• Join a single row in one table to n random rows in another

  Is it possible to make a join in SQL server that joins each row from table A to n random rows in another? For example, say I have a Customer table, a Product table and an Order table. I want to join each customer to 5 random products and insert these rows into the order table. (And each customer should be joined to 5 random rows of his own, I don't want all customers joining to the same 5 rows). Is this possible? I'm using SQL Server 2005 and it's fine if the solution is specific to that. This is a weird requirement but I'm basically making a small data generator to generate some random data.

  I started an app that was initially a testing platform--user management, and managers that can view their employees tests. Recently, functionality has been extended (not built yet) to allow users to complete a test in place of an employee--basically adding a record, but no user. I have three tables in use for this: users(contains user info for login/security), profiles (all personal info: address, height, etc.), and survey (contains survey answers for user). How do I extend my application to encompass this functionality with minimal change to the structure? I assume that the best way to do this would be to insert records to the tables profiles and survey, and have no username/password/email? There MUST be a user_id associated b/c the tables are linked through the user_ids...

  What is the best way to handle mysql database users connection in PHP? I have a web server running a PHP application on MySQL. I have created a database user for the application: dbuser1 with limited access - only for query, insert and update tables. No alter table. Now the question is, should i use the same dbuser1 widely in my scripts, so if there are 100 current people using my system and hence 100 scripts running parallel they all connect to the database with the same dbuser1? or should i create a few users and assign each script a different user or load-balance between the dbusers ?

• ArrayBlockingQueue - How to "interrupt" a thread that is wating on .take() method

  I use an ArrayBlockingQueue in my code. Clients will wait untill an element becomes available: myBlockingQueue.take(); How can I "shutdown" my service in case no elements are present in the queue and the take() ist wating indefenitely for an element to become available? This method throws an InterruptedException. My question is, how can I "evoke" an Interrupted Exception so that take() will quit? (I also tought about notify(), but it seems I doesnt help here..) I know I could insert an special "EOF/QUIT" marker Element but is this really the only solution? UPDATE (regarding the comment, that points to another question with two solutions: one mentioned above using a "Poisoning Pill Object" and the second one is Thread.interrupt(): The myBlockingQueue.take() is used NOT in a Thread (extending Thread) but rather implements Runnable. It seems a Runnable does not provide the .interrupt() method? How could I interrupt the Runnable? Million Thanks Bernhard

Now after populating DE with data, datetime remains the same though timezone information is added as below. • Workaround for Outlook 2007 for wrapping text around image with margin?

  As we all know, Outlook 2007 uses the Word 2007 rendering engine, causing endless grief when designing HTML email message. [Insert rant here] In particular, float, margin, and padding are - shall we say? - poorly supported. To simulate float so that text wraps around an image, apparently we can simply use: <img src="foo.png" align="right"> The issue is padding/margin. Without padding/margin, the wrapped text butts up against the image which looks goofy. One workaround is to edit the image and add transparent framing that simulates margin. Does anyone know any other workarounds?

I don't want to define a temp table with 250 columns! • Memory leak while using emoticons on CRichEditCtrl

  I'm developing a text editor class (for a chat application) based on CRichEditCtrl (MFC) with emoticon support. After i load the emoticon's bitmap, I use the function OleCreateStaticFromData to insert it into CRichEditCtrl. After that i just delete the bitmap object allocated by myself. I can verify (using a GDIView utility) that all resources i allocate have been properly released. This works perfectly: the bitmap (emoticon) is drawn on the CRichEditCtrl window and is handled just like a character. My problem is that I don't know how to deallocate the memory (internal) allocated by OleCreateStaticFromData to manage the bitmap (emoticon). The memory allocated for any emoticon used is never released, even if i delete the CRichEditCtrl object. I'd like to know how to fix that issue. Is that a MFC's issue or i'm doing something wrong ?   This is a follow up to my previous question. Consider that I write a function with the following prototype: int a_function(Foo val); Where foo is believed to be a type defined unsigned int. This is unfortunately not verifiable for lack of documentation. So, someone comes along and uses a_function, but calls it with an unsigned int as an argument. Here the story takes a turn. Foo turns out to actually be a class, which can take an unsigned int as a single argument of unsigned int in an explicit constructor. Is it a standard and reliable behavior for the compiler to render the function call by doing a type conversion on the argument. I.e. is the compiler supposed to recognize the mismatch and insert the constructor? Or should I get a compile time error reporting the type mismatch.

• SQL Server Query Editors - any that warn of number of rows to be changed?

  We're using SQL Server 2000 Query Analyser, and one issue we have is that very occasionally, when a user is updating our live database, they insert the incorrect/no(!) where clause. I know, not good, but it happens. Are there any editors that will warn of the number of rows that might be changed (if that is even possible) or even a way to configure an editor, if it is connected to a certain database, to prompt for confirmation before the query is run? We have a way to recover our data in the cases where we run an incorrect query, but it takes time, and I'm just seeing if there are any ways to catch the error, or at least give the user a second chance.   I want to insert tracking codes on all of the pages of a Magento site, and need to use a different syntax if the page is a CMS page, a category browsing page, or a product view page. I have a custom module set up with a block that inserts a generic tracking code on each page for now. From within the block, how can I distinguish between CMS pages, category pages, and product pages? I started with: Mage::app()->getRequest(); I can see that Mage::app()->getRequest()->getParam('id'); returns the product or category ID on product and category pages, but doesn't distinguish between those page types. Mage::app()->getRequest()->getRouteName(); return "cms" for CMS pages, but returns "catalog" for both category browsing and product view pages, so I can't use that to tell category and product pages apart. Is there some indicator in the request I can use safely? Or is there a better way to accomplish my goal of different tracking codes for different page types?

• Carrierwave upload to a tmp dir before saving to database

  I'm trying to build a visual editor where users can click an image they are presented with an image upload form once the upload is done I use ajax to return the image and insert it back into the page. But the above method inserts the image straight into the database but I want users to be able to visualize the image before the image is inserted into the database. So I was wondering if the image using carrierwave could be uploaded to a temp location, sent back to the user and then when the user saves the page the image is moved into the permanent location. Here's what I have so far. def edit_image @page = Page.find(1) @page.update_attributes(params[:page]) @page.save return :text => @page.file end But this is what I want to achieve def temp_image #uploads received image to a temp location #returns image to the user end And once the user clicks save def save #moves the file in the temp folder to the permanent location end Cheers
