  Just a quick post, mainly to test out the new blog format but related to a question on the #sqlhelp hashtag. The question came from Justin Dearing (@zippy1981) as: So I take it database_id isn’t an ever incrementing value. #sqlhelp When a new database is created it is given the lowest available ID. This either is in a gap in IDs where a database has been dropped or the database ID is incremented by one from the highest current ID if there are no gaps to fill. To see this in action, connect to your sandbox server and try this: USE MASTER GO CREATE DATABASE cherry GO USE cherry GO SELECT DB_ID() GO CREATE DATABASE grape GO USE grape GO SELECT DB_ID() GO CREATE DATABASE melon GO USE melon GO SELECT DB_ID() GO USE MASTER GO DROP DATABASE grape GO CREATE DATABASE kiwi GO USE kiwi GO SELECT DB_ID() GO USE MASTER GO DROP DATABASE cherry DROP DATABASE melon DROP DATABASE kiwi You should get an incrementing series of database IDs as the databases are created until the last one where the new database gets allocated the ID that is missing because one was dropped.

• Visual Tree Enumeration

  I feel compelled to post this blog because I find I’m repeatedly posting this same code in silverlight and windows-phone-7 answers in Stackoverflow. One common task that we feel we need to do is burrow into the visual tree in a Silverlight or Windows Phone 7 application (actually more recently I found myself doing this in WPF as well).  This allows access to details that aren’t exposed directly by some controls.  A good example of this sort of requirement is found in the “Restoring exact scroll position of a listbox in Windows Phone 7”  question on stackoverflow.  This required that the scroll position of the scroll viewer internal to a listbox be accessed. A caveat One caveat here is that we should seriously challenge the need for this burrowing since it may indicate that there is a design problem.  Burrowing into the visual tree or indeed burrowing out to containing ancestors could represent significant coupling between module boundaries and that generally isn’t a good idea. Why isn’t this idea just not cast aside as a no-no?  Well the whole concept of a “Templated Control”, which are in extensive use in these applications, opens the coupling between the content of the visual tree and the internal code of a control.   For example, I can completely change the appearance and positioning of elements that make up a ComboBox.  The ComboBox control relies on specific template parts having set names of a specified type being present in my template.  Rightly or wrongly this does kind of give license to writing code that has similar coupling. Hasn’t this been done already? Yes it has.  There are number of blogs already out there with similar solutions.  In fact if you are using Silverlight toolkit the VisualTreeExtensions class already provides this feature.  However I prefer my specific code because of the simplicity principle I hold to.  Only write the minimum code necessary to give all the features needed.  In this case I add just two extension methods Ancestors and Descendents, note I don’t bother with “Get” or “Visual” prefixes.  Also I haven’t added Parent or Children methods nor additional “AndSelf” methods because all but Children is achievable with the addition of some other Linq methods.  I decided to give Descendents an additional overload for depth hence a depth of 1 is equivalent to Children but this overload is a little more flexible than simply Children. Vitess- a  new project released by YouTube, written in Go, it’s a frontend to MySQL. It does a lot of optimization on the fly, it rewrites queries and acts as a proxy. Currently it serves every YouTube database request. It’s RPC based. Zookeeper - a distributed lock server. It’s used for configuration. Really interesting piece of technology. Hard to use correctly so read the manual Wiseguy - a CGI servlet container. Spitfire - a templating system. It has an abstract syntax tree that let’s them do transformations to make things go faster. Serialization formats - no matter which one you use, they are all expensive. Measure. Don’t use pickle. Not a good choice. Found protocol buffers slow.   Welcome everyone to T-SQL Tuesday Episode 34!  When last we tuned in, Mike Fal (b|t) hosted Trick Shots.  These highlighted techniques or tricks that you figured out on your own which helped you understand SQL Server better. This month, I'm asking you to look back this past week, year, century, or hour...to a time when you COULDN'T figure it out.  When you were stuck on a SQL Server problem and you had to seek help. In the beginning... SQL Server has changed a lot since I started with it.  <Cranky Old Guy> Back in my day, Books Online was neither.  There were no blogs. Google was the third-place search site. There were perhaps two or three community forums where you could ask questions.  (Besides the Microsoft newsgroups...which you had to access with Usenet.  And endure the wrath of...Celko.)  Your "training" was reading a book, made from real dead trees, that you bought from your choice of brick-and-mortar bookstore. And except for your local user groups, there were no conferences, seminars, SQL Saturdays, or any online video hookups where you could interact with a person. You'd have to call Microsoft Support...on the phone...a LANDLINE phone.  And none of this "SQL Family" business!</Cranky Old Guy> Even now, with all these excellent resources available, it's still daunting for a beginner to seek help for SQL Server.  The product is roughly 1247.4523 times larger than it was 15 years ago, and it's simply impossible to know everything about it.*  So whether you are a beginner, or a seasoned pro of over a decade's experience, what do you do when you need help on SQL Server? That's so meta... In the spirit of offering help, here are some suggestions for your topic: Tell us about a person or SQL Server community who have been helpful to you.  It can be about a technical problem, or not, e.g. someone who volunteered for your local SQL Saturday.  Sing their praises!  Let the world know who they are! Do you have any tricks for using Books Online?  Do you use the locally installed product, or are you completely online with BOL/MSDN/Technet, and why? If you've been using SQL Server for over 10 years, how has your help-seeking changed? Are you using Twitter, StackOverflow, MSDN Forums, or another resource that didn't exist when you started? What made you switch? Do you spend more time helping others than seeking help? What motivates you to help, and how do you contribute? Structure your post along the lyrics to The Beatles song Help! Audio or video renditions are particularly welcome! Lyrics must include reference to SQL Server terminology or community, and performances must be in your voice or include you playing an instrument. I inherited this structure: Informational site related to our specific industry lives at: http://website.com StoreFront where we sell product related to our industry lives at: http://store.website.com The informational site gives a lot of good information on how to use the products we sell. The storefront is primarily used for the ecommerce function of selling the products, but there is a lot of info specific to the products on that site. Question: Is our main domain http://website.com getting page rank credit for the product info contained at http://store.website.com? Would there be a benefit to changing the structure?

