• Advanced example-driven C book with a lot of code.

  Hello, I am looking for a book on advanced C programming that: Teaches how to effectively express one's solution in C when one already knows the language in depth. Shows some common design idioms expressed in C, like encapsulation, modularity and that kind of thing. Is example-driven with a lot of good-quality code. I already know the language itself so books like otherwise wonderful "Expert C Programming" by Peter van der Linden is not really what i am looking for. What i need is a book on how to express my design in C, what are the common idioms, best practices, etc. I would also like to note that i am primarily interested in C, not C++, C#, Objective-C or any other languages inspired by C-like syntax. • Correct way to write /* and */

  Hi everyone. I'd like to know, please, the correct way to write the symbols that the C family of languages use to begin and end comments. Before you all respond "a slash followed by an asterisk", I mean what's the correct way to write them on paper. (IE, How many points should the asterisk have? What angle should the slash be? etc) Everything I need so I can sit down and draw correct comment start and end symbols. Please note, I'm looking for the correct standard way. If there is no industry standard, please respond with "there is no standard" and I will accept that answer.

Suppose there is a website that supports multiple languages: cn.mydomain.com or mydomain.com/cn or mydomain.cn en.mydomain.com or mydomain.com/en or mydomain.com fr.mydomain.com or mydomain.com/fr or mydomain.fr I want to write a GreaseMonkey script that has variables assigned different strings/values according to the address the user is loading the page from. How do you do that? Thanks EDIT: I realize I can just use JavaScript to get the address. Does GreaseMonkey itself support this kind of function?

• Remove year component from NSDateFormatter style

  I would like to present a date in the kCFDateFormatterFullStyle, but without the year. Is there any way to remove the year component from this style? My app requires localization so practically I cannot programmatically set the format string for all locales. I have come accross a solution which removes the "y" characters from the format string returned by the built in styles. Unfortunately, this is not acceptable as the year components are not represented by "y" in some other languages like Japanese. Any suggestions to get the kCFDateFormatterFullStyle without the year would be great! Thanks.

• Date in textboxes changing format

  I have an application (asp.net 3.5) that support 4 different languages. Along with other cultural changes, the date formats must match the current culture on out reporting pages. We set the date formats of each of the textboxes like: string date = DateTime.Today.ToString("d"); //returns the date portion only textbox1.Text = date; textbox2.Text = date; etc... When the user selects Spanish or British English the format should be dd/mm/yyyy. However, then I navigate to the page it displays in mm/dd/yyyy. After a postback it then displays dd/mm/yyyy. After another postback it switches to the mm/dd/yyyy format and on and on. I have debugged through this and I see that the culture is correct for the application and the date formats are returned to me correctly, yet when it displays, it displays incorrectly. Has anyone ever seen this or know what is happening?

  I'm not sure if 'architecture' is the correct term, but I've been looking for some articles online which talk about programming design and more about how best to use languages such as JavaScript in a code design sense rather than the actual syntax itself. I have found many websites but a lot seem to be very out dated, and I'm not sure what developments have taken place with JavaScript over the years so do not know how old is too old. If anybody could suggest some great websites, or maybe specific articles you think would be useful, that would be highly appreciated. I am a beginner programmer currently using JavaScript with XML and of course HTML & CSS, and I'm currently trying to get further into and learn more about web development.

• XCode 4.3 : XIB files and localisation

  I have a problem with XIB Files and localizations (Xcode 4.3, Mac Os X 10.7.4) My application supports french and english localizations. For my test, i decided to change the languages and regions from "french" to "english" in system preferences. When i launch my application, it displays always old XIB files (french) et not the XIB files "attached" to my new localization ! ** I followed all the recommendations which i was able to find : i cleared all caches, clean up the project, ... and so on ! The problem is always here and persists. Can be that XCode4 has the other files to delete somewhere else ? is it possible to use another means to test my new localization ? If you are a idea, ... • PHP - Frameworks, ORM, Encapsulation.

  Programming languages/environments aside, are there many developers who are using a framework in PHP, ORM and still abide by encapsulation for the DAL/BLL? I'm managing a team of a few developers and am finding that most of the frameworks require me to do daily code inspection because my developers are using the built in ORM. Right now, I've been using a tool to generate the classes and CRUD myself, with an area for them to write additional queries/functions. What's been happening though, is they are creating vulnerabilities by not doing proper checks on data permission, or allowing the key fields to be manipulated in the form. Any suggestions, other than get a new team and a new language (I've seen Python/Ruby frameworks have the same issues).

