• Quiz Master at Beyond Relational

  Last month a friend of mine invited me to join BeyondRelational.com and asked me to nominate myself as a .NET Quiz Master. In order to qualify I must submit an interesting question related to .NET and their .NET team will review the information and will select 31 quiz masters for the .NET quiz category. This seems insteresting to me so I go ahead and submit one entry. Luckily I was selected as one of the 31 Quiz Masters in the .NET category. • Poll on Entity Framework 4 &ndash; one year on

  12 months back (today is March 15th 2010) on the 16th of  March 2009 I created a poll on Entity Framework v1 – the marmite of ORMs? A quick poll…. Entity Framework v1 was getting a mixed reception at the time – I met developers who genuinely hated it and I met developers who were loving the productivity improvements they were seeing. There were definitely issues with v1, too many IMHO. Which is why the product team placed a huge effort on listening to the community to drive the feature set for v2 (which ultimately was named Entity Framework 4 as it ships with .NET 4). I think overall the team have done a great job. It isn’t perfect in .NET 4 (which is why the team are busy on post .NET 4 improvements) but I would happily use it and recommend it for a wide variety of projects – much wider than I would have with v1. I am speaking on EF 4 at www.devweek.com this Wednesday and I thought it would be fun to put a new version of the poll out and see how v4 is being received. Obviously the big difference is we have not yet shipped EF4 vs when I did the original poll on EF1. • Dealing with under performing co-worker

  I'm going to try to keep this topic as generic as I can so the question isn't closed as too specific or whatever. Anyway, let's get to it. I currently work on a somewhat small project with 15-20 developers. We recently hired a few new people because we had the hours and it synched up well with the schedule. It was refreshing to see hiring done this way and not just throwing hours & employees at a problem. Alas, I could argue the hiring process still isn't perfect but that's another story for another day. Anyway, one of these developers is really under performing. The developer is green and has a lot of bad habits. Comes in later than I do and leaving earlier than I am. This in and of itself isn't an issue, but the lack of quality work makes it become a bit frustrating. When giving out tasking the question is no longer, what can realistically be given but now becomes - How much of the work will we have to redo? So as the project goes on, I'm afraid this might cause issues with the schedule. The schedule could have been defined as a bit aggressive; however, given that this person is under performing it now in my mind goes from aggressive to potentially chaotic. Yes, one person shouldn't make or break a schedule and that in and of itself is an issue too but please let's ignore that for right now. What's the best way to deal with this? I'm not the boss, I'm not the project lead but I've been around for a while now and am not sure how to proceed. Complaining to management comes across as childish and doing nothing seems wrong. I'll ask the community for insight/advice/suggestions.

• No operating system found even when grub2 was reinstalled

  I know there have been many variations on this question and have certainly tried to do my research. I don't really know what I'm doing so I would rather not take risks. I am trying to dual boot xubuntu and windows 7. I started out with xubuntu and just installed windows. Of course, the mbr got overwritten and windows didn't seem to recognize linux. So I booted to the live cd and rewrote the mbr. And of course, now I get the error "No Operating System Found" on startup. I have been restarting a lot and sometimes the drive letters change and make my usb into sda.

• Grub menu not waiting despite of GRUB_TIMEOUT=10

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 installed along side of windows 7. The grub menu doesn't seem obey GRUB_TIMEOUT=10, I see the grub menu there for a split second and it immediately defaults to the first option. Grub menu worked fine when I first installed ubuntu. I am not able to pinpoint what exactly broke it(maybe some update?). I did resize my ubuntu partition using gparted but am not sure if that is what caused it. here are my settings from etc/default/grub GRUB_DEFAULT=0 #GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0 #GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true GRUB_TIMEOUT=10 GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian` GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="" How do I fix this?   Those of us that have been around Java/Java EE for a little while sometimes tend to forget that Java is still an ever expanding ecosystem with many newcomers. Fortunately, not everyone misses this perspective, including well-respected Java veteran Yakov Fain. Yakov recently started a free online video tutorial series focused on Java and Java EE for absolute beginners. The first few parts of the series focused on Java SE but now Yakov is beginning to cover the very basics of Java EE. • Making a Living Developing Games

  I'm in my last year of high school, and I've been looking at colleges. I'm taking a C++ class at a local community college and I don't feel that it's worth it. I could have learned everything in that class in a week. This had me thinking, would a CS degree even be worth it? How much can it teach me if I can learn everything on my own? Even if I do need to learn more advanced subjects, many colleges put their material online AND I can buy a book. Will companies hire me if I don't have a CS degree? If I have a portfolio will I stand a chance? What kind of things are needed in the portfolio? I want to live doing what I love - programming. So I will do it. I'm just not sure that a CS degree will do anything to me. In addition, if there is a benefit to getting a CS degree, what places are the best?

