  1. What is ASP.Net? It is a framework developed by Microsoft on which we can develop new generation web sites using web forms(aspx), MVC, HTML, Javascript, CSS etc. Its successor of Microsoft Active Server Pages(ASP). Currently there is ASP.NET 4.0, which is used to develop web sites. There are various page extensions provided by Microsoft that are being used for web site development. Eg: aspx, asmx, ascx, ashx, cs, vb, html, xml etc. 2. What’s the use of Response.Output.Write()? We can write formatted output  using Response.Output.Write(). 3. In which event of page cycle is the ViewState available?   After the Init() and before the Page_Load(). 4. What is the difference between Server.Transfer and Response.Redirect?   In Server.Transfer page processing transfers from one page to the other page without making a round-trip back to the client’s browser.  This provides a faster response with a little less overhead on the server.  The clients url history list or current url Server does not update in case of Server.Transfer. Response.Redirect is used to redirect the user’s browser to another page or site.  It performs trip back to the client where the client’s browser is redirected to the new page.  The user’s browser history list is updated to reflect the new address. 5. • ASP.NET MVC 3 Hosting :: How to Deploy Web Apps Using ASP.NET MVC 3, Razor and EF Code First - Part II

  In previous post, I have discussed on how to work with ASP.NET MVC 3 and EF Code First for developing web apps. In this post, I will demonstrate on working with domain entity with deep object graph, Service Layer and View Models and will also complete the rest of the demo application. In the previous post, we have done CRUD operations against Category entity and this post will be focus on Expense entity those have an association with Category entity. A single category contains a list of expense transactions and every expense transaction should have a Category. Controller classes should be lightweight and do not put much of business logic onto it. We can use the service layer as the business logic layer and can encapsulate the rules of the application. Our domain objects are mainly designed for the needs for domain model and it is representing the domain of our applications. On the other hand, View Model objects are designed for our needs for views. We have an Expense domain entity that has an association with Category. While we are creating a new Expense, we have to specify that in which Category belongs with the new Expense transaction. The user interface for Expense transaction will have form fields for representing the Expense entity and a CategoryId for representing the Category. It has properties for mapping values to Expense entity and a property Category for binding values to a drop-down for list values of Category. We need to create an instance of Expense for the persistence purpose. So we need to copy values from ExpenseViewModel object to Expense object. ASP.NET MVC futures assembly provides a static class ModelCopier that can use for copying values between Model objects. ModelCopier class has two static methods - CopyCollection and CopyModel.CopyCollection method will copy values between two collection objects and CopyModel will copy values between two model objects. We have used CopyModel method of ModelCopier class for copying values from expenseViewModel object to expense object. Finally we did a call to CreateExpense method of ExpenseService class for persisting new expense transaction. List Expense Transactions We want to list expense transactions based on a date range. The Ajax.BeginForm() method writes an opening <form> tag to the response. You can use this method in a using block. In that case, the method renders the closing </form> tag at the end of the using block and the form is submitted asynchronously by using JavaScript. The search functionality will call the Index Action method and this will return partial view ExpenseList for updating the search result. We want to update the response UI for the Ajax request onto divExpenseList element. So we have specified the UpdateTargetId as "divExpenseList" in the Ajax.BeginForm method. Add jQuery DatePicker Our search functionality is using a date range so we are providing two date pickers using jQuery datepicker. You can implement these approaches in your own way for building web apps using ASP.NET MVC 3. I will refactor this demo app on later time.

• why is LZMA SDK (7-zip) so slow

  I found 7-zip great and I will like to use it on .net applications. I have a 10MB file (a.001) and it takes: 2 seconds to encode. Now it will be nice if I could do the same thing on c#. I have downloaded http://www.7-zip.org/sdk.html LZMA SDK c# source code. I basically copied the CS directory into a console application in visual studio: Then I compiled and eveything compiled smoothly. So on the output directory I placed the file a.001 which is 10MB of size. Why is it 10 times slower than the actual program ? Also Even if I set to use only one thread: It still takes much less time (3 seconds vs 15): (Edit) Another Possibility Could it be because C# is slower than assembly or C ? I notice that the algorithm does a lot of heavy operations. For example compare these two blocks of code. • Snort's problems in generating alert from Darpa 1998 intrusion detection dataset.

