• What could cause random files being downloaded without permission?

  I have been having issues lately with a certain directory. It seems someone is placing files into it, or something of that sort, and any attempt to delete them is successful, HOWEVER they reappear over time (maybe not the exact same ones, but random files). I will provide you the information I can and several pictures of my problem: sandbox.mys4l.com/visual/files/b1.jpg Files like this have been appearing in my /visual/ folder, and I have no clue where they are coming from. sandbox.mys4l.com/visual/files/b2.jpg This is what is inside on of those weird files, it appears to be nothing problematic. sandbox.mys4l.com/visual/files/b4.jpg As you can see, in the time it took me to take the first picture, more odd files showed up. These log files are also being uploaded to this directory, and I know I didn't put them there. sandbox.mys4l.com/visual/files/b7.jpg This inside one of these mysterious .log files, I'm not sure what it's all about. These files only appear to be going into this specific area, and I'm not sure of their origin, only that they will not go away. I have done a full system scan at least twice with an up-to-date virus scan, and have looked for an unknown script which may be writing them there. Nothing has come up, so I come to you guys as I hear this is the best place to find answers. Hope this problem has a solution!

• raid 0 data recovery?

  HI All, I have two identical seagate 7200.9 500Gb drives confiured as a RAID 0 spanned disk in windows. One of the drives has lost power and wont spin up at all. I know this normally means death for the data on both drives but i have a cunning plan.. DISK 1 - NO POWER RAID 0 DISK DISK 2 - FULLY FUNCTIONAL RAID 0 DISK DISK 3 - FULLY FUNCTIONAL SPARE DISK Copy the working drive (disk 2) data to a third 500GB DISK (disk 3), remove the logic board from the working disk (disk 2) and replace it with the non working logic board on the broken drive (disk 1) , then hopefully recreate the RAID 0 with disk 1 and disk 3, just long enough to get the data off it. Hope this makes sense, here are my questions: Windows disk manager atm recognises disk 2 but wont let me access it in anyway, therefore copying the data off it (or getting a disk image) cant be done in windows. Does anyone know of any software (in linux or self booting) that would allow me to access this disk? Anyone know of any software that will recreate the spanned drive off two disk images Am i missing any key information that means i definitely shouldn't even bother starting this, i know its a long shot anyway but its worth a try unless i definitely cant do it. The irritating thing is that i am sure its a logic board failure on disk 1 as it simply wont power up at all, suddenly no signs of life, so i am sure the data is intact! • Random Excel bug when referencing a different sheet

  I am getting a very strange error anytime I try to use a formula pointing to a cell in a different sheet from the active one (even as simple as "=Sheet2!A1"). This started happening all of a sudden, and without any change in the system - only I seem to having started having the problem since I started using a workbook from another colleague with the same issue. I'm running Excel 2003 SP3 on XP. With little variants, whenever I reference a cell in a different sheet, from any formula, and then press Enter, the formula gets written on a different cell from the one I was editing it in, and throws a REF error. Example: I start editing in cell A1 of Sheet 1, type "=", then move the cursor to cell B2 of Sheet 2 (that may contain any value), and press Enter. At this stage you would expect cell A1 in Sheet 1 to contain formula "=Sheet2!B2" and display the value in that cell. Instead what happens is that the cell remains empty, and another random cell of Sheet 1 gets populated with something like "=Sheet2!#REF!" throwing an error. Interestingly, the error does not happen when I manually type the cell reference in (ie. without moving the cursor to the second sheet). Hope this is making any sense - any ideas are welcome! • Windows 7 fails to connect to the internet a few minutes after startup

