• What are my options for Web 2.0 gallery software?

  Good day everyone! This is my first post on this site ^_^ My question is: What are my options if I need a Web 2.0 gallery software that work in a very similar manner to this removed web site. Essentially: users can create account, then create and manage their own galleries. And all other users and guests can see these galleries, add tags, comments, etc. Basically a community driven gallery web site. When it comes to "normal" cms I know a lot of good options, but I never worked with any gallery management software... If you can suggest me some good solutions (free) it would be great! Also: If you by any chance know what software is used at this removed website it would be even better, because this solution suits me the best and I would have used this engine, but I cant find any information on what this engine is and if it is even public, or privately developed thing. • What's the canonical process for backing up a website?

  This is going to sound terrible, but bear with me. I currently have a cron job that does a mysql dump, a git add all and commit, and a git push to bitbucket. I set this up almost a year ago, when I didn't know much about git, backups, and general web development and administration. I haven't had the time to fix this and do it properly, but the repo has now grown quite big from accumulating large temporary files from my forum, so now I have to do something and I want to do it properly this time around. What processes do semi-large websites and personal site admins use for backing up server content? Based on what I've learned since I set this up, what I'm currently think of doing is: Making changes on a development domain and committing the code frequently Archiving the entire site after a successful deployment from the development domain Having automatic daily database and user-content backups. I still like the idea of backing up sqldumps with git, though. I know git isn't a backup tool and that this is beyond its purpose, but the textual queries that are exported would be easily managed by git and would save a lot of space in archives.

• dedicated domain name VS just folders under a single domain?

  I run WordPress-Multisite for several sites. Each of these sites resolve under a single domain, e.g. example.com/foo/, example.com/bar/. I also have domain names for these e.g. foo.com, bar.com. which are currently redirects, so if a user hits foo.com, they are redirected (301) to example.com/foo/. My question is, should it be the other way around? should I use the dedicated domain names directly? What are the pros/cons of putting multiple sites under a single domain vs their own dedicated domains. I guess im asking with SEO and findability in mind.

  I am creating a 20-page site that will go on shared hosting. Each page will be about 20 KB (including HTML, CSS, and images common to all pages). To avoid manually adding navigation elements to each page, I am considering using a CMS. However, I am concerned that on a busy server, using a CMS would make the site load more slowly. In a shared hosting environment where PHP is run as a CGI binary, how much does a CMS (WordPress, Drupal, etc.) generally affect page load time, compared to both "plain HTML" static sites and those using PHP as merely a templating language?

• Why did my Google links disappear after a redesign?

  I recently did a complete redesign of my site. As soon as Google picked up the changes (I could tell because the excerpt in the search results was brought up to date), I noticed that my traffic slowed by about 30%. I started to investigate, ran a "link:" query on my site and saw only two links there. I know there are many more links to my site, mostly from reputable sources like magazines and large blogs. Why aren't these links showing up anymore? There's nothing even remotely spammy about my site, so I don't see why there would be weirdness going on.

I am interested in the costs and options available to take a single book and deliver it across multiple platforms and devices without signing up for a 3rd party service. i.e I would prefer to sign up directly with apple for iBook and Amazon for kindle than using a company that does both for me. Can anyone outline the basics?

• accessing files on a shared folder via IIS

  Im not sure if this suits stackexchange, serverfault or here... so i'll go with here for a start. I'm having issues setting up a network share to be accessed by IIS, all I need to do is read/write files on the Other server. We have 2 servers set up (Both 2008 R2 & IIS 7.5), one is the WEB server, which is externally accessible and NOT part of the domain. We also have an Intranet server which has no internet connectivity and is part of the domain. These 2 servers can talk to each other happily, I have the SQL server on the WEB server shared across to the intranet server so that the web content is editable from the intranet. I can share a folder on the web server (say, wwwroot/Images/) and connect to it from the intranet server, even have it as a mapped drive (but i know thats not going to work for IIS to access it), So there seems not to be a connectivity issue. I can also set up a Virtual folder in IIS on the Intranet server - this is where it gets annoying - I cant connect using pass-through authentication because there is no suitable user on the web server (which is not on the domain). If i set up a user on the web server, eg Intranet_USR, and give it appropriate rights to the folder, files and share, i can connect, but only view folder contents in IIS, not read, although that user has read privileges!! Any help much appreciated!

However,when I type in the local IP of my machine in the browser, it always shows site2. How can I change it to switch between site1 and site2 ? Is there a way that I can view both the sites form another machine (esp. mobile devices over wireless network) ?

  I am trying to remove the context name from the url of my server. Current URL - http://www.domainname.com/MyApp/ What I need to make is to make it avaialble at - www.domainname.com/ So it is only going to host one main app and that needs to be displayed when we open www.domainname.com/ on browser.   I did a small coding mistake and google indexed my site wrongly. this is correct form: https://www.foo.com/urunler/171/TENGA-CUP-DOUBLE-HOLE but google index my site like this : https://www.foo.com/urunler/171/cart.aspx first I fixed the problem and made a site map and only correct link in it. now I checked webmaster tools and I see this; Total indexed 513 Not selected 544 Blocked by robots 0 so I think this can be caused by double indexes and they looks not selected makes my data not selected. I want to know how to fix this "https://www.foo.com/urunler/171/cart.aspx" links. should I fix in code or should I connect to google to reindex my site. If I should redirect wrong/duplicate links to correct ones, what the way should be? thanks for your time in advance.

