• learning to type - tips for programmers?

  After hunting and pecking for about 35 years, I have decided to learn to type. I am learning QWERTY and have learned about 2/3 of the letters so far. While learning, I have noticed how asymmeterical the keyboard is, which really bothers me. (I will probably switch to a symmetrical keyboard eventually, but for now am trying to do everything as standard and "correct" as possible.) Although I am not there yet in my lessons, it seems that many of the keys I am going to use as a C# web developer are supposed to be typed by the pinky of my right hand. Are there any typing patterns you have developed that are more ergonomic (or faster) when typing large volumes of code rife with braces, colons, semi-colons and quotes? Or, should I just accept the fact that every other key is going to be hit with my right pinky? It is not that speed is such a huge concern, as much as that it seems so inefficient to rely on one finger so much... As an example, some of the conventions I use as a hunt and pecker, like typing open and close braces right away with my index and middle finger, and then hitting the left arrow key to fill in the inner content, don't seem to work as well with just a pinky. What are some typing patterns using a standard QWERTY keyboard that work really well for you as a programmer?

  Hi, I'm trying to load a WPF control in a C++/CLI application, using the HwndSource class. • If statement String trouble

Am I doing something wrong with strings?

• Debugging HTML & JavaScript with Firebug

  I made a JSONP widget. However, when one of the partner sites put it in their page, (1) it doesn't render at all in IE and (2) in other browsers (Firefox & Google Chrome), the HTML of the widget renders incorrectly: the <aside> closes prematurely, before the Financial Aid Glossary. It's something specific to that page because it works fine on this example college resource center page. To fix these two issues, I tried saving the page source to a local file and messing around with the local file and with Firebug, deleting DOM elements and stuff. I even tried fixing the errors that The W3C Markup Validation Service found. But, I still couldn't get it to render correctly. How should I tell them to change their page so that the widget renders correctly? Or, how should I update the widget script I wrote? • Timeline chart in Excel

  Hi, I'd like to see a timeline of events from a database in a "timeline chart", that should look like this: http://i46.tinypic.com/sw3dj5.png - I've made me a small c# program that paints this onto a Bitmap, but that isn't the way to go. I have input data that has 3 fields: StartX EndX Y 2596 15008 1 5438 6783 2 5450 5453 4 5456 5459 4 5462 5466 4 5470 5474 4 5477 5657 5 5662 5665 4 5668 5671 4 As the picture shows, for each line I'd like to have a line from StartX to EndX with a Y value of Y. Stacked bar chart almost solves my problem, but I don't want to have a new line on the chart for every row, I have thousands of rows and I'd like to have X axis as the time axis, and view which events (Y is the type of the event) happened simultaneously. The image ( http://i46.tinypic.com/sw3dj5.png) I've generated with a simple C# program shows that the event SYSTEM was active all the time, and the events TECH and BREAK were almost exclusive, but had some overlaps. • Can't connect to computer via SBS2011 RWA

  I've got an SBS 2011 Essentials server. Users a able to log on to Remote Web Access using their username and password. However, the trouble starts when a users attempts to log on remotely to his/her computer from the Remote Web Access website. When the user clicks on his/her computer (in the RWA website), the user is first presented with a window listing Publisher, Type, Remote Computer name and Gateway Server. Everything seems fine here, and the user clicks Connect. The user credentials are provided, and a connection is attempted. However, the logon attempt always fails with the message "The logon attempt failed". The logon attempt always generates three log events in the server log: EventId: 4672 - Special Logon EventId: 4624 - Logon EventId: 4634 - Logoff All events happens have the same timestamp. No events are logged on the client machine which the user attempts to log on to. Others have solved this by going to their IIS server and enable "Windows Authentication" for Rpc and RpcWithCert (in Default Web Site). However, this is in place on the server. I've also got RD CAPs and RD RAPs in place. As a side note; if i try to connect to any of the machines using the Remote Desktop Connection using the "Connect from anywhere" functionality - then things work flawlessly! In other words, the error only occurs when attempting to login to a computer via the Remote Web Access website. I've run out of ideas for how I can solve this (too many hours spent). Any ideas highly appreciated!