  Problem Earlier today, when I turned on my desktop computer, my internet connection works fine. Cryptocurrency miners connecting and hashing as usual and I can browse websites. But after a few minutes, my miner fails indicating that there is something wrong with my internet connection. Tried refreshing my browser and is stuck at "resolving host", and then presented me an error. After that, i can't browse sites anymore. But the weird thing is that the network icon in Windows 7 shows no signs of problems. Solutions Made Restarted my computer without doing anything: Problem persists. Tried using the network troubleshooter of windows: Reported no problems Stopped bonjour still no progress. Loaded windows using Last good config: still no progress. Restarted Modem: No change. Current Status I currently did a system restore to my system to a point before installing the latest update from Microsoft. Because earlier today, I installed some updates and after that, the problem started to appear. (After system restore, same problem.) Latest Programs installed before the problem MS Visual Studio 2013 (but internet still worked fine after the install). I hope someone could provide answers on this problem. It is my first time encountering this. EDIT: Additional Info OS: Windows 7 SP1 64-bit AV: Avast Free Antivirus Internet Connection Type: Ethernet It appears that my Laptop can't even connect to the machine thru Remote Desktop My laptop and phone on WiFi works fine and can connect to the internet. EDIT 2: Whenever I boot into Safe Mode, my Internet is fine.

• Do any well-known CAs issue Elliptic Curve certificates?

  Background I've seen that Comodo has an elliptic curve root ("COMODO ECC Certification Authority"), but I don't see mention of EC certificates on their web site. Does Certicom have intellectual property rights that prevent other issuers from offering EC certificates? Does a widely-used browser fail to support ECC? Is ECC a bad fit for traditional PKI use like web server authentication? Or is there just no demand for it? I'm interested in switching to elliptic curve because of the NSA Suite B recommendation. But it doesn't seem practical for many applications. Bounty Criteria To claim the bounty, an answer must provide a link to a page or pages at a well-known CA's website that describes the ECC certificate options they offer, prices, and how to purchase one. In this context, "well-known" means that the proper root certificate must be included by default in Firefox 3.5 and IE 8. If multiple qualifying answers are provided (one can hope!), the one with the cheapest certificate from a ubiquitous CA will win the bounty. If that doesn't eliminate any ties (still hoping!), I'll have to choose an answer at my discretion. Remember, someone always claims at least half of the bounty, so please give it a shot even if you don't have all the answers.

• 2010 cgi script failure

  Hi. I hope you can help, I'm just a beginner! I have listed a few extra details which may not be relevant. I upload cgi scripts onto local/personal directory on a Apache/2.2.10 server, using FTP95Pro in ASCII. The scripts execute correctly using perl on my web-server in a terminal session. Thus my code has no fatal syntax errors. Webpages 'action' each cgi script at /cgi-bin/. There are symbolic links which link system directory files to my local directory files. FollowSymLinks is enabled (unsure how). Permissions are correct (755). This set-up hasnt changed, apparently. The scripts have excuted perfectly for years, up to 2010. But now, in 2010, I have replaced working scripts with new script/files, now with exactly the same text, filename and permissions. Only the date (last modified) has changed. But now I receive a 500 Internal Server Error, and cannot determine why. My server administator assumes I have code errors. But code is unchanged since last year, and it runs fine (albeit no arguments) on web-server console using perl myscript.cgi Is there anything you can think of which may have changed ? I'm suspicious of the new decade. I think the server swapped from Linux to Windows OS last year, but my server administrator got it all working OK. Is there something unusual he may have missed, related to 2010 ? Thank you in advance

• Is this processor burned?

  I've recently exchange the processors in two PCChips boards. Both boards are LGA775. Board A is P17G(Pentium 4 HyperThreading 3GHz) and board B is P49G(Pentium Dual Core 3GHz). I use board A to watch videos, and some of them are 3GB size and this is why I exchanged the CPU. I installed Dual Core in board A and it worked out of the box, now 3GB videos use 5% of CPU instead of 50%. When I installed the pentium in the board B, I forgot to connect the 4pin power and, when i powered on the PC, the CPU fan stay off. Then, I connected all right this time, and now the board doesnt show video. I think the CPU is not working but im not sure about that. The PC turns on and the HD spins, the CPU fan spins, network socket blinking, but not video and case power led is neither blinking. I tried with other PSU and everything was the same. I figure out that CPU have that paste above. IDK really what's happening, I hope I dont have to buy another CPU. Is it Burned?