• Is there supposed to be a Windows Network folder in the file manager?

  I pulled my hard drive out of my computer and started with a bootable usb version of Ubuntu, which I am using that at this point. At first boot, I see that there is a Windows folder when browsing network. Since there is no operating system present, besides the usb that I boot from, should there be a Windows network folder? Original question First of all I just want to say, I wish I had tried Ubuntu a couple years ago when I first heard about it, but I was like a lot of the population and went with the "easy way" and stuck with Windows because I didn't want to take the time to learn something new. Well, about 3 months ago I realized someone had hacked into my computer, and then found they had hacked my facebook account so I decided I had better do a complete credit check. I found student loans (totalling about 30,000 so far) had recently showed up on my credit report. I think it's going to be a long, long road to recovery now but I'm hoping Ubuntu will be a start and definitely an eye opener. My relationship with Windows is over. I had 3 antivirus programs running, none were protecting me like I thought they were. Turned out a free program that I downloaded was the only one that could detect and clean the virus, but by then it was too late. • Documents stored on separate internal drive, Ubuntu doesn't notice on startup

  My machine has Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS running side-by-side on a single hard drive with GRUB bootloader, each with 500 GB storage. I keep my personal documents on a separate 1TB hard drive so they remain isolated from any changes I make to the OS drive, but when Ubuntu starts it does not seem to notice my documents drive. While I've installed and worked with Ubuntu 12.04 Server x32 before, using it as a desktop OS is new to me. I use my documents drive for all of my personal data, including wallpapers and music, so it is imperative that Ubuntu recognize it on startup. Concerning the two specific examples: Ubuntu loads with the default blue-colored desktop instead of my desired picture of the spectacular Carina galaxy. When I right-click the desktop and select "Change Desktop Background", it wakes up from its amnesia and loads the proper background. As for my music, Rhythmbox defaults to an empty library upon reboot, forcing me to reload the settings manually each time. This gets quite tedious because I certainly can't work to my full potential without my music. The second thing I would like to address is making Ubuntu point the documents directories in ~ to their appropriate counterparts on the 1TB documents drive. I realize that this question is not new, but when I create the symbolical links, they established themselves inside the directories and did not convert the directories themselves into symbolical links. I also prefer not to move the files themselves from their current location on the 1TB drive. I believe this would also help the Rhythmbox library problem as well considering it's a default directory for the music player. • Will all applications work fine on 64-bit Ubuntu?

  I used Ubuntu some time ago and now I want to switch on it again since community raised a lot and so did support for applications like Wine. I remember that when 64bit version just came out many applications didn't work as they did on 32bit version. Is it not better or still the same? Maybe they implemented something like WoW in Windows that simulates 32bit architecture and every possible app is working just fine. I am asking because I have lots of ram and I don't want to sit on 3GB when I have 8. Also, I am somewhat of a programmer, but that is not a problem because if I write PHP I use NetBeans on Windows anyway, and it works on Linux just as fine. But I also love to write C++/C# code. Is it well supported? I really like Visual Studio 2010, it is very slick and has good auto completion, debugging and so on... Is there any IDE on Ubuntu that is similar to Visual Studio in terms of auto-completion, code formatting, GUI designer, debugging? I really hope you will answer me these questions because I really like to "convert" myself to Ubuntu once and for all.

• Enable [command] key to register as something other than just [ctrl]?

  I'm running 10.04LTS inside VMWare Fusion on a Mac. The [command] key (aka [windows] on many keyboards) is almost always behaving as if it was [ctrl], even though I done anything explicit to request that behavior. In fact, in SystemPreferencesKeyboardLayoutsOptionsAlt/Win key behavior, 'default' is chosen (rather than the 'Control is mapped to Win keys' option). However, choosing other options there do not seem to change the handling of [command], at least not as tested in the SystemPreferenceKeyboard Shortcuts app. (No matter what I've tried, [command]-x is always detected as [Ctrl]-x in that app.) I've tried: various options under SystemPreferencesKeyboardLayoutsOptionsAlt/Win key behavior toggling the VMWare Fusion Preferences KKeyboard & Mouse Key Mappings setup which claims to map '[command]' to '[windows]', and restarting the VM in each position the xmodmap lines suggested at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MappingWindowsKey And yet, it's clear that all Ubuntu apps aren't merging [ctrl] and [command], because in 'Terminal', [shift]-[ctrl]-c will Copy, but [shift]-[command]-c will not. If the [command]/[windows] key was recognized as anything else ('Super', 'Meta', 'Hyper'? I don't care as long as it's not 'Control'), then I could achieve my real goal (which happens to be enabling CMD-based cut/copy/paste in PyCharm, while leaving CTRL-X/etc available for emacs-like bindings). I think any solution which manages to make [command]-x appear as something other than [ctrl]-x in PreferencesKeyboard Shortcuts will probably do the trick.