• WS2008 NTP - Using time.windows.com,0x9 - Time always skewed forwards

  I have a domain controller configured to use time.windows.com (with 0x09 flags set). I've noticed that frequently the systems' clock is fast - it varies from 10 minutes to even 45 minutes. I always have to keep resetting the system date/time back to what it should be. When I run "w32tm /query /source" it tells me it's using time.windows.com, and obviously I trust Microsoft not to serve incorrect times, but why is my server's clock fast? EDIT: There are a few Time-Service events in the System log: Event ID: 142 Message: The time service has stopped advertising as a time source because the local clock is not synchronized. Event ID: 139 Message: The time service has started advertising as a time source. These two messages appear in pairs every hour or so. Event 142 appears 14 to 16 minutes after 139 appears. Going back a few months, these events appear: Event ID: 35 Message: The time service is now synchronizing the system time with the time source time.windows.com,0x9 (ntp.m|0x9|0.0.0.0:123-65.55.21.21:123). Event ID: 37 Message: The time provider NtpClient is currently receiving valid time data from time.windows.com,0x9 (ntp.m|0x9|0.0.0.0:123-65.55.21.21:123). Event ID: 47 Message: Time Provider NtpClient: No valid response has been received from manually configured peer time.windows.com,0x9 after 8 attempts to contact it. This peer will be discarded as a time source and NtpClient will attempt to discover a new peer with this DNS name. The error was: The time sample was rejected because: The peer is not synchronized, or it has been too long since the peer's last synchronization. These three events only appear once in the log, back in October.

• Domain workstation acting up and I can't track it down.

If the machine is left on overnight (or any period of time longer than 5-6 hours) it takes 2-3 minutes to open any local drive and his network drives are no longer accessible. • Trouble with Remote Desktop pulling through printers. Drive Redirection works, and the ports created but not the printers

  I've run out of things to look into. All the support documents have been gone through and still provide no resolution. I've checked the service permissions, (sc sdshow spooler) they all match up with other systems and what is output on the support documents. I'm nearly positive that the issue can't be permissions anyway as the software requires all users to be an administrator, so all users are a local administrator. (I haven't looked into why yet but its on the list, I was just recently brought into this team and we've put procedures in place for quick recovery.) We've applied hot fixes relating to RDS and printing, though I'm not sure which ones they were. I've combed through group policy and no where is printer redirection disabled. It's setup with all default values regarding the use and redirection of printers and a quick install of W2k8 R2 shows that it works by default. This dev install was joined to the same domain, placed in the same OU, shows the same policies applied, etc, etc, etc, The server generates all the correct redirected ports but no printers are created. It will also redirect drives without issue, this would seem to rule out the usermode service that handles redirects being broken. No events are logged related to any of the events and there are no events from the TerminalServices-Printer source. There were local printers setup. I didn't think it would mattter but as I was running out of ideas I tried deleting them all with no change. The TS was configured for the software it will be running before we checked out the redirection of printers so the other team responsible to setting up new servers wants to find a fix instead of reloading a new server. I'm not sure where or what else to look for. Any ideas?

  How do I easily bring to the front of the screen the top windows of two different application in Mac OS X? I prefer to use the keyboard only. Example Scenario: Say there are 10 Firefox and 10 TextEdit windows open. Also, say that these windows are having various different sizes so that the windows of each application fully cover the desktop. Goal: I want to bring to the front of my screen the top window of Firefox along with the top window of TextEdit, so that I can visually compare some data. Restrictions: I cannot use expose (since having 20 windows on the screen already renders expose useless) And I do not want to use multiple desktop (too complex and time consuming) I prefer to use a keyboard shortcut. Unfortunately cmd+tab brings all windows of each application to the top, covering all windows of the other applications.

