose like many, struck by how accurately it seemed to describe the chaotic "level one" state of software development in many businesses, particularly with its reference to reliance on heroes. It also seemed to provide realistic guidance for an organisation to progress up the levels improving their processes. But while it seemed to provide a good model and realistic guidance for improvement, I never really witnessed an adherence to CMM having a significant positive impact on any organisation I have worked for, or with. I know of one large software consultancy that claims CMM level 5 - the highest level - when I can see first hand that their processes are as chaotic, and the quality of their software products as varied, as other, non-CMM businesses. So I'm wondering, has anyone seen a real, tangible benefit from adherence to process improvement according to CMM? And if you have seen improvement, do you think that the improvement was specifically attributable to CMM, or would an alternative approach (such as six-sigma) have been equally or more beneficial?     I have some experience with Eclipse and Qt creator and am somewhat disappointed in their debuggers, less so in their editors. On Windows, I like Visual Studio for debugging and SlickEdit for editing (SE is also available on Linux). Is there an IDE that is somehow better than the two mentioned?

    Hi, i was just asked today, but i couldn't answer precisely so that's why i'm asking here :-) There is any book about Firewall design and implementations (Unix environment and C)? For sure, i could recommend TCP/IP books, and what i did, but there is some design decisions, that are not related with TCP/IP. For sure, i said about the netfilter/iptables (RTFSC) but as well we cannot assume that the netfilter/iptables is the best approach since we don't have too many baselines (ok, we could compare it with PF, but again, read source code to understand design decisions is not always the best way). So if anybody knows a book about this theme, please shoot it!

  • Limit Apache to 1 request per process

    I have a few long running processes on apache and when the server gets a bit of a load they all seem to couple into 3-4 processes. I've tried setting the MaxRequestsPerChild to 1 and that works, but spawning new processes all the time is expensive.   • NUNIT + VS2010 = Unable to copy file from /obj to /bin...being used by another process

    I am trying to run some unit tests using NUnit while I have the project open, and VS 2010 cannot rebuild the project while the assembly is loaded in NUnit. I have looked around and haven't found any solutions that seen to fix it. I can close NUnit, then the project builds fine. This is a the same solution based on Rob Conery's BDD demo found here: http://tekpub.com/view/concepts/5 Any thoughts?

  • OpenGL ES and real world development

    Hi Guys, I'm trying to learn OpenGL ES quickly (I know, I know, but these are the pressures that have been thrusted upon me) and I have been read around a fair bit, which lots of success at rendering basic models, some basic lighting and 'some' texturing success too. But this is CONSTANTLY the point at which all OpenGL ES tutorials end, they never say more of what a real life app may need. So I have a few questions that Im hoping arent too difficult. How do people get 3d models from their favorite 3d modeling tool into the iPhone/iPad application? I have seen a couple of blog posts where people have written some python scripts for tools like Blender which create .h files that you can use, is this what people seem to do everytime? Or do the "big" tooling suites (3DS, Maya, etc...) have exporting features? Say I have my model in a nice .h file, all the vertexes, texture points, etc.. are lined up, how to I make my model (say of a basic person) walk? Or to be more general, how do you animate "part" of a model (legs only, turn head, etc...)? Do they need to be a massive mash-up of many different tiny models, or can you pre-bake animations these days "into" models (somehow) Truely great 3D games for the iPhone are (im sure) unbelievably complex, but how do people (game dev firms) seem to manage that designer/developer workflow? Surely not all the animations, textures, etc... are done programatically. I hope these are not stupid questions, and in actual fact, my app that Im trying to investigate how to make is really quite simple, just a basic 3D model that I want to be able to pan/tilt around using touch. Has anyone ever done/seen anything like this that I might be able to read up on? Thanks for any help you can give, I appreciate all types of response big or small :) Cheers, Mark

  • Planning a skillset for a fallback career [closed]

    I'm not too certain this is a SO question, but I didn't think it belonged in meta either. Long story short, I am bioinformatics researcher. I like to code, it's my favourite part of the job. I have been thinking for a while that if academia is not kind to me, I might seek a career in software development. My current contract is for three years and I would like to spend some time over the next 3 three years learning and practicing software development as possible. Python seems like a popular language and it what I mostly use to do things for me, but I am also in heavy use of R. So my main question is: Are python and R good things to be learning with a sotfware dev goal in mind, and if so, is there any particular type of programming or software that might be useful to have experience with.   • cruise control turns off on me when i use the system process

    Cruise control service set to System - Allow user to interact with desktop for the service. I log out with my user id and cruise control turns off. Any idea what is going on here? If I start the service a console window comes up. As soon as I close it cruise control also turns off... I need it to always be on... any ideas?