  Hi. I’m working on DARPA 1998 intrusion detection dataset. When I run snort on this dataset (outside.tcpdump file), snort don’t generate complete list of alerts. It means snort start from last few hours of tcpdump file and generate alerts about this section of file and all of packets in first hours are ignored. Another problem in generatin alert is in time stamp of generated alerts. This means when I run snort on a specific day of dataset, snort insert incorrect time stamp for that alert. • Am I going about this the right way?

  Hey Guys, I'm starting a WPF project, and just finished the base of the UI, it seems very convoluted though, so I'm not sure if I've gone around laying it out in the right way. I don't want to get to start developing the back-end and realise that I've done the front wrong, and make life harder for myself. Coming from a background of <DIV's and CSS to style this is a lot different, and really want to get it right from the start. Essentially it's a one week calendar (7 days, Mon-Sunday, defaulting to the current week.) Which will eventually link up to a DB and if I have an appointment for something on this day it will show it in the relevant day. I've opted for a Grid rather than ListView because of the way it will work I will not be binding the results to a collection or anything along those lines. Rather I will be filling out a Combo box within the canvas for each day (yet to be placed in the code) for each event and on selection it will show me further details.   I have an aspx page(Default1.aspx),in which i have a static jquery tab and anchor tag upon clicking the anchor tag(Add Tab) I am adding new tab dynamically,which gets its contents loaded from another aspx page(Default2.aspx).This second page contains some text inside a tag,a textarea with 'tinymce' class which is placed inside a div with 'style="display:none" ' and this textarea gets displayed only upon clicking the edit button on that page. • Why isn't pyinstaller making me an .exe file?

  I am attempting to follow this guide to make a simple Hello World script into an .exe file. I have Windows Vista with an AMD 64-bit processor I have installed Python 2.6.5 (Windows AMD64 version) I have set the PATH (if that's the right word) so that the command line recognizes Python I have installed UPX (there only seems to be a 32-bit version for Windows) and pasted a copy of upx.exe into the Python26 folder as instructed. I have installed Pywin (Windows AMD 64 Python 2.6 version) I have run Pyinstaller's Configure.py. It gives some error messages but seems to complete.   Why doesn't following code work correctly in FireFox 3.6? I have tested in IE7, IE8, and Chrome with out any issues. Issue: The first block hover link (the table's 3rd row) doesn't apply the same style/effect as the following below it. Notes: I am trying to create my own table framework. This project is something I am doing to learn more about CSS. Before I started, I thought I knew a lot about CSS. However, to my surprise I was wrong. Who knew? Moving on... As side note, I do not want to take the time to support IE6. So, if you see a problem related IE6, please don't waste your time telling. One another side note, the following style script and HTML listed when this question is strip-down/bare-bone of the complete CSS/HTML. It should be enough to assist me. • Two-way databinding of a custom templated asp.net control

  I hate long code snippets and I'm sorry about this one, but it turns out that this asp.net stuff can't get much shorter and it's so specific that I haven't been able to generalize it without a full code listing. I just want simple two-way, declarative, edit-only databinding to a single instance of an object. Not a list of objects of a type with a bunch of NotImplementedExceptions for Add, Delete, and Select, but just a single view-state persisted object. This is certainly something that can be done but I've struggled with an implementation for years. This newest, closest implementation was inspired by this article from 4-Guys-From-Rolla. Unfortunately, after implementing, I'm getting the following error and I don't know what I'm missing: System.InvalidOperationException: Databinding methods such as Eval(), XPath(), and Bind() can only be used in the context of a databound control. If I don't use Bind(), and only use Eval() functionality, it works. In that way, the error is especially confusing. Update: Actually, using Eval() does NOT work, but using <%# Container.SampleString %> works. However, Eval("SampleString") gives the same error. That leads me back to this article I found earlier but had discarded. Now I believe it might be related, though I haven't cracked it yet ... • GDI+ crashes when loading PNG from IStream