• Audio not working in 12.10

  I did a clean install of 12.10, when I open Sound Settings in gnome the only device in the list is "Dummy Output", and sound is not working. Sound worked fine out of the box in 12.04 I ran alsamixer, it says my card is "HDA Intel", and chip is "Realtek ALC880". The alsamixer playback output was set to mute at first, unmuting did not fix. I checked out the info at http://www.unixmen.com/2012003-howto-resolve-nosound-problem-on-ubuntu/ as suggested on a similar question, I've done everything there except installing the ubuntu audio dev team driver. Should I try install this? • Introducing RedPatch

  The Ksplice team is happy to announce the public availability of one of our git repositories, RedPatch. RedPatch contains the source for all of the changes Red Hat makes to their kernel, one commit per fix and we've published it on oss.oracle.com/git. With RedPatch, you can access the broken-out patches using git, browse them online via gitweb, and freely redistribute the source under the terms of the GPL. This is the same policy we provide for Oracle Linux and the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK). Users can freely access the source, view the commit logs and easily identify the changes that are relevant to their environments. To understand why we've created this project we'll need a little history. In early 2011, Red Hat changed how they released their kernel source, going from a tarball that had individual patch files to shipping the kernel source as one giant tarball with a single patch for all Red Hat-introduced changes. For most people who work in the kernel this is merely an inconvenience; driver developers and other out-of-kernel module developers can see the end result to make sure their module still performs as expected. For Ksplice, we build individual updates for each change and rely on source patches that are broken-out, not a giant tarball. Otherwise, we wouldn’t be able to take the right patches to create individual updates for each fix, and to skip over the noise — like a change that speeds up bootup — which is unnecessary for an already-running system. We’ve been taking the monolithic Red Hat patch tarball and breaking it into smaller commits internally ever since they introduced this change. At Oracle, we feel everyone in the Linux community can benefit from the work we already do to get our jobs done, so now we’re sharing these broken-out patches publicly. In addition to RedPatch, the complete source code for Oracle Linux and the Oracle Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK) is available from both ULN and our public yum server, including all security errata. • Partition tool with console UI (as in server installation)?

  Back in 2006, Ray (3DLover) posted the same question in: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=309680 but none of the answers were really useful. Now with a little help from AskUbuntu community, I would like to repeat his question again to see if this time it can be answered correctly. So this is the question (and what I wish too): I'm looking for a UI tool for managing partitions in a console. I have installed Ubuntu Server, so I don't have X Windows at all. fdisk and sfdisk are entirely command line. parted is slightly better, but it's not really a UI. cfdisk has somewhat of a UI, but it only works on one disk at a time, and there's no advanced options like configuring LVM or RAID. Just partitioning. I love the partition tool that is available during the OS install procedure. You can partition, configure RAID's and LMV sets. It can format the partitions with several different file systems, it can set labels, mount options and it can insert your volumes into your fstab. Is this tool available as a stand-alone program? I can't find it anywhere. I think it's called parted_server, but I can't find much information about where to get it. In the past, I have run the Ubuntu install procedure just to use the partition manager that comes with it. (canceling the install after making my partition edits) Anyone help me on this? • Is it too late to start your career as a programmer at the age of 30 ?

  Assuming one graduated college at 30 years old and has 5 years of experience (no real job experience, just contributing to open source and doing personal projects) with various tools and programming languages, how would he or she be looked upon by hiring managers ? Will it be harder to find a job considering that (I got this information looking at various websites, user profiles on SO and here, etc.) the average person gets hired in this field at around 20 years old. I know that it's never too late to do what you're passionate about and the like but sometimes it is too late to start a career. Is this the case? Managers are always looking for fresh people and I often read job descriptions specifically asking for young people. I don't need answers of encouragement, I know the community here is great and I wouldn't get offended by even the most cold answers. Please don't close this as being too localized, I'm not referring to any specific country or region, talk about the region you're in. I would also appreciate if you justified your answer.