• Jersey 2.0 Integrated into GlassFish 4.0

  The latest promoted build of GlassFish 4.0 (glassfish-4.0-b43.zip) now contains upgraded Jersey version, 2.0-m05. Users are getting an early access to the implementation of some parts of the JAX-RS 2.0 API Early Draft Review 3. The appropriate JAX-RS bundle, version 2.0-m09 , gets bundled into GlassFish 4.0 as well. What should work The simple answer is: all the basic stuff. We have particularly tested the following two examples: simple hello world webapp multipart webapp Both above linked archives contain adjusted projects, so that resulting war files do not bundle any Jersey dependencies. Both also use Jersey 2 specific Servlet class, org.glassfish.jersey.servlet.ServletContainer, for deployment.   I've got a pretty weird scenario that I was wondering someone could help me out with. I recently created a blog site and noticed that search engines have been including the content of my footer in with the description. This presents a problem because my footer is basic a brief legal statement saying that the views are my own and don't represent the company I work for (and yada yada yada). So, basically, I need a way to prevent search engines from indexint that content in my footer or even my footer altogether. I've been looking back through some of my SEO books and searching through forums but this doesn't seem possible. Is it possible to keep search engines from indexing only certain content on a page? If it isn't possible, what alternatives are there to ensure this legal mumbo jumbo doesn't show up in the results?

Now suddenly from last two days it reduced the amount of traffic from 70% to 20% and also when I am trying to search for the exact posts that I can created even after appending my website name to it does not show any results for that.   I am looking for some resources on the JVM bytecode. Ideally I would for a short book; something more than a blog post but not a 800 pages tome. If it is relevant, I am a Scala developer, not a Java one, although I know Java just fine. I would like something that allowed me to read JVM bytecode and answer questions such as: Why does the bytecode has to know about high level construct such as classes? Are subtyping relations still visible in bytecode? How does type erasure work exactly? How do Oracle and Dalvik bytecode differ, and what consequences does this have for, say, developing Android apps with Scala? How does the JVM manage the stack, and why exactly this creates issues with tail call elimination? and so on.

• Is there a way to add Google Docs-like comments to any web page?

  You know the comments on Google Docs word processing documents? And how it creates a little discussion over in the right-hand margin? I love it. Great for collaboration. I want to free it from Google Docs so I can use it with clients to discuss mock-ups or scaffolded websites. Searching Google for "add comments [or discussions] to any website" only gets you results for adding blog-like comments (Disqus, JS-Kit, etc.) Anyone know of a solution for what I'm after here?

• CLR via C# - first post of many!

  I am currently reading CLR via C# ISBN 978-0-7356-2704-8. Whilst quite correctly described by the publisher as a "Deep Dive", this is a book that C# developers with 6-18 months plus experiance ought to read. Certainly any serious Microsoft programming shop ought to have a copy.  For our VB.NET bretheren, a book of this quality is a good excuse to learn C#. (And before you ask, my favourite language of C# and VB.NET is the one that gets me the next contract!) When I started programming 31 years ago I went through IBM 360 Orientation - this gave me an comprehension of what worked best at the machine code level - this is the first book I have found that explains the the working of the Dot Net framework to explain why particular choices are good, This is my first blog post here. • New Time Zone Patch DST V18 is available

  Sorry for not updating the blog more often at the moment - but more updates will come soon as I play around with Oracle Restart and single instance databases in ASM with Oracle 11.2. Just on the side there's a new time zone patch to DST V18 available since May 2012. You can download it via PATCH download from MOS with the patch number: 13417321 What do you think? Will Lufthansa operate a faster jet the other night? Will the jet stream be more powerful? Or a better type of fuel? Or is it just the travel portal which hasn't applied the correct time zone patches to catch DST change that night in the US whereas it happens two weeks later in Europe? Guess ...