• Read binary data from a MDB-file running under LAMP

  I need to be able to connect to an MDB-file in a LAMP-environment (running on Linux) and ultimately insert converted data into a Mysql db. The data I need to access is stored as a BLOB (Long Binary Data according to Access) in the MDB file. I have not yet been able to actually have a look at the data but I have been told that the BLOB consists of byte strings. Something along the lines of: 0x1c 0x10 0x27 0x00 0x00 I need to parse the byte strings and convert these to a format that is human readable. I do have access to the documentation that explains the various byte strings. So this is really two questions: How do a get access to the MDB file via PHP* (running under LAMP) and read the BLOB (I do not have access to a Windows-platform)? What would be the best way to parse the binary data (in PHP*) once I am able to connect to the MDB-file? *Or are there other methods/languages that are more appropriate?

• Why use event listeners over function calls?

  I've been studying event listeners lately and I think I've finally gotten them down. Basically, they are functions that are called on another object's method. My question is, why create an event listener when calling the function will work just fine? Example, I want to call player.display_health(), and when this is fired, the method player.get_health() should be fired and stored so that display_health() has access to it. Why should I use an event listener over simply calling the function? Even if display_health() were in another object, this still doesn't appear to be a problem to me. If you have another example that fits the usage better, please let me know. Perhaps particular languages don't benefit from it as much? (Javascript, PHP, ASP?)

• View plain text files with different background colors in Mac OSX, for different programming languag

  Hi, I work with Mac OS X Leopard. I usually have 5 or 10 text files opened at the same time with different programming languages; one for a bash script, another for a python one, etc. When I use exposé all of them look the same, so it is difficult to select them. I wonder how could I work with just plain text files in OSX, so when they are opened in an editor the background color changes or some other thign, so when using exposé it is clear to me which window belongs to what language. I thought about inserting some kind of info to the last line of each document, and then creat some applescript that converts it to RTF or someother text document which includes color in bacjground, so then it is opened with textmate or someother app. Do you know a better approach for this? • Connecting to an RMI object without registry

  I think I need to connect to a remote RMI object without going through the registry, but I don't know how. My situation is this: I'm implementing a simple job distribution service which consists of one distributor and multiple workers. The distributor has a registered RMI object to which clients connect to send jobs, and workers connect to accept jobs. Unfortunately the distributor and worker hosts are behind a firewall. To get to the distributor host I am tunneling two ports (one for the registry, one for the distributor object) via SSH, so I can get to the registry and the distributor from outside the firewall. To make that work I have to set "-Djava.rmi.server.hostname=localhost" on the distributor JVM so that the clients connect to their local, tunneled port, instead of the port on the actual distributor host, which is blocked. This creates a problem for the workers, though, because they need to connect to the distributor directly, but because of the "localhost" redirection they behave like clients and try to connect to a port on their own host, which is not available, because I'm not tunneling on the workers (it is impractical). Now, if I could connect to a remote object directly by giving the hostname and port, I could do away both with the registry on the distributor and the "localhost" hack, and make the workers connect properly. How do I do that? Or is there a different solution to this problem?

• Is the F# language reference documentation available in an offline format (PDF, CHM)?

  I've found several posts on hubFS of people asking if there is, or will be, offline documentation for F#. These posts haven't been answered. So I want to give it a shot and ask the same question here on SO. Where I've looked for offline documentation so far: The April 2010 CTP release of Visual F# (version 2.0) is available for VS 2008, but it doesn't come without an offline help. There's a question on SO about offline documentation for various programming languages, but F# isn't mentioned there at the time of this writing. There is of course Microsoft's F# language reference documentation (available on MSDN), which could be downloaded for offline browsing using e.g. wget. Question: Does anyone know whether any "official" offline documentation is on the way, anytime soon? (And related to this, albeit this probably can't be answered objectively: Would it be reasonable to expect that F# likely won't undergo ECMA or ISO standardization, ie. there likely won't be a standards document describing the language?)

• What are the advantages of learning Go?

  What is so unique about Go? Over the 11 years of my career I've learnt Pascal, C, C++, COBOL and then Java. I always felt that going from C to C++ to Java was a incremental and value added progression. Now I see a proliferation of functional programming languages and I understand the benefit of learning few of them (like actors in scala etc). Now I was going through the Go programming language and was wondering why would I want to learn this? Is this going to simplify how I have been writing the code? What are its use cases? How can I make a case to promote it in my team? What is the next programming language that a Java team that builds business applications like us can benefit from? Appreciate your comments on this.