• Best CMS for review-type sites

  Is there an ideal CMS for making a review site? By review site, I mean like a restaurant review site where you have each entry belonging to different major categories like Cuisine and City. Then users can browse and filter by each or by combination (Chinese Food in Los Angeles, with suggestions of other Chinese restaurants in LA, etc). Furthermore, I'd want it to support other fields like price, parking, kid-friendliness, etc. And to have users be able to filter by those criteria. I've been told that with a combination of custom taxonomies, plug-ins and many clever little queries, that Wordpress 3.x can handle this. But I'm having a heck of a time with it getting into the nitty gritty, and that's where I find the community support is lacking. The sort of stuff you'd think would work in WP, like making one parent category for Cuisine and one for City, don't really work once you get further in and start trying to pull it all together. Then you find these blog posts where people say, "This example shows that one could create a huge movie review site using custom taxonomies..." but when you go and try it you hit all sorts of challenges and oddities that point a big long finger at Wordpress being in fact a blogging platform. The best I came up with was one category for the cuisine and one tag for the city, then I created a couple of custom tag-like taxonomies for the other features. It's quite a mess to try to figure out how to assemble all of that into a natural, intuitive site. I expect a few versions down the road WP will be able to do these sorts of sites out of the box. So I thought I'd take a step back before I run back into the Wordpress fray and find out if maybe there is another platform better suited to this sort of relational content site. Directory scripts in some ways offer many of the features I'm looking for, but I need something more flexible and, hopefully, interactive (comments, reviews). I'm especially looking for feedback from people who've crafted sites like this. Thanks!

• How could there still not be a mysqldb module for Python 3? [closed]

  This SO question is now more than two years old. MySQL is an incredibly popular database engine, Python is an incredibly popular programming language, and Python 3 has been officially released two years ago, and was available even before that. What's more, the whole mysqldb module is just a layer translating Python's db-api to MySQL's API. It's not that big of a library. I must be missing something here. How come almost* nobody in the entire open source community has spent the (I'm guessing) two weeks it takes to port this lib? Is Python 3 that unpopular? Is the combination of python and mysql not as common as I assume? Or maybe it's just a lot harder to port mysqldb than I assume? Anyone know the inside story on this? * Now I see that this guy has done it, which takes some of the wind out of my question, but it still seems to little and too late to make sense. EDIT: OK, I'm aware that the stock answers for these kind of questions cover this one as well. Patches welcome, scratch your itch, we don't work for you and we don't have the time, etc. I actually took a shot at porting this about a year ago, but it was my first time doing anything with Python C extensions, and I failed. My point in writing this was not a plea for somebody to write it, but genuine curiosity: it seems that some much more complicated libraries have been ported to python 3 already, and in the poll for which libraries should be ported, mysqldb is not even nominated! That suggests that maybe (2) is the right answer. UPDATE: I found that there are several new libraries that provide mysql support under Python 3, I just wasn't googling hard enough. That explains everything.

Name Description Language/Technology Used WPF Alphabet WPF Alphabet is a application that I created to help my child learn the alphabet. It displays each letter and pronounces it using speech synthesis. It was developed using WPF and c# in about 3 hours (so its kinda rough). • Which metric/list should be used to evaluate whole software development team?

  Title might be seem vague, so let me tell you a little bit history what i am trying to clarify question. I have been hired as a consultant for a corporate's small developement divison ( The company also owns a couple of software dev. companies) My ex manager runs a BI team, with reportes, analyts and developers. He asked me to evaluate overall design, software developement process and code quality . Here what i found, Lots of copy/paste code everywhere ( no reuse ) Even though they have everything TFS, VS Ultimate etc, No Build process , No Cruise Control.net / team city... No unit tests Web Pages with 3700 lines of code, Lots of huge functions ( which can be divided into smaller one's ) No naming convention both db and c# code No 3r party or open source project No IoC No Seperation Of Concerns No Code Quality Check ( NDepend or FxCope or nothing ) No Code Review No Communication within the team They claim they wrote an application framework ( 6 months 3 persons), but I would hardly call a framework ( of course no unit test, there are some but all commented out). Framework contains 14 projects but there are some projects with 1 file 20 lines of code . Honestly, what people are doing fixing bug all thr day( which will provide more bugs eventually), they are kind of isolated from community, some team members even dont know github or stackoverflow they probably went there with google but they dont know about it. So here is question, Is This list ok ? Or am i being picky? Since I dont have any grudge against them, I just want to be fair, honest and I would like to hear you suggestions, before I would submit this list. • Expected time for lazy evaluation with nested functions?

