  • Increase Linux screen resolution

    I'm running an install of CentOS 5.5 virtually and for some reason I only have 2 available screen resolutions - 800x600 and 640x480. Does anybody know how I can add some bigger resolutions? I've had a look in /etc/X11/xorg.conf and it is knows that the graphics card is virtual, but even listing the resolutions that I want fails. Here is the default screen section - Secton "Screen" Identifiew "Screen0" Device "Videocard0" DefaultDepth 24 SubSection "Display" Viewport 0 0 Depth 24 EndSubSection EndSection And here is what I tried adding to SubSection "Display" - Mode "1024x768" "1280x1024"

  • Increase in Available Memory expected by adding 1Gb RAM to a 3Gb Vista 32 bit system

    I understand the 32 bit Vista limit in addressing only 4Gb of memory space but I have a very specific question: I have 3Gb installed on a Vista 32 bit system with a 512Mb video card, MSI X-58 board, Intel i7, 920 CPU. System Information currently shows: Installed Memory: 3.00Gb Available Physical Memory: 1.73 Gb My understanding is that the 512Mb video card occupies memory addresses between 4.0Gb and 3.5Gb and so does not subtract from the 3.0Gb of physical memory (correct my understanding if wrong) My Question: If I install another 1Gb of RAM, will my Available Memory increase to 2.73Gb?     I'd like to use a programming model for custom graphics and precision placement, and an interactive visual mode for large scale layout and less precise placements. I've used tools (PostScript, various vector drawing programs) that do one of these modes well, but leave me pining for the other model. Which tools should I be investigating? I'm currently on OS X. Examples: Creating diagrams with precise spacing, sets of cards, either likely drawing from some sort of data.

    Windows server 2012 installed on a ISCI LUN. Problem noticed after first reboot. Windows boots only if setup DVD is present(i have to ignore "press any key to boot from DVD" prompt). to present the login Screen and everything looks great from here. But the server wont boot without the help of setup DVD. Can any one help me understand what would be the problem? Dell Workstation T3600 Intel Pro NIC (Capable of ISCI Boot and also enabled)

    I'm looking for a desktop board that supports either VT-D (Intel) or IOMMU (AMD) technology. This is the IO virtualization technology, not VT-x for CPU virtualization. I've found a list of chipsets that are purported to have this, but every board I look at, the vendor has decided to not support that feature. I would really prefer a desktop board over a server board for this. Does anyone have a specific model that is known to support this technology?

    I'd like to read small text file, located at: /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch without root permissions. It contains information about graphic cards (dedicated ATI Radeon and integrated Intel HD3000). I wrote a simple script displaying infomation I need, but it works only with root privileges. I already tried changing file & folder permissions, but when I restart my computer, the problem remains. Is it possible to permanently change that file permissions or owner?

    I'm looking for a good way to benchmark the performance of Ubuntu machines (preferably from the command line - only care about harddrive speed, memory, and cpu - not graphics). Are there any programs that could also be used on Mac or Windows so I could compare the results against an Apple or PC Desktop? Ultimately I'd like to use these benchmarks to compare different virtual machine configurations (speeds on different hosts and different hardware to get practical idea of the differences between different setups a rigs).     I've bought this laptop "Dell Vostro 3700", having inside an Intel integrated graphic card and an Nvidia GeForce GT330M. Depending on energy saving mode it switches between the two video cards. When I try to update the video driver (now version 189.99 on Windows 7 64-bit) with that found on Nvidia site an error message say that it cannot find compatible graphic hardware. Dell doesn't provide a newer driver version. Has anyone solved the same problem?

    :) I know I can base on tutorials that I can find on net, but there are confusing, and I know there are some of Postgres gurus here. My hardware: 2x Intel Xeon E5645 2,40 GHz / 32 GB of RAM / 2xSAS for pg_xlog (RAID1) + 3x2 SAS for rest (RAID10) + BBU and 512 MB of cache. It's gonna be used for one web project, with some big (relative term :P) tables (20mil+ of records). Server is dedicated to Posgtres service. I need help with configuring it - work_mem, effective_cache_size etc.

  • Cannot enable wireless Ubuntu 10.04

    I have recently installed Ubuntu 10.04, however I am having trouble getting wireless to work. Ubuntu says that wireless is disabled, and I am unable to enable it. I have tried Administration Hardware Drivers however the only drivers listed are Nivida graphics ones. I am unsure what to do as I do not think the process is the same as searching for drivers for a windows machine. Any advice appreciated.