• PHP cannot connect to MySQL

  Hello, I recently installed Apache 2 + PHP 5.3.1 + MySQL 5.1.44 on my Windows 7 64bit machine following this guide: http://sleeplessgeek.blogspot.com/2010/01/setting-up-apache-php-mysql-phpmyadmin.html It all went fine, php is working great (even with XDebug) but I cannot connect to mysql server. A simple script I wrote to test connection (yes, root has no pass): $username = "root"; $password = ""; $database = "test"; $hostname = "localhost"; $conn = mysql_connect($hostname, $username, $password) or die("Unable to connect to MySQL Database!!"); It prints this error after 60sec of timeout: Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond. I can connect to mysql using cmdmysql -h localhost -u root Services are working properly. There also seems to be a problem with PhpMyAdmin (using 3.2.5). As soon as I type user and pass the page loads and turns blank (content-lenght in headers is 0 but status code is 302 Found). Looks like something wrong with cookies (my auth method). I hope someone has a clue, it has to be something dumb simple I missed. Thanks in advance.

  iam new in programming and using linux. My Question is, is it possible to add Netem Filter Rules later ? I want to create an PHP-Interface for Netem and I don't know how much filters were required. This should be some kind of dynamically. In Example : A user with a static IP starts an Netem Command (Latency) with PHP Interface this means these five command werde executed by php in the first step $classid = 11; $handle = 10; "sudo tc qdisc add dev eth0 handle 1: root htb"; "sudo tc class add dev eth0 parent 1: classid 1:1 htb rate 100Mbps"; "sudo tc class add dev eth0 parent 1:1 classid 1:$classid htb rate 100Mbps"; "sudo tc qdisc add dev eth0 parent 1:$classid handle $handle: netem delay 100ms"; "sudo tc filter add dev eth0 protocol ip parent 1:0 prio 3 u32 match ip dst $dest flowid 1:$classid"; Now, if there would be a second user who wants to use Netem independent of the first user, i only want to execute the last 3 commands, like "sudo tc class add dev eth0 parent 1:1 classid 1:$classid htb rate 100Mbps"; "sudo tc qdisc add dev eth0 parent 1:$classid handle $handle: netem delay 100ms"; "sudo tc filter add dev eth0 protocol ip parent 1:0 prio 3 u32 match ip dst $dest flowid 1:$classid"; There is an Algorithmus for increasing variables $classid and $handle. This should work. Now my Question: Is it possible only to add these 3 commands to add a new class with new qdisc and a new filter rule ? Or how can i realize it ? • Is TortoiseSVN really this buggy?

  I have been using tortoise svn for a couple weeks now. I get errors very often. Almost everything I do creates an error. this is with repositories on the internet, locally on my machine or a machine on the network. So I started to keep track. Say if I am working on the head revision (7) in a working copy. I make a change and commit it. It gives me this error. But if I look at the log it tells me that there is now a revision 8 (the commit I just made) but I am still on revision 7. So I need to run update to be on the current revision that I just commited. I hope I explained that clearly. Anyways with all these errors I wonder.. Is TSVN just this unstable, does everyone have these issues. Or is it just me? If just me, what could I be doing wrong?