  I wrote something to load PNG files from a custom C++ IStream via GDI+. It worked great until I ran it on Vista machines. Crashes every time. When compiled on VS 2008, I found that inserting code into the IStream::AddRef method, such as a cout, made the problem go away. When compiling with VS 2010, it still crashes regardless of that. I stripped the program down to its basics. I copied a FileStream straight from Microsoft's documentation. It can load PNGs when using Bitmap::FromFile. It can load JPEGs, GIFs, and BMPs via FromFile or FromStream.   Suppose I have created a wrapper class like the following: public class Foo : IFoo { private readonly IFoo innerFoo; public Foo(IFoo innerFoo) { this.innerFoo = innerFoo; } public int? Bar { get; set; } public int? Baz { get; set; } } The idea here is that the innerFoo might wrap data-access methods or something similarly expensive, and I only want its GetBar and GetBaz methods to be invoked once. So I want to create another wrapper around it, which will save the values obtained on the first run. It's simple enough to do this, of course: int IFoo.GetBar() { if ((Bar == null) && (innerFoo != null)) Bar = innerFoo.GetBar(); return Bar ?? 0; } int IFoo.GetBaz() { if ((Baz == null) && (innerFoo != null)) Baz = innerFoo.GetBaz(); return Baz ?? 0; } But it gets pretty repetitive if I'm doing this with 10 different properties and 30 different wrappers. So I figured, hey, let's make this generic: T LazyLoad<T>(ref T prop, Func<IFoo, T> loader) { if ((prop == null) && (innerFoo != null)) prop = loader(innerFoo); return prop; } Which almost gets me where I want, but not quite, because you can't ref an auto-property (or any property at all). In other words, I can't write this: int IFoo.GetBar() { return LazyLoad(ref Bar, f => f.GetBar()); // <--- Won't compile } Instead, I'd have to change Bar to have an explicit backing field and write explicit getters and setters. Which is fine, except for the fact that I end up writing even more redundant code than I was writing in the first place. Then I considered the possibility of using expression trees: T LazyLoad<T>(Expression<Func<T>> propExpr, Func<IFoo, T> loader) { var memberExpression = propExpr.Body as MemberExpression; if (memberExpression != null) { // Use Reflection to inspect/set the property } } This plays nice with refactoring - it'll work great if I do this: return LazyLoad(f => f.Bar, f => f.GetBar()); But it's not actually safe, because someone less clever (i.e. myself in 3 days from now when I inevitably forget how this is implemented internally) could decide to write this instead: return LazyLoad(f => 3, f => f.GetBar()); Which is either going to crash or result in unexpected/undefined behaviour, depending on how defensively I write the LazyLoad method. So I don't really like this approach either, because it leads to the possibility of runtime errors which would have been prevented in the first attempt. It also relies on Reflection, which feels a little dirty here, even though this code is admittedly not performance-sensitive. Now I could also decide to go all-out and use DynamicProxy to do method interception and not have to write any code, and in fact I already do this in some applications. But this code is residing in a core library which many other assemblies depend on, and it seems horribly wrong to be introducing this kind of complexity at such a low level. Separating the interceptor-based implementation from the IFoo interface by putting it into its own assembly doesn't really help; the fact is that this very class is still going to be used all over the place, must be used, so this isn't one of those problems that could be trivially solved with a little DI magic. The last option I've already thought of would be to have a method like: T LazyLoad<T>(Func<T> getter, Action<T> setter, Func<IFoo, T> loader) { ... } This option is very "meh" as well - it avoids Reflection but is still error-prone, and it doesn't really reduce the repetition that much. It's almost as bad as having to write explicit getters and setters for each property. Maybe I'm just being incredibly nit-picky, but this application is still in its early stages, and it's going to grow substantially over time, and I really want to keep the code squeaky-clean. Bottom line: I'm at an impasse, looking for other ideas. Question: Is there any way to clean up the lazy-loading code at the top, such that the implementation will: Guarantee compile-time safety, like the ref version; Actually reduce the amount of code repetition, like the Expression version; and Not take on any significant additional dependencies? In other words, is there a way to do this just using regular C# language features and possibly a few small helper classes? Or am I just going to have to accept that there's a trade-off here and strike one of the above requirements from the list?

• Printing an array in a method, from a different class?

  Hello All, I'm a fairly inexperienced programmer, and i'm currently working on a Console Application project. It's basically a little 'mathematics game'; the application generates two random numbers, that have either been added, subtracted, multiplied or divided against each other randomly. The answer is shown on screen and the user has to pick from the menu which is the right mathematical operator, once the correct answer is picked the application then displays on screen how long it took for the user in milliseconds to input the correct answer. Now I want to save the times of the players in an array that can be called up later with all the scores. I need to include a method in this programme and I figured a method to save the times into an array would be suitable. I seem to have stumbled across a little problem though. This is the only error I have at the moment, but I have a feeling soon as I resolve that error, another will come up. For now i'm just determined to get past this error: 'int' does not contain a definition for 'saveInArray' and no extension method 'saveInArray' accepting a first argument of type 'int' could be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?).
