  • returning autorelease NSString still causes memory leaks

    I have a simple function that returns an NSString after decoding it. I use it a lot throughout my application, and it appears to create a memory leak (according to "leaks" tool) every time I use it. Leaks tells me the problem is on the line where I alloc the NSString that I am going to return, even though I autorelease it. Here is the function: -(NSString *) decodeValue { NSString *newString; newString = [self stringByReplacingOccurrencesOfString:@"#" withString:@"$"]; NSData *stateData = [NSData dataWithBase64EncodedString:newString]; NSString *convertState = [[[NSString alloc] initWithData:stateData encoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding] autorelease]; return convertState; } My understanding of [autorelease] is that it should be used in exactly this way... where I want to hold onto the object just long enough to return it in my function and then let the object be autoreleased later. So I believe I can use this function through code like this without manually releasing anything: NSString *myDecodedString = [myString decodeValue]; But this process is reporting leaks and I don't understand how to change it to avoid the leaks. What am I doing wrong?

  • Core Animation performance on iphone

    I'm trying to do some animations using Core Animation on the iphone. I'm using CABasicAnimation on CALayer. It's a straight forward animation from a random place at the top of the screen to the bottom of the screen at random speed, I have 30 elements that doing the same animation continuously until another action happens. But the performance on the iPhone 3G is very sluggish when the animations start. The image is only 8k. Is this the right approach? How should I change so it performs better. // image cached somewhere else.   • [iphone] UIControlEventTouchDragEnter doesn't seem to work for catching a tap that slides into a con

    I wanted to allow for a method to get called, if a finger was dragged from outside into the bounds of a control. I thought UIControlEventTouchDragEnter would do it, but it doesn't seem to. Does anyone know if there is a way to trigger an action based on a tap sliding into a control?     I have added a UILabel to my view programmatically like this: myLabel = [[UILabel alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(0.0f, 0.0f, 100.0f, 30.0f)]; myLabel.center = CGPointMake(160.0f, 120.0f); myLabel.backgroundColor = [UIColor clearColor]; myLabel.textColor = [UIColor whiteColor]; myLabel.font = [UIFont fontWithName:@"Helvetica" size: 18.0]; myLabel.textAlignment = UITextAlignmentCenter; myLabel.text = @"Hello"; [self.myView addSubview:myLabel]; To add a label to my view. What I can't seem to find out is once I'm done w/ the label (at a future point) how can I delete it from the view? [myLabel release] doesn't seem to work which I think makes sense because the view it's added to probably retained it's over reference. So what is the best practice?

  • Google Drive Update keeps throwing an error when I try to save a thumbnail

    The Base64 string checks out fine. I was able to export it to another website and download it again as my image. When I try to do an update using the Drive Javascript api, it just keeps returning this error: Invalidvaluefor:Notavalidbase64bytestring I also true making the string URL safe. Per this page https://google-api-client-libraries.appspot.com/documentation/drive/v2/python/latest/drive_v2.files.html Am I doing something wrong here, the documentation says send Base64, the string is valid and, the string is intact throughout the process, but Google will not accept it? I am using the javascript api, I think there is maybe a bug sending the thumbnail using the javascript api.     I'm using Ad Hoc distribution to send preview/beta version of my iPhone apps to customers for approval. I'm always sending a zipped application and mobileprovision files. Sometimes however I encountered situation when nothing in the application changed but we needed to add a new device for testing. I've added a device in Provisioning portal and assigned it to a provisioning profile my application uses for ad hoc distribution. I've downloaded new mobileprovision file and imported it to xcode now the question is do I need to rebuild the application to enable the app on a new device or would it be enough to just send old build with updated mobileprovision file?

A user might not have any idea where "12345 Pineapple" is located... so I want to show something like "Pineapple and Main"... or (larger, major roads) like "US-140 and Hwy 76". I don't really care what "major" is defined as... perhaps any road with higher speed limits... or more than 3 lanes... etc. I don't really care what "close by" is defines as... perhaps within 0-10 miles... or just "closest found".

That way is doesn't show up inside the application bundle as a file and it's not subject to manipulation by a user (whether good-intentioned or bad). Is this even possible?   • iPhone "touchesBegan" and "touchesMoved" message ... do not move to centre of touch

    I am modifying the "MoveMe" example from the apple web site. When I get the "touchesMoved" message I move the centre of the target view to the centre of the touch. Is there a way that when the touch starts ("touchesBegan" message) I can remember the offset from the target view and keep that offset. Let me know if this is hard to understand and I will try to explain it a bit better.

    Hi all, I'm trying to figure out if I can get what I want out of UIScrollView through some trickery or whether I need to roll my own scroll view: I have a series of items in row that I want to scroll through. One item should always be centered in the view, but other items should be visible to either side. In other words, I want normal scrolling and edge bouncing, but I want the deceleration when the user ends a touch to naturally settle at some specified stop point. (Actually now that I think of it, this behavior is similar to coverflow in this respect.) I know UIScrollView doesn't do this out of the box, but does anyone have suggestions for how it might be made to do this, or if anyone's spotted any code that accomplishes something similar (I'm loathe to reimplement all the math for deceleration and edge bounce) Thanks!

  • How can I change 'self.view' within a button method created outside of 'loadView'

    Hey guys. So I am creating buttons dynamically within loadView. Each of these buttons is given an action using the @Selector method, such as : [button addTarget:self action:@selector(showCCView) forControlEvents:UIControlEventTouchUpInside]; Now that showCCView method is defined outside of loadView, where this above statement is located. The point of the method is to change the view currently on the screen (so set self.view = ccView). It gives me an error every time I try and access self.view outside of loadView, and even sometimes when I try and access it at random places within loadView, it just has been acting really weird. I tried to change it around so I wouldn't have to deal with this either. I had made a function + (void) showView: (UIView*) oldView: (UIView*) newView; but this didn't work out either because the @Selector was being real prissy about using it with a function that needed two parameters.   • UIViewController prevent view from unloading

    When my iPhone app receives a Memory warning the views of UIViewControllers that are not currently visible get unloaded. In one particular controller unloading the view and the outlets is rather fatal. I'm looking for a way to prevent this view from being unloaded. I find this behavior rather stupid - I have a cache mechanism, so when a memory warning comes - I unload myself tons of data and I free enough memory, but I definitely need this view untouched. I see UIViewController has a method 'unloadViewIfReloadable', which gets called when the Memory Warning comes. Does anybody know how to tell Cocoa Touch that my view is not reloadable? Any other suggestions how to prevent my view from being unloaded on Memory Warning? Thanks in advance

  • UIToolbar on top of navigation bar - black opaque doesn't blend

    I am trying to put a UIToolbar on the right side of a UINavigationBar, to add multiple buttons on that side. When I leave the tint of both to Default, they blend fine. But when I set both of them to BlackOpaque, they don't blend very well. I can see the edge of where the toolbar starts very clearly. I've tried this through IB and code. Same result in both cases. Anyone run into this before, or can offer some suggestions?