• Computer does not boot after ram upgrade

  I have a Dell Optiplex GX520 desktop (it's abount 5 yr old) PC with 512 MB DDR2 RAM. Since my computer always swapping I thought I should upgrade my RAM. I bought a Kingmax 2GB DDR2 RAM. But my system does not boot. The status leds are on 2 and 4. The user manual says 'video card failure' wtf? I put back the original module and everything works. I tried many combinations. When I leave the old 512 RAM in and put the 2GB next to it to the other socket my system completes the POST and I'm able to enter the BIOS menu. It says my system has 2.5 GB installed, one 0.5GB and one 2GB in dual asymmetric channel mode. It's seemingly right. Exiting the BIOS setup GRUB loads successfully, but when I try to boot Ubuntu it crashes with kernel panic immediately. Trying to load Windows XP does not get past the loading screen, it crashes with 0x8E stop error. Does this mean the ram I bought is faulty? Or is it just mean that the memory module I bought is too new to be handled my computer? I this case I may exchange the RAM with my friends. No other computer is in my house (my very old box has DDR1 ram, my systers new box has DDR3 ones. I can't plug my memory in neither one.) I'm going to return the RAM to store to replace it with a better one tomorrow. Is there any hope to get this new module work?

I need to provide sftp access to the Apache root directory (/var/www), making sure that the sftp user is chrooted to that path with RWX permissions. I've also tried with ACL, but as I apply ACL RWX permissions for the sftp user to /var/www (dirs and files recursively), it will change the unix permissions as well which is what I don't want. What can I do here? I was thinking I could enable the user www-data to login as sftp, so that it'll be able to modify files/dirs that www-data owns in /var/www. But for some reason I think this would be a stupid move securitywise.

• Ruby on Rails cannot find Initializer?

  Hello, I am trying to deploy an app to a fresh Ubuntu 10 installation using Passenger 2.2.15, Rails 2.3.5, Ruby 1.8.7, and Apache 2.2.14. However, even with a default rails app (sudo rails defaultapp), I am receiving the following error: "no such file to load -- initializer". I'm not sure which files you might need copies of in order to diagnose this problem, so I'll copy a few here and hope that it will help. • Same netmask or /32 for secondary IP on Linux

  There appear to be (at least) two ways to add a secondary IP address to an interface on Linux. By secondary, I mean that it'll accept traffic to the IP address, and responses to connections made to that IP will use it as a source, but any traffic the box originates (e.g., an outgoing TCP connection) will not use the secondary address. Both ways start with adding the primary address, e.g., ip addr add 172.16.8.10/24 dev lan. Then I can add the secondary address with either a netmask of /24 (matching the primary) or /32. If I add it with a /24, it gets flagged secondary, so will not be used as the source of outgoing packets, but that leaves a risk of the two addresses being added in the wrong order by mistake. If I add it with /32, wrong order can't happen, but it doesn't get flagged as secondary, and I'm not sure what the bad effects of that may be. So, I'm wondering, which approach is least likely to break? (If it matters, the main service on this machine is MySQL, but it also runs NFSv3. I'm adding a second machine as a warm standby, and hope to switch between them by changing which owns the secondary IP.)

• Control copy/paste doesn't work

  I have a laptop HP PAVILION dv6-3126er with Windows 7 Home Edition installed and neither control copy nor control paste doesn't work (i've tried: ctrl+c, ctrl+v, shift+c, shift+v, ctrl + insert, shift + insert). I've tried to run a system check through cmd with sfc /scannow, it repaired something, i restarted but it didn't solve the problem. I've also tried many key combinations (like alt+ctrl+fn), but nothing works in any program. In Microsoft Word 2003 in the menu i have no key combination for copy/paste near them (in my previous comp they've been there - in brackets). Shift+Delete works by the way. I brought this laptop a few weeks ago, and i discovered this problem in the first days. I have no viruses because i have had no time to even connect him to internet. Anyways, i checked it for viruses - it is clean. I don't want to do system restore, because i see no reason to do it for a pretty clean system. I hope it is not a problem with the laptop itself. Maybe there is another reason? Maybe i need to do some more system checks? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