• Macbook Pro - Randomly sleeps and won't wake up

  All, I have a Macbook Pro 13" (mid 2009) that has had a long time issues which seems to be getting worse. Occasionally, I will go to wake the computer with the keyboard and can't wake it. The HDD spins up, the light on the front of the computer stops blinking, but as soon as it seems like the display should light up, the HDD stops and the light begins blinking again. More rarely, the computer will suddenly sleep while I am using it and then enters the same sleep loop. The only way to resume working on the computer is to wait. Doing a hard restart just puts it right back into the 'sleep loop.' • Bugs in Excel's ActiveX combo boxes?

  I have noticed that I get all sorts of annoying errors when: I have ActiveX comboboxes on a worksheet (not an excel form) The comboboxes have event code linked to them (eg, onchange events) I use their listfillrange or linkedcell properties (clearing these properties seems to alleviate a lot of problems) (Not sure if this is connected) but there is data validation on the targeted linkedcell. I program a fairly complex excel application that does a ton of event handling and uses a lot of controls. Over the months, I have been trying to deal with a variety of bugs dealing with those combo boxes. I can't recall all the details of each instance now, but these bugs tend to involve pointing the listfillrange and linkedcell properties at named ranges, and often have to do with the combo box events triggering at inappropriate times (such as when application.enableevents = false). These problems seemed to grow bigger in Excel 2007, so that I had to give up on these combo boxes entirely (I now use combo boxes contained in user forms, rather than directly on the sheets). Has anyone else seen similar problems? If so, was there a graceful solution? I have looked around with Google and so far haven't spotted anyone with similar issues. Some of the symptoms I end up seeing are: Excel crashing when I start up (involves combobox_onchange, listfillrange-named range on another different sheet, and workbook_open interactions). (note, I also had some data validation on the the linked cells in case a user edited them directly.) Excel rendering bugs (usually when the combo box changes, some cells from another sheet get randomly drawn over the top of the current sheet) Sometimes it involves the screen flashing entirely to another sheet for a moment. Excel losing its mind (or rather, the call stack) (related to the first bullet point). Sometimes when a function modifies a property of the comboboxes, the combobox onchange event fires, but it never returns control to the function that caused the change in the first place. The combobox_onchange events are triggered even when application.enableevents = false. Events firing when they shouldn't (I posted another question on stack overflow related to this). At this point, I am fairly convinced that ActiveX comboboxes are evil incarnate and not worth the trouble. I have switched to including these comboboxes inside a userform module instead. I would rather inconvenience users with popup forms than random visual artifacts and crashing (with data loss).

• Sending ctrl-backslash from Windows to Linux using Synergy

  I'm using Synergy+ to share the keyboard and mouse between a Windows and a Linux (Red Hat) PC. The Windows box is the server, Linux is the client, and both are running version 1.3.4. My Windows box is set up for English UK keyboard. In a Linux terminal window, Ctrl+\ (backslash) sends a quit signal to the currently running program - useful to kill a Python script that's run amok, for example. When I try to do this via synergy, Ctrl+- (minus) is sent instead. This has the undesired effect of resizing my terminal window :( Backslash on its own and Shift-backslash = pipe both work fine. Any ideas what's happening?

• Is there a good XP like windows explorer for windows Vista?

  I'm still refusing to go to Windows Vista and now Windows 7 mainly due to the windows explorer, I find it cumbersome and hard to use exclusively with a keyboard. I use XP file explorer in the most basic view, the address bar at the top and files always in list view underneath. The reason I do this is because I'm almost blind and do everything from the keyboard and don't touch the mouse whilst navigating through files, this is because I can type "L[ENTER]D[Enter]B[Enter]" and know that I'm in "c:\documents and settings\Brett Ryan", and I can hit [Tab] once to go to the address bar to type in a folder. Can anyone suggest a replacement for windows explorer that brings back this basic navigational behavior?

Unfortunately I haven't been able to find any information other that at the following link: http://www.liferay.com/web/raymond.auge/blog/-/blogs/portal-hook-plugins Does anyone know where I can find further documentation or how I would implement listening for user log in/log out events?