• Drupal 7: Documents as a node/block/field

  I'm working on my first Drupal site. I've progressed in learning the basics . I still have a lot to learn tho. Using FileViewer I can load a PDF saved in a field, for view content of various types. I haven't found something that does the same for Word Docs, Excel, PDF, etc. Does anyone know of something that works in Drupal 7 to load documents other than PDF like FileViewer does inside a browser? Or like Scribd does (Scribd is hosted. I am behind a firewall with limited access for users. So I don't want to use a Scribd like service.)

• Search engine bots accessing strange URLs

  We have ELMAH enabled on our site and get errors whenever a Page Not Found error is triggered on the website. We have recently redesigned a new website and so we understand that search engine robots might have previously indexed pages which they try to access and result in a Page Not Found errors. For this reason, we have set up permanent redirects for such previously indexed pages to the respective new pages. The website in mention is www.chambercollege.com and for example, a previously indexed URL was www.chambercollege.com/special-offers.aspx. This page is no longer accessible so we have created the necessary permanent redirect to redirect to the respective page on www.chambercollege.com/en/content/special-offers-161/. Now we are starting to receive Page Not Found errors of search engine bots (e.g. MSN bot) trying to access the URL www.chambercollege.com/special-offers.aspx/images/shadow_right.jpg/. Any idea how could a search engine make up that strange URL and whether you have any suggestions of what to do best?

  Site is a Joomla 2.5 site. I wanted to add a non www to www redirect to the htaccess file, did so, then the redirection went mad, reversed but still the site redirects. When i click view site in admin panel, i get linked to http://domain.comindex.php/ The website is http://www.domain.com Visiting the website URL works without www, but once you click on projects it acts mad too. • Is ignoring clients data during an automatic upgrading acceptable?

  I recently faced a deletion of my calendar and notes data inside a third party application ( Horde ) on my online space. When I told the web hosting provider they replied that they were doing an upgrade to system software (!!) and client third party applications are not within their reach or backup policy. They don't even have a backup of my data. Is this practice acceptable from a web hosting provider, even for an individual clients ? I know that backing up my data is my responsibility but I anticipated that backup copies done by the host would be available when needed.

We feel that our current interview process does not let us evaluate the candidate's thinking at a higher level (which is relevant for architect/senior level positions).   I'm studing a way to create my company domain based on it's name. Consider that my company's name is Another Store and I want to register a domain like anothersto.re - this is just an example. That domain is strictly chosen by marketing. What happens is that my company is stabilished in Brazil and our domain here is .br. The .re domain stands for an island near France so haves nothing to do with my country. If that domain is chosen what it can imply about SEO questions? Did it will have any influence on search engines results considering that they look over user's region? I've been searching online and in the Apache documentation for any mention of the equal-sign tilde operator, but I've found no mention of it. I know that some directives can take a tilde to use a regular expression, but I've never seen the m" ... " form used before. What exactly is that m" ... " for? Where else would you see this form?

• Why doesn't max-height hold in Mobile safari in landscape mode?

I have an image inside a container, and to allow for multiple screen sizes, I am setting all dimensions in % rather than pixels. in iphone portrait mode, everything is fine. • Is it really a security problem to have non secure assets on an ssl page?

  My understanding is that this is just an example of being overly cautious, but if my checkout form contains an unsecure asset on it, that doesn't endanger anybody's credit card numbers from being caught by a man-in-the-middle. I'm asking this because every once in while, maybe because of cached content or whatnot, somebody writes in saying that they are seeing this "error" (even though there are no unsecure assets on my page), but they want an explanation. So yes, I can tell all about encryption and certificates and trust and men-in-the-middle. But what do I tell them about this. How do I convince them that the site is 100% safe (and if it isn't let me know that I'm mistaken!)

• Google is re-indexing pages after redirecting URLs from HTTP to HTTPS incorrectly

  I upgraded my site so that all pages have gone from using HTTP to HTTPS. I didn't consider that Google treats HTTPS pages differently than HTTP. I recreated my sitemap to so that all links now reflect the new HTTPS URLs and let it be for a few days. (Whoops!) Google is now re-indexing all the HTTPS pages. I have about 19k pages on the site, and Google has already indexed about 8k of the new HTTPS pages. The problem is that Google sees all of these as brand new pages when many of them have a long HTTP history. Of course most of you will recognize the problem, I didn't set up a 301 from the old HTTP to the new HTTPS URLs. Is it too late to do this? Should I switch my sitemap back to HTTP URLs and then 301 redirect to the new HTTPS URls? Or should I leave the sitemap as is, and setup 301 redirects anyway... I'm not even sure if Google is trying to reach the HTTP site anymore. Currently the site is doing 303 redirects (from HTTP to HTTPS), although I haven't figured out why yet.