• MX setup for a domain registrar and web host with the same domain name

  I have a client that has registered their domain through a registrar, then signed up for hosting on through a different provider, but used the same domain for said provider (didn't re-register the domain, I think the declaration of domain on the host was for CNAME records specifically). The registrar properly routes his emails at his domain name (email hosted by Google), but the problem is, on the hosted site, when an administration action occurs, he is supposed to get an email stating so. The site is sending him an email with PHP and he never receives an email when its to his address with the same domain name; all other domain addresses work just fine. I have to imagine its something misconfigured on the host. From what I can assume, I think that the host sees that the to and from domains are the same, and it decides not to route the email externally. Currently, the registrar uses the proper nameservers for the host, and there are MX records on both the registrar and the host (they are identical entries). I hope I've been clear in my question. If you need further clarification, or additional information of any kind, I can provide it. Thanks in advance.

• What's the issue with this Samba setup?

  I asked this on superuser, but I realized that may be the wrong place. I am duplicating the question here, I hope this is allowed. I am trying to share a directory through samba. In smb.conf I have the following: [global] workgroup = WORKGROUP security = user passdb backend = tdbsam netbios name = <hostname> [share_name] path = </path/to/share> writable = yes valid users = <username> <username>, the user in question, is the owner of directory /path/to/share. Permissions on the directory are 755. If I try to connect from another computer, the connection attempt is unsuccessful (I assume it's an authentication error, because it re-prompts me for the password). The client requires a domain name for authentication, I tried both WORKGROUP and the hostname/netbios name of the samba server. Samba logs on the server have no mention of the failed connection attempt. Firewall on the server is down. What am I doing wrong? Update: have since run smbpasswd -a <username> and now I am getting a clear error message, "not enough permissions to view contents of share".

• Can I use a Drobo FS over the internet? -Or alternative?

  I have a lot of files. A HUGE Aperture library, lots of design work from Photoshop, and a rather large iTunes library too. I really want to get a Drobo FS, the networked one, to store all of my stuff on, so that I can get to it from my MacBook Air (which obviously with its minuscule 64GB drive can't hold my Aperture library by itself) and my iMac which is my main powerhouse. The dealbreaker for me is that I NEED to be able to access my Aperture library, and especially my iTunes library from across the internet. I understand that it will probably be slow and everything, but there's nothing else I can do besides hauling around a huge hard drive with me. So, is there any way I can somehow share my Drobo across the internet, on a VPN or something? My other alternative is to upload everything to my web host, FatCow, which offers unlimited disk space (something I hope to make them regret) and then access it using Expandrive. My only thoughts with this are that with the Drobo, any work that I do locally will be much snappier than if I have to work everything off the cloud. Any suggestions about alternatives would also be welcome.

• How can I tell my dd-wrt router to use someone's Amazon Affiliates link when I point my browser to amazon.com?

  Here's what I'd like to do. Instead of a one-time donation to one of my favorite free tools (junecloud.com) I'd like to do what they suggest here and use their Amazon Affiliates link to do all my Amazon shopping. I shop at amazon once or twice a week, so this is a great way to let them earn lots of long-term cash without me dropping a dime. My thought was to go into my dd-wrt enabled router and tell it, "any time I go to amazon.com on any computer in the house, please go to http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?link_code=ur2&tag=junecloud-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&location=%2F instead. (That URL simply redirects me to amazon.com but every purchase I make during that session is credited to JuneCloud.) Once logged into dd-wrt, I went to Services Services DNSMasq but I'm not really sure how to get it to work from there, or if it's even possible. I know I can redirect IP addresses, but I'm looking to redirect someone on my network from amazon.com to the special amazon affiliate code link. Hope that's clear. Thanks for any replies!

• Am I getting the right memory for my motherboard?