  A colleague and I are doing a free R course, although I believe this is a more general lazy evaluation issue, and have found a scenario that we have discussed briefly and I'd like to find out the answer from a wider community. The scenario is as follows (pseudo code): wrapper => function(thing) { print => function() { write(thing) } } v = createThing(1, 2, 3) w = wrapper(v) v = createThing(4, 5, 6) w.print() // Will print 4, 5, 6 thing. v = create(7, 8, 9) w.print() // Will print 4, 5, 6 because "thing" has now been evaluated. Another similar situation is as follows: // Using the same function as above v = createThing(1, 2, 3) v = wrapper(v) w.print() // The wrapper function incestuously includes itself. Now I understand why this happens but where my colleague and I differ is on what should happen. My colleague's view is that this is a bug and the evaluation of the passed in argument should be forced at the point it is passed in so that the returned "w" function is fixed. My view is that I would prefer his option myself, but that I realise that the situation we are encountering is down to lazy evaluation and this is just how it works and is more a quirk than a bug. I am not actually sure of what would be expected, hence the reason I am asking this question. I think that function comments could express what will happen, or leave it to be very lazy, and if the coder using the function wants the argument evaluated then they can force it before passing it in. So, when working with lazy evaulation, what is the practice for the time to evaluate an argument passed, and stored, inside a function?

• Will buy simple Cocos2D bubbles iPad game for private use (source)

  Hi, First of all, sorry if this is the wrong place for posting this kind of request. IDK if is there already a marketplace on the stack community. I'm a fairly experienced iPhone/iPad developer with several Apps already published. I have a deep understanding of Objective-C and the Cocoa framework, as well as with the iPhone development tools. However, I have never used Cocos2d (or any other gaming engine for that matter) as I've mostly specialized in utilities/productivity Apps. I am in the urgent need of developing a really simple iPad game (for which I will provide all of the media assets - graphics and sounds) that needs to be deployed in about a week from now. Basically the game should allow the user to pop bubbles of different size and speed as they move from the bottom to the top of the screen. While I could take the time to read the documentation and start working on this game myself, I'm currently with a couple of other projects that I need to finish soon, so I would like to ask for the help of some other more experienced Cocos2D developer which could develop this game on its basic form for me. If you think you can help, please send me your quote, timing and, if possible, samples of previous work done with Cocos2D that would be similar to what I need. I can provide more detail upon request. • What do you feel are characteristics of a mature programmer?

  Hey all. As part of ongoing research that I am conducting, I would like to ask a crowd, that I feel is the most qualified, to answer a question. What does the community feel are characteristics of a mature programmer? I'm not asking the question because I'm looking to hire or anything of that nature. A colleague and I repeatedly hear a trend throughout universities and specifically computer science departments. The students generally ask questions of the form: How can I become a mature programmer? How can I become a world class programmer? What steps should a new programmer take to become more skilled? So, with that, we are conducting research to attempt to identify an optimized path that would allow an introductory programmer to advance to that of a skilled/mature programmer. Now, I understand that there are many "it depends" out there depending on what vertical industry one works in, but I feel we can determine many common characteristics irrespective of the industry. Any thing you can offer is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

• VMware Player 5.0 or VMware Workstation 9.0 after upgrade to Ubuntu 12.10

  The upgrade process Upgrading Ubuntu 12.04 to latest version 12.10 - aka Quantal Quetzal - is straight forward and you only need to follow the offical upgrade instructions. Short version on the console looks like this: sudo do-release-upgrade This will update the repository entries, and start the upgrade process. After some minutes or hours of download and installation, you have to reboot your system once to get the new kernel loaded. As time of writing, I'm on '3.5.0-17-generic'. And as with any modification of the kernel version, you have to compile the necessary kernel modules to get VMware Player or Workstation up and running. Usually, this happens the first time you try start your VMware software and that's it. Well, again not so this time. Getting the kernel patch Luckily, the community over VMware is very active and you can get a new kernel patch in the online forums here. Get the download and put in a folder have write permissions. Then you extract the archive on the console like so: tar -xjvf vmware9_kernel35_patch.tar.bz2 Then you change into the newly created folder: cd vmware9_kernel3.5_patch/ And you execute the available shell script as root (superuser) like so: sudo ./patch-modules_3.5.0.sh This will stop any running instances of VMware software, patches the source files and runs the compile process for your active environment. This might take some time depending on your machine, and once completed you can start VMware Player or Workstation as previously. In case that you are going to apply the patch again, the script will simply quit with the following output: /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source/.patched found. You have already patched your sources. Exiting You might remove the .patched file in case that you upgraded/changed your kernel and you need to apply the patch again. Disclaimer: The patch is "as-is" and the patcher is originally created by Artem S. Tashkinov, and later modified by An_tony. Please refer to the VMware forum in case of questions or problems. There are also patches available for older versions of VMware Player or Workstation.