  I am a basic SVN user now trying to learn GIT for a new position. I am trying the usual reading docs and watching videos. However after doing all that I still feel that there is a lot that I do not know. I was wondering if there is a place like project Euler for programming languages, that provides a series of exercises that you can do just to increase your confidence and test your knowledge about a version control system. Something thats generic enough and gets you up to speed with how to do basic things. This could also serve as a comparison point of sorts between multiple VCSs, that would show what things are easy in which VCS. If there is nothing I was planning to document my journey in learning GIT and the create an exercise of this sort.

• How can I try a new language or framework without installing it?

  With so many languages and frameworks that exist, and with new ones appearing all the time, I don't have the time to download, install, and configure each one to evaluate it. In the past I've run across webapps that allow one to write or paste code into a window, and see the results in realtime in the browser, usually in a tutorial setting. What are your favorite sandbox sites for a given technology? Edit: @fretj provided the link to the excellent Google Code Playground (+1 upvote), but I thought that it was just for experimenting with Google's own apps (Search, Maps, Earth, Language, etc). But it turns out that it contains a few hidden gems: In addition to their apps, you can try out the many Javascript libraries that they host including jQuery, jQuery UI, MooTools, Dojo, and Prototype Scriptaculous. They're all hidden under the Libraries category in the "Pick an API" box. I overlooked the category because I thought it was for an app called Google Libraries. There's also a Javascript category for Javascript itself.

• Cross-platform SOA framework

  I'm looking for a good cross-platform SOA framework that preferably works with several programming languages like C++, Python, and C#. I recently learned about Thrift, but that doesn't seem to work with MSVC from the documentation I've read and requires the use of Cygwin or MinGW to even compile the Thrift compiler. Does Thrift work with MSVC and if not, are there any alternatives that would meet my needs? Such as being able to generate C# and Python bindings and work on Linux, Mac, and Windows. • Validating Internationalized URLs - Is this going to be a problem?

Does the validation change at all and will existing solutions break? Is regex still a good approach? If so, what would that regex look like? If not, what's a good strategy? So I've rewritten the code to do that (replacing factor-9 with recur being the only difference): (defn factor-9 ([] (let [digits (take 9 (iterate #(inc %) 1)) nums (map (fn [x] ,(Integer. (apply str x))) (permutations digits))] (some (fn [x] (and (factor-9 x) x)) nums))) ([n] (or (= 1 (count (str n))) (and (divisible-by-length n) (recur (quot n 10)))))) To my knowledge, TCO has a double benefit. The first one is that it does not use the stack as heavily as a non tail-recursive call and thus does not blow it on larger recursions. The second, I think is that consequently it's faster since it can be converted to a loop. Now, I've made a very rough benchmark and have not seen any difference between the two implementations although. Am I wrong in my second assumption or does this have something to do with running on the JVM (which does not have automatic TCO) and recur using a trick to achieve it? Thank you.

  Could someone please point me in the right direction. My project involves a database where users enter their address and other info from my website. This database is then referenced in my android application to show the locations of these addresses in my database. I have yet to start and just came up with this idea. My question is, what would be the best method to create a database easily modified through my website (mySQL, php, etc), and also easily referenced easily through Android and the Google Maps API? • Relvance of 'public' contructor in abstract class.

  Is there any relevance of a 'public' constructor in an abstract class? I can not think of any possible way to use it, in that case shouldn't it be treated as error by compiler (C#, not sure if other languages allow that). Sample Code: internal abstract class Vehicle { public Vehicle() { } } The C# compiler allows this code to compile, while there is no way i can call this contructor from the outside world. It can be called from derived classes only. So shouldn't it allow 'protected' and 'private' modifiers only. Please comment.

  I have worked using different languages like C++/Java and currently AS3. Most applications were computer vision, and small 2D computer games. Most companies that I have worked for, they use Singletons in a language like AS3, to retrieve elements or classes in an easy way. Their problem is basically they needs some variables or to call other functions from other classes. In a language like AS3, there is no private constructor, and they write a hacky code to prevent new instances. In Java and C++ I also faced the situation that I need to use other classe's members or to call their functions in different classes. The question is, is there a better or another design, to let other classes interact with each others without using singletons? I feel that composition is the answer, but I need more detailed solutions or design suggestions.