  Hi technophiles; I have a Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS motherboard. Also, the memory that came with my computer was two Transcend aXe RAM 1066MHZ 1GB modules. The thing is, I noticed that my motherboard has "DDR2 1200" written on it. This concerns me, have I bought slower memory than my computer is supposed to have ideally? Now, I'm not super concerned at a granular level about the best optimal RAM with the best CAS latency etc... but I do hope at least that I've got the right speed. Now, as far as I know, there is no such thing as ram at 1200MHZ? Am I right? You see, because I'm thinking of getting more RAM now, before I can't find the same type or speed any-more and just want to make sure it's the right thing. Furthermore, if the memory is slower than what I should be getting for my motherboard, what RAM should I be getting, and will that new RAM play nice with my old RAM? If I get new RAM at a different speed, would it be better / more beneficial performance-wise to omit the old RAM because of how the whole DUAL channel RAM thing works? • Bad Intel DQ965GF motherboard? Fails memtest, but memory is good.

  I've got a machine with a DQ965GF motherboard. Two days ago it started locking up hard. Ran memtest 3.3, 1.7, and TestMem 4. TestMem just freezes, memtest failed on moving 8 bit inversions. Letting memtest run eventually causes the system to restart. I pulled memory sticks one by one, and then replaced the memory with a couple of known good sticks. No luck. I switched power supplies, didn't help. Swapped video cards just to be safe. No help. When I start the machine I get a single beep before it POSTs. According to the manual, a single beep means: 1 beep - Refresh Error (with nothing on the screen and it is not a video problem) I'm assuming that the motherboard has failed since it's obviously not a RAM or power issue. Do you agree? NOTE: I also tried resetting BIOS defaults, and even flashed the BIOS to the latest version. I also ran the Mersenne Prime Test and the CPU seems to click along just fine. (Tried logging in to superuser with openid but it's not working for me today. Hope this gets through)

• why does my computer crash?

  Hi my computer keeps crashing and I don't know why. At first I thought because I had my cpu over clocked that it all of sudden was crashing. So I set my cpu back to regular speed. This did not help. I then thought it was because 2 sticks of my memory where from a computer that suffered from a power surge. However I just ran the windows memory diagnostic tool( extended) and after like 6 hours of testing my memory it found no errors. So now the only thing that is left is windows 7 64bit. I first over clocked my cpu for a couple months while running XP. Never had a problem. I installed the memory and windows 7 at the same time. But I not sure if it is my memory now since it passed the diagnostic tests. However I am not sure if it is windows 7 either has I installed it twice in the last year. I really don't want to go back to XP to find out if this is the case. • Undeliverable e-mail message from [email protected]

  I am responsible for IT for a small charity and we have a problem with a few individuals who e-mail us on our hosted e-mail addresses. The individual is on btconnect and our server is also on BT broadband and using MSExchange. I understand that the message from [email protected] are generated by Exchange but can't tell whether this is a problem with our server (seems unlikely as most people send and receive e-mails perfectly well) or with the sender's server. I have copied a sample test message below and would be very grateful if somebody can explain what is causing this problem. • Replacing quotes in a file

  I have a large number of large semicolon-separated data files. All string fields are surrounded by double quotes. In some of the files, there are extra quotes in the string fields, which messes up the subsequent importing of the data for analysis (I'm importing to Stata). This code allows me to see the problematic quotes using gnu-awk: echo '"This";"is";1;"line" of" data";""with";"extra quotes""' | awk 'BEGIN { FPAT = "([^;]+)|(\"[^\"]+\")"}; {for ( i=1 ; i<=NF ; i++ ) if ($i ~ /^"(.*".*)+"$/) {print NR, $i}}' 1 "line" of" data" 1 ""with" 1 "extra quotes"" but I do not know how to replace them. I was thinking of doing the replace manually, but it turns out that there are several hundred matches in some of the files. I know about awk's -sub-, -gsub-, and -match- functions, but I am not sure how to design a search and replace for this specific problem. In the example above, the respective fields should be "This", "is", 1, "line of data", "with", "extra quotes", that is: all semicolons are separators, and all quotes except for the outermost quotes should be removed. Should I may be use -sed-, or is -awk- the right tool? Hope you can help me out! Thanks, Matthijs
